Departed: 12/13/2023 (Buffalo)
Obituary Preview: JAMES KENNARD NEWELL January 2, 1952 ~ December 13, 2023
Silver earrings meticulously crafted, a program for a symphony season, a woodworker’s finishing touch on an antique cabinet, and a beautifully restored rocking horse. These are only some of the pieces James Newell crafted in his lifetime.
A child of Charles and Ane Rasmussen Newell, James grew up in Detroit and Livonia, Michigan. He graduated from Bentley High School in 1970, and in 1973 from Kendall School of Art and Design in Grand Rapids MI, where he began a long career in freelance graphic design and fine art.
Newell served as a medic with the USAF in the late seventies. In the early eighties he met and fell in love with his life partner, and lover of all things art, Susan Schwartz. Together they built a life in Grand Rapids and Muskegon, MI, Minneapolis, MN, Cleveland, OH, Syracuse and Buffalo, NY as Susan’s symphony career took them to new cities and new work. Just two years ago they completed their forever home on the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg, NY, where they welcomed numerous friends and family to enjoy their home with its parade of ships. In the winter months, they resided in East Aurora, NY.
James is survived by his wife, Susan M. Schwartz, a son Todd (Amber Iler) and grandson Connor, all of Ann Arbor, MI, sisters Nancy Newell Jones of Indianapolis, IN and Karen Newell Blaesing of Hurt, Virginia, father-in-law, Frank Schwartz, sister-in-law, Ellen Schwartz and her partner, John Poorman of St. Petersburg, Florida and Ogdensburg, NY, as well as countless friends. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held on the St. Lawrence River this summer.
In remembrance, contributions may be made to the Cleveland and Buffalo Rotary clubs, or the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg, NY.

MaryAnn E. Cortright - December 24, 1954 - April 22, 2023

Departed: 04/22/2023 (Buffalo)
Obituary Preview: CORTRIGHT, MaryAnn E. (nee Brodfuehrer)
April 22, 2023  Wife of the late Thomas A. Cortright; dear mother of Jeffrey (Jennifer) Brodfuehrer of Tolland, CT and Gina (Brian) Boldt of Corfu, NY; grandmother of Dominick and Angelina Boldt and Sara Brodfuehrer; sister of Robert, Kathryn (John), Patricia (late Robert), Paul (Debbie), Thomas and the late JoAnn Brodfuehrer; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, April 29 at 10 AM in Blessed Trinity Church, 317 Leroy Ave., Buffalo, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM. Arrangements by VANDERCHER & DICK FUNERAL HOME. Online condolences at vanddfuneralhome.com. Obituary
MaryAnn was born in Buffalo on Christmas Eve 1954, an early Christmas gift to her parents Robert and Beverly Brodfuehrer. A new addition to the family welcomed by her siblings JoAnn, Robert, Kathryn and Patricia. Her “baby of the family” role lasted six years until brothers Paul and Thomas joined what by today’s standards would be considered a large family, but was quite common in the predominately German – Irish Central Park neighborhood.
MaryAnn was Baptized at Blessed Trinity where she also attended grammar school. During her school years, she celebrated her First Holy Communion and Confirmation at Blessed Trinity and graduated from the school in 1969. She continued her high school years in the Buffalo Public School system attending Bennett High School, graduating from there in 1974.
MaryAnn went on to raise her two beautiful children, Jeffrey and Gina as a young single mother. As a single mother she also found time to go back to school earning an Associate Degree in Business from Bryant & Stratton College. With the Associate Degree in hand, she was hired as a “Client Service Specialist” by L & M Wealth Management where she remained employed until the time of her passing. She often spoke of how much she enjoyed her job and the love and appreciation of her co-workers.
MayAnn married Thomas Cortright on July 22, 2006, but unfortunately lost her beloved husband to an untimely death in 2010.
The compassion MaryAnn showed for the ones she loved was limitless. As the primary care giver to her parents Beverly and Robert, she lived with them from the time they could not reasonably take care of themselves, to the time of their passing. She felt family should always be with family right to the end and was at the bedside of many family members when their time came.
MaryAnn was a strong-willed, creative, quirky, and fun person to be around. Hosting holiday parties, sharing vegetables from her garden, adopting stray animals, wearing ridiculous hats, chasing, playing and nick-naming children are just a few traits she will always be remembered for. She once trained her chickens to get in line to come to her when she called so they could be scratched under their wings! You just never knew what she would say or do when you were in a room with her, which always made your own life a little better.
In addition to her two children, MaryAnn is survived by her three grandchildren Dominick and Angelina Boldt and Sara Brodfuehrer. Her wonderful memories will be with us the rest of our lives!

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, February 4 at Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, 655 Michigan Ave., Buffalo, NY. with visitation at 12 Noon and a funeral service to follow at 1 PM. Entombment at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Serenity Mausoleum. Arrangements by VANDERCHER & DICK FUNERAL HOME. Online condolences at VANDDFUNERALHOME.COM. JESSIE BELL
On July 24th in 1931, Virdell Bailey had a long-haired, fat-legged most prettiest and most bestest of all little girls. and she named me Jessie Bell.
I was educated in the Buffalo Public School System and graduated from Hutchinson Central High School. After high school I worked as an Aide at Veterans hospital. That is where I met the man who would be by my side for 60 years; Cortez Wells. My mother kept asking me “Why don’t you become a Real Nurse”? She thought that’s what RN stood for, Real Nurse. I went and applied to the nursing program at ECMC, but they were only taking two black students at a time. I waited and then I applied to Niagara University and D’Youville College. I said whichever school I hear from first is the one I’m going to. And just my luck, the one that was farthest away, Niagara University sent a letter first. It was there that they told me that I would never make it. So, I had to prove them wrong, you say I’m not gon make it I’ll show your a--. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1975.I was so good; I received an award for Best Cancer Nurse. I also received a certificate in Nursing from Niagara in 1976. It was hard. Every day, I had to drop Michael off crying at day care which made me late for school and then I got so many speeding tickets trying to get back to him before they closed. When I finally got there his two-faced self didn’t want to leave. After working so long in hospitals, I got tired of lifting bed pans and decided I wasn’t going to lift anything heavier than a pencil. So, what did I do? I went back to school to obtain a Master of Oncology Nursing from The University of Buffalo in 1977.There were not many women of color in the field at that time, so you know I had to shine. And shine I did. I was shining so bright that I was appointed by Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State to sit on the Board of Visitors: Association for NYS Facilities. I also served with the Visiting Nurses Association of Western New York. I then became a Professor of Nursing at Erie Community College, and a Nursing Instructor at The Educational Opportunity Center; some of you were probably my students. I worked at BryLin Psychiatric Center, some of you might have been my patients. I will not confirm nor deny that. I finally retired in 1994, but O.J. tried to steal my shine and capture all the attention on the news. I never liked white Broncos after that.
I grew up at Pilgrim Baptist Church where I was baptized by Rev. H.B. Shaw. Later my mother and I belonged to Friendship Baptist Church. The pastor, C.L. Franklin, had his daughter get up to sing after he preached every Sunday. We were like “Not again, we gotta listen to her?” She was good, she knew every word to all the songs, we were kinda jealous of her. We couldn’t hate her for that, so, we had to find something about her to not like. We didn’t like her name, her stupid name was Aretha. What kind of name was Aretha? Everybody had names like Betty, Dorothy, Susie or…Jessie Bell. Yea, Aretha Franklin. Y’all probably heard of her.
As an adult I joined St. Bartholomew and was a member until they closed the doors. Wells and I then joined Blessed Trinity in 1991. I was a long-time member of the parish council, serving on its discipleship committee. Being the social butterfly that I am, I organized many of the parish social events. I organized a fashion show and had the heavy weight boxer Baby Joe Masi as the special guest. I was a member of the Ladies Sodality and served as corresponding secretary.
Outside of all my church duties I love to dance. When I was younger I would stay out dancing all night. Then have to sneak back in after curfew. I also loved bowling and playing the piano. I used to even teach piano lessons. I have always been a big sports fan. Basketball, football and baseball are my favorites. If sports aren’t on, then I am always watching the Game Show Network. My favorite shows: America Says, Chain Reaction, $100,000 Pyramid and Family Feud. I also love gospel music. My all-time favorites are James Cleveland and Rance Allen. My favorite musicals are The Black Wiz and Purlie Victorious. If you haven’t heard of Purlie, you need to look it up. Since its time for me to “Walk on Up the Stairs,” I’ll let you hear it today.
Those are a few of my favorite things. But my all-time favorite is family. You know the reunions were started after my mother Virdell passed away. Cousin Henry “Boo” Miller said we need to get together for more than just funerals. The first reunion was held in 1971. I never missed a single one, or any chance to be with family. Now you all make sure to continue this tradition. Family is all we have.
My Mother and father will be there to meet me as I walk on up the stairs and take the Lord’s hand. My husband, Cortez Wells; my brothers Willie “Bill” Davis, John, George, Melvin “Sonny” Williams, and my sister Hildred (Glenwood) Pino will all be there for a heavenly reunion when I get there. Those of you who are still here to comfort each other and talk about all the memories; my sons, Jerome (Belinda) Williams and Michael Wells, my sister Avery “Erie” Key, my grandchildren Valerie Nelson, Cheryl Williams-Manney, Stephanie Williams, Catherine (Jerome) Robinson, Camille Williams, Jerome (Victoria) Williams, Krista Bell and Chase Wells and let’s not forget my Chosen grandchildren, Bobby Williams and Shantela Woods. You all hold up all my many great grands and great-great grand, and my god daughter Monique Andrew. To the many cousins and friends remember me, when the Baileys are at sea, and all the reunions that are yet to be.

Shirley A. Parks - April 27, 1934 - November 03, 2022

Departed: 11/03/2022 (Buffalo)
Obituary Preview: SHIRLEY A. PARKS dedicated her entire life to helping those in need and being an ambassador for Christ. She demonstrated her Christian values in every aspect of her life. Born Shirley Ann Cummings in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1934, she was the youngest of Oscar and Susan Cummings’ three children. Her siblings were Alfred and Arnold Cummings.
Shirley attended Buffalo Public Schools #31 and Hutchinson Central High School but left high school at age 17 to marry Joseph Parks of Lake Providence, Louisiana. In addition to their five children—Joyce, Brenda, Joseph, Donald and Ivan—Shirley raised three others.
Shirley was a devote Catholic and parish leader at St. Benedict the Moor Church. Following its closure, she joined the newly formed congregation of St. Martin de Porres and was actively involved in efforts to construct a new church building. At the time of her death, Shirley was a member of Blessed Trinity Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.
At age 42, Shirley returned to school to complete requirements for a high school diploma and received a GED from the Educational Opportunity Center. She went on to attend Millard Fillmore College and Carson College at the University of Buffalo and achieved her goal of working in health care when she was hired as a clerk in the Admissions Department of Millard Fillmore Hospital at Gates Circle. The first black ever hired by the hospital in Admissions, Shirley improved her secretarial skills by attending Buffalo’s Bryant and Stratton Business Institute. In the hospital setting, Shirley displayed a unique talent for welcoming visitors and calming anxious patients, and the hospital administration rewarded her with increased responsibilities. She was known for sending patients off to surgery or an office visit with a sincere smile, warm touch and her famous “May blessings be with you and yours.”
Shirley served at least three terms as president of MECCA (Millard Employee’s Charitable Contribution Association), an employee assistance program providing financial aid for employees experiencing a personal crisis. Shirley was recognized numerous times for her contributions to the hospital, including the Black Achievers in Industry Award in 1999 and the Kaleida Health Legend Award in 2003. In 2001, Channel 7 News nominated her as the “Sweetheart of the Year.” Through the years, the hospital’s administrative office received many letters from patients and visitors expressing the same sentiment: gratitude for having been in Shirley’s care and presence. When she ended her thirty-one-year career at Millard Fillmore in 2010, retiring with the title Concierge-Greeter, she was described as “an ambassador of good will for Kaleida Health.”
In addition to her five children, Shirley is survived by twenty grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and seventeen great-great-grandchildren.
