A funeral service to honor and celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 29, 2024 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main St., Perry, MI 48872. Pastor Tim Harmon will officiate. The family will receive friends from 3-6:00 PM on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at the funeral home as well as one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Born on July 20, 1943, at home in Perry, Michigan, to Clarence and Alma (Wiggins) Warfle, Dennis’ journey through life was one marked by dedication and an enormous love for family and nature. Dennis attended Perry High School with the class of 1961 and he carried the spirit of his hometown with him throughout his life.
Dennis’ professional path was intertwined with General Motors, where he was treasured by his colleagues for his diverse expertise. However, it was his role in “the crib” – the nexus of all things tools – that he cherished most. His colleagues knew him as the go-to man for any specialized mechanical work.
On October 8, 1966, Dennis married Kathleen Louise Cole in a ceremony in Morrice that sparked 57 years of unwavering companionship filled with laughter and love. Together, they created a family legacy that includes their children, Kimberly (Patrick) Delaney, Timmothy Warfle, and Shellie Warfle; their grandchildren, Joshua (Kelsey) Delaney, Miranda Delaney, Logan Warfle, Jared Warfle, and Samantha Cooke; and their great-grandchild, Caden Delaney who he adored. His life was further enriched by many numerous nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
Dennis’ commitment to his country was evident as he served in the National Guard and was called to duty during the Detroit Riots in 1967. This experience was a testament to his sense of responsibility and his willingness to help others.
A man of many interests, Dennis was particularly known for his exceptional mechanical abilities. His hands were his instruments, and he was always ready to give a helping hand. Whether it was the roar of a car engine or the hum of a tractor, Dennis was there, ready to lend his expertise. His passion for drag racing was only matched by his love for working on International Tractors – always favoring the red over the green.
Dennis also found solace in his quiet times, fishing, hunting, and enjoying nature. Dennis’ life was characterized by the love he shared and the passion he poured into every endeavor. He was a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather and a handy craftsman with a compassionate soul. His presence was a source of strength and joy for all who knew him.
His passing was preceded by his devoted parents, ten of his siblings, and several nieces and nephews, along with his loyal labrador retriever, Chloe, who was his constant companion through many seasons of life.
The family wishes to thank Residential Hospice for their guidance and compassionate care of Dennis. It is only fitting that memorials, in lieu of flowers, are made payable to Residential Hospice or to the Perry Food Bank, 203 W. Polly St., 3 rd Floor, Perry, MI 48872.

Mike was the beloved son of Charles Edward and Marjorie Jean (Rogers) Hayes, Jr. He grew up in a loving family and attended Perry Public Schools. He was honorably discharged in 1969, carrying the pride of his service throughout his life.
For 35 years, Mike was a familiar and friendly face as a UPS driver, a role he thoroughly enjoyed. His daily rounds were more than a job; they were an opportunity to connect with the community, share a joke, and brighten the days of those he served. His dedication to his work was surpassed only by the love he had for the people he met along the way. William Hart-Davidson - July 02, 1970 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Perry)
Obituary Preview: Bill Hart-Davidson died suddenly on April 23, 2024 of a heart attack while on a regular run. He was 53 years old. He was an excellent human who lived by the philosophy of “Give. When in doubt, give more.”
Bill accomplished so much as a scholar, teacher, and administrator. While studying at Bowling Green State University, he joined Lambda Chi Alpha, where he was the High Phi (the ritualist), responsible for bringing people into the fold, and he made lifelong friends with his fraternity brothers. He completed his Ph.D in Rhetoric & Composition from Purdue University in 1999 where, as a graduate student, he was one of the first people to advocate for computers in writing classrooms. He spent most of his career at Michigan State University. As a scholar, Bill gave the world new knowledge that was influential in multiple disciplines including emerging academic conversations on generative artificial intelligence. He produced two books and more than 100 publications that have been cited more than 1700 times. As a collaborator, he always insisted on being cited after junior scholars and graduate students in the interest of promoting them and highlighting their scholarship. He was highly decorated for his research, including being made a Fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing in 2016 and receiving the MSU William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award in 2023. Bill is also one of the rare writing scholars with patents on his resume and who built software. He co-founded the company Eli Review dedicated to helping writers of any discipline practice to be better writers.
Bill loved being a teacher and a mentor. He leaves behind generations of students that have themselves become brilliant scholars, software engineers, technical writers, and on and on. He helped thousands of young people realize their dreams and their potential. Bill valued inclusivity, making everyone feel seen and supported by deeply listening and offering advice and good cheer as they worked toward their personal and professional goals. He gave his students the tools to be successful, and continued to support them as they applied for their first jobs and navigated their careers. Bill especially loved when his students went on to become his colleagues and his peers.
Bill found new opportunities to support students and his colleagues as Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education in the College Arts & Letters. He distinguished himself as a passionate and compassionate leader who always looked for ways to give back to the people that make up his institution. He made entire programs better by making sure their people had the resources they needed to succeed. He mentored and supported faculty through times of crisis and at crucial moments in their careers. He celebrated students and faculty alike, championing their research and their accomplishments.
Bill was a curious person, pursuing the practice of new crafts and skills throughout his life. Practice was an important idea to Bill not only in his scholarship but also his hobbies. He was a cyclist, a bass player, a musician, a generational baker, a professionally trained juggler, a photographer, and a frolfer (frisbee golfer). He was not afraid to get down on his belly to get the perfect photograph of his daughter’s Lillian’s antics. He spent hours practicing the perfect scone or chocolate chip cookie recipe and loved sharing his bakes with family, friends, colleagues, and strangers. He was brilliantly funny, able to drop the perfect pun or groan-worthy dad joke with targeted precision. He shared his passion for music by playing bass with the Community Music School jazz band, the Lansing Redeemer Church band (that he and Leslie affectionately called his weekly “Jesus Jazz” gig) along with his Blue Jazz Working Group. In 2021 he and his colleagues released an EP titled “The Callback.” He loved bicycling for a good cause, and through his joy of cycling Bill raised tens of thousands of dollars for Tour De Cure and Ride2CW. In everything Bill did, he gave.
Of all his passions, Bill loved his family the most. He was endlessly proud of his wife, Leslie, and their adopted daughter, Lilian. He loved cooking for them, biking with them, and telling stories of the things they accomplished and the adventures they had together. Bill and Les began as teenagers, riding their bikes to Dairy Queen on their first date, and one of their happiest days was bringing their daughter home for the first time. Of all the things he practiced, and all the things he gave, the most important of those things was unconditional love. Every day was a choice to be together, from their first day together to their last.
Bill gave so much, and Bill was very loved in return. He was a cherished father, husband, son, brother, colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend. His memory will live on in the brilliant scholarship he published, the generations of students he helped, and the friends and family who will cherish and draw strength from his memory.
He is survived by his wife and his daughter, his mother Donna Smith, his stepfather Rick Smith, his stepmother Patti Davidson, his brother Sean (Amy) Davidson, and niece Desarae. He is preceded in death by his father, Frederick Davidson, and brother-in-law Greg Hart, mother-in-law Mary Hart, and father-in-law Jim Hart.
Addendum: The funeral director unknowingly suggested to a room full of professional writers to try using ChatGPT to write an obituary for Bill, which they then did. The results were predictably bad, and, if Bill were still alive, the irony of this would cause him to drop dead again anyway. Donations: In honor of Bill’s memory, a scholarship has been established, further cementing his enduring impact on the academic community. His work significantly enhanced faculty research and graduate education, fostering an environment rich in growth and collaboration. Contributions to the William Hart-Davidson Endowed Scholarship can be made by visiting http://go.cal.msu.edu/BHD

Annette Elizabeth Newman - August 12, 1954 - March 27, 2024

Departed: 03/27/2024 (Perry)
Obituary Preview: Annette Elizabeth Newman, a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2024, at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing with her family at her side. A funeral service to honor and celebrate her life will be held at 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main St., Perry, MI 48872. Msrg. George C. Michalek will celebrate. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 until the time of service.
Born on August 12, 1954, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, she was the cherished daughter of John and Marian (Dettling) Towsley, who lovingly chose her from the very beginning. Annette's life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and kindness.
Annette's journey through life was one of joy and purpose. On June 22, 1973, she married the love of her life, Mr. William A. Newman, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Morrice. Their union was a profound source of happiness, and together they welcomed two wonderful children into the world, Stacy and Matthew. Annette's role as a wife and mother was one she embraced with every fiber of her being, and her family grew to include her adoring grandchildren, Alex, Emily (Devin), and Tyler (Kadin), as well as her treasured great-grandchildren, Avery, Liam, James, and Benjamin.
Annette's siblings who she reunited with—Kevin, Maria, Theresa, Mark, Matthew, Christine, and Cecila—were an integral part of her life's tapestry. The bonds she shared with them were a source of strength and comfort, and their reunion is a moment of joy amidst the sorrow of her passing. She now also joins her beloved parents, with whom raised her to be the amazing woman we know call family.
Professionally, Annette was a woman of remarkable talent and compassion. After graduating from Craig's School of Beauty in Lansing, she became a licensed beautician in 1973. Annette's work was more than a career; it was a calling. She dedicated herself to creating wigs for women and toupees for men, helping those who had lost their hair due to illness or treatment. Her ability to restore self-esteem and provide comfort to her clients was a gift she gave generously and with her whole heart.
Annette's passion for music began in her childhood, with piano lessons taken before her feet could even touch the pedals. This love of music was a constant thread throughout her life, bringing joy to her and those around her. But above all, her greatest passion was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
