Stephen J. Ralph - January 01, 1945 - September 05, 2023

Departed: 09/05/2023 (Haubstadt)
Obituary Preview: Stephen John Ralph
Haubstadt – Stephen J. Ralph, 78, of Haubstadt passed away on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at North River Health Campus in Evansville. He was born on January 1, 1945, and was raised by his parents J.B. and Matilda (Stratton) Ralph.
He married his devoted wife of 40 years, Janet (Schmitt) Ralph, in Fort Branch, and together they raised their family in Haubstadt. After unexpectedly losing his father at age 18, he and his brother co-owned Lakeview Truck Stop in Haubstadt for over 30 years. Steve was a founding member of the Haubstadt Chamber of Commerce and the Haubstadt Sommerfest, an active parishioner at St. James Catholic Church and later in life at St. Rita’s Catholic Church in Kincaid, an avid racing and Purdue sports fan, enjoyed boating on Lake Barkley while listening to Jimmy Buffet and spending time with the many friends he made throughout his life. Steve was a “Jack of all trades, master of none” kind of guy, and there was never a home project or vehicle he would not at least attempt to fix, usually with one of his children by his side.
His real legacy and what he was most proud of was the large, close family he and Janet created. He spent countless hours coaching, officiating, and watching his children on the court, field, or pool deck, and he instilled in them the most important values of faith, family, and a strong work ethic. He was proud that all six children attended and graduated from Purdue University, and after 26 years of tuition payments he joked they should put his name on a building, but all he got was a brick at Ross Ade Stadium. He was even more proud of the families his children created, and you could not have a conversation with him without him mentioning his grandchildren and their many accomplishments.
After Janet’s death he was blessed with a second love and was married to Carol Foli-Ralph of Kincaid, Illinois for nine years until her passing. His family grew to include Carol’s daughter and extended family and community in Kincaid, IL, where he lived for 15 years.

Juliann A. Riffert - September 26, 1931 - May 16, 2023

Departed: 05/16/2023 (Haubstadt)
Obituary Preview: Juliann Agnes “Lamey” Riffert went home to be with our Heavenly Father in the late hours of May 16th 2023. Juliann “Tootie”, passed peacefully and surrounded by her loved ones.
Juliann/Tootie was born September 26th 1931, to Edward and Cleanora Lamey, on a farm in St. James Indiana. Early in life, Juliann met the love of her life Jerry Riffert who she would marry in December 26th 1953. They were inseparable in their 70 years of marriage; their hobbies, day-to-day, outings, and ultimately their careers, beautifully intertwined. Juliann and Jerry lived a happy and simple life in Haubstadt Indiana where they would reside for over 65 years, overtime becoming a well-known fixture in town. Throughout those years they would raise four children, Jeff, Jill, Jay, and Jana. As a lover of beauty and hair, Juliann went on to be a hairdresser in a charming handcrafted salon in the basement of their family home, and later her and Jerry co-owned a successful local liquor store, “Maidlows” and “Tom and Jerry’s”. Years later they decided it was time to retire and live out the rest of their days focusing on their family and nurturing their love.
Holidays spent at the Riffert home were some of the warmest and happiest moments for the whole family. “Tootie” decorated the house top to bottom with festive and cheerful décor and would prepare a feast of everyone’s favorite dishes, most importantly her tubs of sugar cookies and bourbon slushes. Her gifts were always thoughtful, and stylish even in her later years. Thankfully, she passed along handwritten recipe cards to her grandchildren who will continue her cherished dishes for years to come.
Above all, Juliann loved her family deeply. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild, were the light of her life. She was a devoted family woman who spent most of her days caring for Jerry, their home, and spending time with her closest friends. There wasn’t a soul in town who didn’t know and adore “Tootie”, and look forward to her witty humor and kind heart. Her second home was St. Peter and Paul, where she spent every Sunday and often times other days of the week emersed in prayer and the word of Christ. Anytime she knew someone going through hard times, she made the effort to walk down to the church, light a votive candle and pray for their well-being. Juliann’s other hobbies included handing out her famous sugar cookies, being a prayer partner at church, playing various card games, traveling to visit family out of state, volunteering at hospitals, eating out at her favorite restaurants, basking by the pool, and going for walks around the neighborhood.
She also organized the concession stand at the Haubstadt Little League park in 1962, the first year of the Little League program.
While most people forget birthdays or anniversaries, there was never a birthday, holiday, or special event forgotten by “Tootie”, who always sent a card and treat to family and friends. She always made sure others knew she was thinking of them, loved them, and that they should be celebrated. She was truly someone special.
Juliann was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Cleanora, sister Ruth May, two brothers Jerry Lamey and Edward Lamey, and son-in-law Chris Reed.
Juliann leaves behind her loving husband Jerry; her four children - Jeff (Carol) Riffert, Jill (Beth) Riffert, Jay Riffert, and Jana (Tom) Reed-Kenney; four grandchildren – Jesse Riffert, Logan Reed, Chase Reed, and Alexis Reed; one great grandchild – Charly Reed. Also 2 sisters; Margaret Emge and Lucille Halbig and 1 brother, Joe Lamey along with countless friends and neighbors whom she impacted during her 91 years of life.
There are no words that can express our gratitude toward our family and close friends who were there for her on the night of her passing. Along with a heartfelt thank you to North River Health Campus for working tirelessly to provide answers and comfort to Juliann and her family the weeks before her passing.
Visitation will be held at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Haubstadt, IN on Saturday, May 20, 2023 from 9 to 11:00 AM with a Rosary service beginning at 8:45 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at the church on May 20 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Departed: 04/29/2023 (Haubstadt)
Obituary Preview: Edwin Richard Lamey of Haubstadt, IN died in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 29, 2023, at St. Vincent ICU in Evansville. He was 88 years old.
He was born November 12, 1934, to Edward and Cleanora Lamey.
Ed grew up on a farm in St. James where he lived his entire life. It was on that land that Ed grew not only fruits and vegetables, but a family. He loved the land and adored his family, both easily recognizable to everyone.
Ed graduated from Haubstadt High School in 1952. He was the president of his Freshman and Senior class.
He married Joanne Meny on September 13, 1955, and they spent 67 loving years together. After farming most of his life, Ed went to work at Emge Packing and spent 25 years there. After that, he and his brother Joe started L&L Liquors in Owensville. They eventually sold that store and built a new store on Highway 41 in Fort Branch. Most local folks had a calendar from L&L Liquors with the catchy slogan: “Spirits Low, See Ed and Joe.”
In his later years, Ed spent time helping at the local Co-Op where his co-workers were like family to him.
Ed and Joanne frequently visited friends and family and often took grandkids with them on their journeys. They managed to visit all 50 states and they traveled to many parts of Europe. The highlight of their travels was a 50th anniversary cruise with their entire family.
Ed was a Purdue fan, and he adored the St. Louis Cardinals. He attended many Cardinal baseball games, and he was in the stadium when Mark McGwire hit homerun number 62. He was a good conversationalist but an even better listener. He would often say, “You can’t learn anything with your mouth open.”
Ed was an avid gardener and a tireless worker. But he always found time for family events. And he always enjoyed a relaxing sit on his front porch swing.
He was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the K of C.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Cleanora; granddaughter, Leah Luebbehusen; sister, Ruth May, brother, Jerry Lamey; and son-in-law, Allen Duncan.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Joanne (Meny) Lamey; and four children, Gayle (Phil) Miller, Nancy (the late Allen) Duncan, Kathy (Dave) Ingler, and David Lamey (Ann Lawhorne).
