Russell, the son of Francis and Connie Redding, was born on June 25, 1958, in Grinnell. He was recently retired after working as a semi-truck driver for around 40 years. Russell lived in California for most of his life but moved back to Iowa after his retirement. Russell enjoyed watching car and motorcycle racing and all types of sports, particularly football and baseball.
Russell is survived by his children, Reve Pichardo of Fallon, Nevada, Joseph Skates of Medford, Oregon, and Joseph Skates of Fallon, Nevada; mother, Connie Skates; brothers, Roger Redding of Utah, Rodney Skates of California, and Randal Skates of California; and aunts, Joan Olson of Grinnell and Carol Pickett of Ankeny. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Redding and step-father, Tom Skates.

Helen, the daughter of Eric Hans and Ruth (Urban) Heinze, was born on August 5, 1938 in Terre Bella, California. She graduated from high school and received her nursing certificate.  She worked as a CNA at a hospital in California. After spending time between Texas and California, Helen moved to Iowa in the late 1970’s. In 1977, she was united in marriage with James Bauer.  In addition to being a homemaker, Helen delivered the Des Moines Register for years and also mowed yards and shoveled snow. She enjoyed coloring, baking, crocheting, and doing yardwork.
Helen is survived by her children, Eric Trout and Harold Swan, Jr. (Mesenda), both of Newton; grandchildren, Alex Swan, Skai Swan (Eric Cassady), Caleb Swan, Carle Schwochow, Kollin Hupp, Dominick Wallace, and Brennden Myers; her great-grandchildren, James, Colt, and Troy; and a sister, Doris (John) Toste.  She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Bauer in 2009; and a sister, Pat Heinze.

Jacquie, the daughter of Earl and Verta (Kratzer) Latimer, was born on September 3, 1933 in Bloomfield. In 8th grade, she began dating Dwight Huggins, who was a year older than her. In 1951, Jacquie graduated from Bloomfield High School and then attended UNI for a year.  On July 10, 1953, she and Dwight were united in marriage in Bloomfield.  They moved to follow Dwight’s career as a teacher to the Corydon and Mid-Prairie School Districts before making their home in Newton in the mid 1960’s. Dwight and Jacquie were blessed with two children, Laura and David. Jacquie was a stay-at-home mom and homemaker until the kid’s went to school. She then worked for Production Credit Association (PCA) in Newton as an Administrative Assistant. Jacquie was a member of St Luke United Methodist Church. She was a part of many Bridge Clubs and enjoyed having coffee with her friends. She also liked to bowl and golf.  Jacquie had a love for chocolate, salty potato chips, and corn of the cob.
Jacquie is survived by her husband, Dwight Huggins of Newton; children, Laura (Kurt) Van Zee of Newton and David (Katie) Huggins of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Maggie (Aaron) Riggs, Kylie Van Zee, Benjamin Huggins, and Andrew Huggins; her great-grandchildren, Grant and Hallie Riggs; and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, JoAnne Rupe, Lula Mae Earls, and Earla Jean Nemitz; and a brother, John Latimer.

Frederick LeRoy Dimon - May 29, 1944 - April 20, 2022

Obituary Preview: Frederick LeRoy Dimon, 77, of Granville County and a longtime resident of Newton, Iowa passed away Wednesday, April 20,2022 at Duke University Medical Center.
Fred was born in Jasper County, Iowa on May 29, 1944 to the late LeRoy Athea Dimon and Shelda Irene Vestal. Fred graduated from Newton High School in 1962 where his 440-yard relay team held the state record for numerous years.  He went to the University of Iowa on a track scholarship, graduating in 1966 ROTC commissioned 2nd Lt. in the USAF.  From there he entered the Air Force completing one tour of duty in Vietnam from 1968-1969.  Upon completing his service in 1971 with rank of Captain, he returned to Newton.  He was united in marriage to Margaret Schutty on April 27, 1973.  Throughout his years in Newton he was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Newton Elks B.P.O.E. He also served on the City Council, booster club, and Veteran’s Commission.  He enjoyed his time on the golf course with all of his golf buddies and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.  In 2021 he and Margaret relocated to Creedmoor, NC to be near their daughter and her family.  Spending time with all of them was his greatest joy.
Visitation will be held Sunday, April 24,2022 from 1:15 – 1:45 PM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Creedmoor.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of forty-nine years, Margaret Schutty Dimon; one daughter, Michele Dimon Walker and her husband John Briggs; six grandchildren, Madi, Aidan, Jack, Delaney, Kennedy and Tanner; a brother-in-law, Larry Trotter and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty Harrington and Barb Trotter and one nephew, Randy Harrington.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, April 24,2022 at 2:00 PM at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Creedmoor officiated by Priest Padre Leon.

Rick, the son of George and Betty (Hummel) Sickle, was born on February 12, 1947 in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School and then joined the Job Corp; learning building maintenance in New Mexico. Upon returning to Newton, he worked maintenance in many places around the area including Newton Manufacturing, the Jasper County Care Facility, and the Newton Motor Inn.   Richard was united in marriage with Bonnie Stoner.  They lived in Newton and later moved to Missouri. Following Bonnie’s death in 2000, Rick moved back to Newton. For the last 13 years, he had lived in Des Moines. Rick enjoyed volunteering at the Salvation Army, WWE Wrestling, gardening, spending time in his pool, and playing the slot machines at Prairie Meadows.  He and his significant other, Betty, also liked to go “curbin” during the spring clean-up days.
Rick is survived by his daughters, Kelly (Russell) Callison of Prairie City and Misty (Jarrod) Fontanini of Granger; grandchildren, Jessica, Nancy, Miranda, Kelsey, Russell, Jr., Hailey, Madison, and Lydia; his seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and his significant other, Betty Huffmann of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie Northcutt; brother, Wayne Northcutt; grandson, Hunter Pierce; and a great-grandson, Brandon Van Sant.

She graduated from Norfolk Senior High School in 1961 and attended Norfolk Junior College. On June 30, 1962, Shirley was united in marriage with Ronald W. Gast in Norfolk, Nebraska. They moved to Newton in 1969, and Shirley worked as a secretary for the Jasper County Attorney’s Office for over 30 years. Shirley was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary and an avid fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Kansas City Chiefs. She also enjoyed camping at Lake Red Rock and at the Iowa State Fair and loved cocktail hour
Shirley is survived by her son, Jeff (Heidi) Gast of Ankeny; grandsons, Wesley A. Gast (Natalie Goyette) of Solon and Jacob A. Gast of Ankeny; and sister, Sandra (Don) Humphrey of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Ronald in 2000.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the Bridges of Ankeny, Comfort Care, and the Critical Care Unit at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center who took extraordinary care of Shirley towards the end of her life.

Lance worked as a carpenter for the Carpenters 106 Union for over 26 years. Lance was united in marriage with Mary Ann Drake on April 6, 2006 in Des Moines. They made their home in Newton. Lance enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.
Lance is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Bertrand of Newton; daughters, Christa (Tanner) Ferguson of Oskaloosa, Sierra Hamm (Tyler Plante) of Newton, and Cheyenne (Aaron) Love of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Dominic, Aubrey, Jameson, Ian, Lainey, and Zea; and his sister, Nicole (Jas) Spargur. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry Roush; mother, Dana Lloyd; and his maternal grandparents who had raised him from a young age after the death of his parents, Donald and Mary Bertrand.

Carl W McGee - May 24, 1938 - April 10, 2022

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 15, 2022, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends after burial and military honors at Palo Alto Cemetery with a lunch and the Moose Lodge Ritual at the Moose Lodge from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  Memorials in Carl’s name (checks made payable to Rebecca Harned) at the funeral home.
Carl, the son of Loren and Virginia (Atwood) McGee, was born on May 24, 1938 in Iowa City. He was a lifelong resident of Jasper County. At the age of 17, Carl joined the U.S. Navy and served his country for six years, four years active duty and two in the reserves. During his time in the service he received the Good Conduct Medal. Carl returned to Newton and worked for the Maytag Company. He began his career as a carpenter and retired as the UAW Union Representative. On May 16, 1987, Carl was united in marriage with Elizabeth (Keith) DeKoning in Kellogg. After his retirement, Carl sold real estate for Re/Max and worked in maintenance at the Jasper County Youth Shelter and Progress Industries. He also managed Greenway Apartments for many years.
Carl was a 50 year member of the Newton Lodge #59 AF & AM. He served as Worshipful Master of Meridian Lodge #280 AF& AM in 1969. He was a District Lecturer for the Grand Lodge of Iowa AF & AM. He also served as High Priest of Gebal Chapter R.A.M., Illustrious Master of Malachi Council #55 R. & S.M., and Eminent Commander of Oriental Commandery #22 Knights Templar. Carl had been honored by receiving the Knight of York Cross of Honour (KYCH) in Charles Clyde Priory #42 KYCH.
Carl also held several offices in the Moose Lodge; serving as Ritual Trustee, Governor, Jr. Past Governor, Deputy Supreme Governor, and President of Iowa Eastern Nebraska Association. He recently received the Pioneer Award from the Moose Lodge.  Carl was also a member of the American Legion Post 111 and loved his good friends at the Legion that he would have drinks with on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Carl was an accomplished bowler and was a member of the Jasper County Bowling Hall of Fame. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking, hunting, camping and racing stock cars.  Carl loved his grandchildren and attending their activities.
Carl is survived by his children, Ronnie McGee of Des Moines, Rick (Sandy) McGee of Newton, and Rebecca (James) Harned of Newton; step-children, Mark DeKoning of Unionville, Missouri and Julie (John) Cummins of Newton; his 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol (Bob) Boyer of Lakeland, Florida; half-brother, Jack McGee of Chicago, Illinois; his brother-in-law, LeRoy Cloyd of Ottumwa; and lifelong friend, Ralph Winchell.  He was preceded in death by his father, Loren McGee; mother and step-father, Virginia and Max “Shorty” McDaniels; wife, Elizabeth McGee; son, Ray McGee; step-son, Scott DeKoning; granddaughter, Mandi Ehler-McGee; his siblings, Ted (Hazel) Sutton, Phyllis Seals, Anne Cloyd, Kay Harlow, Mike McDaniels, and Catherine McGee in infancy; and his half siblings, Alan McGee and Catherine Winbun.

Paul, the son of Paul F. and Gladys V. (Elliott) Guy, was born on February 11, 1930, at Skiff Hospital, the same week his parents moved to the now “family farm” northwest of Newton. The farm was “Home Base” for Paul, as he graduated from Newton High School in 1948, except for when he attended Iowa State and the two years he was in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
On November 21, 1959, Paul married the former Jane Rowe in Waterloo, whom he met through a relative in February of that year. Both were only children and became parents of three sons and a daughter. Paul was a lifelong farmer. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, leader of the Ridge Road Runners 4-H Club, a Newton Township Trustee, and the Treasurer for the NHS Class of 1948.  Paul was proud of his meticulous bookkeeping. He enjoyed reading history books and his work on the farm.
Paul is survived by his children, Michael P. (Rhonda) Guy of Newton, Mark P. (Linda) Guy of Iowa Falls, Eric P. (Naomi Sea-Young Wittstruck) Guy of Des Moines, and Gretchen J. Guy of Newton; grandchildren, Matthew (Summer) Guy, Alan (Sarah) Guy, Jaya Guy, Maya (Michael) Van Voorst, Jana Guy, Luke Guy, Jordan Liekweg, Leah (Madi) Guy, Tad (Ryan Koning) Guy, and Jonah Guy; and his great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tanner, Tyler, Grace, Rebecca, Elizabeth, and Caleb. Alice was united in marriage with Earl Farr on August 29, 1959 in Newton. In addition to being a homemaker, Alice worked as a cook at many area restaurants. Alice loved sitting and enjoying the outdoors and watching birds. She also loved to garden and do word searches. Alice was a huge fan of Elvis Presley.

Dustin, the son of Chris and Kathee (Davis) Doran, was born on January 10, 1981 in Des Moines. He grew up in Belmond and graduated from Belmond-Klemme High School in the class of 1999. In Belmond, Dustin worked for the Eaton Corporation and later for Fareway. He later attended the welding program at DMACC and moved to Newton.  Dustin continued to work for Fareway in Newton and Des Moines and most recently had worked for UFP Technologies in Clinton. Dustin loved music and had played drums in a band and was a DJ. He also liked to go fishing, ride motorcycles, and collect hats and shoes.  Dustin was a talented artist and had a passion for drawing and painting.
Dustin is survived by his mother, Kathee (Mark) Shaffer of Newton; father, Chris Doran of Newton; son, Gavin Williams of Newton; three siblings, Robbie Doran of Newton, Easter Illingworth of Denver, Colorado, and Nathan Dewar of Newton; and his nieces and nephews, Madison Doran, Drew Doran, and Elijah Doran. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bud and Norma Davis and paternal grandparents, Paul and Marian Doran.

Ed, the son of Edward Bethel and Jean (Hobbs) Moore, was born on July 27, 1951, in Newton. He graduated from Newton High School in 1969. On December 20, 1991, Ed was united in marriage with Vicki Baxter. Ed worked as a machinist and mechanic, but he was passionate about drumming and singing. He shared his talents at Community Heights Alliance Church, among other places, using his gifts to praise God. Ed also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and woodworking. His family will remember him as a great teacher, especially when it came to the Bible.

Linda, the daughter of Harry and Lucille (Sawyer) Bingaman, was born on November 25, 1942. As a teen her family moved to Des Moines and she graduated from North High School. She was united in marriage with Robert Ward. They lived around the United States, but always called Iowa home. They permanently moved back to Iowa in 1976. Linda worked and later retired as a nurse from Iowa Methodist Medical Center. In 2016, Linda moved to Newton. She attended the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church and was a past member of the Lady of the Moose. Linda enjoyed reading and search-a-words. She also liked to collect elephants, watch birds, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Linda is survived by her sons, Langdon Paul (Shawn) Ward of Burton, Michigan and Randy Ward of Newton; grandchildren, Robert (Anna) Ward, Heather Ward, James Ward, Logan Ward, and Dominic Ward; her sister, Marilyn Burns of Jamaica, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; daughter-in-law, Samantha Ward; two brothers, Albert and Harlan Bingaman; a sister in infancy; and a niece, Hallie Burns.

JoAnn C. Woodrow Shannon, the daughter of Myron D. and Jennie M. Vardo Woodrow was born on November 17, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a graduate of Newton High School in 1954. JoAnn had also attended 2 years of college.
On June 25, 1954, JoAnn was united in marriage with Marlan R. Shannon in Newton. They were blessed with three children, Douglas, Mary and Gregory. JoAnn was the office manager for the Jasper County Public Health Nursing Office. She had also been a substitute Para-Professional in the Newton and North Liberty school districts for 14 years. JoAnn had been a member of ABWA, where she had been voted Businesswoman of the Year. She had belonged to many quilting clubs. JoAnn had been a member of the Hottie Red Hatters in Coralville. JoAnn had been a member of ABWA, where she had been voted Businesswoman of the Year. She had belonged to many quilting clubs. JoAnn had also been a member of the Hottie Red Hatters in Coralville. She had many quilts for all her kids and grandkids. JoAnn loved to go camping at Cuttys in Grimes. She was an only child but she loved all of her extended families of the Guthries, Woodrows, Vardos and Shannons. JoAnn had also enjoyed sewing and knitting. She was a loving and caring wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma and friend.
JoAnn died on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at Accura Healthcare of Newton East in Newton surrounded by the love of her family. She was 86. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marlan R. Shannon in 2002 and granddaughter, Nicole Shannon in 1984.
Those left to cherish JoAnn’s memory are her children, Douglas R. Shannon of Kansas City, Missouri, Mary (Larry) Roper of Altoona and Greg (Linda) Shannon of Loudon, Tennessee; Abbey (Andrew) Davis of Manchester, New Hampshire, Jordan Shannon of Kansas City, Missouri, Molly (Tyler) Sullivant of Kansas City, Missouri, Maggie (Dakota) Blankenship of Kansas City, Missouri, Macey Shannon (fiancé, Corry Hawkins) of Severance, Colorado, Danielle (Earl) Putz of Waterloo, Kaitlin Gordon of Ames and Ryan Shannon if Grand Rapids, Michigan; here seven great-grandchildren, with a great-grandson due in May; and JoAnn’s very special friend, Glynn Williams.

Jerry, the son of Harry and Fern (Berry) Butler, was born on November 11, 1938, in Baxter. He graduated from Baxter High School in 1957. Jerry worked for Maytag as a repair parts specialist and supervisor for 32 years, from 1965 to 1997. On September 17, 1961, Jerry was united in marriage with Janice Clement, and they had three daughters together before Janice’s passing in 1999. On July 2, 2005, Jerry was united in marriage with Carol Van Gorp. Although Jerry was a lifelong resident of Newton, he spent the last 18 winters in Florida with Carol. Jerry was also a member of the Elks for 20 years, the American Legion, and the Ikes. In his spare time, Jerry enjoyed farming, golfing, and coaching his daughters in sports. He also had his pilot’s license and made a landing at every airport in Iowa.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Carol Butler of Newton; daughters, Jolene Yeager of Newton, Julie (Terry) McGinley of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Jane (Rod) Warnke of Newton; step-children, Rick (Arlene) Dahlem of Florida, Diane (Gordy) Gilman of Wisconsin, and Mike (Terri) Dahlem of Texas; grandchildren, Calvin Waskow of Des Moines and Maddison Berstler of Iowa City; and brother, Burton Butler of Cedar Rapids. Dorothy Gale Bascom Carpenter, the daughter of Albert and Albia Zinfer Bascom, was born on August 4, 1930 in Vinton, Iowa. She graduated in 1948 from Van Horne High School in Van Horne, Iowa. Dorothy attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI), where she met the love of her life, Gerald. She later received her BA in Elementary Education and her MA in Elementary Education from the University of California Northridge.
On October 28, 1949, Dorothy was united in marriage with Gerald Carpenter in Vinton. They were blessed with three children, Larry, Cathy and Barb. Dorothy was an-award winning elementary school teacher and reading specialist.
Dorothy had been a long time and very active member of PEO and of the United Methodist Women. She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. Dorothy enjoyed reading and reciting poetry, especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was extremely organized and took excellent care of herself and everyone she loved. Dorothy was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and teacher.
Dorothy died on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at Park Centre in Newton surrounded by the love of her family. She was 91. She was preceded in death by her parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
Those left to cherish Dorothy’s memory are her husband of 72+ years, Gerald of Newton; son, Larry (Joy) Carpenter of Tinley Park, Illinois; daughters, Cathy (Mike) Wignall of Newton and Barb (Ben) Bussman of Genoa, Illinois; her six grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, her brother, Vernon Bascom of Vinton and many nieces and nephews.

He was a Green Bay Packers Gold Package season ticket holder and loved going to the games at Lambeau Field with the love of his life, Barb McClure, and his boys.
Mike is survived by his significant other of 25 years, Barbara McClure of Kellogg; his sons, Lee (Emily) Blythe of Pardeeville, Wisconsin, and Forrest (Josie) Blythe of Ames; brother Patrick (Donna) Blythe of Reasnor; sister Susan (Paul) Ponder of Prairie City; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Mary Ellen Blythe, and sister, Patricia Blythe.
