Mathias "Matt" Hatzenbuhler - March 07, 1926 - April 19, 2022

Departed: 04/19/2022 (Mandan)
Obituary Preview: Our dad, Mathias “Matt” Hatzenbuhler, born March 7, 1926, was reunited with the love of his life, Anna (Haider), on April 19, 2022, after a short stay at Missouri Slope.
Dad first noticed Mom at the Odense Church, but like he said, “At the time she was too young for dating.” When Dad was drafted into WWII, he prayed God would keep Anna available and that one day she would become his wife.
Upon his return, he drove into her parents’ yard, and with her siblings running about, she ran up to him and asked,        “Do you want to take me to a movie?” That was the beginning of their courtship. On June 19, 1951, at the very church Dad first laid eyes on her, they were united in a 70 year marriage. Together they spent the best years of their lives farming and raising their seven children. As Mom would say,              “Dad is a good man.” Although he was a man of few words, Dad spoke to God often. Church, prayers, and rosaries were part of his daily life. Upon moving to town in 2000, he could often be seen briskly walking to and from St. Joseph’s Church several times a day. As one priest said, “Matt, I think you spend more time in the church than I do.” Although Mom began showing signs of dementia 10 years ago, Dad promised to take care of her to the end.  Even though his health began to fail around Christmas 2021, and they both ended up in Edgewood Vista, Dad was by her side when she passed.  We can only imagine Mom’s reaction when she saw Dad enter Heaven: “Where did you come from? Where were you?”
Dad will be deeply missed by his five daughters, Marlene (Dennis) Bender, Mandan, Lorraine Berger (Merle Vandeberg), Mandan, Judy Staley (Doug Baldacci), VA, Jane (John) Reede, Bismarck, and Annette Hausauer, Mandan; two sons, Larry (Mary), Bismarck and Jeff (Tara), Mandan; brother, Christ; sisters-in-law, Isabelle and Helen, all of Mandan; 18 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna (February 20, 2022); parents, Anton and Julia (Scheetz); granddaughter, Cassie Shaw-Hatzenbuhler; son-in-law, Quinten Hausauer; sisters and brother-in-law, infant Margaret and Margaret (John) Zueger; brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred, Anton, John (Ann), Joe (Florence) and Hildegarde.
A joint Mass of Christian burial for both Matt and his brother, Tony, who died just hours before him, will take place at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 25, 2022, at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mandan, with Fr. Josh Waltz celebrating.  Both men will be buried at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.  Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Sunday, April 24, 2022, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Parish Rosary/Vigil at 7 PM.  Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Jackie was born on January 24, 1943, in Wichita, KS.  Her parents, Jack and Clementine Steckler, relocated their family to St Anthony, North Dakota in 1945.  Jackie was the oldest of four, named after her father, Jack, who shared his passion for music with her.  He even drove Jackie 13 miles to and from piano lessons each week.  Jackie also learned to play the organ at a young age, and by the time she was in the sixth grade she was playing for daily Mass, Sunday Masses, and all Catholic Holidays.
Jackie graduated from Mandan High, Class of 1961.  She remained humbled years later, to have been crowned the 1961 Homecoming Queen.  She met the love of her life, Henry Beckler, as a sophomore in high school. When Jackie turned 16, Henry gifted Jackie the 45 record of “Sixteen Candles”, which they listened to throughout the years.  They were married on June 30, 1962.  Together they had three boys, Mark, Timothy and Corey.  Jackie and Henry raised their family in Mandan, ND.
Jackie started a career in the banking business before finishing high school, working at First National Bank where she assisted numerous German speaking farmers to secure loans, as she understood the German language.  Following graduation, Jackie was offered a permanent position with First National Bank and continued with them through five name changes eventually becoming Wells Fargo Bank, where she retired after 42 years.  Two years after retirement, Jackie missed her beloved customers along with the social aspect of the banking world, so she went back to work.  She started with the Railway Credit Union in Mandan, where she worked an additional 12 years before her final retirement in 2014.  While at the Credit Union, Jackie started the “Senior Program”, which she remained part of following her retirement.
Jackie enjoyed numerous activities throughout her life.  When her children were younger, these included camping, fishing, bowling and supporting the Mandan Braves.  Later in her years, she enjoyed playing Bingo, going to the casino, attending her grandchildren’s sporting events and watching the Minnesota Twins with Henry.  Jackie also had many close groups of girlfriends that she enjoyed spending time with, including her “birthday club friends”, her “senior club”, and lunches with her siblings: Wally, Deanie and Lindy.
Jackie’s greatest joy was her family.  She spent years hosting extended family for all Holidays.  It was not a Holiday, if going to Henry and Jackie’s wasn’t on the schedule.  As the family grew, many of her great nieces and nephews referred to her as the “other grandma”.  Jackie also had a number of godchildren that she had very special relationships with, and made sure to acknowledge each of their birthdays year after year.  Her pride and joy were her grandchildren.  She hosted many sleepovers that included movies, endless games, and donuts dipped in her homemade chocolate sauce and a never-ending jug of red Kool-Aid.  Jackie’s family always looked forward to her famous Grandma Cookies, brownies and pumpkin bars.  She didn’t believe in a dollop of whipped topping on the pumpkin pie either, she thought it was perfectly fine to cover the entire pie.  Jackie was a wonderful cook and among her family’s favorites were her pork-chops and rice, and pigs in a blanket.  As Jackie and Henry grew into their retirement years, they perfected their “famous gourmet pickle recipe” for all to enjoy at family gatherings.  They also enjoyed going to Applebee’s and A & B Pizza, where the wait staff got to know them and each of their grandchildren through the stories they shared.
Jackie had the kindest of hearts.  Visiting with her was like talking to a longtime friend.  She always remembered you and could ask detailed questions about your family after only one encounter.  Those who knew Jackie would describe her as a classy, loving woman, who loved and cared for her family deeply.
Jackie is survived by her husband, Henry; sons, Mark, Tampa, FL, Timothy and his wife Gwen, and their children Alex (Eric), Sean (Annie) and Madison, Bismarck ND, Corey and his wife Laura, and their children Isadora, Stella and Luci, Goodyear AZ; great-grandchildren, Ruby and Bodee Beckler, Cambrie and soon-to-be baby Rumple; siblings, Wally (Madonna) Steckler, Deanie (Butch) Cermak, Lindy (Gordy) Rauser; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.  Jackie is also survived by her lifetime best friend, Judy (Gary) Becker.
Welcoming her to heaven are her parents, Jack and Clementine Steckler, and grandsons, Noah Beckler and Ethan Beckler.
Jackie’s family would like to thank their family and friends for all their support.  A special thank you to all of the care staff at St Gabriel’s and CHI Hospice for their support and care.

The middle child of 15, he celebrated being brother and uncle to so many. He started school at St. Mary’s Catholic School. The family move to Strasburg during the middle of his grade school years. At a very early age he went to work on local farms and hunted and fished to help provide for his family and had a local Friday fish delivery route taking bullheads he caught to different families around town.
After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and served a year of active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
In 1963 he met Marge Hurkes, from Hazelton, and they were married in September of 1964. He completed his college degree in Industrial Arts in 1967, graduating from Moorhead State and taught for several years at Mandan High School. During his college and teaching summers he worked for Northern Improvement Construction as an equipment operator.
In 1975 he started Aberle Construction, building homes in the Mandan/Bismarck area and served as the North Dakota Home Builders Association president. He employed brothers and nephews, sharing the skills he had learned from his own dad who he had worked closely with over the years. In 1981 he transitioned to Northern Improvement fulltime, working across the State until taking on the duties as their repair shop superintendent and retiring as their Equipment Manager in 2006. Northern Improvement was a big part of his life, sharing this work with family and making many friends along the way. In all of his work there was a great sense of pride in the accomplishments, and he never stopped saying, “We built that. We accomplished this.”
Throughout his life hunting, fishing, taking care of his land and snowmobiling and “wrenching” were his hobbies. A diehard Ski-doo loyalist, his shop was home to snowmobile and small engine repair to the end. And these traditions have been passed to his kids and grandkids as “think snow” and a “conservation ethic” permeate his family.
His passion was people. In his own way of humor and honesty, he saw people and cared for them with a sincerity of heart. A firm handshake and infectious laugh, with a glint in his eye, made folks feel seen when they were with him. His love was his family. Sharing 57 years of marriage with Marge, their dedication to one another will always be evident. He instilled in his kids a love of the wild Rockies and his daughter Missy and husband Shane (Kesterke) live in NW Montana with their children: Caleb, Isaac, Luke, Nick, Ben, Isabell, Zander and Claire & husband Jonah (Rosen) and son Boaz. His son Ray (RJ) and his wife Jen (Mattern) live in the Colorado foothills with their children Makabe, Lucille and Josephine.
He is survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters.
What he touched, he blessed through his dedication to hard work and his commitment to others.

Frances J Berger - August 29, 1921 - March 25, 2022

Departed: 03/25/2022 (Mandan)
Obituary Preview: After more than a century, Frances J. Berger’s battle with acting her age came to a close on March 25, 2022.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 1, 2022, at St. Vincent Church, Crown Butte, ND with Father Nick Schneider as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM.
Frances was born at home on August 29, 1921 near Crown Butte, northwest of Mandan, ND, a happy day for her beloved parents John J. and Clementine (Barnhardt) Schlosser, and was the oldest of two daughters.  Mathilda (Tille Miller) Schlosser completed their little family three years later.
A self-proclaimed “curious child”, Frances was out-going, tenacious, and to read between the lines, sometimes mischievous.  She loved living and growing up nearby her paternal uncles, aunts, and cousins of whom lovingly referred to her as Little Frances since an older cousin already shared the name.  Frances attended country school and graduated from the 8th grade.
Frances was a lifelong member of the St. Vincent de Paul parish, Crown Butte, ND.  She appreciated that she was baptized, confirmed, and married at St. Vincent’s.  Her wish was to have her funeral at St. Vincent’s and so it shall be.
It was at St. Vincent’s that she first met Lawrence K. Berger when she was 4 years old and he was 8 years old.  That summer her mother took Frances to the Berger farm to visit Lawrence’s sister-in-law Rosemary, who was Clementine’s cousin.  During this visit Lawrence asked Frances to go pick cherries with him and some of his siblings, and so began their courtship.
Frances enjoyed working alongside her dad on the farm.  Since she was the oldest, she helped him work the fields, harvest, and put up hay with their teams of horses.  Frances adored all animals.  When her dad would be far enough ahead and was out of view, she’d oftentimes stop to give her horses a break so they could graze and rest a little.  Frances learned to drive and got her driver’s license when she was 14 so that she could help more around the farm, including driving to town to get parts.  When Frances’s dad bought his first tractor, the salesman first taught Frances to drive the tractor, and then she taught her dad how to use it.
Frances learned to sew and embroider from her mother and became an incredible seamstress who was able to sew whatever she wanted, sometimes creating her own patterns. She took violin lessons as a child and learned from her dad how to dance Polka and Waltzes.  She and Lawrence would become outstanding dance partners.  They seldom missed a weekend of dancing at one of the various clubs to which they belonged.  Frances’s love of polka music would remain constant throughout her entire life.  She taught her grandchildren to Polka and Waltz by practicing around the kitchen table while listening to the Polka Party on Sundays from Noon-2:00pm on 1130AM KBMR.
After 15 years of courting, Frances and Lawrence married on April 14, 1941.  They moved into the Berger family house on the Berger homestead about 5 miles from where Frances grew up.  They began farming with Lawrence’s brothers and were married for 62 years when Lawrence passed away on July 6, 2003.  Their early years of marriage were not ideal as Lawrence was drafted into the US Army and left for training in April 1942.  Luckily, Frances was able to travel with Lawrence while he was training stateside.  During this time, they would live in Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, and Mississippi.  Frances recalled her favorite time of day was watching Reveille first thing in the morning.  Frances often took on jobs during this time including as a nanny for twin girls, working in a store, and working in the laundry on one of the bases.   Lawrence shipped out in 1942 and Frances made the long, sad train ride home alone where she would move in again with her parents and Tillie until Lawrence returned from WWII in late fall of 1945.  They then moved back to the Berger home and started farming again.
On November 28, 1951, Larry was born to Frances and Lawrence and Della joined them on April 9th, 1959.  The Berger family farmed and ranched until retirement in 1975.  They raised shorthorn cattle and small grains, milked and sold cream, raised chickens and sold eggs, put up huge gardens which were harvested and the produce used and canned and stored for the winter months. In between the outside work, Frances found time to make family-favorite goodies including snowballs, dry donuts, homemade caramels, and homemade maple nut ice cream.
Along the way all kinds of animals, big and small, were raised on the farm and many ended up being pets, including turkeys, geese, ducks, a sheep named Patsy, guinea fowl (Frances was always curious), a racoon named Mikey, plus many much-loved dogs, scores of rabbits, aquariums of fish, guinea pigs, pet mice, and too many kitties to count.
Della married Ben Kopp in 1977 and Lee and Dawn showed up quite shortly after.  Lee & Dawn spent a whole bunch of time and many days at Grandpa and Grandma Berger’s house.  Grandma made sure to keep Schwan’s fudgesicles in the freezer for Lee and a variety of dried fruit in the cupboard next to the sink for Dawn.
Lee married Alaina in 2010, and a bit later Macy & Evan joined the crew.  Frances loved being a great-grandma too and always hoped to live long enough to meet her great grandchildren.  We are all so lucky that she did.
Throughout the 100 years and 7 months that Frances spent earthside, she saw it all: rural electricity, indoor running water, invention of television, colorized television, wind up to rotary-to push button-to cordless-to cell phones, the invention of the internet.  Frances did not lack for hobbies or things that interested her.  Frances loved to drive and drive fast.  The only reason she stopped driving at age 96 was because her right knee wore down.  Frances learned carpentry from her oldest brother-in-law and built all of the closets in her house, just as a start.  Frances continued to sew into her 90s and was an excellent shopper.  Shopping for fabric was one of Frances’s favorite pastimes, much to the exhaustion of her kids and/or grandkids who ended up spending what seemed like endless hours - maybe time literally stopped - at So-Fro, Joanne’s, and what became Hancock Fabrics.  Frances made the basement into her sewing room and had shelves full of fabric, thread & bobbins, notions & tools, and everything the best seamstress could ever need.  After returning home, Frances would bring in the bags of fabric from the week’s fabric buying and immediately throw them down the basement steps, thinking Lawrence didn’t know.  He always knew what that “thud” was as the bags hit the bottom landing.
Everyone and everything loved Frances.  Besides humans and animals, all plants wanted to grow for her.  She loved to “experiment” with unique plant species and varieties.  She seemingly just needed to breathe on a struggling flower or vegetable plant, and it would produce a bumper crop.  Frances also enjoyed experimenting with new foods and “could eat anything”.  She introduced her family early to kiwi and other tropical fruits and loved onions and putting salsa on most anything.  Powder sugar frosting was the bane of her taste buds, but she loved marshmallows, Peeps at Easter, and cotton candy, and considered no amount of coconut to be too much.
Frances was not a person to take no for an answer, and her childhood tenacity proved her well into adulthood and the eight decades that followed.  She was particular and precise, effortlessly graceful and stylish.  She was sharp and always willing to share memories.  She was a patient teacher albeit a stickler for details.  She was loved and adored, and we will all miss her so very much.
Frances is survived by her son, Larry F. Berger, MD, Eden Prairie, MN, daughter and son-in-law, Della and Ben Kopp, her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Lee & Alaina Kopp and their children, Macy & Evan, all of Mandan, ND, and her granddaughter, Dawn Kopp, Bismarck, ND, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, her parents, John J. & Clementine Schlosser, her in-laws, Lorenz D. and Rosa Berger, her sister and brother-in-law, Tillie & Joe Miller, and so many pets.

After marriage, they resided in Huff when George worked for Eugene Graner before moving to the Taylor farmstead south of Mandan in 1974. Alice was always busy on the farm, taking care of her children, working in the garden, or delivering eggs to family and friends. Alice was also devoted to her community throughout her life. She was a member of the Custer Flats Ladies group for over 50 years, while also contributing to the American Legion and Mandan Eagles. She served as a 4-H leader and judge’s helper at the Morton County Fair. Alice enjoyed sewing, knitting, making afghans for her children, and spending time with her grandchildren. She made thousands of dishcloths and dish scrubbers for family and friends. She became so well known for her dish scrubbers that those lucky enough to get one fondly referred to the kitchen sink staple as an “Alice.”

Departed: 03/02/2022 (Mandan)
Obituary Preview: Kathleen C. (Rennich) Lanz received her wings on March 2nd, 2022, at the age of 90, surrounded by her caretakers at Edgewood Mandan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 8th at Spirit of Life Catholic Church in Mandan with Fr. Todd Kreitinger as celebrant.  Burial will follow in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Monday at Weigel Funeral Home with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service.
.
On October 25th, 1931, Kathleen was born in Mandan, ND, the daughter of Jacob and Magdalene (Vogel) Berger. She was raised and educated with her seven siblings in Mandan, where she resided her whole life. After completing some high school education, Kathleen lost her mother and became a caretaker to her younger siblings. She did this not out of obligation, but simply because of who she was and her compassionate nature. She had a heart for service and was always the first to offer help. Thus, her love for gardening, cooking, and all things ‘homemaker’ began at a young age. At age 19, she met and fell in love with George Rennich Sr. They married in 1951 and together raised five beautiful children: Lynn, George Jr., Dave, Mary, and John.
Kathleen cared deeply for her family, friends, and neighbors. Her heart was truly enormous; she ensured that all who crossed her path were fed, safe, healthy, and happy. Her warmth, love, and kindness were not limited to people, as she was also an animal lover. She had a sincere smile and a friendly word for everyone, but her most significant impact was being the hands and feet of Jesus. Kathleen was an active member of her home church, Spirit of Life, where she led adorations and volunteered countless hours at the soup kitchen. She was a phenomenal cook; in fact, her buns were second to none, earning her the reputation as “the bun lady” in her community. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Kathleen. She enjoyed a good crossword puzzle, book, soap opera, and reclining in her favorite chair. After celebrating 40 years of marriage, Kathleen lost her husband, George Rennich Sr., to a tumultuous battle of cancer in 1991. She was later re-married to Harland “Red” Lanz, and they shared 19 wonderful years together before he too, lost a battle to cancer. Kathleen’s love for people, animals, gardening, and cooking lives on with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Lynn (Kenneth) Weiand of Mandan; three sons, George (Linda) Rennich of Mandan, Dave (Mary) Rennich of Bismarck, and John Rennich of Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Chris Weiand of Mandan, Craig (Kim) Rennich of West Fargo, Melanie (Ian) Flanders of Bismarck, Corey (LeAnn) Rennich of Bismarck, Jenny (Travis) Gatzke of Mandan, Jesse (Victoria Bellon) Rennich of Bismarck, and Sam Rennich of Bismarck; and eight great-grandchildren.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Magdalene Berger; her seven siblings; her spouses, George Rennich Sr., and Harland Lanz; her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Dion Palen; and her grandson, Jacob Rennich.
The family of Kathleen would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Edgewood Mandan and CaringEdge Hospice for providing the utmost care and making her last days of life full of peace and comfort.
