Obituary Preview: Norma Rae (Hammond) Howell of Springport passed into the arms of Jesus Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at the age of 96. Her children had the honor of caring for her at home in her final days with the assistance of Hospice of Lansing. Norma was born September 14, 1927 in Albion, Michigan, the daughter of Ira and Edna (Haight) Hammond of Springport. She spent her childhood in Springport, graduating from Springport High School in 1945.
Norma met the handsome Don Howell at the University of Michigan where she was attending as the first scholarship recipient from Springport High School. They married May 29, 1947, and were blessed with 67 years of marriage before Don passed away in 2015. They have five children Daryl (Margie) Howell of South Lyon, MI; Donna (David) Trumble of Georgetown, TX; Jim (Sandy) Howell of Springport, MI; Tim (Kathy McManus) Howell of Gainesville, GA and Mark (Cathy) Howell of Eaton Rapids, MI.
Norma and Don were blessed with 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by two siblings: Lois (Gene) Kaniecki of Parkville, MD and Jean Sykes of Litchfield, MI. She was predeceased by siblings John Hammond, Alice Turner, Bill Hammond and George Hammond.
Norma served the Lord for many years as a Sunday School teacher, most recently at Holt Christian Church.
The family will receive family and friends at Vickers Funeral Home, Springport on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Services will be held at Vickers on Friday, May 17, 2024, at noon with visitation one hour before.

Ronald is survived by his wife, Luzcilyn Budd; children, Keith (MaryJo) Budd, Gaylene Budd, Vincent (Bridget) Budd, Timothy (April) Budd, Marissa Budd, and Tyron Budd; sister, Phyllis (Larry) Sandusky; nieces and nephews, Calvin (Ruth) Rutz, Cheryl (Mark) Ellenwood, David (Danna) Rutz, and Connie (Doug) Kiessling, and many grandchildren.

David DuWayne Dack - September 16, 1940 - April 10, 2024

Obituary Preview: David DuWayne Dack, age 83, of Springport, Michigan, went to be with the Lord on April 10, 2024, in the loving care of Henry Ford Hospice House in Jackson, Michigan. Dave was born on September 16, 1940, the son of Wayne and Rosemary Dack, who have preceded him in death. He grew up on his parent’s farm in Parma, Michigan, spending countless days working in the fields with his mom, dad, and sister. After graduating from Springport High School in 1958, he attended Michigan State University for short courses in Agriculture. His love for farming continued throughout his life as a hobby farmer and raising beef cows for his freezer. In 1959, he married Patricia and they shared 64 great years of marriage. Dave was a hard worker who in addition to caring for his family and farm, worked as a machinist for over 50 years, retiring from Main and Company in Jackson in 2002. After his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking in his shop and helping his grandkids care for and raise their fair animals. Dave also enjoyed bowling, spending time outside whether he was mowing his yard, deer hunting, or fishing, and always enjoyed a nice slow drive through the countryside….very slow!
Dave remained an avid supporter of his community and his alma maters – Springport Schools and Michigan State University. He was a proud supporter of the Springport Sports Boosters and volunteered many hours and watched many sporting events over the years. He loved Michigan State Athletics and enjoyed watching every football and basketball game he could. He also enjoyed watching his grandkids grow and attending all of their various school activities. In addition to the schools, Dave was a member of the Springport-Masonic Lodge, Springport-Sons of the American Legion, Albion Elks, and Campbell Cemetery Association.
Dave was a great family man and friend. He spent many weekends and trips to his cottage up north at Farwell with his family and friends, creating great memories for everyone. He enjoyed spending many days playing cards with his Card Group of friends and his Euchre Club.
Dave will be remembered as being loving, funny, loyal, and caring and was a believer in God.
In addition to his parents, Dave is preceded in death by his infant sons, Duane Paul and David Wayne Dack; brother-in-law, Terry Twiss; and son-in-law, Craig Ward. He is survived by his loving wife Patricia “Pat” Dack; children, Penny Ward and John Dack; grandchildren: Amber Halstead, Cara Ward, Mac (Ashley) Ward, Paul (Jenessa) Dack, Bradly (Jessica) Dack, Austin Ward; and great-grandchildren: Cassidy, Aubrey, Kennedy, Callie, Addison, River, Esme’, Jack, and Henry. Dave is also survived by his sister, Ruthann Twiss, and, nephew, DuWayne (Dawn) Twiss.

He was born to Eugene Edwin Hubbard and Vanessa Conley who preceded him in death along with his son, Ricky Lee Hubbard, and daughter Vicki Taber.
He is survived by loving wife, Christine Hubbard of Homer, Michigan; daughter, Samantha Hubbard, of Albion, Michigan; stepchildren, Jodi Stokely (Paul Esic) of Albion, Michigan, Clarence and Jennifer Stokely of Jackson, Michigan, Robert and Carrie Stokely, of Jackson, Michigan, and Steven and Amanda Stokely, of Albion, Michigan; as well as many nieces, nephews, grand babies and great grand babies.
Raymond attended school in Albion, Michigan, his hometown, before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy for three years. Upon his honorable discharge he gained recognition for his skills doing body work on cars. Raymond was a longtime member of Albion Eagles #1265, where he made numerous friends over the years. He spent several years as an over-the-road truck driver and then at Calhoun Foundry Company. In his free time, Terry enjoyed fishing, making crafts, and playing with his dog, Queen. He also enjoyed spending time with others whether it was listening to music with Babe or hanging out with his brothers.
He is survived by his son, Scottie Dean Allen of Florida; grandchildren, Joshua Rusiecki of Albion, and Dallas Allen Clark of Robeline, Louisiana; siblings: John and Carolyn Eldridge of Albion, Laurie and Glen Moore of Albion, William and Zelmaglee Tackett of Homer, Corlis and Teri Allen of Parma, Jim and Paula Allen of Homer, Richard and Judy Allen of Albion, and sister-in-law, Joyce Tackett of Albion; several special cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

He met the love of his life, Tammy, and they married on August 11, 2001. Joe loved to build things. If you gave Joe a hammer, wood, and some nails he could make just about anything. Joe was a very kind, loving, and caring man. If you knew him, you loved him. His wife Tammy and daughter Michaela were his world.

Obituary Preview: Charlotte Grace Ewers, age 8, of Albion, Michigan, passed away on February 14, 2024 at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Charlotte was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on June 3, 2015, the daughter of Gabe and Ratchel Ewers. She loved attending Springport Elementary school and enjoyed spending time with her friends, which included many teachers and staff. Charlotte was very loving, showed great patience, and was wise beyond her years. She enjoyed playing Legos, singing karaoke, and had a passion for music. She loved being outside, playing in the sprinkler or in the rain, and cruising around the yard in her jeep. She also enjoyed the time spent cooking with her dad. Charlotte will be remembered as being strong, spicy, very direct, and full of energy. She was very entertaining with her sense of humor and was always wearing a smile.
Charlotte is survived by her parents, Gabe and Ratchel Ewers; siblings: Abigail Fast, Aidan Fast, Cadence Ewers, and her four-legged brother, Toby; and grandparents: Richard Kopulos, Michael and Susan Speer, Jim and Kim Ewers, and Joe and Brenda Piggott. She is also survived by her great-grandmother, Barb Gonzalez; aunts and uncles: Tiffany (Adam) Good, Troy (Laura) Kopulos, Amanda (Frank) Pastor, Casey (Landon) Zontz, Jamie (Jesse) Vuille, Nick Ewers (Chelsey Osborne), Jeremy (Casey) Speer, and Chad (Sunday) Speer; and numerous cousins and close friends. Charlotte is preceded in death by her grandmother, Patricia Kopulos; great-grandfather, Guadalupe Gonzalez; and uncle, Richie Kopulos.

He attended Springport High School before proudly serving his country in the Army National Guard. On May 25, 1985, he married Barbara Kay Snipes. Although his heart was in farming, he also worked for McGraw Edison and Mead Brothers Excavating. He loved farming including working around his pond and riding his UTV around the farm. Richard also enjoyed collecting and restoring antique tractors. He loved all animals especially his pets, Rascal and Jake.
Richard is preceded in death by his father, Carl F. Dittis; mother, Irma B. Stephens; brothers, Howard Gould and Robert Dittis; and sister, Shirley Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Barbara Dittis; daughter, Diane Wonders; grandchildren, Sara Wonders and Lauren (Bryan) Benschoter; and great-grandchildren, Bree and Blake. Richard is also survived by his brother, William (Elizabeth) Dittis; and sister, Betty Allen.

Obituary Preview: Donna May Sumrall, age 68, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away in the comfort of her home on January 21, 2024. Donna was born on March 19, 1955 in Marion, Indiana. She graduated from Kellogg Community College in 1992 with an Associates degree in Nursing. Donna worked as a Registered Nurse at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan, for 28 years before her retirement in 2017. Nursing was more than a career for Donna, it was her passion in life and she dedicated herself to helping others all throughout her life. She loved playing Bingo, reading, going to the orchard with her family and working on crossword puzzles. Donna was deeply devoted to her family and took great joy in her grandchildren who filled up her final years with lots of laughter.
Donna is preceded in death by her mother and step-father, Beverly Jo (Bockmier) and Charles Kenneth Hill; father, Carl Leroy Leech; and siblings, Catherine Moore and Joseph Leech. She is survived by her children, Glennda (Michael) Smothers and Elizabeth Erskine (Nate Kempf); grandchildren: Elijah, Roselyn, Ethan, AJ, Charlie, and Logan; and brother, Carl (Kathee) Leech. Donna is also survived by her nephews: Erich (Laura) Leech, Jason (Carmen) Leech, Evan Leech, and Tony Erskine; 3 great-nephews; 2 great-nieces; and all those she welcomed into her home and treated as if they were her own kids – especially her daughters’ friends who affectionately referred to her as “Auntie”.
A celebration of Donna's life will be held on Sunday, Feb 11th, 2024, at the Hickory Hills Village Clubhouse located at 10450 6 Mile Rd, Lot 131, in Battle Creek, Michigan from 2 – 6 pm. Gordon "Gordie" Everett Newsome - October 13, 1955 - January 19, 2024

Obituary Preview: Gordon “Gordie” Everett Newsome, 68, of Nevada, formerly of Marshall, Michigan passed away January 19, 2024. He was born October 13, 1955, in Albion, Michigan to Feddie and Emily (Scott) Newsome who have preceded him in death. Gordie grew up in Marshall, Michigan and graduated from Marshall High School and went on to pursue a career as a supervisor in the newspaper business, he dedicated 35 years to the industry before retiring. He lived the majority of his life in Nevada, a place he loved and called home.
Gordie had a passion for yard sales, spending weekends exploring hidden treasures in search for the perfect find. He could often be found in his garage tinkering on cars, especially Mopar vehicles, if he wasn’t working on his cars then you could find him behind the wheel in a quarter mile race. He often enjoyed trying his luck at the local casino. Amidst his various interests, his greatest joy came from spending time with his daughter and grandkids.
Gordie was a one-of-a-kind man, who left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have met him.
In addition to his parents Gordie was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years Georgia Newsome; and his second wife, Molly Newsome. He is survived by his daughter, Amanda E. (Derek G.) Linsday (Newsome); grandchildren: Bree O. Timpe, Keiana S. Timpe, Keith I. Timpe, MaKayLey R. Linsday, and Molly M. Linsday; in addition to many cousins. Obituary Preview: Bernello Bud Lake, age 87, of Duck Lake, Michigan, passed away on January 14, 2024, in the care of Henry Ford Jackson Hospital from complications of Parkinson’s Disease. Bud was born in Brookfield Township on December 5, 1936, the son of Donald and Frances (Seckler) Lake, who have preceded him death. Outside of the time he served in the US Air Force, which included a few years in Japan, Bud spent his entire life at Duck Lake. He grew up in his parent’s store, Duck Lake Grocery, and after his marriage on October 12, 1957, to Sue Anne Davis, made their home at the lake. Bud worked as a Tool & Die maker at Oldsmobile and in his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, working on his tree farm, and playing euchre. He was very involved in his community including the VFW, “neighborhood watch”, and was a founding member of S.A.F.E. (Springport Area Foundation for Education). Bud was a real character and will be remembered with laughter, joy, and tears by all that knew him.
Along with his parents, Bud is preceded in death by his grandson, Brett Lake. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Sue Lake; children: Donald (Wendy) Lake, Darcy Drake (Jeff Sims), and Steven (Sue) Lake; grandchildren: Donald Ryan (Erica) Lake, Carla (Chris) Lafond, Trent (Lauren Brummeler) Drake, Shalee (Ben Youngs) Drake, and Stevie “Punky” Lake; and great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Olivia, Stella, Parker, Paxton, and Porter. He is also survived by his caregiver of many years, Beth Rottler.

Obituary Preview: Randall Kelly Timberman SR. "Randy" was born on 02/12/1955 in Concord, Michigan, to Ruby and Carl Timberman, who have preceded him in death. He was a lifelong resident of Albion, Michigan. Randy graduated from Albion Senior High School and after working for a time, he enlisted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Germany, upon returning he started his career at Decker Manufacturing where he worked until his retirement in 2018. Randy enjoyed bowling, golf, playing cards, casino gambling and his beloved Detroit Lions. He loved his family and was especially proud of his sons and grandchildren.
He leaves behind two sons Randall Timberman ll and Eric (Jessica) Timberman; three grandchildren: Raja Arnold-Timberman, Xavier and Isabella Timberman; siblings: Joyce Tackett, Dolores (Wayne) Stacy, Don (Jodie) Timberman and Linda (Todd) Morgan; sister-in-law, Mary Helton; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Harold Helton Jr., and brother-in-law, Gene Tackett.

Carolyn had a special affinity for nurturing house plants, earning her the affectionate title of having "two green thumbs." Beyond her domestic pursuits, Carolyn was a true DIY enthusiast, wielding tools with skill and passion to refurbish various projects. She reveled in the challenge of transforming thrift store finds and yard sale treasures into unique and charming home decor. Her creative spirit knew no bounds, and her home reflected the beauty that could be found in the simplest of things.
However, it was Carolyn's humor that truly set her apart. She had a remarkable ability to infuse laughter into every corner of her life. Hattie and Mac had 4 children: Kevin Bentley, Gary Bentley, Brad (Jennifer) Bentley, and Tanya (Stacy) Jackson. She has 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She instilled her beliefs and values into her children and grandchildren.
We sorrow in the loss and rejoice in knowing she is in Heaven.
Hattie was met in Heaven by her mother and father; 8 brothers and sisters; husband of 52 years, Mac Bentley; and granddaughter, Adilynn Caroline Jackson.

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, several brothers and sisters, and his granddaughter Hailey Konkle. He is survived by his wife, Mary Cundiff; daughters: Angela (Harley) Robinson, Samantha Konkle (Jimmy Allen), and Geneva Cundiff, all of Homer, Michigan; grandchildren: Kevin (Autumn), Zachary (Shyanne), Aubrie, Marissa, Chloe, Paige, Harley, Georgia, and Danica; and great-grandchildren, Ava and Mason. Pal loved to sing karaoke and host her Friday night bonfires. Pal was also a talented artist, and her paintings were coveted by family and friends.

Gerald was born on June 26, 1954, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, the son of Warren and Marilyn Oberlin who have preceded him in death. He was a jack of all trades and worked in welding, roofing, and as an auto mechanic. Gerald married his loving wife, Kim, and they shared 39 years of marriage before her passing in 2022. He loved anything outdoors and tinkering with anything with an engine. He merged those passions into his “other wife”, Black Magic, his beloved Dune Buggy, and they spent many hours riding the Michigan sand dunes. He also loved mud bogging, bracket racing, drag racing, and lawn mower racing with Outlaw Raceway. When he felt like slowing down, he enjoyed the quiet of hunting and fishing, watching action movies, and singing his favorite songs (just not very well). In his younger years, he played softball for local teams. Gerald loved to make people laugh and although he enjoyed hearing or telling a good joke, practical jokes were his favorite, and no one was safe from his hijinks. He was an unofficial employee of the Springport C-Store where he held the counter down while chatting and joking with everyone. Gerald was generous and would give you the shirt off his back, even if it was missing the sleeves, and was willing to drop everything to help a friend. Although he was not a hugger, you knew he loved you through his actions. He loved his family, enjoyed family get-togethers, and will be remembered as being a loving husband and great father and grandfather.
Along with his parents and wife, Gerald is preceded in death by his mother and father-in-law, Sam and Phyllis Gillett, and brother-in-law, Denny (Sandy) Gillett. He is survived by his sons: Jerry (Jessica) Oberlin, Jamie (Sarah) Oberlin, and Patrick (Brandi Fiser) Oberlin; bonus children, Scottie Catt and Lacy Osborn; grandchildren: Breanna (Chris), Brian, Dewey, RiRi, and Wyatt; bonus grandchildren: Dakota, Jayden, and Millie; and great-grandchildren, Baylee and Rylee. There are no words to describe Bud as he had a personality that was larger than life. He was always there to help whether he knew you or not. Bud loved taking care of his family was a loving father and partner. He was the rock of the family and provided them comfort like a security blanket.
Bud is preceded in death by his father Russell. He will be dearly missed by his partner of 33 years, Christina; son, Buddy Jr; mother, Becky; and brothers, Russ Whitaker and Lonnie Whitaker.
