LaVada Allred Layton - July 17, 1926 - May 11, 2024

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Safford)
Obituary Preview: LaVada Allred Layton, a longtime resident of Central, entered into eternal life Saturday morning, May 11, 2024, at the Beehive Homes of the Gila Valley in Thatcher, from causes incident to age. LaVada was 97.
LaVada was born July 17, 1926, in Central, to Joseph N. Allred and Ellis Myrtle Porter. She was the fifth of seven children. She cherished her family and the memories she had of her growing up years in Central. After she graduated from high school, LaVada attended “Beauty School” in Tempe, Arizona. The skills she developed at this school would become an invaluable asset to her family and friends throughout her life.
She married Melburn Corthel Layton, her childhood friend, on November 24, 1946, in Lordsburg, New Mexico, following his release from the Army after serving in World War II. They were later sealed in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They raised their six children on a farm in Willcox, Arizona. She was a hard worker and contributed much to the needs of her family and the farm. Some of her many chores were milking cows, driving tractors, and hoeing weeds from the cotton fields. She helped in any way she could to help her husband and her children be successful.
LaVada dreamed of having a college education. After her children were raised, she attended Eastern Arizona College in Thatcher, Arizona and graduated in 1980, when she was 54 years old. Not only was this a special accomplishment, but she was thrilled that her two youngest children received their diplomas that same evening.
LaVada had many talents. She loved music and was a talented artist. She wrote stories and plays and was also a great seamstress. She was wonderful in the kitchen, as well. Her homemade ice cream and doughnuts were very popular. Later in life, she spent her time making quilts and crocheting Afghan blankets that she gave to her children and grandchildren.
One of LaVada’s favorite places to be was in the mountains. In the summer she would take grandchildren to the cabin on Mount Graham and spend a few days together. There are so many fond memories of hikes around the loop, crafts made, delicious food to eat, and many life lessons learned.
LaVada was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in many callings. One of her favorite callings was teaching the youth as a Seminary teacher. She spent countless hours preparing her lessons and finding unique ways to teach her students. Her love for Heavenly Father and her students made her a very effective teacher and her students adored her. She also had privilege to serve with her husband as a temple worker in the Mesa Arizona Temple and as missionaries for the church at Cove Fort in Utah. She loved people and went the extra mile to make others feel special as she served those around her. Her natural goodness and charitable heart will long be remembered and admired.
LaVada is survived by: her children, Ross Layton (Mareen), Pamela Webb (Keith), Jeffrey Layton (Catherine), Nyle Layton (Teresa) and  Jo Lynne Green (Jeffery); a son-in-law, Chuck Duncan; her sister, Edith Jackson; 32 grandchildren, 103 great-grandchildren, and 18 great -great -grandchildren. LaVada was preceded in death by: her parents; her five siblings; her husband, Corthell; and her daughter, Lona Ilene Duncan.
Graveside services for LaVada are currently pending for Saturday morning, May 18, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., at the Central Cemetery by Bishop Danny Dorr of the Central Second Ward.

Geneva Gregory - November 15, 1938 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Safford)
Obituary Preview: Geneva Ann Gregory, born November 15, 1938, was reunited with her daughter May 1, 2024. She passed away peacefully after having health complications. Some could say that she left her husband and many loved ones but that is not the case. She was granted the ability to be with her daughter, parents, and two sisters whom she loved dearly and missed even more.
Geneva can now enjoy their presence while watching over the remainder of her family until we are all together again. Many knew her as Gee, Aunt Gee Gee, Grammy, and Grandma. She touched the life of anyone she encountered. Touching the lives of her students in her early days of teaching to the nurses who helped her to the very end. All who would say that she was the sweetest most caring woman. Geneva loved being a wife to Stuart Gregory, a mother to her daughter, a sister to her siblings, and an aunt to her many nephews and nieces. But if you were to ask her, she would tell you that her greatest joy was being a grandma. Geneva loved to read and always encouraged the ones around her to travel the written word. Whenever you saw her in her chair there was always a book close by with a tissue marking the page she was on.
Geneva not only enjoyed escaping in a book adventure but also taking adventures whether it be a camping trip with her husband or going back east to visit family. She always made sure that her family could count on her no matter the situation. She made frequent trips to Arizona before finally moving to see her grandchildren and celebrate their life achievements. There is no doubt that she loved all she encountered. Geneva always saw the best in people and was always willing to forgive. She believed that there was no room for hate in our hearts. Geneva was a kind gentle soul. An angel on earth as some would put it.
Geneva was predeceased by: her parents, Charles and Blanche Booth; her sisters, Sarah and Minnie; and her daughter, Jennifer.
She is survived by: her husband, Stuart Gregory; her sister, Brenda (Ronnie) Fry; her brother, David (Daphene) Booth; her grandchildren, Victoria (Scott) Johnson, Tristen (Tianna) Hernandez, Ashleigh (Rhett) Burk, and Vincent Wright; her great-grandchildren, Roni and Billy Johnson, along with her many nieces and nephews.
She would often mention that she did not want services when she passed. Geneva wanted people to continue to live their best life and enjoy the adventure. To honor her wishes the family will not be having any services. She asked that nobody send flowers but to donate to charities such as cancer research, Alzheimer's research, or a charity of your choosing.

Johnny Gonzales - April 11, 1956 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Safford)
Obituary Preview: Johnny Lucio Gonzales passed away April 27, 2024, after a courageous battle against cancer. He was born in Morenci on April 11, 1956, to Jose and Francis (Lucio) Gonzales.
He is preceded in death by: his parents, Jose and Francis; brothers, Joe Jr and Robert. He is survived by: his two sisters, Mary and Sylvia; brother, Antonio; his beloved daughter, Jonika; and two granddaughters, Markianah and Majestic.
Foremost the family would like to publicly thank Jonika and Robert Baker (nephew), for the care and comfort they provided John in his month-long journey on the road to eternal rest.
John grew up in a Clifton of days gone by, when kids rode their bikes all over town, played baseball in empty lots, hiking, fishing, and went swimming on hot summer days at the Clifton pool or the San Fran River. There was always something to do or somewhere to go. John graduated from Clifton High in 1974. He played basketball for the Trojans in his four years at CHS. After high school he went to work for Phelps Dodge, as did so many other young graduates. Several years later he felt he needed a change. He and several of his close friends went to St. Johns, Arizona, where SRP (Salt River Project) was opening a new coal generating station. He got the job and spent the next 41 years working for SRP. He retired in 2019.
He loved the high country, the cold winters, the snow, and the mild summers. He and his friends would spend countless hours chopping and cutting wood for the cold winter months. He would always say, “Nothing like a warm fire on a cold night,” and yes, with a cold beer in hand. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching and following his favorite pro and college teams. A die-hard Dallas Cowboy fan, like no other. John had a real passion for grilling. He loved outdoor cooking for a few friends or a large family gathering. May would say there was no one better. He would grill anything and everything. He would grill year round despite the weather. He once cooked steaks and burgers in the middle of a snowstorm, for an upcoming football playoff game. In the many years that followed, there were many Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas celebrations, birthdays, family gatherings and special events that John would be a big part of. His life was well lived, filled with happiness, joy and the love of family and friends. His memory will long live in the hearts and minds of all the lives he touched.
A public gathering for Johnny will take place Monday, May 6, 2024 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Vining Funeral Home's "Chapel of the Valley".

Trevor Sumner - October 28, 2002 - April 21, 2024

Departed: 04/21/2024 (Safford)
Obituary Preview: Trevor Lawrence Sumner, beloved son, brother, grandson, friend, and gentleman cowboy, went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 21, 2024, at the age of 21. Trevor is the son of Tim and Amber Sumner, of Duncan. He is survived by his parents and his siblings, Elissa (Sylas) Turner, Rachel, and Isaiah; grandparents Steve & Loralie Martin, Dean & Bonni Sumner, and Dianne Jones; and a large extended family. Trevor had accepted Jesus as his Savior and is now another cowboy in heaven.
Trevor spent most of his childhood enjoying country life in Duncan. From an early age, he loved all things outdoors: hunting, fishing, trucks, welding, and horses. Trevor was talented at leatherwork, creating custom tack, belts, wallets, sheaths, and more. His passion was working with horses, and he loved ranch work. His dream was to be a cowboy, and he became one of the best. He loved working various ranches and seeing different country, but did his longest stint at the O RO Ranch in Prescott. He was drawn there to work a wagon the old-fashioned way, on horseback, eating from the chuck wagon, and sleeping under the stars. It was the life he loved, and he was blessed to live it. Trevor was easy-going, funny, and loved with a big heart. He made friends everywhere he went; and no one could miss his well-worn hat. His last ride was on the Y6 Ranch in Mule Creek, NM on April 20th, where he was dragged by a horse while bringing in the cows with his good friends by his side.
A Celebration of Trevor's Life will be conducted Saturday morning, April 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at the Greenlee County Fairgrounds Arena in Duncan by Trevor's Grandfather, Pastor Steve Martin, of the First Southern Baptist Church of Duncan and Pastor Brad Boyd of the First Baptist Church of Duncan.
The family asks that those who plan to be in attendance come in 'cowboy casual' attire. Anyone who wants to bring their horse and ride as a tribute to Trevor during the closing song, the family would be honored to have you do so.

Robyn's adventurous spirit led her to a summer job at Mt. Rushmore following her senior year. It was there that she met her true love, Kevin Moore, and they knew their destinies were meant to be. Robyn and Kevin exchanged vows of eternal love and commitment in the MT Timpanogos LDS Temple on May 11, 2000.
While Robyn dedicated herself to her studies, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Wyoming in 2013, her primary focus remained on her role as a devoted, caring mother to her three cherished children. Her passion for social work shone brightly as she dedicated several years to the field before transitioning to pursue her heartfelt calling as an educator and teacher. Unfortunately, her journey was interrupted by unforeseen health challenges.
Despite facing undiagnosed illnesses, Robyn remained tenacious in her pursuit of answers, displaying immense courage and strength throughout her battle. Her unwavering spirit and determination serve as a testament to her remarkable character and resilience.
Though Robyn's physical presence may be gone, her legacy of resilience and compassion will continue to inspire and uplift us all. May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the light she brought into the world.

Betty is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has faithfully served in all the callings that she received. She and Elvin took their children to church with them and taught the gospel in their home by word and example. Betty loved to go to the Temple whenever she could. She has written personal Family History Stories including those of her siblings and herself. These stories will be a great benefit to her posterity as they read and learn about her life experiences shared therein. Betty will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know and love her.
Her survivors are: daughter-in-law, Carole Rae (Sutherland) Barney; and daughters, Connie Sue (married to Sherman Hal) Lloyd and Karla Elizabeth (married to James Ernest “Buster”) Smith; her sons, Boyd Dorrel ( married to Crystal Ann Wiggins) Barney, Lee Orin (married to Kristi Dettamanti) Barney, Kyle Elbridge (married to Patty Cotcamp) Barney; and son-in-law, Harold Damian Fowler; 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Then sharing their home with her and making sure she was taken care of until the very end, with the support of their family. We would also like to thank “Haven Home Health and Hospice” staff, who have helped our Mom, “Betty” through this difficult time in her life, and Vining Funeral Home for the great support they have extended in these difficult days after her passing.
