Ilda Lou Van Zee - March 22, 1931 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Pella)
Obituary Preview: Ilda Lou Mol was born on Sunday, March 22,1931, at the home of her parents, Jake and Agnes Rose (Hasselman) Mol in Sully, Iowa. Her mother told her the church bells were ringing when she made her arrival; perhaps this was a sign that she would be involved musically in church throughout her life. Ilda Lou, (as many Sully people called her) attended school in Sully and graduated from Sully High School in 1949 as Valedictorian of her class of nine students. Ilda’s dream after high school was to attend Central College and obtain her teaching degree, but instead she decided perhaps she should make some money first and started a job in Newton working at an automatic washer company and she also spent time working as a medical assistant in Sully. Eventually her dream of teaching was fulfilled in a different way through all the students she impacted with her piano lessons. She began taking piano lessons at age six, and at 15 became a piano teacher herself, giving lessons in her parents’ home and later in Pella.
She began to use her musical talents as an accompanist and organist at the First Reformed Church in Sully in 1949, the same year she was baptized and made confession of faith. Ilda Lou became the bride of LeRoy Allen Van Zee of Monroe on November 13, 1951, at the First Reformed Church in Sully. They lived in Denver, Colorado, for ten months while LeRoy was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. She returned to Sully to live with her parents when LeRoy received an 18-month order for overseas duty in Okinawa. It was during this time that their first child was born, a son Douglas Scott, who was 14 months old when LeRoy returned from overseas duty to see his son for the first time. They lived in Rantoul, Illinois, until LeRoy’s discharge in December 1954. They built their home at 1106 Peace Street in Pella and added two daughters to the family: Melody Sue in 1957 and Jill Ann in 1968. They became members of Trinity Reformed Church where Ilda was an organist beginning in 1956. She played the organ at her home church in Sully and at Trinity for 70 years and played for numerous weddings and funerals. She accompanied many small groups, directed the adult and junior choirs at church for several years, and taught piano to over a hundred students.
Ilda leaves behind a legacy of faith, hospitality, and service to others. She was a positive person and known for preparing wonderful meals and hosting many guests in her home. LeRoy often joked that they should have bought stock in Hallmark for all the cards she sent to so many people. She did not sit still for long and was referred to as the Energizer Bunny by some family members and friends. She was a dedicated friend to many. Ilda went to her eternal home at the age of 93 on May 15, 2024, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. She leaves behind her three children and their families: Douglas and Marilyn Van Zee of Pella Scott and Brittany Van Zee of Sully Ivan Morgan and Evan Van Zee Erin and Kyle Whalley of Liberty, MO Nolan and Nicholas Melody and Tom Miller of Winterset Emily and Miguel Mendez of Norwalk Briela and Bianca Jill and Sam Vande Weerd of Pella Bailey and Alex Van Roekel of Jupiter, FL Avery, Ryker and baby boy due in July Zach and Hannah Vande Weerd of Waukee Ross Vande Weerd of Austin, TX
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Joyce (Van Zee) and her husband, Ray Vos of Pella; and two nieces and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy, her parents, parents-in-law, Bill and Bertha Van Zee, and step-mother-in-law Etta Van Zee; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Helen (Van Zee) and Marvin Smith; and Eli Douglas Van Zee, great-grandson. She was a member of Joy Circle at Trinity, Pella Women’s Club, Gideons Auxiliary, and a Reach to Recovery Volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and a Hospice volunteer.

Pooh Bear. Bah-Pooh. Grandpooh.
This doesn't feel real.
I can't even explain how much I'll miss you. You had your Masters in sarcasm, and in turn,
I was schooled well in smartass comments.
Thanks for that. You didn't bat an eyelash at your 8 year old granddaughter doing your makeup,
except for after of course, to show off a job well done. A visit was never complete without you grossing us out,
talking about how hot Grandma was and squeezing her butt. I acted like it was gross, but secretly hoped I'd be "old" someday
and my future husband would still think that way of me.
Spoiler alert: I'm pretty confident he will. I already miss donkey face and you threatening to "Take us out back."
So much love and laughter in my 28 years was credited to you.
I love you.
Tee Dee Heart over and out.

In 2010, Martin moved back to Pella and worked as the manager of Dr. Salami’s Restaurant. He was accomplished as a cook and particularly on the grill. Many customers would request that Martin grill their steaks! With the closing of the restaurant Martin began working for In’t Veld’s Meat Market. Martin and Lacy were best friends and soul mates. In 2022, Martin began a new endeavor establishing Drone Shot Photography, LLC. This mixed his love of photography with an equally strong love for anything remote control (R.C.). Martin possessed many skills in the outdoors. He could always find the most mushrooms hunting in the woods. He also liked riding motorcycles and 4 wheelers. He once won a motorcross race in Kahoka, Missouri where the trophy was over 3 feet tall, and he was especially proud of this. Everyone who knew Martin understood that he was an accomplished fisherman. He would fish anywhere he had an opportunity. Lacy and Martin religiously made a trip to Highlandville, IA to camp and trout fish. This spot was their refuge and rejuvenation. Lacy and Martin also loved to garden together, growing grapes and raspberries- and making jam in the fall with all their bounty. Martin’s favorite location in Pella was Big Rock Park. He spent countless hours there. On March 14, 2024, Martin untimely passed away at the age of 43. Anita Whitaker - September 04, 1933 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Pella)
Obituary Preview: Anita S. Whitaker, formerly of Pella, Iowa passed away on February 16 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa at the age of 90. She was born on September 4, 1933, to Dwight Robert Sherman and Lucille Lawhon Sherman in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was their only child but spent her childhood surrounded by many cousins during the depression and dustbowl in Oklahoma.
Anita earned a degree in home economics from Southwestern College in Oklahoma, and married her high school sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Whitaker in 1954. They had three daughters and a son. Anita and Dick lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Massachusetts during their early years of marriage, as Dick finished his education and served for several years as an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church. In 1967, they relocated to Pella, Iowa, where Dick took a teaching position at Central College. Pella was their home for the next 55 years, until Dick passed in 2022. Anita has been living in a memory care facility near her daughter in Ames since his death. Anita was primarily a homemaker throughout her life. She also worked as a secretary, did in-home childcare, and worked for many years at the Pella Day Care Center. She was involved in the League of Women Voters and the Central College Women's Auxiliary. Anita was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church and particularly enjoyed working with local outreach programs, such as the food shelf, the quilting ministry, and the friendships of those in her adult fellowship group. She also volunteered for many years visiting nursing home patients with dementia. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, cooking and coffee with friends, and most of all going for long walks all over Pella holding hands with Dick, which embarrassed her teenage kids immensely!
While Pella was their home base, the Whitakers travelled extensively, including a year in the Middle East when the kids ranged in age from 3 to 15, a year in California, several years in New Jersey later in life, and many shorter trips to the Middle East, Europe, India and Tanzania. In addition, they made sure the kids saw as much of the US as possible with frequent camping trips in an army surplus tent.
As we wrote about all the things she did in life, it didn’t quite capture the thing that most made her Anita/mom/Grandma Nita. She was a sweet, adorable, sometimes sassy little woman, who never hesitated to reach out a hand to help and seemed to love everyone she met. With her big smile, sparkly eyes, and kind spirit, she leaves many friends behind who will miss her dearly.
Anita is survived by her daughters Sheri (Dave) Krumm and Lori (Mike) Thomas, son Rick (Char) Whitaker, son-in-law Steve Goode, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, parents and daughter Meri.
Memorials may be given for Peace Lutheran Church or your local food bank.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Pella.
A reception with the family will be held after the service on Wednesday at the church.
