A memorial celebration of life will be held at 1:00 PM, Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the First Christian Church in Independence with Pastor Mark Lyon officiating. Janice LaVerne Briggs was born June 26, 1936, In Independence to Otis Lavern and Mary Wavel (Cook) McCarney. She grew up in Independence and graduated from Independence High School in 1954, where she began playing piano and organ for the school choir. She continued playing at the Congregational Church and later the Community Church. In 1975, she became the organist at the First Christian Church and continued for 49 years until the end of April, 2024.
On April 17, 1953, Janice married Robert Allen Briggs at the Congregational Church and he survives at the home.
Janice worked for National Life in the Professional Building, years for Dr. Nickel and also with her husband at Farmer's Insurance. She was a member of PEO EF for 52 years, the Monday Music Club, Christian Women's Fellowship amongst others and active in her children's scouting and activities. She enjoyed crocheting and her retirement was devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors of Janice L. Briggs include; Her husband, Robert Briggs. Children, Douglas (Norma) Briggs, Claremore, OK, and Kristi Wilson, Independence, KS. Ten grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 2 1/2 great-great grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary Jo Borovetz, brother-in-law, Phillip Briggs and a granddaughter, Kara Wilson.

Delmer Ralph McCarty was born January 6, 1964, in Coffeyville, KS, to Virgil W. and Eloise Belle (Holmes) McCarty. He grew up in Independence and graduated from Independence High School in 1982. He moved to Sacramento, CA, for 10 years, working with a marble company and in retail. He moved back to Independence and on December 30, 1995, he married Linda Dodson, who survives at the home. He was a member of the Church of the Brethern. He worked in groceries and spent 18 years at Walmart. Most recently, he was employed at Spears Manufacturing. Delmer was active with his son in Boy Scouts.
Survivors of Delmer McCarty include:  His wife, Linda McCarty, of the home.  His son, Andrew McCarty, Independence, KS. Siblings, Eric McCarty and Sandra McCarty, both of Independence. Nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Bill Tiecke was born June 25, 1957, in Muscatine, IA, to Louis "Bud" and Dorothy Mae (Sheetz) Tiecke. He grew up and attended country schools in Muscatine before moving to Lafayette, CO. In 1977, he met and later married Margi Howard. She survives at the home. They moved to Ketchum, OK, and then Joplin, MO, before settling in Mound Valley, KS in 1998. He grew up in the Zion Lutheran Church and worked as a chef and later in industrial cleaning. He was an avid animal lover and loved music, cooking and his ten grandchildren. He lived, he tried, he died. TR.
Survivors of Bill Tiecke include: His wife, Margi Tiecke, of the home. Children, Justin Tiecke, Bryan (Tiffanie) Tiecke and Brandon Tiecke. Ten grandchildren, Eathan, Caydence, Madisyn, Alexia, Hunter, Kalynn, Patience, Rune, Kisa and Eralynn with a great-grandchild arriving soon. Siblings, Patricia Tiecke-Collins, George Bryan and Beth (Mike) Batenhorst. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud Tiecke and Dorothy Shanks, and a brother-in-law, Al Collins as well as his beloved dog, Star.

John A. Eaton, Jr., was born June 8, 1980, in Springville, NY, to John and Kimberly (Shisler) Eaton, Sr. He grew up in Franklinville, NY, and graduated from Ten Broek Academy in 1998. He married Melissa Neal in 2004. They lived in East Otto, NY, where John worked as a machinist in the auto industry. He moved to Independence in 2018 and began work as a Quality Technician at Standard Motor Products. He was an artist that enjoyed heavy metal music and a proud member of the Buffalo Bills mafia.
Survivors of John Allan Eaton, Jr. include: Children, Palmer Eaton, Jazmine Eaton and their mother, Melissa Neal Eaton, East Otto, NY. Parents, John and Kimberly Eaton, Sr., Lakeland, FL. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 13, 2024, at Webb Family Funeral Service, 1475 S. 10th, St, Independence, KS, with the family receiving friends at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
Ronald Ralph McGinnis was born August 2, 1934, in Excelsior Springs, MO, to Ralph and Rachel (Headlee) McGinnis. He grew up there and attended schools in Rayville, MO. Ronald first married Dorothy (Davis) Dunkerson and the family settled in Independence, KS. He later married Ethel Bowles, who preceded him in death. Ronald worked in oil and gas drilling and was member of several groups, including the Masonic Lodge. Ronald lived in Green Valley, AZ, before moving to Pittsburg. He enjoyed golfing in Colorado and Arizona with family and friends and loved traveling.
Survivors of Ronald McGinnis include: Children, Victoria McGinnis, Pittsburg, MO, and Susan Sottoriva, Kansas City, MO, Bruce (Gary) Bowles, Bartlesville, OK, and Lesli (David) Starr, Milliken, CO. Eleven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ethel, two daughters Cheryl McGinnis and Robin Thomas and a brother, Rudy McGinnis.

Kathryn J. Knowles was born April 30, 1962, in Oakland, CA, the daughter of Bruce Smith and Frances (Medinas) Smith. She was raised and went to school in the Fremont, CA, area. In 1981, in Vacaville, CA, she married Luke Knowles and he survives at the home. The family later lived in Redmond and Gilchrist, OR. She was involved in her children's 4-H club and was known as a cook at the Redmond Christian Church Bible Camp. She loved gardening, animals, horses and her grandchildren above all. Survivors of Kathryn Knowles include: Husband, Luke Knowles, of the home. Children, Haley (Zach) Calvert, Coffeyville, KS, and Ely Knowles, Jacksonville, FL. Joy Ann Lofton Barnett - July 09, 1981 - March 10, 2024

Joy Ann Lofton Barnett, 42, passed away at her home in Coffeyville, Kansas with her family at her side on Sunday, March 10, 2024 after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.
Joy was born July 9, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, to Troy Lofton, Sr., and the late Judy Ann Lofton. She attended Oak Forest Academy and went on to spend many dedicated years as an Editor at the Kentwood News-Ledger and the Amite Tangi Digest, the community newspapers, where she met her chosen family. Joy was a well-loved and respected member of the Amite and Kentwood communities. She dedicated her time as a member of both the Amite Oyster Festival Board of Directors and with the Amite Chamber of Commerce. After moving to Oklahoma and then Kansas to pursue new adventures, she worked in the Blue Moose – Coffeyville Refinery, where she gained many more friends and found her love, Travis.
Though she was involved in and well-known around the communities where she lived and worked, Joy was best known for her fighting spirit, fierce loyalty, deep love, and unwavering dedication to the family she was born into and the family she chose. Those she loved felt her warmth and her strength as if it were their own. She never hesitated to defend their honor, call them out, or stand beside them when they needed support.
She was a phenomenal, passionate writer and an avid reader. During her time with the newspaper, she won state awards for her detailed, emotional editorials and her informative journalism pieces. She loved fantasy stories, relating particularly to Tinker Bell. Her favorite lazy Sunday would be spent curled up with her favorite book, her favorite people, and her faithful dogs – Tonto, Laycee, Meg, Abby, and the late Munchkin, Buster and Ozzie.
There was not a place or person that had not been impacted by Joy. She has left a lasting legacy, filled with beautiful memories, and will be missed dearly by all who knew her and loved her.
Joy was loved in life by her devoted husband, Travis Barnett, and her stepchildren whom she loved as her own, Eliza and Damon; her older brother, Troy “TJ” Lofton, Jr.; her nephews and nieces, Triston and his wife Grace Lofton, Jase Lofton, Phoenix Lofton, Abigayle Forrest; grandmother, Sarah Wall Jones; father, Troy Lofton, Sr.; aunts, uncles, and cousins; and very special friends she met in all chapters of her life.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Judy Ann Lofton; great-grandmother, Ida Wall, grandpa, Robert E. Jones; papa and granny, Austin and Alice Lofton; uncles, Jimmy Jones and Wayne Lancaster; and aunt, Faye Lofton.

Linda Ann Hopkins - October 17, 1964 - February 20, 2024

Obituary Preview: Linda A. Hopkins, 59, passed away Tuesday, February 20, 2024 at her home in Burlington after a long and courageous fight with breast cancer.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Church of the Epiphany, Episcopal Church with inurnment at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas. Memorial contributions can be made to Lebo Activity Fund for a scholarship fund and sent to Zach Webb Family Funeral Service, 4069 CR 3900 (1475 S. 10th), Independence, KS 67301.
Linda was born October 17, 1964, in Independence, Kansas. Gary and LeeAnn (Turner) Tallman. Gary was later remarried to Norma Tallman who adopted, nurtured, supported and loved Linda. Their unique bond was stronger than most mother/daughter bonds and one that Linda cherished and honored. She lived most of her childhood in Independence, KS, and attended local schools. She graduated from Independence High School in 1983. She pursued her post-secondary education in teaching because of the love and influence of her beloved Grandma Turner and graduated with her Bachelo’s Degree from Pittsburg State University and her Masters Degree from Emporia State University. Her family was so proud of her determination and accomplishments.
She was a passionate teacher and advocate for her students, with a career spanned 27 years, most recently she taught Special Education for 6th through 12th grade at Lebo Schools for many years. She was also a teacher for international students online. She was loved by her students, their parents and her associates.
Linda was outgoing and fiercely loyal to family and friends. She loved to bowl, she was a huge sports fan and could often be seen cheering for the Chiefs, the Royals, University of Kansas. Her favorite sporting events of all were the ones she watched her grandchildren participate in. When it came to fantasy football nobody was more enthusiastic than she was. She was also creative and found many outlets to display her talents. Making decorated cakes for her children and later her grandchildren, sewing quilts for loved ones, coming up with fun Halloween costumes and a wide range of arts and crafts projects.
Linda was a member of the Lebo United Methodist Church and had been attending Radiant Life Church in New Strawn. She was also a member of the Kansas National Education Association.
She will be forever remembered by her husband, Mark Hopkins of Lebo; mother, Norma Tallman, two sons, Alex (Cayla) Madron of Parsons, Kansas and Zach (Chantell) Madron of Edna, Kansas; two step-sons, Matt (Amanda) Hopkins and Jamison Hopkins, both of Lebo; a sister, Christine (Dan) Repp of Cherryvale, Kansas; a brother, Bill Neary of Tampa, Florida; ten grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Eldine Engelmann was born May 12, 1932, in Shawnee Town, MO, to Eldor and Elda (Starzinger) Fiedler. She graduated form Cape Girardeau Business College and worked as a secretary with B&H / Brase, Inc. for 40 years until retirement. Eldine attended Trinity Lutheran Church and belonged to the Tuesday morning Bible study. Her favorite verse was Acts 4:12. She was a Jr. Ladies Auxilliary member, belonged to Prayer Shawl and was a Bereavement Team member.
In 1955, she married Charles J. Engelmann and they resided in Cape Girardeau, MO. Mr. Engelmann preceded her in death. Eldine resided with her son, Larry, and his wife in Independence for the last 3 years.
Survivors of Eldine Engelmann include: Her son, Larry (Donna) Engelmann, Independence, KS. Siblings, Melva (Glenn) Schaper, Florissant, MO, Laverne (Jerry) Fitzsimmons, Ste. Genevieve, MO, Ervin (Joyce) Fiedler, Tampa, FL. Sister-in-law, Peggy Fiedler, Springfield, MO. Two granddaughter, Elizabeth Swanwick, Jenks, OK, and Elisha (Derin) Dilbeck, Jenks, OK. Six great-grandchildren, ten nieces and nephews and numerous extended family.

Ramon Burnett was born March 9, 1984, in Coffeyville, KS, to Johnny LeRoy Ausler and Carmen LaRayne Burnett. He grew up in Coffeyville and attended local schools. He had worked in nursing homes, food venues and in home health. He was a welder specializing in automotive collision and repair. More recently, he was a breeder of french bulldogs. He had attended church at the First Church Family Worship Center.
On January 20, 2017, he married Vanessa Garcia in Coffeyville and she survives at the home.
Survivors in addition to the wife, Vanessa Burnett, include: Children, LaMarcus Allen, Independence, KS. Taveon Mayhew, Nowata, OK. Carmen Burnett, Stephanie Burnett, Tehya Burnett, Analicia Burnett and Ramon Burnett, Jr., all of Coffeyville, KS, and Kaeson Lewis, Independence, KS. His father, Johnny Ausler. A brother, B.J. Kendall, Coffeyville, KS, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his mother and two brothers, Clint and Antonio Burnett.

Sonya Muller was born December 15, 1942, in Coffeyville, KS, to John and Faith (Hunt) Mead. She grew up in the Peru and Niotaze area before the family moved to Independence. She graduated from Independence High School in 1960. She married David Good and they moved to California. They later divorced. She married Bryant Cook in Independence and she was a farmer's wife and homemaker for 16 years. In 1982, she married Marvin Muller in Independence. They were married 18 years and he passed away in 2003. Sonya also cleaned houses and worked at Four County for 10 years before retiring in 2014. She had attended the Cathedral of Praise in Independence. She loved flowers, gardening, dogs & cats and living in the country.
Survivors of Sonya Muller include: Three children, Susy (David Hensley) Whitson, Independence, KS. Millie (Robert) Martin, Independence, KS. Phillip (Jessica) Muller, Independence, KS. Nine grandchildren, Chris (Misty) Gruber, Steven Whitson, Kelly (Darian) Kelly, Jodie (Kylie) Whitson, Matthew Newman, Nichole Moses, Zachary Moses, Remington and Maverick Muller.  Four great-grandchildren, Brinlee, Harper, Daxton and Karson. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Phyllis McClenning.

Judy Hinthorn was born July 6, 1940, in Neodesha, KS, to Neil and Elizabeth (Showalter) Nuzman. She grew up in Neodesha and graduated from Neodesha High School in 1958. She married Max Hinthorn on September 30, 1962, and Mr. Hinthorn passed away in 2019. The family lived in the Independence and Elk City area. Judy had worked at ACC, Emerson, J.C. Penney's and for several other businesses. She especially enjoyed auctions, car shows and family events.
Survivors of Judy Hinthorn include: Her son, Mark (Sharon) Hinthorn, Independence, KS. Daughters, Dianna Lang, Independence, KS, and Deanna (Steve) Hyland, Louisburg, KS.  Six grandchildren, Jamie (Brandon) Buckley, Colin (Diane) Victory, Astrid (Will) Peters, John Hyland, Kyle Cheshier and Lance Chesier. Carolyn Sue Main was born October 1, 1944, in Independence, to Joe and Edith (Hinman) Main. Carolyn attended District 40 school in rural Independence and graduated from Independence High School in 1962. She attended Independence Community Junior College, Wichita State, Washburn University and St. Louis University, completing her post-graduate degree. She started her career as a therapist in social work in Winston-Salem, NC. She moved to Virginia Beach, VA, and was currently working at Windsor Oaks Elementary School and Kings Grant Elementary School as a counselor and on weekends at the Artist's Gallery in Virginia Beach. Previously she had worked at the Navy's Little Creek Amphibious Base. Carolyn was a member of the Arts Center and the Virginia Beach Shag Club.
Carolyn was very active and loved her art work, walking on the beach, talking to her friends on zoom, shopping with her sisters in Kansas, traveling with her girlfriends to Greece, Germany and Italy and here and there, shag dancing and camping with Dave. She also enjoyed roller skating in her younger days. Carolyn loved coming home to Kansas, painting with friends at the museum and catching up with her classmate, Donna Rothgeb. She always wanted to eat a steak and Mexican food while she was at home. Carolyn would often request her favorite song, "At Last", by Etta James, at Shag Club. She told her friends she finally found the right one in Dave.
Carolyn leaves behind the love of her life, Dave Coker, of Virginia. Three siblings, Denzel (Connie) Main, Chris Hare and Pam (Larry) McHugh. Nieces and nephews, Cindy (Jim) Hafenstine, Randy (Dana) Hare, Becky (David) Meek, Tracy Gordon, Jeanette (Scott) Calvert, Scott (Becky) Main, Joe (Melissa) Main, Sherman McHugh and Brian McHugh and many great-nieces and nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe Main and Edith (Austin) Laughlin. Sisters, Melba Ann Main and Charlotte (Main) Scott, and brother-in-law Jim Hare and sister-in-law Fayrean Lewman.

The family settled back in their hometown of Neodesha, KS, where Denise attended high school. She attended beauty college in Coffeyville and later worked in retail, at Cobalt and with Innovative Marketing Strategies. Denise enjoyed gardening, her fish, dogs and camping. She took pride in being the mother of five and grandmother to many.
On June 3, 1985, she married the love of her life, James Lour, II, and he survives at the home.
Survivors of Denise Lour in addition to her husband, James, include: Her children; Travis (Tawny) White, Neodesha, KS. Tracy White, Neodesha, KS. Trisha (Keith) Hadley, Topeka, KS. Troy White, Neodesha, KS, and Triesa White, Denver, NC. Seven siblings: Chuck Bomboy and Anne Caranta of Minnesota. Alan LaForte, Avant, OK. Mary Beth Arnold, Neodesha, KS. Teresa LaForte, Neodesha, KS. Kevin LaForte of Georgia. Phillip LaForte, Neodesha, KS, and Dennis LaForte, Neodesha, KS. Eleven grandchildren: Abigail, Sophia, Ryan, Shallen, Alexander, Isaak, Bayden, Riley, Emma, Anthony and Braylen. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Daniel Benjamin Turr was born August 11, 1938, in Sussex, New Jersey to Austrian immigrants Stephen and Mytle (Van Horn) Turr. He grew up in New Jersey and worked at Metaltech, where he was a machinist in the aircraft industry. He married Dorothy Ostaff and she passed away in 1997. In 1984, the family moved to Chatham, MA, on Cape Cod where Daniel worked in Real Estate and appraisals. In 1994, they moved to Tucson, AZ, where Daniel worked for Bombardier Business Jets. Daniel was very active in the Kiwanis Club on the east coast. In 2000, he married Sandra Mason in Tucson, AZ, and she survives at the home.
Survivors in addition to his wife, Sandra Turr, of the home include: Two children, Karen Lucey, South Yarmouth, MA and Stephen Turr, Lititz, PA. One sister, Linda Turr of New Jersey. Six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson, Bryan Manness and siblings, Lynn, Stephen and Victor Turr.

She also lived in Coffeyville, Indiana and Florida before returning to the area. She married Gerald Burrell and they later divorced. She was engaged to Lucas Grover and he passed away in 2010. She had attended the First Assembly of God in Coffeyville. She was the best granny in the world and loved everybody.
Survivors of Mashon Ayers include: Children, Brittany Burrell, Coffeyville, KS, Zachary and Kayla Battle, Pittsburg, KS, and Stephanie Fancher, Coffeyville, KS. Jason enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery and football.

Rob and his wife Kathy moved to Independence in August of last year, seeking a more peaceful life in the country, which they certainly found. Rob instantly in love with the area and told his wife he’d be happy never leaving the state. Rob was a master carpenter, and thoroughly loved the process of building, working in construction for over 40 years. He was recently employed Koehn with Construction in Fredonia, where he was just beginning to enjoy new friends and the camaraderie he shared with them. He felt he had found a new family at Koehn and was excited to start his projects.
Rob leaves behind his wife Kathy, his children Jessica, Robert, Anna, stepchildren David (Amy) and Alisha (Jeremy). Grandchildren, Logan, Haley, Natalie, Robert, Katie, JJ, Bea, Sam, new great grandson Damien and mother Patti Boll.
Rob had a tremendous love for the Lord, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A memorial service for Rob will be held October 14, 2pm at First Baptist Church, 220 S. Pennsylvania Avenue in Independence.

On December 12, 1964, she married Louie Oliver and they later divorced. She was a member of the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary, Congress of Parents and Teachers, various bowling leagues and was active in VVARC and things involving her children. She loved her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She spoiled her cat, Missy and enjoyed doing word searches and playing Farkle.
Survivors of Carolyn Oliver include: Her children, Dean (Pam) Oliver, Jeff Oliver and Lisa Shultz (Shawn Willis). Grandchildren, Dustin (Becca), Chelsea (Randy), Colin, Ian and Tannar.
