Larry Jay Kapenga - April 17, 1944 - April 14, 2024

Departed: 04/14/2024 (Hudsonville)
Obituary Preview: Larry Jay Kapenga, age 79 of Hudsonville, was welcomed home to glory on Sunday April 14, 2024.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Kapenga; nephews, Douglas Dipple, Chuck Christensen.
He is survived by his children, Tracy Kapenga and Tim Adams, Tom and Tricia Kapenga; grandchildren, Seth Brower, Haley and Stephen Pake, Jasmine Kapenga, Malachi Kapenga, Jordyn Kapenga; great grandchildren, Haven Pake, Jasper Pake; sisters, Marlene and Tom St. John, Audrey Logan, Sally Kapenga; in-laws, Wayne and Terri DeVault, Lauren and Mark James; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Larry loved the Lord, his family, his friends and his community. In his 36 years teaching 6th and 4th grades, he impacted many students and families with his unique blend of humor, teaching, caring and discipline. Running laps and writing words left an indelible and valuable mark on many students over the years. As a softball, basketball, and track/cross country coach Larry was as passionate about his athletes as much as the students in his class. Serving for another 16 years on the school board was a tribute to his dedication to the students of Hudsonville. Larry served as an elder and Sunday school teacher for many years at Hudsonville Reformed Church, a church he loved for more than 50 years. His faith was evident to all who knew him. He enjoyed singing hymns any chance he had and continued to sing Victory in Jesus with his family right until his last days. Outside of church and school, Larry loved to travel. Every summer was a different trip somewhere around the country to watch his favorite Detroit Tigers play on the road. Always the educator, those trips would include some historical or other learning opportunity as well. Larry could travel the road from Michigan to Florida with his eyes closed. There was never a question where he was headed the minute school let out. All you had to do was ask and he would give you all his travel tricks between Hudsonville and Panama City Beach. He instilled a love of baseball and travel into his kids. Larry was a faithful husband, a tremendous father, an amazing Bumpa and a beloved great-grandfather. He was a loving brother and brother-in-law, a quick-witted uncle, a caring cousin, and a steadfast friend.
Funeral services for Larry will be held on Friday, April 19, at 11:00 A.M. at Hudsonville Reformed Church, 3950 Highland Dr. Hudsonville, MI 49426, with a luncheon to follow. Visitation will be held at VanderLaan Funeral Home on Thursday, April 18, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M.
