Max graduated from LaFayette High School where he met his future bride, Joan Clinton. He was a versatile athlete. Max played tight end on the football team and was captain his senior year. He was also a catcher on the LHS baseball team. He and Joan both proudly wore sweet number “16” on their uniforms. Max was raised in a family that loved the Lord. He was a student of the Bible and became a faithful and respected Sunday School teacher in his adult years. He had multiple dog-eared Bibles well worn from running references during his study time. On the inside page of one of them is a handwritten verse from Psalms 90:12. It gives some insight into Max’s values and beliefs: “So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
Max had a strong work ethic. He believed in doing everything as unto the Lord. He was employed at Riegel Textile Mill in Trion as a young man, spending over a decade as a loom fixer. In 1964 at the age of 33, Max moved his family to Los Angeles, California. He applied for a job with Nicolas Electric Company in Beverly Hills, making quite a favorable impression on the owner. Max was hired on the spot, but the following year decided to return to his roots in north Georgia. He landed a job as a winder at the General Electric plant in Rome where he worked for 27 years. Max was an accomplished electrician. When the family home in LaFayette was damaged by a fire in the early 70’s, he rewired it on his own.
He retired from GE in the early 90’s. He and Joan loved to travel and made numerous cross-country trips savoring the beauty of America all along the way. She preserved their adventures in dozens of well-labeled photo albums. One of their favorite destinations was Bar Harbor, Maine.
