James Roger Murphy - June 17, 1946 - May 28, 2023

Departed: 05/28/2023 (Chula Vista)
Obituary Preview: James Roger Murphy (known to many as “Jim” or “Jimmy”), passed away the morning of Sunday, May 28, 2023, in Chula Vista, California, at the age of 76. He was born to Gertrude Catherine Donlon and John Anthony Murphy in Chicago, Illinois, on June 17, 1946. He was the third youngest of nine siblings -- six boys and three girls (Helen, Patsy, Dave, Jerry, Johnny, Mike, Jim, Monica and Kevin). The Murphy family moved from Chicago to Coronado in 1951. Of the “Murphy9”, Jim is survived by his brothers Jerry, Johnny and Kevin. He graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1964.
Jim married his wonderful wife, Valerie, in March 1982, making Valerie and her young son, John Wells, Jr., part of his life from then on. Jim and Valerie had two children thereafter, Rory James Murphy and Tamara Ann Liberty Murphy. Jim is survived by his wife, Valerie, his three children, John, Rory and Tamara, as well as numerous grandchildren that he adored immensely. For many years, decades even, he was notorious for wearing his Stetson cowboy hats and cowboy boots, along with the accoutrements that would accompany such attire. He even married his wife Valerie in an all green cowboy-style tuxedo.
His trade was elevator construction for around two decades, building elevators in many of the high-rise buildings in Downtown San Diego and even internationally, before being diagnosed with asbestos poisoning and retiring in his early 40s. His son, Rory, remembers him enthusiastically explaining to him how impressive the elevator system was at the Luxor in Las Vegas.
Jim was a recovering alcoholic who got sober in 1995 on his departed mother’s birthday, February 2. He celebrated 28 years of sobriety in February 2023. During the nearly three decades of being sober, he sponsored what is said to be hundreds of men at the South Bay Pioneer, helping in any way he could to guide them on their sobriety journey, and he was even a board member at the South Bay Pioneers for over a decade. He was well known for bringing his very own Thermos of Folgers coffee to AA meetings — being a serious and dedicated lifelong coffee drinker, he wasn’t willing to settle for subpar coffee. During one particular AA meeting, when being introduced to a “newcomer”, the newcomer responded to Jim during the introduction with “You’re THE Jim Murphy?” When someone gets to be referred to by a complete stranger as “The” in an enthusiastic and positive way, it probably means that person lived quite a life, and made quite an impression on those around them.
Later he spent much of his time volunteering at the Community Through Hope program, where he continued his ardor for helping those in need and received an award for 25 years of volunteering in Chula Vista.
For many years, his favorite outdoor hobby was golf, which he had to give up a few years ago as his health began to decline.
For those familiar with the television series That 70s Show, as a father Jim would be reminiscent of Red Forman according to his children —meaning very much a hard ass. Jim was also a fan of Sci-Fi, especially Star Trek The Next Generation and The X- Files — a passion which he passed on to his kids. Jim is greatly missed by his wife, kids, grandkids, relatives, friends, the countless people he impacted at the South Bay Pioneers and in the other volunteer work he did. We will always love with all our hearts, and will never forget “The Jim Murphy.”

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Patty Nguyen (age of 85), a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and cherished member of the Vietnamese community. Patty was born on February 7, 1938 in Saigon, Vietnam, one of seven children. She grew up with a strong sense of family and a passion for cooking.

Harold Robert Hall - February 07, 1935 - March 07, 2023

Departed: 03/07/2023 (Chula Vista)
Obituary Preview: HAROLD ROBERT “BOB” HALL February 7, 1935 – March 7, 2023
Harold Robert “Bob” Hall passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in Chula Vista, CA, at Fredericka Manor.
Born in Bakersfield, California, to Edward Earl and Ethel Mae (Butner) Hall, Bob grew up in Oildale, California, in a three-generation household with his four siblings, Harriet Elizabeth, Norman, Ellen, and Grace, his parents, and grandparents Robert Norman Hall and Grace Gilroy Hall.
Bob attended Standard School, Bakersfield High School (BHS), and (then-named) Bakersfield Junior College, transferring to the University of California in Berkeley (UCB) in his junior year. He received BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from UCB in 1956 and 1957, respectively, and a PhD degree in Electronic Engineering and Computer Science from UCB in 1966. In 1956, he received the UCB Thomas Claire McFarland Award in Electrical Engineering, and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was awarded scholarships in his senior year at BHS and his junior year at UCB, and a fellowship by the National Science Foundation for his first graduate year at UCB. His PhD thesis was on Nonlinear Electronic Networks; it described his research project that resulted in a general method for synthesizing nonlinear network transfer functions, for which there had been no known method. He also designed and implemented a Fortran software program for solving the parameters (voltages, currents) of nonlinear networks.
In his early employment, Bob designed and oversaw production of many Passive Acoustic-Frequency Filters and other magnetic-core components during the years 1957-1963 at Transonic, Inc. (Bakersfield), Circuitdyne Corp. (Pasadena and Laguna Beach), and Robertshaw Controls Co. (Anaheim). Subsequent to receiving a PhD degree, he was employed at the Navy Electronics Laboratory in San Diego, where he spent a number of years in computer modeling of undersea sound propagation for predicting sonar performance, and developed a new closed-form equation for predicting acoustic loss versus frequency. Over the next several years he served as a UNIX computer systems engineer. During that time, Bob designed and implemented a number of popular software systems for use by all personnel at the Laboratory, including pre-internet main-frame programs for email communication, and a telephone directory.
After retiring in 1995, Bob spent a number of years (pro bono) in website design and implementation for family, friends, and non-profit organizations, including personal websites, and websites for author Scott O’Dell, Friends of Ostomates Worldwide, the Ostomy Association of San Diego, the California State Association of Parliamentarians, the National Association of Parliamentarians, and some of its units. Implementing these websites and other computer software systems required him to develop expertise in many computer languages, including C, HTML, PERL, and PHP, which were all self-taught.
Bob has been a member of many societies, including several greek-letter college honor societies, and retained his membership in a number of organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Radio Relay League, the California Alumni Association, the San Diego Museum of Art, Phi Beta Kappa, the National Association of Parliamentarians, and the Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. He has held Amateur Radio License W6MGP since 1952, with Amateur Extra Class privileges over most of that time, through The National Association for Amateur Radio.
Perhaps Bob’s greatest accomplishment was his near six-decade marriage to best friend and beloved wife, TennieBee Hall. The couple met through their fathers, who were both active members of the Odd Fellows Lodge. However, they didn’t date until much later, marrying on February 20, 1965.
In addition to Bob’s professional impact, he believed greatly in the importance of education, social justice, and the health and wellness of underserved populations. Both he and TennieBee have been longtime, active members of Pacific Beach United Methodist Church. Together, they have supported many organizations, including Project Grace and the UCSD Free Clinics. They have also helped many family members and friends over the years in their pursuit of higher education.
Bob is survived by his wife TennieBee, sisters Harriet Elizabeth Hall (O’Dell) and Grace Diane Yates (Chuck), brother-in-law David Salle, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Edward Earl and Ethel Mae (Butner) Hall, his brother Norman Edward Hall, sister-in-law Gloria Thurmond Hall, sister Ellen Mae Salle, and brother-in-law Scott O’Dell.

Felix Edward Dugger - February 02, 1929 - January 11, 2023

Departed: 01/11/2023 (Chula Vista)
Obituary Preview: Felix Dugger passed away peacefully in his sleep on 1/11/2023, in Chula Vista where he was born and raised. He lived in San Diego his entire life, He is pre-deceased by his loving wife Patricia, and is survived by his son Dale and his granddaughter Ashlynne.
He married his one true love (she had to ask him!) and they were very happily married for 56 years. His next true love was the SDSU Aztecs basketball program, where he and four of his best buddies had season tickets for over twenty five years. He was also a member of the 1812 Elks for 35 years.
Both he and his wife Patricia travelled extensively their entire lives together, both domestically and internationally. In the late 1970's they bought a brand new, custom built motorhome and drove it everywhere they could think of. They literally drove that thing into the ground.
Felix loved watching all sports, but again, his second love was the SDSU Aztec basketball program. He was a manager on the team when he was a student, and followed them for the rest of his life. Among his highlights of watching them live was seeing a young man named Kawhi Leonard develop his game as an Aztec, who went on to win NBA championships on two different teams.
He loved to play poker, and apparently was pretty good at it. He claimed to have "pokered" his way through college and the Air Force, and for many years regularly met up with a group of friends to play a "friendly" game, usually leaving them very frustrated by the end of the evening.
He loved to say that he fought the Korean War in Germany, but that four year service allowed him to take advantage of the GI bill, and became the first Dugger to graduate from college.  He eventually became a college professor at Southwestern Community College in Bonita, where he was a pioneering professor teaching some of the first computer programming classes ever.
Felix and Patricia were happily married for 56 years, and they were truly best friends with each other the entire time.
Dad will be interred with full military honors on what would have been his 94th birthday. I think he would appreciate that.
Services will be held on Thursday 2/2/2023 at Miramar National Cemetery at 12:30pm.
His celebration of life will be held in the house he grew up in at 217 F Street, Chula Vista CA.
We will be serving all kinds of German food, which was his favorite.

Nancy Kathleen Youness - May 26, 1944 - April 05, 2022

Departed: 04/05/2022 (Chula Vista)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Kathleen (Ward) Youness passed away on April 5, 2022, in Chula Vista, California, of COVID-related complications. She was 77 years old.
Nancy was born in St. Joseph, Michigan, on May 26, 1944. She lived in Memphis, Michigan, in the summer and in Costa Brava, Baja California, Mexico, during the winter.
Ironically, she grew up on California Street in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, the third child of George and Inez Ward. She graduated from South Lake High School and then married and started a family shortly afterward.
She deeply loved and fiercely defended her family, raised three sons, and had three stepchildren through her union with Randall Youness, the love of her life. She also had nine grandchildren and a beloved dog named Dino. Nancy and Randy celebrated 25 years of marriage shortly before her passing.
Nancy lived nearly her entire life in Michigan. She and Randy called a restored Victorian house their home for two decades, and Nancy loved its period interior décor and tending to its flowers and garden during the warmer months. She operated the home as a bed-and-breakfast for a short time, welcoming guests needing a local place to stay. She and Randy spent summer evenings driving their vintage 1966 Ford Mustang across the rural stretches surrounding their small town.
Winters took their toll, and in recent years Nancy and Randy began spending the colder months on the Pacific coast of Baja California. Here, they found a welcoming community, quickly made friends, and enjoyed beautiful sunsets from their patio overlooking the ocean.
Nancy loved traveling, trying new things, and living life to the fullest. As a three-time cancer survivor, she knew how important it is to enjoy life while you have it to enjoy.

Martin Lee Brandt - October 06, 1951 - October 02, 2021

Departed: 10/02/2021 (Chula Vista)
Obituary Preview: Obituary Martin Lee Brandt
Martin Brandt died on October 2, 2021, following complications from cancer surgery. Throughout the summer of 2021, Martin was recovering from surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his jaw. He died in saving faith in Jesus Christ and is no longer struggling.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, 866 Imperial Beach Blvd in Imperial Beach, CA. Following the service, a meal will be served at St. James to enable sharing and expressions of sympathy and comfort. He will be interred at Rosecrans National Cemetery at 1700 Cabrillo Memorial Drive in San Diego.
Martin Lee Brandt, son of Earl and Leona (Hagge) Brandt, was born in Hawarden, Iowa on October 6, 1951. He was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, in Ireton, Iowa, on October 21, 1951. He grew up on the family farm west of Ireton, Iowa. He was confirmed at St. Paul’s on April 11th of 1965 with his Confirmation verse being 2 Corinthians 5:15: “And He (Christ) died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” He was a 1969 graduate of West Sioux Community Schools. After attending Sioux Empire College at Hawarden, Iowa, Martin enlisted in the United States Navy in February of 1972. He served his country for the next 26 years primarily as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He achieved the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer prior to his retirement in 1998. While in the Navy he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Applications and Networking, and a Master’s degree in Information Technology Education. Highlights of his Navy career include serving on the America, Midway, and Independence aircraft carriers, and tours of Southeast Asia. This enabled his wife, Yasuko, to spend time with her family in Japan. He was discharged from the Navy in January of 1998.
On October 4 of 1980, Martin was united in marriage to Yasuko Yamashita in San Diego. They were blessed with an adopted daughter, Crystal Leona Brandt who joined the family in May of 1987 when she was about 7 months old. Martin, Yasuko, and Crystal always had dogs of various sizes, especially Shih tzu and German Shepherds. Martin and Yasuko enjoyed taking drives up to Julian at least once a month, taking the small dog. Martin loved sitting down as a family to watch TV or discuss the days’ events. When he wasn't doing Scouts activities, he was at home tinkering and fixing things, between naps.
Following his discharge from the Navy on Jan. 31, 1998, Martin worked as an Information Technology Specialist for companies that served the Navy. More important than his paying job was his volunteer work at his church, St. James’ Lutheran Church, with his almost daily efforts at the church preschool serving both teachers and students. “Mr. Martin, Mr. Martin” were the words he likely heard 20 times each day while on the playground.
Martin was the founder of both the Cub Scout and Boy Scout Pack of Troop 866 of St. James Lutheran Church. He was active in many pack activities, camping outings, recruitment, fundraising and administrative activities. He also utilized his woodworking skills to provide items needed by the Scouts. He received the award of Merit from the South Bay District in 2016 and the Silver Beaver Award on Feb. 29, 2020. At the time of his death, he was still serving as “Popcorn Kernel” for Troop 866.
Martin and his family enjoyed traveling in their motorhome to visit family members in Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, and South Dakota. They also opened their home for family visits to the San Diego area. In August of 2017, all five Brandt siblings and extended family from 5 states were together in the Imperial Beach area. Highlights of the trip were Martin giving a personal tour of the USS Midway Museum, having served aboard that aircraft carrier before it was retired; and a San Diego Padres/Minnesota Twins baseball game, since the Twins are a Midwest favorite. Martin’s sister Mary recently visited for the month of July and they enjoyed a harbor cruise and frequent walks with two energetic German Shepherd pups. Martin was an all-around handy guy and joked about his frequent trips to Home Depot.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Debra Larson Brandt. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Yasuko Brandt and daughter Crystal Brandt; siblings Rev. Edward Brandt (Eileen) of Meridian, Idaho, Rev. David Brandt (Bridget) of Grinnell, Iowa, Mary Brandt of Sioux Falls, SD, and Arlene Brandt-Jenson (Bob Jenson) also of Sioux Falls, SD; six nieces and nephews and 13 grand nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
