Julie Elizabeth McKendree - October 29, 1974 - October 02, 2021

Departed: 10/02/2021 (Dawson)
Obituary Preview: Julie Elizabeth Burke McKendree, age 46, of Dawson, Georgia, passed away on October 2, 2021 after an excruciating, nearly lifelong battle with Type 1 (childhood) diabetes. A memorial service at Mount Hebron Baptist Church will be held at a later date. Julie was born on October 29, 1974, in Cuthbert, Georgia. She was the daughter of R.B. Burke and Kitty Clyde Bass (Burke) Lofton, both of whom preceded her in death this year. Julie was the youngest granddaughter of E. Ralph Bass, Sr. & Pauline Baldwin Bass and William Thomas Burke & Jessie Trippe Burke – the baby on both sides of her family. She is survived by her husband, Bill McKendree; her older sister, Veronica Burke Humphrey (Michael) of Leaf, Georgia; adopted sister Jessica Anderson of Dawson, Georgia; and stepfather Shorty Lofton of Bronwood, Georgia. She helped with the raising of Bill’s children, whom she raised as her own children: Billy McKendree, Samantha Wigglesworth, and Kayla Blair. She is also survived by her grandchildren whom she cherished, her grandson, Nathan, who called her “Mae.”; granddaughters, Gabby, Skyler, Emily, and Paisley. Julie cherished her grandchildren and always said, “I never loved another person like that in my entire life.”
Julie was a beautiful, open-hearted human being with a love of life. Like her mother, she was a talkative extrovert who loved people and parties. She enjoyed fishing, crafting, baking, and decorating. She had an eye for color and was fearless in her creative endeavors. Additionally, Julie maintained expert level thrifting status. From an early age, she loved playing with cash registers, and owning her own thrift store was an unrealized dream. Like her sister, she had a penchant for rescuing animals; her little dog “Keeps” was most special to her heart.
Julie was part of the Randolph Southern School family. In her twenties, she dabbled in welding, sales, and floristry, but primarily made her living as a waitress and bartender in Albany, Macon, and Norcross. A remarkable childhood portrait of her by Larry Patrick of Heritage Photography was prominently displayed at Carr’s Steakhouse in Albany for years before, during, and after her work there. Her “Purple House” on Lee Street in Dawson was a favorite of photographer Brian Brown (vanishingsouthgeorgia.com). Mr. Brown also featured the folk Victorian in Shellman where Julie spent her adolescence.
Her special light shines on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Kitty Lofton - September 01, 1942 - June 08, 2021

Departed: 06/08/2021 (Dawson)
Obituary Preview: Kitty Clyde Bass Lofton, 78, of Bronwood, Georgia, passed away on June 8, 2021, following an extended health struggle with COVID-19. The family asks anyone who knew and loved Kitty to join them for her celebration of life, which will be held at Mount Hebron Baptist Church at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 19th. Mount Hebron is located at 1132 GA Hwy 216, Cuthbert, Georgia 39840. Over five generations of her family are buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
“Miss Kitty” was born on September 1, 1942, in Cuthbert, Georgia. She was the middle child and only daughter of Ennis Ralph Bass, Sr. and Susie Pauline Baldwin Bass. During childhood, Kitty often walked back and forth between her grandmothers’ homes, enjoying goodies from each. Her grandmothers – Kathe (Kitty) Clyde Hilliard Baldwin and Leola Clyde Ragan Bass – were her namesakes as well as nurturers of little Kitty’s sweet tooth. She enjoyed watching them prepare all manner of deliciousness with their wood stoves. We have them to thank for Mama’s exquisite chocolate meringue pie, lemon meringue pie, lemon cheese cake, caramel cake, and divinity, as well as her propensity for perfectly fried anything.
Kitty was a graduate of Cuthbert High School, Georgia Business School in Valdosta, Andrew College, and Georgia Southwestern College. She taught piano, spent a year teaching 2nd grade, and ran her own accounting business before finding her true calling as a social worker with Terrell County’s Department of Family and Children Services (DFCS). She was always happiest when helping others. After retirement, she cared for her elderly parents, enabling them to stay in the home they built and shared for nearly 70 years.
Kitty was an active church member all of her life. She loved Jesus, children, and old folks. She also loved parties, especially garden parties. She was known for her beautiful flowers, sunny attitude, fierce determination, piercing blue eyes, and – above all – her kindness to others. She loved talking to everyone and made friends everywhere she went, always seeing the good in people. She was a faithful blood donor who continued to give well after her “100th Donation” mark. She liked being in charge, ate cake for breakfast, and believed that Alka-Seltzer was the best cure for anything.
Kitty found special happiness late in life when she married Franklin “Shorty” Lofton, and through this marriage, she gained a precious niece, Jessica Anderson. Kitty was previously married to R.B. Burke for 30 years, and together they raised two daughters, Veronica and Julie. Veronica and husband Michael Humphrey live in Leaf, Georgia. Julie and husband Bill McKendree live in Dawson, Georgia.
Kitty dearly loved her brothers, E. Ralph Bass, Jr. (Leila) of Forsyth, Georgia and Jimmy (Carol) Bass of Roanoke, Alabama. She was sweet “Aunt Kitty” to niece Paquita Bass (Michael Plunkett, Susie, Rose) of Dedham, Massachusetts; nephew Russell Bass (Kayla & Hunter) of Epping, North Dakota; and niece Brandy Floyd (Chad, Parker, Lily) of Newnan, Georgia. Additionally, friend Anthony Johnson was special to her heart.
Miss Kitty touched many lives with her loving, generous spirit. The family asks that any memorial gifts be made to the Mount Hebron Church Cemetery Fund or Rehoboth Ranch Ministries at www.hopeatrehoboth.com/PO Box 208, Morgan GA 39866.
