Nancy Kowalski - August 12, 1947 - May 11, 2024

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Grosse Pointe Park)
Obituary Preview: Nancy Kowalski died on May 11, 2024, at Grosse Pointe Beaumont Hospital under the loving care of Heart-to-Heart Hospice. She succumbed to post-surgical complications after a valiant effort toward recovery.
Nancy was born in Detroit on August 12, 1947 to the late Edward Pabian and Anna Pabian (Kaminski), and attended parochial schools in Detroit. She is survived by her beloved brother, Paul. She attended Marygrove College before transferring to Marquette University (Milwaukee), earning an undergraduate degree in journalism. Her professional career began at Parke Davis as a proofreader, before becoming a writer and editor for various publications put out by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Providence Hospital, Providence Park Hospital, St. John Hospital, St. John corporate, Grosse Pointe Woods, and Brophy. She primarily worked in employee communications, preparing intra-organization periodicals.
Nancy married Gregory Kowalski in 1973, and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2023. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two children, Paul and David. She and her husband raised their sons in Grosse Pointe for 45 years, moving only once within the Grosse Pointe community (a distance of ten blocks). Nancy and her husband first attended Queen of Peace in Harper Woods before becoming 45 year members of St. Paul on the Lake in Grosse Pointe Farms. Nancy and Gregory were life-long residents of Southeast Michigan foregoing out of state promotions, to remain close to their extended family. She and her husband firmly believed that their children would benefit from a close relationship with grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Lovers of the theater, Gregory and Nancy were subscribers to the Fisher Theater for a half century, and would have started their 52nd season this year.
Nancy enjoyed decades-long friendships with her weekly "breakfast" ladies, spending their mornings supporting, consoling, and uplifting each other. These and other cherished friendships were at the core of her being and were valued as much as family members. Believing that friends and family relationships make people better, she lived out a line from one of her favorite musicals, Wicked: "Because I knew you, I have been changed for good." As she was bettered by those relationships, all those who knew Nancy have been changed for the better.
Visitation will be held for family and friends on Wednesday, May 15th from 4:00-8:00pm with a 7pm vigil service at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. Charles Robert Rutherford - February 14, 1929 - May 11, 2024

Departed: 05/11/2024 (Grosse Pointe Park)
Obituary Preview: Charles Robert "Charlie" Rutherford, a man of faith and immeasurable kindness, passed away peacefully at home in Grosse Pointe Park, MI, on May 11, 2024, at the age of 95. Born in Toledo, OH, on February 14, 1929, Charlie was a beacon of friendship and selflessness throughout his remarkable life. His legacy was forged by his unwavering faith; his commitment to family, church and country; and a career that bridged the realms of engineering, law and military service.
Growing up on Toledo's east side, Charlie was the 8th of 10 children and the last to pass. He attended Good Shepherd Catholic School, which was across the street from his family's three-bedroom house at 539 Clark Street. He attended Morrison R. Waite High School, playing sports and working as a roofer, railroad worker, and most proudly as batboy with the Toledo Mud Hens. Some 50 years after graduation, Waite honored him with an alumnus of the year award. Charlie graduated early to enlist in the U.S. Army towards the end of World War II, where he visited Japan and later served in the Army of Occupation in Korea as a military policeman. When he finished his enlistment, he took advantage of the GI Bill to enroll at the University of Detroit. He joined the campus ROTC and earned a degree in mechanical engineering in 1953.
While working as an engineer, Charlie also taught engineering at U-D during the day, while in the evening attending U-D Law School (receiving an alumnus of the year award 60 years after his 1957 graduation). He found time to attend Bill McGowan's Umpire School in Florida and became a certified professional baseball umpire, working minor league baseball games in the Midwest. Charlie also enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Reserves and served as a Judge Advocate General. In 1985, he retired as a Full Bird Colonel, shortly after receiving the Legion of Merit honor, awarded for outstanding service and seventh in the order of precedence of all U.S. military awards.
Through a venerable, six-decade legal career, Charlie practiced Intellectual Property Law, most recently as a partner with Dykema Gossett. His leadership extended to multiple professional associations. He served as a president of the Detroit Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and as a member, president, and chair of multiple sections of the State Bar of Michigan. He was a fellow for the American Bar Association and the Michigan State Bar Foundation, where he also served as a trustee and past president.
Beyond his professional life, Charlie's civic engagement and cultural contributions were profound. A life member of the NAACP, he held pivotal roles in organizations such as the Legal Aid and Defenders Association, the Metropolitan Youth Symphony, the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society, and the Detroit Rotary Club. He was a founding board member of Loyola High School in Detroit and a charter member of the President's Cabinet at the University of Detroit Mercy.
His commitment to enhancing the lives of others was unwavering, an endeavor he undertook with his beloved wife, Patricia Mary Rutherford, by his side. An avid Detroit Tigers fan, he was even more so a fan of the University of Detroit Mercy Titans Men's Basketball team. He was a Titans season ticket holder for more than 70 years, likely a UDM record and maybe even for the NCAA.
Charlie's family was the cornerstone of his life. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by his loving son, John Anthony Rutherford, and predeceased by his beloved son, Charles R. Rutherford Jr. His role as a husband, father, and friend was characterized by an unfailing friendliness and selflessness that inspired all who knew him.
As someone who found solace and strength in his faith, Charlie relished singing in the church choir at St. Clare of Montefalco and was an active member of the Archdiocese of Detroit's Cardinal's Club. His life was a testament to the sentiment expressed by St. Francis of Assisi: "For it is in giving that we receive." Charlie's legacy embodies this principle, as his life was truly about giving to others.
Charlie Rutherford was not merely a man of achievements and titles; he was a symbol of integrity, a mentor to many, and a friend to all. His legacy, etched in the countless lives and institutions he touched, will continue to inspire generations to come.
Visitation will take place Monday, June 3rd from 4-8pm at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. Funeral Tuesday, June 4th; Instate 12 Noon until the time of Mass, 1:00pm, at Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church, 629 E. Jefferson, Detroit. Committal service with military honors, Wednesday, June 5th, 1:00pm, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.

Florence Edgar Seltzer - July 20, 1935 - April 26, 2024

Departed: 04/26/2024 (Grosse Pointe Park)
Obituary Preview: Florence E. Seltzer died on April 26, 2024, at Grosse Pointe Beaumont Hospital under the loving care of Heart-to-Heart Hospice. She is predeceased by her husbands Jack Edgar (1975) and Frederick W. Seltzer (2000). She is survived by her three children: John R. Edgar, Susan Frances Edgar, Sharon (Doug) McMaster, her grandchildren Nichole McMaster, and Ian McMaster, and her sister Judy (Bob) Jamieson of Greenwich, CT, ten nieces and nephews, several grand nieces, and nephews, and just a few great grand nieces and nephews. Florence was preceded in death by her sister Lorraine Weber.
Florence E. Seltzer was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 20, 1935, to Mary and Andrew Bilah. She attended Detroit Public Schools where she was active in the music program as a string bass player, and she graduated in 1953 from Cooley High School. Florence continued her education with extension courses from Wayne State University. She did not finish her college degree, but Florence had an enthusiastic respect for education, insisting that her daughters live away at state universities and pursue advanced degrees.
During high school, Florence worked at the 5 and Dime store as a cashier. She then took a secretarial position at Campbell-Ewald Advertising Agency until the early 1960s, when she became a full-time homemaker. But even as a young mother, Florence found time to be a member of the Woman’s Symphony, lugging her string bass to rehearsals in the evenings. After being widowed in 1975, Florence worked for a company that provided signage for NBD Banks all over the metro Detroit area, Kelly Services, Welcome Wagon of Grosse Pointe, Draper’s Furniture, and eventually she was known as the “Hallmark Lady” at Park Pharmacy in Grosse Pointe Park, where she worked side-by-side her second husband, Fred Seltzer who was the pharmacist and owner in partnership. In election years, people would see Florence at Monteith Elementary School as an election poll worker.
A 52-year resident of Grosse Pointe, Florence was involved in numerous organizations around the area. She was the proudest of her work with Grosse Pointe Rotary on the Sunshine Committee and Grosse Pointe Memorial Church as a member of the Caring Committee. Upon initially moving to Grosse Pointe, Florence was a volunteer with the Grosse Pointe Symphony, the Belle Isle Conservatory, St. John’s Hospital, Grosse Pointe Newcomers, Cottage Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary, and the Grosse Pointe Woman’s Association where she was elected secretary. An avid New York Times reader and crossword enthusiast, Florence was a 1000-piece White Mountain puzzles aficionado and fan of HGTV and the Food Network. Once Florence turned 80, she became interested in watching sports other than golf; she cheered for Michigan and Michigan State football and basketball, Red Wings hockey, and she genuinely enjoyed a good Lions game. She attended her first Red Wings game when she was in her mid-80s and even made it on the Jumbo-Tron! Some of Florence’s happiest moments were when she was travelling with Fred. They globetrotted with Grand Circle Travel to Alaska and various countries in Europe. It was not May without the Rotary Convention at Mackinaw Island, and they also toured the United States recreationally and for National Association of Retail Druggists Conventions. Florence continued her love of travel after Fred’s passing, venturing to multiple Countries including Australia! Bishop Thomas Gumbleton - January 26, 1930 - April 04, 2024

Departed: 04/04/2024 (Grosse Pointe Park)
Obituary Preview: Bishop Thomas "Tom" Gumbleton was a beacon of hope to so many around the world. He was a man whose life was a testament to the power of faith and an example of unwavering commitment to justice.
Born on January 26,1930, in the family home on Manor in Detroit, Tom leaves a legacy of love and service. He passed away on April 4, 2024.
Son of the late Helen and Vincent Gumbleton, and brother to Sr. Irene Gumbleton, IHM, Tom was a cherished sibling in a vibrant family that included his late sister Loretta Grace and late brothers Vincent, Gerrard, Raymond, John, James, and Daniel. His life was further enriched by the affection of numerous devoted nieces and nephews who looked up to their Uncle Tom as a source of wisdom and kindness.
Tom's journey of learning and spiritual growth began at Epiphany Grade School and continued through Sacred Heart Seminary for high school and college. He studied theology at St. John Major Seminary and was ordained a priest on June 2, 1956. He received his Doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, Italy. This foundation of education prepared him for his nearly 70 years of ministry.
He began as a parish priest, served as Assistant Chancellor and then Vice-Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Detroit, and, in 1968, became the youngest bishop in the United States at age 38. After service in several parishes, he concluded his role as pastor with nearly 24 years at St. Leo Church in Detroit.
In addition to parish ministry and service as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit, Tom travelled throughout the world responding to requests to accompany people in crisis, especially in situations calling for human rights advocacy, nonviolence, and justice. His passion for justice led him to serve as a co-founder, board member or advisory committee member of over 50 organizations in Detroit, the US and abroad.
Throughout his decades of ministry, he responded to the cries of the poor, the ostracized, the disenfranchised, and the suffering. In doing so, he experienced his own transformation.
Beyond his formal responsibilities, Tom had many other interests. Known as a competitive and determined athlete, particularly during his hockey and tennis-playing days, he also had a deep love for reading – a hobby that nourished his mind and soul. A true Detroit sports fan, he celebrated and commiserated with the highs and lows of his beloved teams, especially the Tigers.
It was in his pastoral role, however, that he is best remembered for touching lives through his homilies and pastoral care. Tom inspired those around him to recognize their own call to love one another as God has first loved us. He challenged each person to build a world where all will feel at home, a belief encapsulated by the words of Mahatma Gandhi: "Be the change you wish to see in the world." Tom was indeed that change.
His legacy is not merely a list of accomplishments or positions held, but rather the countless hearts he touched and the minds he encouraged to think deeply about faith, justice, and love. Bishop Gumbleton lived a life that responded to the Gospel call: to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God (Micah 6:8).
As we remember Tom, let us not dwell on the loss, but celebrate the inspiring life of a man who walked among us as a living example of how to serve others with humility and strength. His spirit will continue to guide us, urging us toward greater compassion and understanding in a world that deeply needs it.
Bishop Thomas Gumbleton's journey on earth has ended, but his legacy endures in the lives of those he inspired. May we honor his memory by carrying forward the torch of hope, peace, and human dignity that he bore so gracefully throughout his remarkable life.
Visitation for Bishop Gumbleton will begin on Wednesday, April 10th, from 1pm until the time of the prayer service at 4pm at the IHM Sisters Motherhouse, 610 West Elm Avenue, Monroe. Visitation will continue Thursday, April 11th, from 2pm to 8pm at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1000 Eliot Street, Detroit (Click here for the visitation livestream) and Friday, April 12th, from 12 noon to 8 pm at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Park. Bishop Gumbleton will lie instate on Saturday, April 13th from 9:30 am until the time of his Funeral Mass at 11 am at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 9844 Woodward Avenue, Detroit. The Mass will be livestreamed here.
Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
In keeping with Bishop Gumbleton’s legacy, the Gumbleton family would appreciate memorial contributions be made in his honor to: The Solanus Casey Center, St. Leo’s Soup Kitchen, IHM Sisters, or Kay Lasante Clinic and select health care/Kay Lasante. Donations by check can be sent to: What If Foundation. 1569 Solano Ave. #192 Berkeley, CA 94707. Memo Line: Designate your donation to Kay Lasante Clinic. Arrangements entrusted to Chas.
