Obituary Preview: Mrs. Merle Gunter, age 91, of the Mossy Grove community, passed away Monday, May 25, 2020, at the home of her daughter. Merle was born in Jonesville, VA to John and Jesse Coffman. She married Elwood Gunter of Lancing, and together they owned and operated Gunters Grocery in the Petros community for many years. Merle was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wartburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Elwood Gunter.
Her parents, John and Jesse Coffman.
And three brothers: Ben, Roscoe, and Chester Coffman.
She is survived by her daughter: Linda Gail Bowling of Rockwood.
Her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Nita Gunter of Mossy Grove.
Two sisters: Dorothy Englelauf of Eatonton, Georgia and Brenda Ashburn of Staunton, Illinois.
Three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Family and friends will meet Thursday morning, May 28, 2020 at 11:00 AM in the Wartburg City Cemetery for graveside services with Bro. Roy Langley officiating. Friends may come by the funeral home Wednesday May 27, 2020 from 11:00 AM to 4:00 to sign the register book.

Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and also taught Sunday School for many years. He retired from the United States Air Force after more than 20 years of service. Buddy also retired from the Tennessee Department of Corrections after more than 20 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years: Vivian Haynes Gooch.

Grandson: Jonathan “Dougie” Gooch.
His parents: Earl and Ruby Gooch.

Obituary Preview: Mrs. Betty Landrum Sexton, age 98 of the Pilot Mountain Community went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 30, 2019. She was a member of Pilot Mountain Missionary Baptist Church. Betty was a strong willed woman who loved the Lord and her family. She was saved at a very young age and spent her life serving God. She read the bible completely through many times and could quote many scriptures, by chapter and verse. She married Ira Sexton on December 6, 1941. She stood beside her husband as he preached God’s Word and pastored churches and raised their family. Together they laid a solid foundation on which her family stands to this day. Betty was one of a family of 12
children born to Lewis S. Landrum and Leany Griffith Landrum.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Rev. Ira Sexton.
One daughter: Wilda Jean Parks.
Her parents: Lewis S. Landrum and Leany Landrum.
Five brothers: Anderson Landrum, Joe Landrum, Louis Landrum, Noah Landrum, Love Landrum.

His feisty and untamed spirit knew no bounds to the love and kindness he showed to his family and friends. As a quick-witted entrepreneur, never thinking inside the box, John was a jack of all trades and a master of trees. John was always willing to spread his knowledge of making a quick buck, especially when it came to playing cards. A risk taker from a young age, John lived a life of unbelievable stories, memories and experiences. Anyone who knew John was touched greatly by the man he was. He is loved.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Bart and Edna Sexton.
One brother: Ralph Sexton.
And one daughter: Brittany Orton.
He is survived by his wife: Rene’ Mitchell-Sexton.
His children: Tammy Sexton, Missie Smith, John Paul Sexton, Leann Capps, Brian Orton, Elijah Mitchell, Sarah Mitchell and Erin Mitchell.
Three brothers: Billy Joe, Tom and Tim Sexton.

Obituary Preview: Mr. Tim T. Sexton, age 72 of Wartburg, passed away Saturday July 27, 2019 at his home. He was born on June 29, 1947 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to the late Tim T. and Pauline Leatherwood Sexton. He was of the Baptist faith.
Tim began his military career in the Army in 1966. He attended basic training at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina before he was sent to Ft. Rucker, Alabama where he was trained as an aircraft mechanic. Upon completion of his training, Tim was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina were he worked as an aircraft mechanic and crew chief. In 1968 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Specialist 5. Tim retired as a Captain from the Morgan County Regional Corrections Complex after 25 years of service.
Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sister: Maureen Sexton Gormas.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Loma Brown Sexton.
Two sons: Shawn and Samantha Sexton of Coalfield, Shane Sexton of Richmond Hill, Georgia and his friend Taylor Bufkin of Port Royal, South Carolina.
Six grandchildren: Ayita, Aspen, and Sullivan of Coalfield, Tanner Sexton and friend Courtney Laymance of Wartburg, Gabrielle and Cameron of Richmond Hill, GA.
Soon to arrive great grandson: Grayson.
His sister: Barbara Hawn of Wartburg.
