Obituary Preview: Clarence Spears Sr, age 70, of Redby, MN, traveled to the Spirit World on Sunday, May 12, 2024 due to health. Clarence was born on October 16, 1953 to Albert Spears Sr and Eunice (Alice) Spears.
He grew up in Red Lake. Clarence was a loving father to all his sons and daughters. He loved traveling and visiting his friends and relatives. He was very protective over his two (2) granddaughters, Brielle and Lei’Emery, whom he was raising. He married Gloria Whitefeather Spears in Las Vegas on March 26, 1996. He worked at Red Lake Fisheries from 1990 to 1992, as a Fish and Wildlife Technician from 1994 to 1998, doing night security for DNR from 2003 to 2008 when he resigned due to health.
Clarence is survived by his sons Jeremy Archambault and Clarence Spears Jr; daughters Yvonne Spears, Cheyenne Martin Spears, Lisa Spears, Shiela Spears and Holly Sayers; sisters Mary “Jane” Bedeau Fayant, Kathy Spears Dudley and Donna Spears Jourdain; and special granddaughters Brielle Isham and Lei’Emery Barrett.
Those greeting him in the Spirit World are parents Albert Spears and Alice Spears; wife Gloria Whitefeather Spears; brothers John, Frank, Alberta Jr, Brian and Patrick; sisters Gloria Spears and Patsy Thompson; and aunts Mary RedEagle, Anna Spears and Loretta Berg.

Obituary Preview: George H. Olson, age 89, of Mahtowa entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 in Duluth, MN. He was born on August 30, 1934 to Herbert and Jennie (Lahti) Olson in Mahtowa, MN.
George served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959. He was united in marriage to Sarah Hopp on January 31, 1958. He retired from Potlatch in 1996 after 36 years of service. He enjoyed his family and friends, his hobby farm, gardening and fish frys.
George is survived by his children Susan (Ron) Bumann, Jeffrey Olson, Sally (Brad) Wilson, Mary (Mike) DiMartino and Greg (Nona) Olson; grandchildren Andrew Bumann, Jason Alexander (Amy), Anna DiMartino, Sarah Wilson, Jarid (Ashley) Nacey and family, and Brian (Savannah) Ronding; great grandchildren Gavin, Lauren and Bennett Alexander; sister Evelyn Newman; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Sarah; grandchildren Amy (Bumann) Alexander and Evan Olson; brother Gunnard (Netta) Olson; sister Irene (Don) Peterson; and brother-in-law James Newman.
A Time of Remembrance will be held on Friday, May 24, 2024 from 2-4 PM at Mahtowa Salem Hall, 2702 1st Street, Mahtowa, MN 55707.

Obituary Preview: Francis Cedric Littlewolf (December 17, 1947-May 3, 2024) Ogimaa Maheengans/Akiwenzii, of the Ma'iingan Doodem, hereditary Chief, started his journey on to the spirit world. Cedric was born in Cass Lake, Minnesota. His family moved to the Iron Range and he grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota, later living in many different communities across Northern Minnesota.
Cedric will rejoin his father Steven and mother Frances, brothers Steven, Richard, Ken, sisters Carol, Janice, Joyce, Brenda, son Steve, grandson Darrian, partner Annette Vaughn, and many other beloved relatives who are awaiting him in the spirit world.
Cedric is celebrated in life by sisters Donna, Cheryl, Verna, Della, brothers Ron, Tim, and Brian, his children Francis (Carolyn), Donovan (Lori), Mark (Merrilee), LeAnn (Vinson), Nevada (Rick), Wolfgang (Rebekah), Cedric (Seanna), and Kallie, his grandchildren Francis III, Barbara, Kyle, Alyssa, Josh, Austin, Henry, Preston, Isaiah, Brandon, Teague, Khayman, Rodney, Mika, Kira, Elijah, Aeron, Cedric Jr., Legend, Owen, and Shaylee, great grandchildren Poemaut, Arabella, Ezra, Lincoln, many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. Cedric always took time to visit with others and had a beloved community everywhere he traveled.
Cedric was a warrior and believed in protecting our people and our cultural practices. As an iconic boxing legend, Cedric won five state championships and represented in six national finals for Golden Gloves Boxing. He formed strong bonds with his Coach Bill Grillo and other fighters. He was always proud to show what an Ojibwe warrior can do. Cedric was a champion fighter and it was more than boxing for him. He was a fighter for our people and it was his highest honor to fight for the Anishinaabeg, the people.
Cedric loved children and he would do anything for our future generations. He always made time to visit classrooms with Ojibwe traditional teachings. He was a lifelong storyteller and passed many teachings on through his stories. He loved creating beadwork, leatherwork, and master crafting spirit staffs, war clubs, and other Ojibwe traditional and spiritual items. Cedric was an artist with a keen eye for details and beauty.
He was a kind and generous Dad and a strong brother, son, and grandson. He is greatly loved by many and he helped many people in his life. He had great patience and a great heart. Many learned about the true meaning of love from his example and teachings.
A traditional wake will begin at Noon on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at Mission Community Center and continue until the service at 8AM on Monday, May 6, 2024. Marilyn was born on May 18, 1960, to Winifred and Oscar Westbrook in Minneapolis, MN.  She attended school in Minneapolis, MN and also studied at Leech Lake Tribal College. She was a longtime member of MIWSAC, as well as a Circle Keeper for the organization. She moved on to facilitating a breakout session at least year’s conference and from that was asked to speak at the Bemidji MMIW event. She was always on the road traveling and loved visiting friends and relatives while attending pow-wows, listening to the drums, watching the dancers and playing keno.
She will be lovingly remembered by her children Desiree Ramos and Kenneth Rogers and grandchildren; brothers John Joe Stately, Thomas “Jambi” Westbrook and Stephen Ortley; adoptive sisters Armella Neadeau, Marsha Neadeau and Valerie Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Thelma Jeanette (Lambert) Grimley, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at May Creek in Walker, Minnesota. She was born on October 14, 1935 to Einar and Almena (Olsen) Lambert in Bemidji, Minnesota.
Thelma grew up on a small farm in Frohn Township (between Bemidji and Cass Lake). She graduated from Bemidji High School in 1954 and married her husband, John Grimley, in 1957. Thelma was a realtor and owned her own agency, Leech Lake Realty. She enjoyed painting, needlepoint and had a life-long love of horses. Thelma and John were both involved in the Walker Rotary Club and the Sons of Norway for many years. She has been lovingly cared for at May Creek in Walker for the last three years. The family sincerely appreciates all the staff at May Creek and thanks them for taking such good care of their Mom.
Thelma is survived by her sons John (Jean) Grimley, Curt (Mary) Grimley and Jeff (Lee Ann) Grimley; and many grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband John.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker, Minnesota with Pastor Dave Smith officiating. A private interment will follow at Frohn Cemetery in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Mary was born on August 29, 1987, in Minneapolis, MN, to Kevin and Elaine (Dow) Heinonen. She made her home in Ponemah. Mary was an animal lover and had just brought home her new addition to the family, a puppy she named Marvin. She loved nothing more than to cuddle up on the couch with her pets and her family to watch a movie.  Mary was a kind giving woman who was always willing to offer a helping hand to family and neighbors. Above all, Mary loved being a mom, and her three children were her pride and joy in life.

He was protective of those he loved and looked forward to spending time with his children, grandchildren and family.

James Dean Miller - June 10, 1930 - April 24, 2024

Obituary Preview: James Dean Miller, age 93, passed away at the hospital on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 in Monticello, Minnesota. James was born on June 10, 1930 in Monticello, Minnesota to John and Blanche (Garvey) Miller.
James grew up in Monticello and graduated from Monticello High School in 1948. He then entered the Army that same year. After he was discharged from the Army, he worked in Alaska and was later recalled to the Army for the Korean War. James moved to California in 1956 and became a California Highway Patrol Officer in 1957 until his retirement in 1985. In 1980, James married Lois Schoepf in Monticello, Minnesota. They moved back to Monticello after his retirement, during which they spent time traveling and motorcycle riding. He was active in the American Legion and loved spending his winters in Texas.
James is survived by his brothers Jay Miller of Phoenix, AZ; sisters Phyllis Johnson of Monticello, MN and Carol (Doug) Pitt of Walker, MN; 12 nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Blanche; spouse Lois; sister Marvel Trunnell; and brother Wally Miller.
A service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at American Legion Post 260 at 304 Elm St in Monticello, Minnesota.

Obituary Preview: Clyde Edward Oliver, age 71, passed away on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 in Becker, Minnesota. He was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 26, 1952 to Rollen and Beatrice (Countryman) Oliver.
Clyde was one of 4 children born to Rollen and Bea Oliver. He spent 4 years in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from high school in 1970. After his time in the Air Force, Clyde graduated from Bemidji State University in 1978 with a degree in Accounting. He then worked for the college in Brainerd for 31 years and spent 25 years as a Scout Leader for Pine River Backus Troop 73. The most important thing in Clyde’s life was his family. He loved seeing his nieces and nephews, and his great nieces and nephews.
Clyde is survived by his siblings:  Rollen J. Oliver (Audrey), Nan Chesla (Dan), Nancy Runquist; and nieces and nephews:  Chandra Holt, Chris Chesla, Andy Chesla (Danielle), Chalisa Litecky (Mike), Nathan Oliver (Kendra), Rachel Schlict (Mark); and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rollen and Beatrice Oliver.

Obituary Preview: John G. Weins, of Mesa, AZ and formerly of Longville, MN passed away on April 3, 2024. John was 86 years old and died peacefully at his home in Mesa, AZ. John was born in So. St. Paul, MN to Galen & Ione Nelson Weins. A graduate of So. St. Paul High School, he continued his education at Northwestern College in Minneapolis, MN and Macalester College in St. Paul, MN graduating with an education degree. His first teaching jobs were at Hinckley, MN and Coon Rapids, MN. He then moved into the position of Communication/Public Relations Coordinator at Anoka-Hennepin School District. He retired in 1994 and moved to his home in Longville, MN.
In 1995 he married Sandy Grewe at the Longville Community Church. He shared 29 years of love and companionship with Sandy. They started spending their winters in Arizona in 1996. Together they built a life with adventure, laughter and unwavering support for one another. John was a devoted father to his daughter, Dawn Olson, and her family.
Throughout John’s life, he pursued many endeavors, such as working in education and communication/public relations, working as Activity Director for the Longville Chamber of Commerce, directing the Sunland Village Foundation in Mesa, AZ and running and loving the smallest resort in Minnesota on Heffron Lake. John was a man of deep faith. His devotion to his beliefs was evident in his life from his relationships to his work. He was dedicated to serving the community, especially during his years in the Longville area.
John had a passion for writing, singing, tennis, biking, hunting, hiking and was a supporter of the MN Vikings and all Minnesota sports teams. He had an overwhelming love for Tall Pine Lodge and property on Heffron Lake.
John is survived by his wife, Sandy, daughter Dawn Olson, son-in-law Scott Olson, sister-in-law Claudia Weins, and grandsons Reid and Jack. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James.

She worked as a ballots keeper and in AmeriCorps.  She liked going to the casino, traveling with her pastor and cooking (especially banana bread, fry bread and chicken dumpling soup). She loved card games, including Uno and Skip-Bo, and attending community events. She loved spending time with family and friends and loved her cats, Robert and Sylvia, Jacob’s dog, Fat Girl, and her finches!
Libby is survived by her sons Joshua and Jeremiah Hunter; 2 granddaughters and 1 grandson; brothers Louis, Rapheal and Anthony Gurneau; and sisters Ruby, Luann, Lynda, Lorene and Caroline Bassett.

Obituary Preview: It is with sad tidings we report James Robert Morgan passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 11, 2024.
He was born on September 26th, 1949, to Robert Morgan and Mary (James) Morgan in Minneapolis, MN.  He enlisted and served proudly in the Army from 1968 to 1976.  Jim completed basic training in Fort Benning, GA then AIT Pershing Missile School in Redstone Arsenal.  On completion of training, he received orders to Germany for a three year tour.   He returned to Redstone Arsenal located in Huntsville, AL.  As in everything in life he excelled in the Pershing Missile program and finished his career as an instructor in the Pershing Missile MOS. Jim has had a successful career in several fields.  He moved to Wisconsin upon completion of his Army Career to work for Beaver of Wisconsin in Stevens Point.   Ultimately, he relocated back to Minneapolis, MN to work for FMC involving instrumentation and industrial controls.  Once completing that job, he transferred to J & W Instruments.  In 1993 Jim and Marie purchased the Wharf in Walker MN which they owned for 16 years.  Jim was famous for his Giant Heated Tacos, Buffalo wings and Chicken Chow Mein.  After He and Marie sold the Wharf, Jim began employment for Covanta Energy where he worked in the Minneapolis plant.  He was promoted to Eastern Regional Manager and had the privilege of managing a wide array of facilities in many cities throughout the region until his retirement from Covanta in 2018.  Jim’s dedication and work ethic prompted him to work further and so he began test driving cars for PDW out of Detroit until January 2024.
Jim was a special individual and was very devoted to his loved ones.  He enjoyed people and socializing with everyone from all walks of life.  He had a special gift that enabled him to connect with anyone.  Jim was well loved everywhere he went.  He never forgot a face and people always loved and remembered him in all of the places he worked and traveled including his beloved yearly trip to New Orleans.  Family was most important to him and he would give the shirt from his back to help all in need.   He was a member of the Laporte American Legion and a life time member of the VFW.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Marie; Children, Tim (Amy) Morgan, Christina (Carl) Day, Stephanie Morgan,  Kimberly Morgan, Stepson Trevor (Stacie) Lindahl,  Sister; Theresa (Jim) Cuesta, Step Mother; Geri Hetterick; Half Sister;  Kathy Hetterick,  Eileen Woodall,  Half Brother;  John Hetterick, Brian (Mai) Hetterick,   Mike (Kathy) Hetterick,  Mike (Gina) Van Berkom, Stepbrother Steve (Debbie) Van Berkom;  Grand Children; Amanda Schlundt, Morgan Day, Larry and John Morgan, Noah McMillan, Brandon Dodge, Noah and Logan Lindahl and Great Grandson; Jayden Pigeon.

Logan was born on June 4, 1996, in Bemidji, MN, oldest of identical twins, to Shannon (Lasley) and Clayton Rudolph, Sr.  Logan attended school in Red Lake. At age 7, he represented Red Lake Elementary as the Brave Grass dancer from 2003 to 2004, and looked forward to dancing at pow wows.  He was also involved in martial arts, attending Brandts Tae Kwon Do, and received his black belt at the age of 14, winning several medals and trophies in competitions. Logan received his GED from Red Lake High School in 2017. He worked as a lifeguard, as a slot technician at the Thief River Falls Casino, ands most recently as a mechanic at Tires Plus. He loved music and enjoyed going to concerts and music festivals. He collected beaded medallions.  Family was everything to him, and was inseparable with his twin brother, Lukas. He was always willing to stand up for his family and friends and always quick with timing when his homies and brothers needed back up.

He taught himself how to play guitar and liked to listen to a wide variety of music and it showed he had 1ooo’s of songs on his IPOD. He loved attending concerts with his family.  He liked to ride around on his 4-wheeler, and he liked to play darts and pool with his dad. And liked to go fishing with is nephew Jordan. Toddy always had a big smile on his face and told you he loved you when parting ways, and was the life of the party and always made people laugh.

She loved playing cards, crossword puzzles, and looked forward to her trips to the casino to gamble and play Bingo. She was an excellent baker and enjoyed gardening.

At the age of 16, his family relocated to Nevis Minnesota where he met the love of his life, Sharon Ila Rice in 1959. He graduated high school in 1960. Garald and Sharon married August 12, 1960. They had five beautiful children together, four sons and a daughter. Garald spent many years as a semi-truck driver traveling the United States. Later he changed employment to Lamb Weston where he retired from in 2004. Some of his favorite things in life were horses, fishing, hunting, his grandchildren and watching old westerns.

She attained her CNA and TMA license and worked for Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care in a career that spanned 21 years. She loved working with and being among elders and was very compassionate. She was married to Sonny Stepaniak on October 29, 2010. They made their home in Redby along with her niece, Clarissa Smith. Andrea enjoyed spending time with her three children, Keith, Kimberly and Kristofor, grandchildren and family. Her granddaughter, Dezarae Alexandrea, was her namesake.  She was always with her niece, Clarissa. Andrea liked going to the casinos and her favorite hobby was collecting many different things.
