Melvin Whisman - March 13, 1934 - May 07, 2023

Departed: 05/07/2023 (Wabeno)
Obituary Preview: Heaven gained a very special man when Melvin Whisman passed away on May 7th, 2023. Mel was a very humble man from simple beginnings in the Town of Lily Wisconsin.
He was born March 13th 1934 to Jessie and Dillard Whisman. He attended the Lily School until 8th grade. Then he finished high school in White Lake. It was his first year that they began busing and he was able to get his diploma without having to stay with someone in another town like his brothers and sisters.
After high school Mel entered the Army and spent two years in the service in Alaska. He then was a member of the Army Active Reserve for 24 years leaving as a Master Sergeant. Mel was very proud of his years in the Army and was a very patriotic man. The world was just a little safer for having him among their ranks.
After leaving the active service and during his years in the reserve, Mel worked in Milwaukee for American Motors (now part of the Chrysler Corporation). He worked there until retirement when he returned to his hometown of Lily.
Mel was very active in his community as he served as Fire Chief for many years before retiring from the department. He was a founding member of the Lily Snow-Birds and fundamental in the building of their clubhouse and spent many hours grooming trails.
Mel loved golfing with his buddies and nephews when possible. He especially enjoyed traveling. He was often known to pack a little bag and go for a ride and end up in Canada or Minnesota or just about anywhere. He just loved to drive and look around at the country. He enjoyed skiing when younger, a skill he developed while stationed in Alaska. He made trips to places like the Grand Tetons and such. Mel especially loved his morning coffee clutches with his gang at the Northwoods Diner in Pickerel. He greatly appreciated the hospitality and friendship of the owners Kelly and Perry Siebers and their lovely family.
Mel was a very much loved and special Uncle to many nieces and nephews. We cannot express how much this man meant to our families. Holidays weren’t complete until Mel showed up. He walked nieces down the aisle and was a substitute father to some. He was an extraordinary son who not only sent his military pay home to help his mother, but also came home every weekend to check on her and care for her until her move to a nursing home. If only everyone could have a son who loved like this. It cannot be put into words how much he was loved. That is why his family made it possible for him to stay in his own home until just a week before his passing.
Mel is survived by nieces Vicki (Jim) Lemerande, Chris (Mike) Geske, Penny (Jack) Carter, Donna (John) Pospichal. Nephews Joe Breaker, Paul Breaker Eugene Breaker, Mike Raminger, Jim Raminger, Jim (Jeanne) Whisman and many grand nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Gladys Raminger and Audrey Breaker Ratty. Brothers Fran Whisman, Clarence Whisman and Lonnie Whisman. Nephews Don Whisman and Edward Breaker. Nieces Evelyn Galleazzi, Marva Shaw and Nancy Wells.
The family would like to than The Bay at NuRoc for their kind and compassionate care, Dr. McKenna of the Langlade Aspirus and Weber-Hill & Packard Funeral Home for all of their help. Everything is greatly appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Weber-Hill & Packard Funeral Home in Crandon on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Services will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Pastor Don Dewing presiding. Interment will be at Town of Lily Cemetery, Langlade County,  where Military Honors will be conducted.
