Elmer and Diana England - Unknown - January 08, 2024

Obituary Preview: In 1951, Elmer Ray England, a young man from Oklahoma, had come west to California to begin a new life for himself. He would meet Diana Louise Rankin, a beautiful young lady living in the small town of Nevada City. Their hearts were knit together on their very first date and in the spring of 1953, on May 10th they would begin a life together as husband and wife that would span the next 70 years.

On May 10th, 2023 Elmer and Diana celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. It was a joyous milestone for them, one which is rarely achieved by married couples. On October 7th, 2023 Diana finished her earthy life and was welcomed into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her beloved husband Elmer would join her on January 8th, 2024. The hope and promise of their faith in Jesus Christ, has been made sure. Today they are together again, enjoying their heavenly reward, in the presence of their God; “Well done good and faithful servant - enter into the joy of your master” Matthew 25:23

Diana was born on July 16th, 1933 in San Francisco, California to John and Louise Rankin. Elmer was born on November 29th, 1933 in Royal, Arkansas to Odis and Hattie England. After getting married, children soon followed, and the England family would officially begin.

Elmer and Diana would become parents of four boys, John, David, Jim, and Dan and their one daughter Suzy. In the later years of their lives, they would become loving grandparents and great-grandparents. Family was the essence of everything Elmer and Diana lived for. It was the foundation of who they were as a couple. The legacy they have left behind, is a shining example of love, faith, and commitment for generations to come.

Both Elmer and Diana had their own deep and personal relationships with God, based on their faith in Jesus Christ. They lived out their faith in a quiet, but powerful ways. They introduced their children to the truth of God’s love and plan of salvation and modeled that to them over the course of their entire lives. They would serve as active members of their communities and local churches. Both of their lives were a wonderful testimony of their love for God, one another, their family, and friends. They are missed by all those they have left behind. In the midst of the sorrow, their family and friends rejoice knowing that Elmer and Diana are enjoying eternal life together in the presence of their God and savior. For them both, the words of Paul ring so true; “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing” II Timothy 4: 6-8

A joint memorial service is planned for Tuesday March 5th, at 10am at Eastside Christian Church at 2075 E. Warm Springs road in Las Vegas.

Memorial gifts in Elmer and Diana’s honor may be made to either Our Daily Bread ministries in Grand Rapids, MI, or the Salvation Army of Las Vegas.

Elinor Marie Otto - October 28, 1919 - November 12, 2023

Obituary Preview: Elinor Otto, one of the original Rosie the Riveters, passed away on November 12, 2023, at a Las Vegas hospital after suffering a stroke. She was 104 years old.

Born in 1919, Elinor Otto was a 22-year-old recently divorced mother when the attack on Pearl Harbor changed American life. She learned how to use a rivet gun and became one of the original Rosie the Riveters, working at the Rohr Aircraft Corporation. Otto built airplanes throughout the war, but when it ended in 1945, the airplane work for women also came to an end as men returned from overseas.

She found her way back to riveting in 1951 at Ryan Aeronautical, where the skills she developed during the war were still in demand. She continued working to build airplanes, later at McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, for most of her life, most recently building C-17s. In fact, Otto was still working at age 95, when she was laid off as production of the C-17 ceased.

In 2017, the same year of her layoff, Otto had her first chance to ride in a C-171. She said it was thrilling, and she was excited that many of the crew members were women. That same year, she was honored with the Lillian L. Keil Award from the American Veterans Center and named Woman of the Year in her California State Assembly district.

Elinor Otto’s legacy is a testament to her resilience and dedication. Her contributions to the aviation industry and the role she played in World War II as a Rosie the Riveter will continue to inspire generations to come. She will be deeply missed.

James Roger Kardeke - November 17, 1947 - October 14, 2023

Obituary Preview: James Roger Kardeke, 75, died peacefully in his home in North Las Vegas, Nevada, Oct. 14, 2023, with his daughters, and beloved dogs, at his side. Born November 17, 1947, to Leo and June Kardeke in Chicago, Illinois, he dropped out of high school and joined the U.S. Navy. Stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station, he met and married his soul mate, Lynda Carol Pengra, Sept. 23, 1966—just three weeks after having met in Walnut Creek, California. Together, they had three children: Cassandra Anne, Christine Marie, and James Roger Jr.

After 11 years service in the Navy, and returning to California from having served in Vietnam, he left the service and began working in law enforcement with the Oakland Police Department. Not long after, he joined the U.S. Army, continued his career in law enforcement, took his family all over the world, and retired at Sierra Army Depot, California, in 1986. He was patriotic, believed in service to country and continued working 20 more years with the Department of Defense in various law enforcement positions until retiring at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, in 2008. Afterwards, he and his wife moved to North Las Vegas, where they spent the rest of their time together until Lynda passed in May 2021.

He was a devoted family man and enjoyed sports, particularly football and NASCAR. Although born in Chicago, he was an ardent Green Bay Packer fan. He and his daughter, Christine, traveled the country and attended several NASCAR races. He also became a huge Vegas Golden Knights hockey fan when they started in Las Vegas. He loved his pets, who cuddled up with him all the time, and remained at his side when he passed. He is survived by his two daughters, Cassandra and Christine; his sisters, Nancy and Barbara, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and one cousin. He was preceded in death by his son, James Roger Kardeke Jr.; his wife, Lynda Carol Kardeke; and parents, June and Leo Kardeke. No services are planned as he wished to be cremated along with his wife and son, followed by a quiet family gathering to say their farewells in the Red Woods of California

Born in in 1934 in Bethlehem, PA, Dick was the youngest of 7 children. He was a member of the Bethlehem Boys Club and enjoyed going to the local movie theater. He graduated in 1952 from Bethlehem Vocational Tech High School with a focus on printing. During school he worked for the Bethlehem Globe Times as a ‘printer’s devil’ or apprentice printer.

Dick entered the Marine Corps in 1953 where he had the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed at Quantico where he worked as a Pressman. After he left the USMC in 1956, he attended Rochester Institute of Technology and received a B.S. in Printing Management in 1959. Dick married in 1962 and raised 5 children. He has 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

He worked 59 years primarily as a Production Manager in the newspaper industry that included Gannett, Louisville Courier-Journal, The Chicago Sun Times, PANAX, Harte Hanks, among others. He retired after 20 years in 2009 from the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

After the passing of his wife, Jackie, in 2005, he learned how to sing and record. He had been a fixture in many karaoke spots in Las Vegas. He often assisted with the sound systems at such events. He also taught classes at UNLV’s OLLI Extension Courses. His subjects were movies/musicals. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of music and movies.

He was never one to sit still and was always curious. Dick would say when asked why he was doing this or that, he’d reply: “It’s something to do.” Basically, he loved life. Always making friends along the way, his dry humor and selfless nature endeared him to many. Dick passed away on May 27th, 2023. He was very much loved and will be missed

Ferdi graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in 1966 and moved to the United States for his Pathology residency at the University for Maryland. Ferdi practiced Anatomic and Clinical Pathology for 50 years in the Baltimore-Washington area and retired as Laboratory Director and Chairman of the Department of Pathology, Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, Maryland.

Ferdi was active in the Filipino and medical community in Baltimore and held many roles including: President of the Katipunan Filipino American Association of Maryland, President of the UP College of Medicine Alumni Association of Maryland, President of the Association of Filipino Physicians of Maryland, President of the Pinoy Golf Association of Maryland and Executive Director of the Association of Filipino Physicians of America, President of the Medical Alumni Association of America Baltimore-Washington chapter and Chairman of the Board of the UP Medical Alumni Association of America.

Aside for his love of medicine and research, Ferdi was passionate about golf, karaoke concerts from his favorite chair, watching sports including his beloved Baltimore teams, line dancing and skiing vacations with family and friends. Ferdi was an amazing son, brother, doctor, husband, father, and Lolo.

Ferdi is survived by his loving wife Cora, his two children, Gail and her husband Ryan (New York, NY), Jon and his wife Meghan (New Rochelle, NY) and his four grandchildren, Jackson, Mila, Hewitt and Harlowe.

Ferdi’s family will host a service on Saturday, June 17 at 10:30am at Church of the Holy Family in New Rochelle, NY.

Upon graduating, she began her life-long career as a clinical hospital pharmacist. She took on various leadership positions in pharmacy administration after moving to the Las Vegas area.

Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family and the great outdoors. She was an avid runner and a member of a local run club. She annually participated in the Rock and Roll Half Marathon with her brother and sister, as well as many other races in the area.

Style and fashion were her obsessions and shopping was a lifelong passion for Evelyn. In her leisure, Evelyn enjoyed traveling and touring the wine country with family and friends. She loved visiting art museums, catching up on stage shows and concerts, watching the latest movies, and sharing gourmet meals with family, friends and neighbors. She routinely supported and volunteered at various organizations. On the weekends Evelyn was often seen walking her dogs, shopping at boutiques, and enjoying a good happy hour.

Evelyn is survived by her husband Wilson, daughters, Claire (Arturo) and Casey (Calvin). She is also survived her brother, Leo, sister, Victoria (Gordon), nephews, Max and Sam, uncles Benson, Artmond (Miae), Calvin (Katy), and Oscar (Florence).

Evelyn worked hard to continuously educate herself and encourage growth in those around her. She was patient and loving. Her smiles and laughs were contagious. She will be missed by those lucky enough to experience her presence.

He was born September 11, 1963 in Las Vegas, Nevada and was a first generation Greek-American. Peter served as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force Civil Air Patrol; he was a pilot and an avid lover of planes. He enjoyed his life outdoors with his family and would spend his time boating on the Colorado River, going shooting in the desert, and racing his cars. He was an avid traveler, visiting Greece and taking his family RV camping in the summers in California.

One of the most important things to him was his family and boasting the title Papou. Peter was a loyal friend and his love reached all of those who were lucky enough to know him and will be deeply missed by all. He is survived by his son, Paul Nikolopoulos; daughter, Maria Nikolopoulos; daughter, Despina Nikolopoulos; and grandchildren, Ryleigh, Alicia, Hailee, Athena, Jacob, and Peter.

Julius was preceded in death by his parents Julius Wilson and Camilla Ruth, his daughter Donielle Wilson, and his grandson Sean Wilson Jr.

Julius retired from the Navy Department of Defense. His favorite hobby was fishing. He was also known as “Mr. Fix-It” because he was a jack of all trades.

He is forever love and deeply missed.

He loved Disney and was an expert in navigating Disneyland. He spent many happy times there with his family.

He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, daughters, Sydney, and Shelby, his mom, Sharon, sister, Sheri, her husband Dave, niece Sara, nephews Trevor and Erik, mother-in-law, Glady, and sister-in-law, Nikk. Two beloved grandchildren Emma and Brayden. He is preceded in death by his father Michael D. Ybarra, Jr.

Glenn Masayoshi Matsuki - December 30, 1950 - January 15, 2023

Obituary Preview: With 1,200 connections on LinkedIn, 900 Facebook friends, and 26,000 blog posts reaching 4 million visitors in 15 years, Glenn Matsuki, program consultant at The Alliance and 27-year heart recipient, is more than a networker. He’s the ultimate connector (a term coined by author Malcolm Gladwell to describe a handful of people who seem to know everyone). That ability to keep and make friends also makes him an effective mentor and is a skill he says he learned growing up.

“When you grow up in Hawaii, you learn the Aloha Spirit, and that’s basically be kind to others, accept others for what they are, and appreciate their culture and what they represent,” says Matsuki.

Matsuki said that Aloha Spirit has served him well through a variety of careers which have included working at Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, owning a floral shop and a pirate radio station, and becoming the Transplant Administration Coordinator at Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center. He says he’s paying forward the help he’s received and is serving as a mentor in The Alliance Mentorship Program – a national network of peer mentors for the organ donation and transplantation community of practice. After his 1995 heart transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Matsuki joined the liver transplant team where he honed his mentoring skills working with high school students in the Youth Employment Development Program. “Both of my Cedars-Sinai mentees have now become RNs.” Being an active listener is at the core of Matsuki’s mentoring style. “Allowing people to express their thoughts, their concerns, their fears, and their challenging situations and talking about and celebrating small successes is key.” “I think I get more out of mentoring than I give to my mentee because I’m very proud of their accomplishments,” he says. “I always tell my mentee that the commitment I want out of you is that you’re going to mentor someone else. You’re going to take what you learn and you’re going to help that person became a leader as well.”

After graduating from the University of Hawaii, he joined Sheraton Hotels & Resorts due to a bad case of wanderlust created by his family. “By the time I graduated from high school, I had been to all 50 states and three Canadian provinces,” says Matsuki. In addition to wanderlust, he says his family also created his tenaciousness. “My parents and grandparents really instilled in me that you work hard, you do your best and if you fail, you try, try again. That’s been my mantra throughout life.”

After more than a decade at Sheraton, he left in 1985 to run a floral group that he had invested in. “I’m still friends with some of my customers from the flower shop,” he says. In 1995, he caught a flu that progressed rapidly from an infection to congestive heart failure. He was on the waiting list for 11 weeks and said his post-transplant recovery still holds the record at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was admitted on a Friday and went home the following Saturday. After his transplant, his life took another turn and he volunteered at Cedars-Sinai. “I would greet patients that were being evaluated for heart transplantation. I shared my story to express that there’s life after transplant and not to fear. And, you know, right now, I’m still friends with a few people that I consulted with.”

Eventually, he became the administrative coordinator in the liver transplant program and then joined the organ procurement organization OneLegacy. He went on to serve as a project manager at Donor Network West and as a program director at The Alliance. While at OneLegacy, Matsuki was assigned to work with two pediatric hospitals. “At one of the first conferences I attended, I heard [Dr.] Tom Nakagawa speak and he really helped me. He became my mentor.” “I’m especially proud of my work in healthcare,” he says. Being able to speak to a broader audience at conferences and sharing knowledge of best practices to increase organ donation are the things I’m really proud of.” The following is a quote from a friends Facebook post:

Clifford Millard Wood - May 15, 1944 - November 28, 2022

Obituary Preview: Clifford Millard Wood, Jr (Cliff), age 78, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, NV passed away on Monday, November 28, 2022, after a battle with cancer.

Born May 15, 1944, in El Paso, TX, Cliff grew up in Foley and Daphne, AL. In 1961, while a junior star running back at Foley High School, he was recruited by legendary coach Bear Bryant to play football at the University of Alabama. Unfortunately, he was injured during his senior year, preventing him from playing football any longer, but he did go on to graduate from University of Alabama in 1967. He completed Advanced ROTC pilot training and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, active duty in the U.S. Army 18 OCT 1967. He then completed Airborne & Ranger Training at Ft Benning, Georgia and achieved the rank of Captain. He served in Vietnam from September 16, 1969 – September 15, 1970, as a fixed wing U.S. Army pilot assigned to 144th Aviation Company (Radio Research (R.R.)) AN Khe, South Vietnam. Upon returning to the states, Cliff served as a fixed wing pilot instructor at Fort Rucker Army Base, Fort Rucker, AL until being Honorably Discharged March 15, 1973. He was awarded several aviation & bravery metals while serving in Vietnam by the U.S. Army and, in 2010, was awarded the Warriors Medal of Valor from the Native American Nations of the United States of America for valorous service while serving the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

Cliff went on to become an Exxon crew boat captain in New Orleans, LA ferrying up to 100 men / women at a time to Exxon’s oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. He also flew seaplanes for National Geographic photography trips in Alaska for a short time. His other career experiences included operating a 75-foot Morgan Catch Yacht Charter boat business in Key West, FL. Later, he moved to Las Vegas, NV to fly as a pilot for a freight company as well Adventure Airlines flying tourists to the Grand Canyon. He also piloted medical evacs and private aircraft for a neurological surgeon. During the 1990’s and 2000’s he served as a fixed wing pilot instructor in Las Vegas and finished his flying years piloting a skydiving club’s aircraft. During his flying career, Cliff also nurtured his love for gardening and landscaping. He became licensed as a Master Gardener in both Nevada and Georgia, serving in a community advisory capacity. His greatest joy came while serving thousands of hours at the UNR Cooperative Extension Orchard in Las Vegas. The leaders, associates, and volunteers at this Orchard and in the Master Gardener’s Society became his family and his dearest friends, both on and off the “field.” He will be missed by so many!

Jerry married Deanna Mary Park on August 27th, 1955 and they were married until her death on September 18th, 2003. Jerry married Wilda Lavaughn Roe on January 6th, 2004 and they were married until her death on July 13th, 2018.

Jerry was an Automotive Electrician for the City of Los Angeles Police Department. He retired in 1992. His hobbies included archery, bowling, fishing, RV trips, card games and reading. He was President of California Bowmen Hunter and State Archery Association for many years as well as a Director for the National Field Archery Association. He was inducted into the California Archery Hall of Fame on January 17th, 1998.

Jerry had Polio as a small child and throughout his life was determined to never be treated as if he were handicapped.

Left behind to cherish his memory ar his children Joseph Miller (Sharon), Nancy Walters (Rogers), Robert Miller (Sherri), brother Larry Miller (Peggy), grandchildren Shaylynn, Eric, Justus, David, great-grandchildren Bryant, Matthias, Evelyn, Lillia, Margaux, nephews Mike, Hugh, Robert, nieces Kathleen, Doreen, Rhonda, Tina, Lori, best friend Hal "Woody" Woods and many other friends.

Teresa had an amazingly witty sense of humor, and the sounds of her laughter will carry on in her family’s memories. She was a deeply loving, hardworking woman who touched the lives of all she encountered. She will be greatly missed.

Teresa was preceded in death by her father, Charles Ziegenhagen, and her husband, Richard Garcia.

She leaves behind two children, Christina Larson and Renee Alejo; two grandchildren, Violet Lewis and Nora Alejo; her mother, Marjorie Ziegenhagen; five siblings, Becky Fowler, Margaret Ziegenhagen, Janet Carr, Karen Chisum, and Chuck Ziegenhagen; and countless cousins, nieces and nephews.

Obituary Preview: Francis Joseph “Pete” Cruz Briones peacefully died and rejoined our Creator on the night of Thursday, September 28, 2022 at the Special Loving Care Alzheimer's Nursing and Hospice Home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cradled in the arms of his life partner, Nenita and surrounded by his children, Francis formidably ended his fight with cancer following a series of strokes in early August.

Francis, second to the youngest of four siblings, was born and raised in Tarlac City, Philippines where he grew up to become a mechanical engineer, a devout Catholic and a family man. Francis went to Adamson University in Manila to complete his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering where he also met his former wife and mother to his five children, Rebecca. After college, Francis went back to reside in Tarlac City where he took over the family business and eventually, also raised his own family. As a devout Catholic, he took after his parents, Gregorio and Felisa, an active participant in church and joining religious congregations such as Couples for Christ and the Knights of Columbus. His proudest moment was being able to serve as a layman in his diocese, San Sebastian Cathedral.

Francis followed his family and immigrated to the USA in 2013, where he furthered his engineering career by getting HVAC Certified and eventually taking on engineering roles for Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas.

It was also in Las Vegas where he found a second shot at love while working at a living community. Nenita showed him a kinder, sweeter heart – more open to all kinds of people and experiences in his later stage in life.

Francis’ passion for everything in life was unmistakable.

His commanding presence made him an excellent orator – unabashed and unapologetic.

His meticulousness made him a great mechanic — oftentimes, one would find him tinkering on an engine part or hidden behind the hood of his car.

His compassion, dependability and expressiveness made him more than just the provider and protector of the family. Always involved in his children’s lives, he taught them to always aim for the best — even at times, the impossible — in life. To never shy away from what must be done in order to achieve the best possible version of themselves while doing the right thing.

Up to the very end, Francis’ love for war-time movies and TV shows; stories of heroism and success never faded. Perhaps he unwittingly lived those stories as he emerged a true hero, not only to Nenita and his children, but also to his own journey in life. A man from humble beginnings, navigating through adversities, seemingly defying the impossible and leaving behind a great legacy for generations to come.

He is survived by Nenita, his partner of nearly 12 years; his five children – daughter Therese (Marlborough, MA), daughter Kristine and her partner Margarita (Bayonne, NJ), daughter Kathryn (Las Vegas, NV), daughter Martha Joy and son-in-law Jin (Irvine, CA), son Michael Joseph and partner Rodrigo; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Sophie.

On November 5th 2022, a memorial was held honoring the life of Francis Joseph “Pete” Cruz Briones at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton church in Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada at 10:30am PT.

He worked as a retail troubleshooter and wine broker for major retailers. After he emigrated to the U.S., he worked in various sales and retail management roles. Paul has lived in Michigan, California, and for the last seven years of his life in fabulous Las Vegas, NV where he thoroughly enjoyed attending shows, dining out, and living the desert life.

Paul was a loving and supportive husband. He was a helpful friend and a nurturing father. He saw beauty in the most remote places. He had a passion for travel, art, and music. He was an accomplished photographer, having exhibited his works at various Michigan venues and the Las Vegas Arts District. Paul’s favorite place in the world was in the kitchen or at the grill, cooking up delicious food. He could often be found reading cookbooks or browsing the internet for unique recipes. Paul was a humanitarian at heart. Several times a week he would prepare and deliver lunches and cold water to the homeless in Las Vegas. He noted he did this because, “I have been fortunate in my life, and I want to do something to give back.”

Terry will be missed by all that knew and loved him.
