Joseph Peña Mancha - March 19, 1947 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Peña Mancha (Papa Joe) passed away the evening of Thursday, April 4th, 2024 surrounded by his family. His wife of 35 years, Virginia (Ginni), passed less than 3 years prior. We are comforted knowing that they are together again and no longer suffering from afflictions.
Joe was born in Las Cruces, NM on March 19th, 1947. The 9th of 10 children, he was born to his parents Felix and Epifania on St. Joseph’s Day. He attended Las Cruces High until his senior year, but graduated from night school at Mayfield High a few years after he completed his service time in the United States Marine Corps.
Corporal Joseph was proud of his time in the Marines and honored to serve his country in Vietnam. Although he seldom shared stories about his service time, he was especially fond of the time he spent in Okinawa, Japan.
In 1978 Joe began his 25-year career at Bottomley Distributing Co. in Milpitas, CA. He was hard-working, handsome, and met his wife Ginni while delivering beer to a bar that she tended. Through his work, he was able to meet many people, some of which became longtime friends. He shared his free beer with many, which was one of his benefits, in addition to great company picnics. His Budweiser pride is reflected in his collection of unique beer steins.
Joe had two children with his ex-wife Maria, who predeceased him by only one month. He was beyond proud of his sons Martin Jose and Vicente. His oldest son, Martin, passed in 2008. While he had many happy memories that made him smile, Papa’s heartache was enduring.
When Joe met Ginni in 1980, he gained four older children, three of which he helped raise into adulthood. Joe and Ginni did not use the term “step” and they raised all of their children as their own. The Langdon Ct. house in San Jose was loud and fun and always full. Papa’s nephews would often come over on Saturday mornings for his famous omelettes and there was usually a spare cousin or kid that had spent the night. Joe and Ginni loved a good Halloween or birthday party, but the family favorite was their backyard dance parties.
In the early 90’s, Joe and Ginni moved their family to Modesto and bought their first home. When Joe accepted his company’s early retirement plan in 2002, they moved to their retirement home in the Cold Springs area on the outskirts of Reno. While they didn’t enjoy being cold, they loved the beauty of a fresh snowfall. They also appreciated being closer to Papa’s sister and brother, as well as their youngest daughter.
Joe and Ginni bowled on a league together for many years. They also camped, fished, and traveled to their grandchildren’s sports and school events. Joe was a talented wood worker and prior to his passing, he was in the process of building a cabinet for his sister Isabel. He enjoyed family time, especially a good card or dice game. He loved watching Westerns, listening to Classic Country, watching game shows, and roasting his own New Mexico chili. For the last few years, he truly loved watching his Rallo grandsons as they raced their mini stock cars. Even if, at times, it meant driving all the way out to Susanville in unsettled weather, as he was determined to cheer them on from the stands.
We are grateful that Papa knew his way around a smart phone. He kept in regular contact with his family through phone calls, video chats, and text messages. He often sent us prayers and pretty pictures. He wasn’t typically emotional, but he easily and often told his children that he loved them. We are grateful for his love and the sacrifices he made for his family.
Joe was predeceased by his parents, siblings Florencia (Lencha), Felix Jr., and son Martin. He is survived by his siblings Cristina, Mary, Isabel, Porfirio, Margaret, Frank, and Teresa, as well as his sister-in-law, Beverly. Additionally, his children Tara Tarvin (Rel) of La Plata, MD, Frank Giamona Jr. of Reno, NV, Raschell Bouldt (Richard) of Roseville, CA, Brenda Rallo (Vince) of Fernley, NV, and Vicente Mancha of Stockton, CA; seven grandchildren and three great grandsons.
Arrangements by Walton’s Ross, Burke & Knobel; visitation on Monday, April 22nd beginning at 2:00 p.m. (rosary at 2:30 p.m.) at Walton’s 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno. Funeral Mass on Tuesday, April 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Michael Church 14075 Mt. Vida St. Burial to follow at 1:00 p.m. at Northern Nevada Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Fernley. Please consider sending any memorial gifts in Joe’s honor to Saint Michael Church.

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Reno)

Luther was born in Sunflower, Mississippi on May 7, 1939 to Frances and Luther Mack Sr. Shortly after his birth, the family moved from Sunflower, Mississippi to Hawthorne, NV, where he, his parents, and older sister would live for their childhood years.
Shortly after moving to Reno, the family welcomed a younger brother. Luther graduated Reno High School and joined the Marines to serve his country. In addition to serving his country, that passion continued in serving his community, where he would go on to develop young entrepreneurs. After serving in the Marine Corps, Luther moved back to Reno, started Mack’s Janitorial Service, and worked at the then popular Gray Reid’s Department store.
Luther Mack Jr. had bigger and better aspirations. Luther became a statewide labor relations specialist appointed by the late Governor and close friend Paul Laxalt. In addition, he became one of the first black auxiliary police officers to proudly serve in Northern Nevada. He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Nevada Reno in 1998 for his active involvement in the community and his contributions to the university. Luther also hosted Dr. William H. Cosby as a fundraiser for the university, which exceeded all financial expectations, breaking all records at that time.
As a great man of faith, he continued to serve his community in a number of ways including: serving as a board member for the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority, the Nevada State Athletic Commission for 14 years, Boyd Gaming, President of the UNR Foundation, Wells Fargo Board, and Pioneer Citizen Board. Sandra Lynn Granstrom - January 16, 1948 - February 21, 2024

Departed: 02/21/2024 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Sandra Granstrom, age 76, died peacefully in her sleep and was welcomed into the loving arms of her savior Jesus Christ in the evening of Wednesday, February 21, 2024 in Sparks, Nevada where she was being cared for in a group home in hospice. Her immediate and extended family spent the day in loving communion with her physically and by telephone.
Sandra was born on January 16, 1948 to Donna (Henneman) Carmical and Henry “Hoagie” Carmical. Her mother passed away suddenly, from chicken pox when she was only four. Sandra, her sister Glenna Gentile, and her cousins, Connie Volling and Phil Thurston were raised in Le Sueur, Minnesota by her Aunt and Uncle – Faye and Wes King, from the time she was four through her graduation from Le Sueur High School – Class of 1966. For college, she moved to Chicago to attend North Park College and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in May, 1971. In August 1971 she passed her Nursing Boards and became a Registered Nurse. Becoming an RN was an important milestone, since it opened up the opportunity to minister to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people. This was always a major motivation for her, which she expanded on throughout her professional and personal life. In February, 1973, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing degree in Maternal and Child Health at Loyola University in Chicago, and she has always deeply loved working with babies and their moms. Thus it was natural that she began her working career as a Labor and Delivery Nurse at George Washington University Hospital in Washington DC. It was a surprise to her, but not to anyone else, when she quickly became Head Nurse of Labor and Delivery. While in DC, on December 3, 1973, she had the joy of giving birth to her first child, Paul Granstrom. The joke among many of her nursing colleagues was that she was “showing us how it’s done.” Her future life demonstrated that she was in fact an outstanding teacher in all her many professional roles. One student wrote on her end-of-semester evaluation that “Dr. Granstrom can make dirt interesting.”
Sandra moved to Chicago to continue her nursing career and theological education. On September 28, 1981 she was awarded her Doctor of Ministry degree from Chicago Theological Seminary, as she sought to understand better human suffering, death and grief, in order to minister more effectively to others, and to herself as well. With a desire to expand her knowledge and training in nursing, she then enrolled as a student in Rush University in Chicago. Soon she was invited by the Dean of the School of Nursing to begin teaching nursing classes, even as she continued as a student herself. On June 13, 1987 she was awarded the Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Rush University. During this time, on October 11, 1984, she had the joy of giving birth to her second son, Pierce Granstrom, at Rush University Hospital, again showing her nursing colleagues “how it’s done” --Always the teacher.
Sandra also used her skills and interests in many other contexts beside the hospital, always looking for opportunities to serve and help others. In Chicago she was Nursing Instructor at North Park College (1974-1975) and Assistant Campus Minister and Assistant Professor at St. Xavier College (1976-1979). She served as Clinical Case Manager, Hospice of the Monterrey Peninsula in California (1985-1987) . She was Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of San Francisco (1987-1989) and at Mankato State University in Minnesota (1990 – 1991), and Professor of Nursing at Bethel College in Minnesota (1992 – 2001).
In addition, she conducted more than 100 workshops and presentations at local, state and national levels on topics including death and dying, caring for dying patients and their families, spiritual well-being, integration of nursing care with spiritual care, care of the distressed spirit, suffering, ethics, spiritual and moral development, and critical thinking.
In 2001, Sandra changed her professional role to Clinical Research Management, traveling throughout the country until 2016, working on new drug trials for many different drug companies, and on new device trials for medical device companies. Evaluating safety and effectiveness of the new drugs or devices was yet another way she worked to help the needy and suffering. Even In this research context, she found opportunities to minister to and help her colleagues.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 30 years, Steven McNeel, PhD; her sons Paul Granstrom (Jennifer Granstrom) and Pierce Granstrom (Kristy Granstrom); her stepdaughters Brenna Lindquist (Michael Lindquist) and Alana Miksic (Paul Miksic); her grandchildren - Alison Granstrom, Matthew Granstrom, Makinsey Granstrom, Ethan Granstrom and Piercen Granstrom; and her step grandchildren, Vaughn Lindquist and Alexis Lindquist. She is also survived by Glenna Gentile, sister; Faye King, aunt; and cousins Connie Volling (James Volling), and Phil Thurston (Sue Thurston).
Sandra’s memory will always remain in the lives she has touched and the people she has helped. May they find comfort in the loving memories they share.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 16th at Walton’s Funeral Home (www.waltonsfuneralhomes.com), beginning at 11 AM at 2155 Kietzke Lane, Reno, NV 89502. After the service, family will gather at the home of her son Paul Granstrom for a Celebration of her Life. Burial will be on Monday, March 18th at Our Mother of Sorrows cemetery in Reno.
Gifts in Sandra’s memory can be made to Catholic Charities or to any charitable organization that reflects Sandra’s values and commitments, particularly organizations serving those who are suffering in body or in spirit.

Laura Noel Cassinelli - December 25, 1927 - January 11, 2024

Departed: 01/11/2024 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Laura Noel Cassinelli was born on Christmas Day 1927 and on January 11, 2024, warm weather parted briefly so that the heavens could welcome her with a blanket of snow across the very city where she was born. Her spirit, endowed to all who knew her, will be carried forth by her four beloved children; David, Jeannie, Tom and Laurie. Her invaluable lessons will be carried on for decades by her 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and countless friends and acquaintances who had the honor of knowing her. Laura was and will forever be a true Nevadan. She was a champion of the Reno/Sparks community for nearly a century. As a child growing up in Reno, she recalled joyfully spending time with her friend Wilma who often accompanied her on walks to get a 5-cent Coke and Superman comic at the Milk Depot on 4th St. Together they frequented the carnival and collected paper dolls out of the Reno Gazette Journal. She attended Orvis Ring Elementary, North Side Junior High and graduated from Reno High School in 1946. Shortly after graduation she would marry her husband, Chester Cassinelli. The two were married for 66 years until his passing in 2012. Together they lived and raised a family on a ranch in Sparks Nevada along the Truckee River. Chester and Laura were big supporters of UNR athletics, holding season tickets for both basketball and football for many decades. Their philanthropy in the community extended far beyond the University to schools, businesses, local charities and service clubs. Laura was a Livestock 4-H leader for twenty years. She was an avid bowler and golfer, whose name graces the walls in many of the cities clubhouses. She and her husband Chester often traveled to play some of America’s most beautiful golf courses. Beyond Reno, Laura’s presence was most often felt in Paradise Valley, NV, where for 53 years her two sons operated a cattle ranch in the shadow of Paradise Peak. There, with her family, she spent many peaceful weekends sitting beneath the cottonwoods and listening to the tranquil chorus of the small creek that wove through the ranch. She loved to live, adored travel and cherished her friendships dearly. She was a woman whose touch would calm and her resolve could shake the earth beneath your feet. She was of a generation that asked for nothing and gave everything. Like she was to her family 96 years ago on Christmas day, she was a gift. A gift to all who knew her. What she left behind to us all isn’t embodied in materialism but rather in memory. Memories of making raviolis with her daughters every holiday season. Memories of bringing the adolescent revolts of her two boys to a thundering halt. Memories her hand lifting your chin in moments of defeat, encouraging you to keep going. Memories of comfort and joy, laughter and an infectious smile that would stir even the most resolute of frowns. Memories of embracing her husband, reminding us all that true love never fades. She will always and forever be ‘Mom’, ‘Grandma’, ‘Great Grandma’ and ‘My Friend.’ Laura is survived by her children, David Cassinelli (Debbie), Jeannie Cassinelli (Larry), Tom Cassinelli (Sharon) and Laurie Bus (Steve). Grandchildren; Keri, Stacy Stoker (Dave), John (Sara), Bill (Mary), Michael (Lisa), Christina Darlington (Don), Denver Nelson (Gianna) Brad Bus (Caitlin), Brian, and Nicole Roberson (Erik). Great grandchildren; Kobe, Savannah, Mason, Dylan, Katie, Hunter, Hailey, Sienna, Cooper, Parker, Corey and Austin. The family would like to extend a thank you to Virginia, Jennifer, Yuliana, Maria and Jocline. Their care, company and friendship was greatly appreciated, by Laura most of all. Funeral services will be held at Mountain View Mortuary, 425 Stoker Ave, Reno Nv on February 3, 2024 at 11 a.m.

Marcia A. Johnson - March 19, 1940 - December 23, 2023

Departed: 12/23/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Marcia A. Johnson (83), of Reno, Nevada danced her way to heaven, having passed peacefully, on December 23, 2023. She was surrounded by her forever-loving four children.
Marcia was born to Margaret and Theodore Duarte, on March 19, 1940, in Lewiston, Maine. At the age of six, her grandparents signed her up for dance classes. It was soon evident she was quite talented, performing professionally by the age of ten.
As a teenager, she would meet the love of her life, Bruce Johnson, while dancing at the local television station. Bruce was the cameraman. It was love at first sight. After graduating Lewiston high school in 1958, Marica worked as an x-ray technician to help support Bruce through school. They married in 1961 and celebrated 62 years of marriage. We are certain Bruce, who pre-deceased her by just 25 days, escorted her to the pearly gates.
After moving to Reno, Marcia went on to pursue her RN Nursing degree. She worked full time, while she and Bruce raised their four kids, and was the first in her family to graduate from college.
No one cared more about people than Marcia. She was full of life and love, and the best Nurse and Mom in the world. She welcomed everyone into the family. While she was an incredible nurse, her true passion was dance. She never stopped moving, tapping her feet until the day she danced her way once more, to Bruce. Our Angel was truly the perfect mix of beauty, wit and intelligence and taught us what it meant to be selfless and embrace the little things.
Marcia is lovingly remembered, and her enduring legacy lives on through the hearts of her four devoted children, Mike, Robyn, Sam and Becky, six grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.

Diane Randles - January 02, 1941 - December 22, 2023

Departed: 12/22/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Diane who loved being a mom, grandma and great grandma departed her loving family on December 22, 2023.
Diane was predeceased by her husband John S. Randles, brother Robert Campbell, and sister Jeannette Nance. She is survived by her four children Tacy Couchman, Teres Dawson, Lisa Gordon and Danny (Daniel) Randles, her nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren, her brothers Sandy and Douglas Campbell, and her sister Vicki Wildman.
Diane was born in Palo Alto California on January 2, 1941. She grew up in Sunnyvale for most of her youth and later lived in Sanger, Beckwourth, and Reno but also lived in a few other cities for short times in between. It didn’t matter where she called home as long as she had family nearby. She was always welcoming and made you feel at home even if it was her first time meeting you. She was spiritual and attended church often throughout her life but truly believed that those who were good and kind had something to look forward to in death. Diane held several jobs throughout her life but none more fulfilling or rewarding as cooking. Whether it was making everything at her bakery in Portola, being a cook at a camp, cooking for the Diocese in Reno, or a sorority Fresno, it is what she loved. Simply cooking for family brought her so much joy and happiness to bring the family together. She loved big holiday meals and large family gatherings at the ranch, which included neighbors and friends, but they were all family to her. She loved the holidays, especially Christmas, from the decorations, baking cookies, wrapping presents, and of course all the Christmas movies, especially the Hallmark Christmas movies that she watched all year long!
Diane’s passion for cooking and baking wasn’t the only thing she loved. She loved to travel especially to the Caledonia Club of San Francisco’s Highland games. Having been an award-winning highland dancer and having played the tenor drums in her younger years gave her a lifelong appreciation of her Scottish heritage. She shared and passed down her appreciation of the Scottish heritage to her family. She was especially proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren carrying on the family tradition of attending the highland games each fall.

Dennis Eugene Lynch - September 11, 1958 - December 20, 2023

Departed: 12/20/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Dennis Eugene Lynch, a beloved husband, father, gramps, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on December 20th, 2023 at the age of 65. His passion for life, matter-of-fact sense of humor, and his overall love will never be forgotten.
Dennis was born in 1958 in Santa Barbara, CA to John and Mary Jo Lynch. He attended SDSU on a track-and-field scholarship where he competed in the long jump. It was here he and some friends started their band, "The Small World Band." A music enthusiast, Dennis was the lead guitar player and he and his band performed in venues large and small. The group still remained close throughout the years.
Dennis later worked at a Smithkline Beckman Instruments where he forged relationships that would last a lifetime including his wife, Lisa.
Dennis and Lisa continued to live in Southern California until the early 90's. Soon after the birth of their son, Dillon, they decided to start their own business, Hazardous Disposal Specialists. In the 32+ years since opening their doors, HDS has been a very successful business for them and continues to support their customers in environmental compliance. Once they settled in Truckee, CA in 1997 Dennis was active in his community-from coaching his sons' soccer teams, to sponsoring and organizing a local softball team, The Toxic Avengers-Dennis never turned down an opportunity to spend quality time and make memories with those he cared about. You could always count on Dennis's sense of humor to bring smiles to a crowd, usually by way of a dad joke. In addition to his fun demeanor, Dennis had a knack for throwing exceptional parties!
Dennis loved the outdoors and the rich history of the Truckee area, and instilled that appreciation onto his sons and the rest of his family members-going on hikes to Maiden's Retreat and Mt. Judah were always on Dennis's agenda. He also took great joy in riding his bike around town.
Dennis was an admirer of nature and music, a proud patriot of his country, and above all, he cared deeply about the people closest to him-a family man in every aspect.
Dennis will be sorely missed by all. He was preceded in death by his son, Dillon in 2020, survived by his wife, Lisa; his sons Jesse & Austin, nephews he helped raise Bryar & Aaron; his siblings Mary Jo, Pat and Celeste; his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

James Cle Allen - December 29, 1947 - December 19, 2023

Departed: 12/19/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Born December 29, 1947, in Junction City, Kansas, to James Arthur Allen and Effie LaVerne Allen (Arnett). Cle [pronounced KLEE] (as he was referred to throughout his lifetime) spent his entire youth in Junction City and graduated high school from Junction City High School in 1965. Despite being rejected by the Navy shortly after graduation, he showed remarkable resilience by enlisting in the Marine Corps a few weeks later. He spent three years in Vietnam as a Radio Technician specializing in Radio Repair, a role that demanded courage and dedication. Cle's rapid advancement in rank, earning the title of Private First Class by April 1966, Lance Corporal and Corporal by August 1966, Sergeant in March 1967, and Staff Sergeant in December 1968, is a testament to his exceptional service. He was honorably discharged due to health issues/medical conditions. He received the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge (M-14). At the time, he was the youngest to reach Staff Sergeant and was affectionately called the “Baby Marine.”
Once, while this “Baby Marine” was on leave in Wichita, Kansas, he met an attractive woman he could not take his eyes off. Sherry, a woman who had heard stories and rumors of the “Baby Marine” coming to town, was eager to meet him. Their meeting was the beginning of a profound love story that spanned 43 years. Cle and Sherry were married in September 1968 and remained married until Sherry sadly passed away in 2011 - a loss that left a permanent void in Cle's heart, a void he would never fully recover from. Cle’s lifelong career was managing and operating several restaurants, including Kentucky Fried Chicken (in Kansas), Wendy’s (in South Dakota), Red Robin (in Omaha), and Carlos O’Kellys (in Kearney and Omaha). His favorite was Nellie’s (in Jackson Hole, WY), an original concept developed with his partner of many years, Jim Nellis. The restaurant’s name did not come from Jim’s last name, as many may assume, but rather paid homage to a character on Little House on the Prairie – Nellie. Nellie’s thrived for over 10 years (1981-1993) in Jackson and eventually had a full bar named the Teton Rose added. The restaurant business was tough, but he always took great pride in being the best he could be. Nellie’s was Cle’s pinnacle of pride and joy!
The years spent in Jackson, WY, were some of the best years of his life. He would constantly reminisce about those years and always miss the area. He was an avid hunter and fisherman for many years and acquired a big game collection, including many deer, elk, antelope, and his ultimate trophy—a grizzly bear. There were also numerous fish and fowl in the collection, including geese, pheasant, ducks, rainbow trout, and others. Rumors have it he may have thwarted the elusive Jackalope as well! (he had one mounted and named him “Eddie”). Many of his prized trophies visited the taxidermist to be cherished forever.
Cle was always known for his unique sense of humor. He said, “When you get older, I’ll tell you a story!” His playful nature, sarcasm, and ability to bring laughter to others were the beloved parts of his personality. Most of us never reached that age to hear all of those stories, but the memories of his humor and unique personality will continue to bring us joy.
He believed in and would preach about “Think good things,”” Find the good in it!” and “Make them say WOW!”. In his heart, he never EVER stopped being a true Marine. In his many years operating restaurants, he would go out of his way to hold a special Marine Corps birthday party every year and lived by Marine’s standards and code until he died. His year was incomplete until he read and/or watched the annual USMC Birthday Message issued every year by the Commandant of the Marine Corps.
Cle was a hardworking man who always did his best with what he had and never put himself first. He would give the shirt off his back to a friend if they needed it and always did what it took to provide for his loved ones. Cle is survived by his daughter Amy Shaw (Sparks, NV), Grandchildren Taryn Barry (Denver, CO) and Sean Barry (Madison, WI), and brother Steve Allen (Junction City, KS). Cle’s friends are not to be ignored in this acknowledgment, as he established several close friendships over the years and classified many of them as a part of his family. You know who you are! Internment is scheduled for early June 2024, where his ashes are to be placed next to the love of his life, Sherry, in the family plot. In place of flowers, it is requested that a donation be made in his memory through the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) https://www.dav.org/

Keith Lockard - August 14, 1946 - December 12, 2023

Departed: 12/12/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Keith Lockard was born in Reno, Nevada on August 14, 1946 to E. (Earl) Keith Lockard, a successful local architect, and Lucile Mlynek, a former nurse and “Pink lady “at St. Mary’s Hospital. His father was an avid outdoorsman and he taught Keith to hunt and fish in Nevada along with valuing the responsible use of recreational land. Keith loved to feed the backyard birds at home with his wife, Jan who taught him the joy of rescuing and helping injured animals.
Keith attended Mount Rose Elementary School, Billinghurst Middle School and Reno High School, Class of 1964. Winning awards in math competition and acting in the senior class play. He graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and received a Masters Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco.
Keith’s engineering career began with the City of Los Angeles designing streets and storm drains. With concentrated study, he passed the difficult, all-day examination to become a professional registered engineer the very first time he took the test.
After moving to Northern California, he was employed by the City of San Leandro and was later appointed Traffic Engineer for the City of Walnut Creek until 1977. He loved working with a great team of people there, designing arterial street improvements, implementing a new traffic signal control system, managing a traffic accident reduction program, and preparing a comprehensive transportation plan for the city.
In 1978, while working in Washington County, Oregon (near Portland), he designed and led a winter emergency roadway repair survey. He managed a consultant team preparing a traffic and roadway management plan for the County.
He was hired by the City of Reno as a Department Head in Traffic Engineering in 1979 and held that position until the city structure was reorganized. He continued to perform his traffic engineer duties there until he retired in 2004. His work is reflected in the design of many streets and highways in Reno. He would proudly point out road improvement projects to his wife Jan, that he designed previously when working for the City of Reno, that were finished some years later.
Keith was a Medical Corpsman in the National Guard from 1969 to 1975. While in Walnut Creek, CA from 1972 to 1977. His monthly commitment included service at Letterman General Hospital. Through this service, he related that he experienced the empathy medical caregivers provide in the care of the injured and seriously ill.
He was given a Quilt of Valor for his patriot service at the Colonial Dames State Conference, March 2023 by Mona Crandell Hook and Marsha Strand, with whom he shared a colonial ancestry from 1600’s Nantucket Island. It was a very moving presentation and greatly appreciated. With some research, Jan found Keith’s Revolutionary War ancestor, Jonathan Hall from the Colony of New York.
Keith was proud of his wife Jan when she became President General of Colonial Dames XVII Century and took her to West Point twice, where she was a presenter at the awards ceremony. Their photo is on the cover of the Colonial Dames National Publication, standing with the award-winning cadet. Some of his activities in the community included completing the Leadership Reno Program 1993, sponsored by the Greater Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce. He served 11 years, on the Washoe County Library Board of Directors, 1990-2001 and was Chairman 1993-1995. Keith was Trustee of the Year for the Nevada Library Association in 1995. He received a certificate from the Chairman of the Washoe County Commission, James M. Shaw in 2001 for his active participation for a decade and a half, beginning in 1986, with service on the Blue-Ribbon Citizens’ Task Force and appointment to the Library Board of Trustees in 1990, serving on the board through June 2001. During that time Keith assisted in the formation of partnership libraries with the Washoe County School District, doubling the size of the County’s Library System.
He was recognized by the Washoe County Commission for his role in advocating for the 1996 voter-approved WC-1 Tax Override which included funds for remodeling and renovations for the Incline Branch Library, expanded hours, construction of the Northwest Library, which opened in 1999 and the opening of the Internet Branch Library. He took part in creating a mobile library to bring service to underserved areas within Washoe County.
Keith received a recognition certificate for his active participation in advocating for the year 2000 Voter-Approved Parks and Libraires Bond, providing two new libraries to serve the South Valley and Spanish Springs Communities. This was the Washoe County Question One to improve Parks, Libraries, Trails and Open Space, November 7, 2000.
He believed that Libraries were an important resource for all citizens of Washoe County. Libraries provide the opportunity to continue to learn, to explore ideas, and expand personal knowledge. Keith felt that learning was key to creating a better community and a better country. Exploring ideas opens the door to understanding. His concern for conservation and providing open space and trails for citizen enjoyment was also a lifetime commitment.
Keith was active on the Homeowners Association Board of Southwest Vistas in 2014, serving as President several terms. Jan and Keith continued to volunteer on the HOA Landscape Committee together.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jan Stevens Lockard, whom he met at the University of Nevada, Reno. Lockard Ducret Lieberman passed away in 2016.
Keith will be laid to rest in the Historic Carpinteria, CA Cemetery with his fathers’ family.
Jan would like to thank the many caring doctors and staff who helped Keith fight his cancer and multiple medical issues since 2002; living a quality life to the fullest: Dr. Jeffrey Millman, Dr. Angelo Kanellos, Dr. Tom Fang, Dr. Colt Williams, Dr. Todd Fredrick of Sutter Health, plus the doctors and staff of Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center. These medical professionals helped him, so he was able to take his dream trip to France with Jan in September.
Keith found spiritual comfort with the Unitarian Fellowship Church (uufnn.org) and he took Jan to the service last Christmas where they enjoyed singing traditional carols. You are welcome to attend a “Celebration of Life” to be held on January 6 at 2:00pm at the Unitarian Fellowship Church (uufnn.org) at 780 Del Monte Lane, Reno, Nevada.

Pat grew up in the house her father built, a stones throw from where the coal mine was that he worked in.
In 1958, Pat married a military man, Gail "Bart". Together, they went on to have five children: David, Mary, Mike, Nancy (Randy) and John (Nikki). She also had 8 total Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren, all of which she was proud to have nurtured a relationship with to some extent: Sarah (Nancy), Rebecca (Mary), Ray (Mike), Zach (Nancy), David (John) and Kelsie (John). Great-Grandchildren: Roland and Talon (Becky and Steve). Preceded in death by her parents, George and Edna; her brothers, John “Pete” and Fred; and her husband, Gail “Bart”
"Gma" taught all of us multiple lessons over the years, some of which include: electrical work, remodeling/painting, sewing, yard work, gardening, the value of reading, the importance of family and of course forgiveness and love. She was our definition of “The last of a dying breed", and regardless of what it was she was always there for her family whether it was: our letters, numbers and words; arts and crafts of all kinds; cooking and baking; values and morals; a willing ear to listen to whatever any of us were going through; and showing us all how to face adversity - even Cancer - with strength and dignity. She had a spirit that will live on in us all. And so we’re taking this opportunity to say that our family, both by blood and choice, has lost our moral compass.
May all of those who knew her never forget her sense of humor, her giving nature and her loving soul. Of all of her trials, tribulations, skills and achievements there was one thing that gave her a sense of purpose and fulfillment above all else: her family.

Joseph Guy Colosi - August 03, 1950 - December 06, 2023

Departed: 12/06/2023 (Reno)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Guy Colosi, a resident of Reno, Nevada, passed away at the age of 73 on December 6, 2023, succumbing to heart failure in the comfort of his home. Born on August 3, 1950, in the vibrant Chambersburg section of Trenton, New Jersey, Joe's early years were marked by the richness of his Italian heritage and a unique childhood split between his family's homes in New Jersey and the seaside haven of Seaside Heights.
In the early 1950s, Joe's family acquired a beach house in Seaside Heights, a cherished family retreat that played a pivotal role in shaping his character. He often fondly recalled this period, noting that his experiences at the shore profoundly influenced the person he became.
From a young age, Joe exhibited a keen interest in science, sparked by a gift from his Aunt Rose – a small microscope that opened up a world of wonders. His fascination with the microscopic soon expanded to the celestial when he acquired a telescope, coinciding with the dawn of the space race. Joe's inquisitive mind led him to pursue a degree in Geology at the University of Southern California, setting the stage for a lifelong passion and career in the field.
Joe's journey took a romantic turn in 1971 when he found his soulmate, Janetta, during a fraternity exchange event. Their love story unfolded, and they were married on February 14th, 1972, eager to embark on the adventure of building a family together. Over the years, they welcomed three children: Joelle, Dominic, and Justin.
A devoted family man, Joe reveled in the joys of grandparenthood, doting on Alexandra, Christian, Gioia, and Gianna. His commitment to family extended to his cousins Natalie, Beverly, and Ed, whom he survived.
A man of faith, Joe was an active member of the Catholic Church, finding solace and community in his spiritual journey. His intellectual curiosity knew no bounds, as evidenced by his avid listening to international broadcasts during the late 50s and 60s. Joe tuned in to stations from Canada, Britain, Australia, Chile, the Vatican, and more, fostering a deep interest in history and current affairs.
Joe's academic prowess and love for lively debates emerged during his high school years, where he challenged his history teachers and engaged in spirited discussions that encouraged independent thinking. His enthusiasm for science extended to a fascination with science fiction programs, marking the beginning of a lifelong passion for exploration and discovery.
As a husband and father, Joe embraced the responsibility of providing for his family, navigating the challenges of adulthood with resilience and a commitment to lifelong learning. He acknowledged the guiding influences in his life, including the Sisters Filippini, teachers in the Hamilton Township public school system, and geology professors at USC.
In reflecting on his life, Joe believed that the essence of living lies in continual learning and sharing one's knowledge with others, a principle he carried with him from childhood through his roles as a scientist, husband, and father.
Joe Colosi's memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. He leaves a legacy of intellectual curiosity, devotion to family, and a deep appreciation for the world's wonders. Preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Carmela Colosi, as well as Clare Arico Arneth and John Arneth, Joe is survived by his loving wife Janetta, children Joelle, Dominic, and Justin, grandchildren Alexandra, Christian, Gioia, and Gianna, and cousins Natalie, Beverly, and Ed. The impact of Joe's life resonates in the cherished memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him, and he will be dearly missed every day.
