Marilou Garcia Santiano - February 11, 1962 - November 09, 2023

Departed: 11/09/2023 (Carson City)
Obituary Preview: Marilou Garcia Santiano (Mary) was born in San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines on February 11th, 1961 and at age 9 moved with her Mom and sisters to Centralia and Chicago, Illinois. She graduated from Thornwood High School and Thornton Community College (TCC), where she was President of the TCC International Club.
Mary’s first job at Burnham Terrace Nursing Home taught her about compassion for seniors and deepened her admiration for doctors and nurses, like her mom. She was lured to travel, which was inspired by connections made through her work at American, Philippine, and Royal Jordanian Airlines, and through her work at Stanford University.
When she moved to the San Francisco Bay area, she brought in more sunshine. She enjoyed people. To Mary strangers became storytellers, and little local excursions became adventures, especially when they included her first rescue dog, Daisy. In 2007, to be closer to her family, she moved to Nevada and made it her home. Shortly after, she adopted Griffin, her second rescue. Mary took pride in creating the Dayton Valley Dog Park and getting to know fellow dog-lovers. Her plate was always full and colorful, making ordinary events “special occasions”. She couldn’t resist making elaborate costumes and beautiful floral arrangements. At Carson High School football games she dressed as a super-fan. She was a crafter, a creator, a connector and a collector. Her playful mischief was clearly realized in her role as a spy in Civil War Reenactments and the Misfits production in Dayton, where she was also a proud member of the Dayton Lions Club.
She lived her life with a distinct authenticity, sometimes sassy, always socially endearing, remarkably entertaining, and indelibly thoughtful. Her curiosity was extensive as was her library which took her from Nevada to Nepal, Tagalog to French, community politics to fly fishing, and international foods to marvelous thrifting. Those who surrounded her in her last years understood how her health had taken a toll and saw how she turned to painting to release her creativity. Even though she declined many invitations recently, she was present for her family and the Optimist Club of Reno.
Marilou was surrounded by her family and passed away on November 9th, 2023 at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. She is survived by her three siblings William, Mariza and Editha (Dee), brother-in-law Rick, sister-in-law Shirley, her three Frewert nephews, Richard Junior, Zachary and Miles, her two nieces, Mylene and Kristine (Ho), and Kristine’s husband, Jeff. Marilou was a genuine optimist, a gift and will be missed.

Cheryl Perkins Schroder - October 20, 1948 - September 26, 2023

Departed: 09/26/2023 (Carson City)
Obituary Preview: Cheryl Perkins Schroder, a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, departed this world on September 26th, at the age of 74. Her journey was unexpectedly cut short by a brief and brave battle with blood cancer, discovered through a kidney biopsy.
Cheryl Perkins, graced this world on October 20, 1948, in Gorham, New Hampshire. Born to parents William and Patricia Perkins, Cheryl's family later established their roots in Menlo Park, California, where she blossomed during her formative years. As the sole daughter among five beloved siblings, she is preceded in death by her older brothers Gary and Gregory, and is survived by her younger brothers Michael and Anthony Perkins.
In 1971, Cheryl embarked on a love story that spanned over four remarkable decades when she exchanged vows with James Allen Schroder. Their enduring love story persisted until James's passing in 2013. Their journey commenced when a chance introduction, facilitated by Jim's mother, who happened to be Cheryl's hairdresser, led to an exchange of letters while Jim was serving in Vietnam. Upon Jim's return from his deployment, their in-person meeting ignited a profound and lasting love between them.
Together, Jim and Cheryl shaped their lives in the vibrant community of Sunnyvale, California, where they both enjoyed thriving careers in the world of software and technology. They also lovingly raised their children in this bustling environment, creating lasting memories. Eventually, in 2011, they decided to retire to the serene beauty of Reno, Nevada, cherishing their golden years together.
Cheryl was a dedicated mother to her two children, Brandon of Genoa, Nevada, and Kira of San Jose, California. She invested her heart and soul in raising them, taking immense pride in their many achievements. Brandon, a former Marine Officer who admirably followed in his father's footsteps, now serves as a dedicated government employee. Kira, following in her mother’s inspirational footsteps, holds a business degree and currently thrives in the dynamic field of marketing in Silicon Valley. Cheryl was overjoyed to see her daughter embrace the business world with the same passion and drive that defined her own life. Cheryl's legacy lives on through her children, who carry forward her wisdom, tenacity, and strong family values.
In the decade following Jim's passing, Cheryl embraced a vibrant and fulfilling life. She dedicated herself to creating a warm and welcoming home where her grandchildren eagerly visited every week. She enthusiastically participated in a book club, engaged in fitness classes at the local gym through the Silver Sneakers program, enjoyed regular movie outings with her friends, and indulged in occasional bouts of excitement with a visit to the Tamarack Casino for some leisurely gambling. In her community, Cheryl also generously lent her time and energy by actively contributing to the Homeowners' Association, where she resided, making a positive impact on her neighborhood.
One of Cheryl's most cherished roles was that of a grandmother, a source of immense joy in her life. She held her five grandchildren close to her heart: Cailyn (15), Scott (14), Carly (12), and Cathryn (10), who belong to her son Brandon and her daughter-in-law Carolyn, and Eloise (6), the beloved child of her daughter Kira and son-in-law Steven. Affectionately referred to as "Grammy" by her grandchildren, Cheryl shared countless precious moments with them.
Their time together was filled with spirited games of Monopoly and card games that etched enduring memories into their hearts. Even in the age of technology, Cheryl and Eloise maintained a strong bond through the modern delight of FaceTime conversations, bridging the miles that separated them. Cheryl's dedication to her grandchildren extended to attending all their sporting events and school activities. Among her favorites was "Grandparents Day," where she became known for discreetly securing four cookies for her grandkids, putting their delight above her own cravings.
These facets of Cheryl's life added depth and richness to her character, underscoring the diverse passions and connections that made her the extraordinary person she was. While Cheryl's passing has left a void in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her, her memory will forever remain in our hearts. Her legacy will continue to shine brightly through the generations.
Cheryl's family wishes to express their profound gratitude to her beloved friends. Their steadfast support, which transcended mere words, brought solace and happiness to her life. Whether through lengthy phone conversations and text messages, accompanying her to movies and lunch, or visiting her during her hospital stay, these acts of kindness made her days and epitomized the genuine essence of friendship. It is heartwarming to know that she was enveloped by such exceptional friends who illuminated her every day.
Cheryl’s celebration of life will be commemorated with a Mass at St. Aquinas Parish, located at 751 Waverly Street in Palo Alto, California 84301 at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 27th, 2024. Following the service, a reception will be hosted, offering an opportunity for friends and family to gather in remembrance. While your presence would be deeply appreciated, it is by no means required. We come together to honor and celebrate the beautiful life of Cheryl Schroder, and your thoughts and remembrances are warmly welcomed.

Candice Dawn Wilkin - August 04, 1982 - June 29, 2022

Departed: 06/29/2022 (Carson City)
Obituary Preview: Many friends, close family members and coworkers lost a very special woman, Candy Wilkin, on June 29, 2022. Her passing was a complete shock and a very tragic loss. While awaiting surgery for a torn ACL in her knee, Candy suffered a blood clot that moved from her leg to her lungs. Her death was very sudden and unexpected yet painless and without suffering. Candy was born August 4, 1982 in Monticello, Utah to her mother, Sandy Wilkin and her father, Walter Wilkin. She was the youngest of three children, with 2 older brothers, Kelly and Lyle. Her childhood was filled with love and happy days growing up in this small town until her mother came down with breast cancer in 1984. Her father worked with his parents at a family owned heavy equipment business. Several years after the diagnosis of her mother’s cancer they moved to Winnemucca, Nevada where her father worked in the gold mines. Candy’s mother passed away on August 2, 1994. After their loss her father held the family together and raised his 3 children teaching them how to persevere through tragedy and treasure the life they had. Candy graduated from high school in 2001 from Winnemucca High School. She worked for BlockBuster through her highschool years and eventually moved to Gardnerville after graduating. After only a few months of being on her own, she got a job for the State of Nevada, where she quickly climbed ladders and rose to her current position as the leader of her department which investigates Medicaid fraud for the state of Nevada. In July 2002, Candy lost one of her older brothers, and once again Candy and her family pulled through their losses and became even closer to each other. Candy had a zest for life and an intrinsic need to ensure that things were fair and just. She would not tolerate unkind acts or unfair treatment of anyone or anything. She absolutely loved nature and animals, she was at the height of her glory when she was hiking a beautiful trail or just simply sitting on the porch taking in the tranquility with her husband and dog. One of her happiest days was the day she got her dog Nala from a rescue shelter. Candy and Nala were inseparable and filled each other’s lives with happiness and one of those most important, was Nala, her beloved dog. Just like her master, Nala has been one of the happiest dogs ever! One of the finest moments in Candy’s life was when she met her husband, Steven. They were made for each other. As we have witnessed them grow together, we have not witnessed such true and selfless love as they shared for each other. Steven brought so much joy to Candy’s life where he devoted his very being to making her happy and planning their next adventure. Candy had a knack for reading people, and she proved it when she picked Steven as her true soulmate. The 2 met in July 2015 and married February 7, 2020 in Hawaii. They brought each other so much happiness where they both were crazy in love and so compatible with each other. How her loved ones and her coworkers will ever fill the hole left by her passing, is yet to be seen. A quote from her coworkers displays how she was loved at her job as a leader as well. They wrote: “We are all so very grateful to have known Candy. She will forever be known as “that manager” who was legit-ly brilliant at developing a cohesive team and a work culture that embraced excellence and inspired creative problem solving day after day after day. She truly was one-of-a-kind, and a special human so very dear to us. We understand Candy can never be replaced because her leadership skills emanated from her heart, not the book shelves.” All who knew her know that our sense of loss cannot be measured or explained, but we know how Candy would want us to push on, just as she has, and turn our sorrow into the same passion and purpose she had for life. She will be missed, but also cherished for the blessings she gave to all of us throughout her life.
