Martha Manning Stein - February 15, 1934 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Franklin Lakes)
Obituary Preview: Martha Manning Stein of The Holland Christian Home, North Haledon, NJ (formerly of Franklin Lakes, NJ) passed away peacefully on April 20,2024 with family members by her side. Martha was a resident of Franklin Lakes, NJ for over 56 years. Martha was born February 15, 1934 in Manchester, NH to Gardner and Mary Manning. Her sister Barbara was born seventeen months later. Martha’s early childhood took her to many locations all across the United States where her father served as a doctor with the US army in WW2. Martha quickly made friends but her best friend was her sister Barbara. The two sisters would both attend Wheaton College, even being roommates for one year. While at Wheaton Martha attended a neighborhood Bible Club Prayer Meeting, and met John Stein, and the rest is history.
Martha graduated college in 1956 with an Art degree and credentials in Teaching. Soon after graduation John and Martha wed. In1964, they built a house in Franklin Lakes to raise their family.
Teaching others would become her lifelong calling. Each of Martha’s three children, John, Barbara and Peter grew up learning to love the outdoors, whether it was skating on their backyard pond or learning to swim with Martha as their swim instructor. Oma and Opa, John’s parents, cherished their daughter in law, and treated her as one of the family from the start. John and Martha’s family resided next door to her in-laws. Martha’s father in law, although retired, continued to own and operate The Ramapo Chocolate Company from his home. Martha would send the children over to help wrap chocolate Easter bunnies and Christmas Santas. Of course Martha knew eating the leftover broken chocolate pieces was fair game for Oma and Opa’s helpers. Martha taught her three children to help where needed. All three children mowed lawns, weeded gardens and picked buckets of blueberries. Martha was an avid gardener so when the children were hungry, she would tell them to go out into the garden and pick the green beans or peas.
Martha used her teaching skills to reach out to her church and her community. The very first family member she taught art formally to was her niece Betsy, who said, “It was my Aunt Martha who taught me to see color, and my world has not been the same since her lessons.” Martha taught Still Life Oil Painting and Pastels at night school to adults both in Ramsey and Midland Park. She also substitute taught in the local public high schools. Her teaching did not stop in the classroom, but extended to her church, particularly to the next generation. Martha taught children’s Sunday school for 11 years at Grace Community Church in Franklin Lakes and also designed crafts for their annual Vacation Bible School for many years to come. Martha fit the craft to the Bible lesson and then carried out the mission of getting 50-100 children to successfully create the craft and get it home in one piece. Martha made each craft time fun and memorable. She was also a Pioneer Girls leader (a Christ centered version of Girl Scouts) for 35 years at her church. She would go on hikes, lead Bible lessons and discussions, work crafts and help girls earn badges. Always making teaching fun. Martha never tired of her objective.
Martha’s home was always open and all were welcome. Grandchildren, neighbors and church friends were invited to progressive dinners, annual church picnics or just coffee and conversation. Martha was a wonderful listener and storyteller. She allowed you to feel as though no one else mattered but you when in conversation. She loved to tell stories of friends, travels and adventures she had experienced. Martha visited several of the National Parks out west with her beloved family. One trip brought John and her to England and Scotland. They traveled back to the USA on the QE2 in 1978. They took a tour through Europe stopping in several countries and traveled to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Her favorite vacation place was Lake Willoughby, VT where the family vacationed year after year. Many of her paintings reflect the surrounding area. In the boat on the lake, John would fish and Martha would often sketch and paint the world around her. Martha had a deep and abiding love for Jesus her Savior, evidenced in her life by her family and friends.
Martha Stein was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, John H. Stein and her son, John G. Stein. Martha was a loving mother to her daughter Barbara (Richard) Wells and their sons David and Tim (Kelli) Wells, her son Peter (Martha) Stein and their daughter Katy (Ben) their son Mark (Colleen) and their daughter Krissy (Bryan) and to her daughter in law Kathi (Steve) Mitchell and sons John (Lori) Stein and Jim (Aimee) Stein. Martha has 8 great grandchildren. Martha is also survived by her sister Barbara Child, and many wonderful nieces and nephews and their families.

We gather in solemn remembrance to honor the life of Mark Paul McCloskey, who departed from this world peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2024, in Westwood, New Jersey.
Born to Joseph and Elsie McCloskey, Mark's journey began on October 7, 1952. He carried forward the values of family, hard work, and service, which were deeply instilled in him from an early age.
Mark's life was a testament to love and commitment, mirrored in his cherished family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Joann McCloskey, and his loving children, Kelly and Joshua Kreutz, Daniel McCloskey and his wife Lisa, and Patrick McCloskey. His presence as a guiding force and loving patriarch will be deeply missed by his brothers, Joseph McCloskey of Brooklyn, NY, David and Nancy McCloskey of North Carolina, and Robert and Jeanne McCloskey of Florida.
Mark and Joann’s love story began in the aisles of Foodtown in Haledon, New Jersey, where Mark was once Joann’s boss. That hierarchy changed when their relationship quickly blossomed into a romantic partnership, culminating in their marriage in 1978, a union that would be filled with love, joy, growth, and the welcoming of their 3 children.
His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Zachary, Joseph, Leonardo, and Abigail, who will carry forth the memories of their grandfather's love and life's teachings.
Mark dedicated 34 years to FedEx as a Courier, delivering more than parcels; he delivered kindness and a warm smile to all he encountered.
His commitment to his community was unwavering, serving on the Haledon Public Schools Board of Education for 17 years and holding the position of Board President for 6 of those years. His charitable spirit was evident through his involvement with the Knights of Columbus as a 3rd degree Knight at council #6903, as a Haledon PAL Softball and Baseball Coach, and as a mentor with the Cub Scouts of America.
An avid gardener, Mark found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His love for the outdoors was all-encompassing including fishing, camping, and exploring the beauty of national parks. A sports enthusiast, he held a passionate allegiance to the Yankees, the Jets, and West Point Army Football.
Above all, Mark's heart belonged to his family. The joy of his life was spending time with his grandchildren, instilling in them the same appreciation for life's simple pleasures that he held dear.
As we bid farewell to Mark, we find comfort in the memories he left behind and the impact he had on all who knew him. In honor of his memory, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, or to honor Mark's love of nature, plant a tree.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend writes the obituary, but it can also be written by a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality to create a meaningful and accurate tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. You may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, or other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Traditional newspaper obituaries are usually shorter (around 100-200 words), while online obituaries can be longer (up to 500 words or more). It's essential to check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging. Check with the publication or platform for their photo submission guidelines.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process. They may require you to email or fax the obituary text and any accompanying photos. Be sure to ask about deadlines, pricing, and any specific formatting requirements.

What is an online obituary?

An online obituary is a digital version of a traditional obituary, published on a website or social media platform. Online obituaries often offer more flexibility in terms of content, images, and video tributes. They can also be easily shared with others and remain accessible for years to come.

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website. Some websites may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days). Be sure to check with the platform for their archiving policies.

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Online obituary platforms usually allow you to make changes or updates to the obituary after it's been published. However, this may depend on the specific platform's policies and procedures.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or obituary websites using keywords like the deceased person's name, date of birth and death, and location. You may also visit local libraries or genealogical societies that maintain archives of historical newspapers.

Are obituaries only for older people?

No. Obituaries can be written for anyone who has passed away, regardless of age. While it's true that older adults are more likely to have an obituary written about them, younger people who have made significant contributions or had a profound impact on their community may also be honored with an obituary.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?

Absolutely! Writing an obituary for someone who passed away years ago can be a meaningful way to honor their memory and share their story with others. You can publish it online or share it with family and friends.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice an error in an already-published obituary, contact the publication or platform immediately to request corrections. They will typically work with you to correct the mistake and republish the revised obituary.

Can I use humor in an obituary?

Yes! Humor can be an effective way to celebrate the deceased person's personality and spirit. However, be mindful of your audience and ensure that any humorous anecdotes or remarks are respectful and won't offend those who are grieving.

Should I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Including information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's values and legacy. Be sure to specify the charity's name and address (if applicable).

Can I write my own obituary?

While it may seem unusual, some people do choose to write their own obituaries before they pass away. This can provide a sense of control and allow you to shape how you're remembered. However, it's essential to discuss this with your loved ones beforehand to ensure they're comfortable with the idea.

What is a living obituary?

A living obituary is a biographical sketch written about someone who is still alive. It's often used as a way to celebrate milestones or achievements during their lifetime rather than after they've passed away.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can post a link to the online obituary or share a brief summary along with relevant hashtags.

How do I deal with negative comments on an online obituary?

If you encounter negative comments on an online obituary, try not to engage with them directly. Instead, report inappropriate comments to the platform administrator or moderator for removal. Focus on celebrating the deceased person's life and legacy instead of responding to negativity.

Can I create a memorial webpage for my loved one?

How do I cope with writing an obituary during a difficult time?

Writing an obituary can be emotionally challenging, especially when dealing with grief. Take your time, gather support from loved ones if needed, and focus on celebrating the deceased person's life rather than dwelling on your own emotions.

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's passing and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy is a spoken tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service that shares personal anecdotes and memories of the deceased person.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?

You can use existing templates as inspiration or guidance when writing an obituary. However, it's essential to customize the content to fit your loved one's unique life story and personality.

How do I know what tone to use when writing an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should reflect the deceased person's personality and spirit. Aim for sincerity, respectfulness, and authenticity when sharing their story with others.
