Monica M. Dewey - June 28, 1957 - April 25, 2024

Departed: 04/25/2024 (Mendota)
Obituary Preview: April 25, 2024, Monica Marie Dewey (nee Blackburn) died of cancer surrounded by family at the age of sixty-six. Visitation will take place on May 1 from 4-7pm with a rosary at 4pm in Wasmer Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be May 2 at 10:30am in Holy Cross Catholic Church. Rev. Jeff Windy will officiate and burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Wasmer Funeral Home is privileged to assist the family.
Monica was born June 28, 1957, in Dixon, Illinois to Edwin Blackburn and Rita Blackburn (nee Lauer). Monica was the oldest of four children. Sadly, Monica’s father died when Monica was only eleven. Monica was bright, bubbly, beautiful and a blast to be with. Monica grew up in Amboy and Compton with her mother, Stepfather Val Fischbach, and siblings Randy, and Barb. Monica’s childhood home was full of love and good-hearted mischief. In 1975, Monica married her high school sweetheart Rich Dewey, and they were looking forward to celebrating 50 years of marriage in 2025. Throughout the years, and until the end, Monica and Rich remained as loving, laughing, teasing, and joking as when they were newlyweds in 1975. Monica was a fun young mother in Amboy. The family later moved to Mendota in 1978. For years Monica and the Dewey’s lived near the edge of Mendota on the former site of Vic & Thelma’s motel. One of the buildings was dubbed “Pair-a-dice” and was the site of many happy parties for family and friends with a generous open-door policy. Rich and Monica moved to their new home in 2008 and the open-door policy for friends and gatherings continued on East 1st Road, enhanced by the sweeping West views and sunsets over the fields. Monica was a smart hard worker and brought a sense of fun to work. Monica had a lengthy career notably working for Pella in Mendota for twenty-seven years. Monica then moved to Holland & Sons in 2012 bringing her diligence to the office along with her good-natured personality. Monica made many friends along the way. Monica was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Auntie and Great Auntie hosting parties, with endless food and importantly fun on the lawn, including kites, golf cart rides, fireworks, and a bouncy house to name but a few of the attractions. Monica also hosted the annual Christmas party for family and grandchildren again with an abundance of food, Christmas decorations and the fabled “find the pickle ornament” prize for the kids. In the last few years, Monica and Rich added their cabin on Rock River to the list of locations for family and friends’ celebrations with boating, jet skis, fishing, and barbecues. For Monica, the cabin was an especially special and sentimental place being close to the site of her family farm where she was a baby and young girl with her father. Monica was preceded in death by her parents, brother Mark who died in 1968, tragically she was preceded in death by her dear son Corey who died at the age of thirty and nephew Randy Blackburn Jr. who died at the age of twenty-one. Monica is survived by her husband Rich Dewey of Mendota; daughter Annette (Greg) Cyrocki of Lamoille; brother Randy (Ann-Keve) Blackburn of Colorado Springs; sister Barbara (Stephen) Weber of Mendota; stepfather Val Fischbach; daughter-in-law Heather Dewey; grandchildren: Ashton, Logan, and Meghan Dewey, Ellyn Schmidt, Anna and Blake Cyrocki; sister-in-law Sandra Draper; brothers-in-law: Brian Dewey (Michael Tighe), Brett Dewey (Sheila); nephews: Mark (Danielle) Blackburn, Erik (Jessica) Weber, Evan (Anna) Weber, Jonathan Draper, Matthew (Katie) Draper, Josh (Bree) Shepard; nieces: Keri (Anthony) Weber, Ashley Shepard, Chelsea (Anthony Hartman) White. Monica will always be remembered for her beauty, generosity, love, infectious laugh, great sense of humor and her appreciation of the ridiculous.
Pallbearers will be Mark Blackburn, Greg Cyrocki, Jon Draper, Matt Draper, Erik Weber and Evan Weber. Memorials may be directed to the family to establish a memorial in Monica's name. Condolences may be left at wasmerfuneralhome.com.
