Obituary Preview: James “Jim” Wayne Trull, 98, of Candler passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Aston Park Health Care Center. A native of Canton, NC, he was the son of the late Edward Faraday and Elsie Rogers Trull. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Ruby Thomason; brother-in-law, Benny Young and brothers, Carroll Trull and William Trull.
Jim proudly served in the US Navy during WWII.  Following his military service, he was employed with Champion International for 35 years.  He was a member of Frances Asbury United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Annie “Nellie” Laney Trull; daughter, Rita Hall of Fletcher; son, Randy Trull and his partner, Carole of Newport, TN; sister, Ruth Young of Clyde; brother-in-law, Frank Thomason; four grandchildren, Rhonda Fuller (Kent), Sterling Trull, Jeri Trull and Josie Ballew (Drew Priode) and two great-grandchildren, Logan Ellingwood and Hunter Ellingwood (Chloe).

I ask that you will guide me in my life. Help me, Lord, to live my life in such a manner that when I make that last ride to the country up there, where the grass grows lush and the water runs cool, that you'll take me by the hand and say,
"Welcome home, Cowboy".
Kenneth “RoHo” Charles Messer, 85, of Fletcher joined his heavenly family on Sunday, April 23, 2023 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.  A native of Madison County, RoHo resided in Buncombe County for most of his life.  A son of the late Jesse and Lucy Messer, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Glenda Messer in March 2023; four brothers, Paul (Ruby), Jesse (Shirley), Don and Carroll.
He is survived by his brother, Bob (Opal); sisters, Mary and Fay; daughter, Kim and son, Kelly.
A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family plans a celebration of life at a later date.
The care of Mr. Messer has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.

Ward Russell Stiles - March 29, 1954 - April 18, 2023

Obituary Preview: Ward Russell Stiles, 69, of Candler passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at his residence. Born at Fort Jackson, SC, Ward was the son of the late Harley Donald and Glenna Warren Stiles. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Warren Lee Stiles.
Ward retired from CP & L/Duke Energy as a Control Room Operator after a 45-year career. He was a member of Hominy Masonic Lodge 491 A.E. & A.M and the Knights of Solomon Masonic Lodge 774 A.F. and A.M., a past board member and volunteer with Enka Candler Volunteer Fire and Rescue and a member of Buncombe County Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Glena Chris Ward Stiles; two daughters, Meredith Doehling and her husband, Jon of Denver, CO and Laurel Stiles of Candler; sister, Norma Warren and her husband, Edwin of Canton and two grandchildren, Ada and James Doehling.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Snow Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Tom Hunter officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church, following the service.  Ward’s Masonic Brothers will serve as honorary pall bearers.

Margaret Regina Meadows - March 03, 1941 - April 08, 2023

Obituary Preview: Margaret Regina Rathbone Meadows (aka The Warden) age 82 of Candler (aka The Rock) passed away April 8th after a brief illness. Heaven has gained a soldier and angel.
Margaret was the last surviving child of Margaret Carleen Cody Rathbone and Orville William Rathbone. In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by her son, Virgil Lee Meadows, Jr.: Sisters, Mary Alice Rathbone, Ruba Lee Rathbone Caldwell, Hester Rosetta Rathbone Cagle, Sally Kathryn Rathbone Morgan, Amanda Evelyn Rathbone Meadows and one brother, Raymond Elie "Dutch" Rathbone.
Margaret is survived by her husband of nearly 64 years, Virgil lee Meadows, Sr and daughter, Janet Elaine Meadows of the home. As well as her dog, Scarlett and cats, Sadie and Diamond.
Margaret retired from American Enka/BASF after 38 years of service. Additionally, Margaret championed the Civil Rights of others especially the disabled and those who could not speak for themselves. She was a soldier and an angel.
Margaret’s strength and humor resonated with everyone she met.  To her nephews she was “The Warden” and her home “The Rock”.
Her generosity knew no bounds she would give anything for those she loved. Once you walked in her door you were no longer a stranger but a member of the family. Margaret was an avid gardener who loved all flowers. She also loved cooking, canning and making crafts.  She is the last of the true “Mountain women” in her family.
Margaret will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of meeting and knowing her, but she will be missed most as mother and wife.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Homer and Madeline Tow Edwards. She was also preceded in death by her husband Charles Johnson Sr.; two brothers, Gene and Ray Edwards; sister, Edith Ledbetter and son-in-law, Jamey Moery.
Betty was loved by everybody she met. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and would think up reasons to have family gatherings. Betty loved to go on spontaneous trips with Charles and the kids. She was a long-time member of Emma United Methodist Church and a current member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Inman, South Carolina.
She is survived by a son, Chuck Johnson (Debi) of Leicester; three daughters, Phyllis Moery and Kerri Russell (John) of Inman, South Carolina, and Kelli Johnson of Hendersonville; six grandchildren, Nathan Moery (Teresa), Chase Moery, Aaron Johnson, Madeline Smith, Dylan Russell and Lexi Russell, and a  special niece, Claudia Hines (Barry) who was like a daughter to her; niece, Brenda Ball and nephew, Dennis Edwards. She was lovingly known as “Nana” to many, including Samantha Matott, Misty Rice, Marcy Wike, David Rice, and many others too numerous to name.

A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Glen Clarence and Sadie Gwendolyn Warren Wilson. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Roger Zebb Holcombe in 1955; her second husband, Alvin Holcombe in 1996; sister, Carolyn Orlowski and two brothers, Jimmy Wilson and Calvin Wilson.
Judith was employed as a machine operator for 12 years with BASF plant.  She enjoyed spending time with friends and family and also outings with the PACE program.  She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Debra Holcombe of Arden; son, Glen Richard Green and his wife, Janet of Mills River; two sisters, Patricia Trimnal  and Cynthia Parton both of Candler; two brothers, Tom Wilson  of Candler and Bobby Wilson and his wife, Rachel of Canton; four grandchildren, Brian Weatherman and his wife, Brenda, Chris Weatherman and his wife, Jodi, Sarah Sawyer and her husband, Brandon and Hannah Cantrell and her husband, Mitchell; nine great-grandchildren, Trent (Sabrina) and Tanner (Kyra), Madison (Reid), Kayley, Victoria, Sebastian, Julius, Avalyn and Lauren; great-great grandchildren, Gavin, Asher and Elias and special friend, Patsy Davidson.

Glenda Lee Shuford Messer, 79 of Fletcher joined her heavenly family on Friday, March 10, 2023 at Pardee Hospital. A native of Buncombe County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Fred Lee and Francis Mack Shuford.
Glenda was of the Baptist faith and was a shining example of a christian woman. To know to her was to love her. She was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Laws.  She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Charles Messer; daughter, Kim L. Miller; son, Kelly C. Messer and two sisters, Alice Barrett and Nancy Shepherd. Also surviving her niece, Sherry Buckner along with many other nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family plans to have a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her life partner, William Emory; son, Robert Lee Sawyer; brother, J.T. Bond; sister, Ora Mae Wooten and daughter-in-law, Deborah N. Sawyer.
Mary was raised in Asheville and graduated from Lee Edwards High School.  She retired from Patla, Straus, Robinson & Moore, PA where she had worked most of her life as a legal secretary.  Family bonding and card games were some of Mary’s favorite pastimes, she loved playing Yahtzee and was avid about her NY Times word puzzles.  A real wanderlust, she enjoyed traveling.  She was a member of VFW Post 891 in Asheville. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including, Teresa Ingle and her husband, Ronnie of Asheville, Beverly Wooten of Mooresville, NC and Patricia Moore of Kingsport, TN

Irene was married to Roger Talbot and is survived by their four children, Sharon Talbot Buckles, Chris Talbot, Margaret Talbot Dunbar, and Gordon Talbot; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren (and counting).
Known for passion for her children and compassion for the elderly, Irene loved travel and gardening.

Lucy Darleen Deitz - July 20, 1962 - February 12, 2023

Obituary Preview: Lucy Darleen Deitz, 60, of Asheville, NC passed away February 12, 2023.  She is survived by her wife, Karen Brinkley and her two dogs, Abby and Rudy.
A native of Canton, she was the daughter of the late Roy Deitz and Frances West Deitz.  Lucy was a firm believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.  She was a 1980 graduate of Pisgah High School and attended Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC where she received a degree in accounting.  A successful entrepreneur, Lucy had lived in and around the Greenville, SC area for around 35 years.  She had resided in Asheville, NC for the last four years.
The awards Lucy received in high school were memorable moments where she was voted, Most Courteous.  She was president of many clubs and was on homecoming court for two years.  She was awarded best fielder in softball for two years in a row.  Her name or picture was constantly on the front sports section of the Mountaineer newspaper. Lucy was a natural athlete, if she threw a side armed throw and you caught it, your hand was going to burn.
Also surviving are an older sister, Debby Deitz of Marietta, SC; older brother, Jeff Deitz of Hampton, VA; nephew, Mark Parris and niece, Tammy Parris Ensley both of Canton; niece, Wendy Deitz and Tara Deitz Schwartz and nephew, Jason Deitz all of Hampton, VA and nine great nieces and nephews. Lucy also leaves her aunt and uncle, Rosemary and George Hutchins; numerous cousins; Pauline Brinkley who was more like a mother to her and dear friends, Debra Padilla and Edith Sherlin.
A celebration of life will be held for friends and family in the spring.

Juanita Rhew - September 09, 1935 - January 08, 2023

Obituary Preview: Juanita R. Rhew, 87, of Asheville went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center.  She was daughter of the late Henry and Pearl Flannigan Raines.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack “Frank” Franklin Rhew in 2016 and son, Jerry Rhew in 2013. As the youngest of 10 children, her five brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.
Mamaw Rhew dearly loved the Lord and she was a mighty prayer warrior.  She loved being mama and mamaw, her whole world revolved around her family and her prized possessions were her children and grandchildren.  She so enjoyed when someone would take her to yard sales.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Jan Rhew Cleveland of Asheville, Judy Rhew Lanning and her husband, Jim of Asheville, Jock Rhew and his wife, Cindy of Leicester and Kathy Rhew Sproles and her husband, Jim of Spartanburg, SC; daughter-in-law, Donna Ledford Rhew; thirteen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, 754 Aiken Road, Asheville, NC.  Reverend Keith Watkins will officiate.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church, beginning at 5:00 p.m.

A native of Indiana, she was a daughter of the late Anthony J. and Blanche Smolek Cira.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ryan Simons.  Sandi retired after many years as a clerk with the United States Postal Service.  She enjoyed being outside, animals, especially cats and pottery.  Sandi volunteered with Feline Urgent Rescue (FUR) of Haywood County.
Sandi is survived by her goddaughter, Thuy Thuong "Joy" Trantham, and her husband, Chad; brother Ric Cira; three grand goddaughters; one grand godson; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2023 in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Pastor Lee O’Briant officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

W. and Bertha Mae Burgess Timmons.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Calvin LeRoy Heiskell and a granddaughter, Kelly Andrew.
A 1943 graduate of Dalhart, Texas, Dorothy spent her early years in Texas and New Mexico and married Calvin “Cal” Heiskell in 1947. She took some classes at Haywood Tech Community College and volunteered with a hospital in Anderson, South Carolina. Her hobbies included bowling, playing cards, dominoes, sewing and weaving. Her favorite pastime was square-dancing with Cal, which they enjoyed for decades and even won an award.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Nancy Andrew of Knoxville, TN; sons, Larry Heiskell and his wife, Betsy of Knoxville, TN and Tim Heiskell and his wife, Rebecca of Glen Alpine, NC; four grandchildren, Kansas Heiskell Cook, Hannah Heiskell and Michael Heiskell all of NC and Tyler Andrew of Maryville, TN; three great-grandchildren, Oliver and Lilly Cook of NC and Aylee Andrew of Maryville, TN.
A memorial service will be held at Knoxville Christian Center at a later date.
The care of Mrs. Heiskell has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.

A native of Buncombe County, Peggy was the daughter of the late Ralph and Sarah Thomas Gosnell; in addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Jack Gosnell, and his wife, Dorothy; sisters, Clara Lovingood and Faye Deal; two brother-in-law’s James Lovingood and Jim Valentine; and three beloved nieces.
Peggy is survived by her husband, Mark Radford; her daughter, Rene Radford, and her friend, Tamra Dawsey; sister’s, Joyce Stepp, and her husband, Jim, and Deane Valentine; four nieces and two nephews.  The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Pisgah Manor for the care of their mother.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 2, 2022, at Wells Funeral Home Candler at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with Pastor Bryan Myers.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. at the Wells Chapel of Faith. He was a longtime member of Inanda Baptist Church where he served many years as a deacon. He was a self-employed electrical contractor since 1971 until his retirement.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Frank, Ralph, and William, his sisters, Edna, Elizabeth, Annie, Dorothy, and Betty.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maxine; his son, George and his wife, Karen; his son, Terry and his wife, Lisa; a daughter, Beverly and her husband, Tommy; a granddaughter, Megan and her husband, Dylan; and great-granddaughter, Isla.

Dr. Samuel "Sam" Gene Speciale - April 22, 1944 - November 19, 2022

Obituary Preview: Samuel Gene Speciale, known to many as Sam, was born April 22, 1944, in Highland Park, Illinois, and died unexpectedly November 19, 2022, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Sam lived science to his core, always voicing “healthy skepticism” in any situation. He had no hesitation to explain how things worked from the mechanical, physiological, or anatomical standpoints, earning the name “Dr. Science” from his friend and future wife, Linda.
Sam graduated from Charlotte High School in Rochester, New York, in 1962, during which time he knew he wanted to become a scientist. He received a New York State Regents Scholarship to attend Colgate University and received his AB degree with a major in biology in 1966 and entered the Department of Pharmacology at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine as a graduate student in September of 1966. He was a US Public Service Trainee for four years and then received an NIH Predoctoral Fellowship.  Upon receipt of his PhD, he received financial support for post-doctoral research in the Lyon, France, laboratory of Professor Michel Jouvet, a pioneer of sleep research. Not long after returning to the US, Sam began doing research at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington, DC, as an NIH employee. In September of 1978, he was hired by internationally known Dr. Howard (Howie) Roffwarg, Head of the Psychiatry Department Sleep Research Lab at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, where he met his future wife, Linda. Sam did sleep research, Alzheimer’s research, and Parkinson’s research for 25 years, in addition to teaching some classes in the medical school. He published numerous papers and received awards and commendations for his work. After retiring in 2003, Sam decided he didn’t want to leave science, so he returned to NIH in the National Institute of Aging (NIA) as an administrator for aging research.  He retired again in 2008 when he and Linda moved to Asheville.
Sam’s intellectual curiosity was intense, and he had many interests, especially music, art, photography, film, experimental theatre, running, hiking in the deserts and mountains of New Mexico and the mountains of North Carolina, camping, world travel, and even square dancing with the Asheville-based Folk Heritage Smooth Dancers. He was also a dedicated volunteer with the NC Arboretum, Buncombe County Democratic Party, and the Folk Heritage Committee. Sam’s last two days were most joyful spent in the company of his brother Larry from Florida.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel G. Speciale Sr. and Beatrice Marie Pero Speciale, and is survived by his wife, Linda K. Smathers; brother, Louis (Nanda) of Fair Haven, NY; brother, Lawrence of Jacksonville, FL; sister, Susan (Richard) Antenozzi of Rochester, NY; sister, Barbara McCutchen of Asheville; step-daughter, Kaylyn (Richard) Groves of Chattanooga, TN; step-grandchildren, Mary-Alice and Maxwell Groves of Chattanooga, TN; aunt, Bessie Speciale of Rochester, NY; and uncle, Donald Pero of Rochester, NY;  and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. The family is grateful for the kind and attentive care provided by the Givens Estate Health Center staff.
