Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to express their condolences.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary often falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life and be able to provide accurate information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary may be more suitable for an online platform or a private memorial website.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or multiple photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other requested materials, by email or through their online portal.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming increasingly popular for people to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and leave a lasting legacy for your loved ones.

What is a self-written obituary called?

A self-written obituary is sometimes referred to as an "autobit" or "self-obit." It's a unique opportunity for individuals to tell their own story and share their experiences with others.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or online platform. Newspapers often charge by the word or line, while online platforms may offer package deals or flat fees. Be sure to check with the publication beforehand to understand their pricing structure.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult to make changes to an obituary once it's been published in print. However, online platforms may allow you to make edits or corrections within a certain timeframe.

How long are obituaries kept online?

The duration for which an obituary remains online varies depending on the publication or platform. Some websites may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

Yes, you can republish an obituary on special occasions like anniversaries or birthdays. This can be a meaningful way to continue honoring the memory of your loved one.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement that informs readers of someone's passing. It typically includes only basic information like name, age, date of birth and death, and funeral service details. Death notices are often used when there isn't enough space or time for a full obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice that provides factual information about the deceased person's life. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes and memories.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or poems can add a personal touch to an obituary and make it more engaging for readers. Choose something that resonates with the deceased person's personality or interests.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain microfilm records of past publications. Many genealogy websites also offer access to historical obituaries and other documents.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes, even if someone has been deceased for many years, you can still write an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young?

When writing an obituary for someone who was young, it's essential to be sensitive to the grieving family and focus on celebrating the person's life rather than dwelling on their untimely passing.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include this information in the obituary as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or online platform immediately if you notice any errors or inaccuracies in the published obituary. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as soon as possible.

Is it appropriate to include humor in an obituary?

Yes, incorporating humor into an obituary can help capture the personality of the deceased person and make the tribute more relatable and engaging for readers.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms can be a powerful tool for sharing news about someone's passing and reaching a wider audience. You can share a link to the published obituary or create your own post with relevant details.

How do I ensure that my loved one's online presence is respectful after they pass away?

Talk to your loved one about their digital legacy before they pass away. Make sure you have access to their accounts and consider setting up memorials or legacy contacts on social media platforms.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a type of obiturary that is written while the person is still alive. It allows them to reflect on their life experiences and share their story with others while they are still able to do so.
