Joseph Michael Sullivan - December 03, 1939 - April 28, 2024

Departed: 04/28/2024 (Eastchester)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Michael Sullivan, 84, of Rye Brook, NY, died suddenly on April 28, 2024. He was born in Brooklyn in 1939, to Joseph Sullivan and Rose (Gaffney) Sullivan. As a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, Joe could usually be found playing stickball in the streets or watching his beloved Dodgers at Ebbets Field. While a diehard Mets fan later in life, Joe could usually be seen wearing his favorite Brooklyn Dodgers baseball hat, as recently as last week. He imparted his love of New York sports teams to his children, including his long-suffering role as a Jets fan.
Joe graduated from Archbishop Stepinac in 1957, and played on the football and baseball teams, in addition to running indoor track. Joe first played for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League as a 15-year-old called up mid-season, and would go on to play for the Mariners again when he was older. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1962, balancing the demands of his business degree with four years of playing both football and baseball. Joe’s collegiate football success led to him being drafted by the CFL Montreal Alouettes, however he was drafted by Uncle Sam that same year. So Joe hung up his football cleats and proudly served in the Army National Guard for six years, assigned to the 101st Signal Battalion. Always the competitive athlete, Joe picked up the sport of handball as an adult. He was a well-known, tough competitor with quick hands, playing 4-wall handball for 40 years, with some of his most memorable matches taking place in the Yonkers and Cross Island YMCA’s.
Joe devoted his entire professional career to the brokerage life insurance industry, commencing with his tenure at Met Life in 1963. Progressing through diverse leadership positions, he joined William Penn Life in 1973, ascending to the role of President and Chief Marketing Officer for Banner Life. Instrumental in advancing Banner’s national brokerage business, Joe significantly contributed to its emergence as a premier industry carrier. Joe was also an active board member of the Life Insurance Council of NY and the National Association of Life Underwriters. He concluded his esteemed career with Legal and General America in 2008. Joe had a reputation as an honest, collaborative, hardworking leader whose dry wit and ability to deliver Bob Newhart-esque one-liners could win over the toughest room. Joe was awarded Man of the Year by Cystic Fibrosis of Long Island in 1993, and frequently volunteered for Make-A-Wish and the Special Olympics.
Joe was predeceased by his parents and his brother Ronald Sullivan. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife Mary Ellen (Kamenar) Sullivan. They recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. The loving couple enjoyed a beautiful, full life of family, travel and many fun adventures. Joe was a longtime member of the Coveleigh Club and the NYAC. He is also survived by his children Karen (Kevin) O’Hara and Danny (Mary) Sullivan, and his grandchildren Grace and Declan O’Hara, and Patrick and Kiera Sullivan. Additionally, Joe is survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Joan (Kamenar) Taragan, Frank Kamenar, Paul (Sue) Kamenar, Liz Kamenar, Teresa Kamenar and Joe (Evlin) Kamenar, and many nieces and nephews. Above all else, Joe’s favorite title was Grandpa. Always an expert listener, he was the most selfless and supportive grandparent a child could ask for. He will be dearly missed. The family will receive friends Friday, May 3, 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Westchester Funeral Home, Eastchester. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, May 4, 9:00am at Church of the Resurrection, Rye. Internment to follow at Greenwood Union Cemetery, Rye. Jack Angelo Gravenese - August 03, 1934 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Eastchester)
Obituary Preview: Jack Gravenese, 89, Bronxville, died on March 30, 2024. Born August 3, 1934 to the late Pasquale and Mary (Raia) Gravenese in New York City. He was predeceased by his wife Catherine (Forlani) and his brothers Louis and Patrick. Jack is survived by son; Mark (Josephine Schwegel) Gravenese, daughters ;Dorian (Dan) Glickenhaus and Courtney (Andrew) Williams, grandchildren: Carly and Hannah Glickenhaus , Talia and Jack Williams., sister in laws Carol Forlani, Rosary Forlani.
Jack will be remembered for being a kind, humble man with a big heart and sense of humour. His curiosity to learn new things and his love of his children and grandchildren were the focus of his life. Dad lived modestly; he did not need material things to make him happy. He was committed to his wife, children and of course, his grandchildren. Dad served our country in the US Army, received his hair styling license, and with the support of his wife, bought and ran his successful hair salon, Riviera Hair Stylist in Larchmont, New York for 40 years.
Dad would say that his greatest achievement was raising and educating his three children and seeing his grandchildren grow into amazing young adults.
Growing up we have fond memories of Sunday pasta dinners, listening to country music on Sunday mornings, watching Jet games, and sharing his stories and his 'Jack'isms. He loved telling us stories about his days of service in Paris and he spoke highly of the people he worked with. He was great with people and loved to share his observations about what he learned working in the service industry for so many years. He had an amazing memory for details about history and was quite the movie buff. We could always depend on him to know which actor played what role in a great number of movies. His grandchildren enjoyed the beach vacations and holidays that we all spent together. His time on the beach was very special. He loved the water and always wanted to be with the kids close by the water's edge. He bonded with them by playing checkers, cutting their hair, wearing their college gear, and just teaching the proper way to dunk a cookie!
We will miss him terribly. We promised him that we would make him ( and mom) proud and continue the legacy: We will be humble, be kind and live by the golden rule and always reinforce the importance of a strong family.
May he rest in peace with Mom now.

Eventually, he found his way to Merrill Lynch, starting as a retail broker. He worked through offices in New York City, including the locations at the GM  Building, Penn Towers and the MetLife building. He built a book of clients who became lifelong friends.
Leadership qualities led Mike to management at Merrill Lynch that brought him first to the Mount Kisco office of Merrill Lynch and then the Springfield, Massachussetts outpost where he was proud to have been responsible for the hiring of 50 plus financial advisors. During this time, his family lived for 7 years in nearby Longmeadow, Massachusetts. He finished his storied 41 year career at the Scarsdale and finally the White Plains office.
But while serving his clients was the way he made his living, serving the communities he resided in was Michael’s true calling. In Pelham, he was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, a leader of Little League teams and Scouting Troops. During the Gulf War, he joined the USO at Westover Air Force Base to ensure the mistakes of the homecoming treatment of soldiers he saw during the Vietnam War were not repeated. Upon returning to Westchester County, he became active in the American Red Cross, leading the Westchester Chapter in the days and months after September 11th. In Eastchester, he was active in the Rotary Club, where he served as a chair for the local Gift of Life Program. Through that effort, he helped raise funds for young children throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia with severe heart defects, arranged for their transportation to the US, comfort for their family and life-saving medical care from the power of the New York medical community to donate their time to these necessary surgeries. He served as a leader for the Eastchester chapter of the American Legion, renovating the Leroy Gregory Hall to become a premier event venue, along with an election center for the community and volunteered his time for Veterans causes like parades and memorials. He was an ardent supporter of the Eastchester Historical Society where he served in numerous roles, helping to document residents of Eastchester’s impact on the world. He taught students business, history and culture at Concordia College as an adjunct professor, and hosted museum shows on local heroes of World War I and World War II. His commitment to service throughout his life has been described as “a pillar of service in the community and if your phone rang, you knew Mike was going to be asking you to help with your time, your business or a donation to support a cause he was championing”. Michael was a lifelong student of history and art. He became a self-styled amateur expert on the Gilded Age, P.T. Barnum, Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Nast and many Robber Barons. He could give a detailed tour of almost any neighborhood in New York City, any town in Westchester County, and most places up the Hudson River and Connecticut River Valleys. He was skilled at the piano, though he stuck to his five favorite songs and wrote parodies for friends. He was a supporter of artists, particularly those in New England, and he frequented, with his wife, every gallery and museum he could. The family joke is, there isn’t a museum in the tri-state area that Mom and Dad haven’t been to, at least 5 times!
He was also a lifelong teacher, taking several men and women under his wing as a financial advisor and manager. He had ambitious plans to move every assistant out of their role and into an advisor position. He always kept an eye out for veterans looking to transition from the military to business. Later in his life, as an adjunct professor at Concordia College, he put in extra effort to make sure his students had every opportunity to succeed.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Christine Naughton Fix; his son Michael J. Fix and his wife Alicia Luongo Fix of Melrose, MA, and his grandchildren Lillian Fix and Michael Peter Fix; his son Paul A. Fix and his wife Kathryn Harvill Fix, and his grandchildren Wyatt J. Fix, Virginia Fix and Evelyn Fix of Riverside CT; his brother Thomas Fix and his sister-in-law Kathy Fix of Torrington CT, along with his niece Tracey Fix and her family of Stamford CT, nephew Brian Fix and his family of Waltham MA, nephew Stephen Fix and his family of Enfield CT; along with countless nieces, nephews and two brother-in-laws in Ireland; cousins and extended family members throughout the US.  The outpouring of support from friends, neighbors, colleagues, clients, students and fellow volunteers in every community he touched demonstrates the impact he had on so many to serve life as a humble and kind human being to all in need.
Visiting Hours are from 4 to 8pm on Monday, April 1, at Westchester Funeral Home in Eastchester, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 2 at 9.30 am at Church of Immaculate Conception, 53 Winter Hill Road in Eastchester NY. Felicia Gabriele - August 03, 1923 - March 07, 2024

Departed: 03/07/2024 (Eastchester)
Obituary Preview: Felicia Gabriele died peacefully in Calvary Hospital on March 7, 2024, just a few months after having celebrated her 100th birthday with the family she loved so much. She was born into the Pulice family on August 3, 1923, in Calabria, Italy. When she was eight years old, she emigrated to America with her mother Maria, her older sister Emilia and her older brother Al. Her father (Francesco), whom she had not met until then, and another older brother Louie welcomed them, and they all moved to the Bronx. Felicia was the baby of the family and was coddled. For the rest of her life, she loved to recount stories of the many times her brothers would give her money so she could go to the movies, and of vacations when they took her to Atlantic City and Long Beach and other locales, and of how they always looked over her and protected her. She loved her siblings dearly all her life. Felicia was a vivacious person. She loved to dance. She made lots of friends, with many of whom she stayed close throughout her life. She attended Washington Irving High School in Manhattan, where she learned pattern-making---something she was very proud of.
In 1947, she married Florian Gabriele, a wonderful man who adored her, and they started a family. She had two children, Richard and Patricia. She made a happy home for them all. Felicia and her sister and their families lived in the same house for many years, as did their mother, and her brother Louis lived with his family around the block, and her other brother Al passed by every day, so there were always lots of kids, laughing and noise in the house on Colden Avenue. Most of all, Felicia loved children. Before she was married, she would babysit the children of her brother and sister. Then she was so happy when Richard and Charlotte got married and gave her two grandsons, Joe and Josh, whom she thoroughly enjoyed babysitting. In time, Joe married Meg and had two daughters---Gigi and Vivi. Josh then married Cait and had two children--Cammie and Shane. She loved smooching these great grandchildren and holding them on her lap. That was the best and most joyous thing in life for her. There was a time in her life when Felicia had some illness and was sickly. But she battled through it and eventually enjoyed relatively good health, due in large part to the amazing care and devotion that she received from her daughter Patricia. Felicia is survived by her son and daughter; her daughter-in-law; her two grandsons and their wives; her four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and their offspring. She was a good person, and we will all miss her very much.
There will be a wake to celebrate her life and mourn her passing on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, between 4 pm and 8 pm at the Westchester Funeral Home, 190 Main Street, Eastchester, NY, and then at a funeral Mass at 10:30 am the following day at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 8 Carman Road, Scarsdale NY. Anyone wishing to make a gift in her name, in lieu of flowers, may make a donation to Calvary Hospital. This facility gave Felicia wonderful care and support during the final four months of her life. https://fund.calvaryhospital.org/ways-to-give/give-once/
