Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for those who are grieving.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, as well as any charitable donations or condolences.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Some online obituary platforms may allow for longer or more detailed tributes.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. These can be recent photos or ones from throughout the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for the publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that includes biographical information and often celebrates the person's life.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to make the obituary publicly available, you can opt for a private or password-protected online posting. Alternatively, you can choose not to publish an obituary at all.

This depends on the platform. Some online obituary sites allow you to add links to videos, photo albums, or other memorials, while others may not permit attachments.

How do I find an old obituary?

What if I'm unsure about certain details in the obituary?

If you're unsure about specific facts or dates, it's better to err on the side of caution and omit that information rather than risk publishing inaccurate details.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber; they can reflect the person's personality and sense of humor. Including lighthearted anecdotes or witty one-liners can help celebrate their life.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately to report any errors. They may be able to correct the mistake and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Yes! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience and reach more people who knew the deceased.

Can I include charitable donations or fundraising information in an obituary?

Yes! Many people choose to include information about charitable donations or fundraising efforts in memory of their loved one. This can be a meaningful way to continue their legacy.

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Taking on this task during a time of grief can be challenging. Consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member, and don't hesitate to take breaks when needed. Remember that writing an obituary is a way to honor your loved one's memory and celebrate their life.
