Clifford M. Schimmelpfenning - May 11, 1939 - April 21, 2022

Departed: 04/21/2022 (Appleton)
Obituary Preview: Clifford Michael Schimmelpfenning, 82, from Shawano, was reunited with his loving wife Marion on Thursday, April 21, 2022.  He was born May 11, 1939, the son of the late Walter and Anna (Smits) Schimmelpfenning.
Cliff had a passion for the outdoors and in his younger days he spent much of his free time hunting and fishing.  A dad in the truest sense of the word, he could fix anything, and was often found putzing in the garage or basement as he always had a project he was working on.  His yard was his sanctuary and he loved feeding the many squirrels, birds and other wildlife that came to visit.  Anyone who knew him knew of his love to dance.  He and Marion could often be found on the dance floor of any picnic or festival in the summer.  In the winters, they would take trips to the casino to listen to music, dance, and play the penny machines.  He had a twinkle in his eye, a constant smile, and a greeting for everyone he met, and he never forgot a face.  The life of the party, he loved to entertain, and many times could be spotted playing the spoons when he wasn’t dancing.  He was the quintessential social butterfly.
Cliff’s love of music and dancing could only be rivaled by his love of family.  His children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were a tremendous source of joy for him.  He loved to spend time with his family and to share stories.  He was happiest when he could take the grandkids down to the dock and fish with them, even if he had to clean the catch for the day.
Cliff is survived by his two daughters Debra Winter and Donna Koebe (fiancé Joseph Harlow); four grandchildren, James Schimmelpfenning, Jessica Utley (Wyat), Joseph Koebe, and Kandra Winter; five great-grandchildren, Braelyn, Brianna, Brady, Laurel & Baby Utley; other relatives and many friends.
Family would like to thank the staff from ThedaCare Home Hospice and Aspire Assisted Living for their wonderful care of Cliff in his final months.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Valley Funeral Home in Appleton on Monday, May 2, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 1:00 p.m.

After a brief retirement from the cockpit Roger returned to racing in the early ‘90s where he won an incredible 17 of 20 feature races one season at Chilton. George J. Wicihowski - March 12, 1939 - April 06, 2022

Departed: 04/06/2022 (Appleton)
Obituary Preview: George Joseph Clarence Wicihowski, age 83, of Appleton, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2022, with his family by his side. On March 12, 1939, George was born in Manitowoc to the late Alex and Irene (Blashka) Wicihowski. After graduating from Lincoln High School in 1957, he proudly served his country as Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. On February 8, 1964, George married the love of his life, Mary Rasmussen.
George and Mary relocated to Appleton, WI. Making his wife happy, he bought the house she loved without seeing the inside. They enjoyed 13 years together until the time of her death. Upon which time, George took on becoming both Father and Mother to their three young children. He faced this challenge with strength and determination – the way George faced life.
George’s career path always led him to the grocery business. It started prior to serving his country, where he was the Assistant Manager at the ABC Supermarket. After his service, George worked at Treasure Island as the Store Manager. As his career progressed, he worked for S.C. Shannon as a Candy Buyer and Merchandiser. He would advance to E.J. Brach Corp., where he was promoted to National Account Manager after a year with the company. He won several awards for being Salesman and Vendor of the year throughout his career. George’s success was due to his hard work, strength, and determination.
George was an active member of St. Thomas More Church. His strong faith and belief in God were significant aspects of his life. Over the years, he enjoyed participating in bible retreats, bible group studies, and organizing gatherings for the parish community. In 1975, George joined the Lion’s Club, through which he was able to help others with disabilities, including the blind and the less fortunate. George had a competitive nature that drove him to succeed in raising awareness and money for others. George had a natural ability for leadership. If he was involved in a project, rest assured he was in charge. Examples of this were shown by organizing brat fries and selling roses and geraniums. George was always willing to give the shirt off his back or lend a helping hand to family, friends, and neighbors.
George had a deep love for his furry friends. They always ate like kings, often sharing his steak or making them their own. George also enjoyed many activities such as weekly ‘breakfasts with the boys’, annual trips to the Indy 500, golfing, bowling, fishing, and playing horseshoes. He was an avid sports lover, including all Wisconsin teams and the Dodgers. Above all, he was the number one fan at his grandkids sporting events.
George’s outgoing personality, great sense of humor, and larger-than-life presence were felt by all. He loved to laugh and joke around, making people feel like they mattered. George was very proud of being a marine and often reminded us, “Once a Marine, always a Marine.” George’s essence will long live on through his family, friends, and those he touched. Until we meet up again, this is George Joseph Clarence Wicihowski signing out.
He is survived by his children; Amy Wicihowski, Mark (Vicki) Wicihowski and Lynn (Jason) Schmitz, grandchildren; Gavin Wicihowski, Alex Wicihowski, Madi Wicihowski, Laken Schmitz (Brittani), Landon Schmitz and Alexa Schmitz (Adam). George is further survived by his brothers and sisters; Rose Marie Stumpf, Jerry (Kathy) Wicihowski, Bob (Linda) Wicihowski, Gene (Jody) Wicihowski, Karen Berzinsky, Shirley Crabtree, Mary (Tom) Tomasik, and Dave (Kathy) Wicihowski, sister-in-law, Betty Rasmussen as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends, especially his special friend, Linda Gleason.
Preceding George in death are his parents, his wife, Mary, brother, Don (Sue) Wicihowski, brothers in law; Tom Crabtree, John Berzinsky, Larry Stumpf, Dick Endries, Aaron Rasmussen, Mark (Janice) Rasmussen, sister-in-law, Mavis Pollack, and not to forget his beloved canine friends: Kooky, Mugzie, Sammy, Duke, and Snowball.
Family and friends may gather on Monday, April 11, 2022, beginning at 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, Appleton, and again on Tuesday, April 12, 2022, beginning at 9:30 am until the time of service at 10:30 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 1810 N. McDonald St., Appleton with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 1:45 pm. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. To the staff at Heartwood Homes Senior Living – Words cannot express our gratitude for the love and care you provided our Dad. You amaze us, and we thank you!

Mark C. Rosenthal - August 26, 1965 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Appleton)
Obituary Preview: On the morning of Friday, April 1, Mark Rosenthal of Gresham, WI peacefully left this life after a courageous battle with cancer. Mark was born on August 23, 1965 in Madison to parents Marilyn Rosenthal (neé Schmidt) and Donald Rosenthal.
Mark spent most of his childhood in Appleton, WI and often referred to the memories of growing up in his kid-filled neighborhood near Erb Park as the happiest of times. After graduating from Appleton West High School in 1983, Mark went on to attend Lawrence University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy. While his career ultimately took a different path, Mark had scored exceptionally well on the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), a complete non-surprise to anyone familiar with Mark’s brain. Mark had a lifelong love for knowledge and learning. Talking to Mark, you could always count on learning something new and interesting. Some of Mark’s most treasured memories were competing in Lawrence University’s Annual Midwest Trivia Contests with his best friend and fellow Armadillo Association teammate, John Quigley.
Mark’s sense of humor was cherished (or tolerated) by all who had the chance to know him. He was known for his goofiness and quick wit. Under the darkest and most trying circumstances, Mark was there to bring levity and laughter when it was needed most — even on his deathbed.
Mark was loved by so many. He is survived by his mother, Marilyn Rosenthal, Gresham; sister, Jill Rosenthal (Robert Askins), Oshkosh; niece, Courtney Beyer of Chicago, and nephew,  Zachary Beyer of Milwaukee. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Donald.

Thomas "Tom" W. Fox - August 01, 1940 - March 16, 2022

Departed: 03/16/2022 (Appleton)
Obituary Preview: “There’s a wondrous Golden Harbor, far beyond the setting sun, Where a gallant ship may anchor when her fighting days are done”—author unknown
On March 16th, 2022, Thomas Wayne Fox, age 81, set course for the peaceful waters of heaven where he will live eternally.  Tom is survived by his loving bride of 53 years, Gloria Fox; son David (Rose) Fox; daughter Barbara (Jeffrey) Malicki and daughter Susan (Chad) Billings; seven grandchildren he adored, Lauren, Katelyn and Madelyn Fox; Ryan and Brandon Malicki; Thomas and Hannah Billings; as well as many brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews and many amazing friends.  His loving family will proudly steer the ship now, driven with enduring memories of an adventurous life and mission to continue his incredible legacy.
Born to DeWayne and Maxine Fox in 1940, Tom was raised with sister Patricia in Elmhurst, IL where he lived until he married Gloria in 1968. As a graduate of Northwestern University, Tom’s first job was with IBM, followed by 20+ years at ITW, and an early retirement at age 57 following several years at various consulting firms where his knowledge of IT systems, supply-chain management and business operations was highly valued. While his work ethic was unparalleled, his greatest joy was when he was behind the wheel on one of his many boats, the sun glistening on the lake, and his family surrounding him.
Tom was a man of few words. However, he was a man that gave selflessly to his family and friends. Always in search of a project, Tom was up to almost any task. His mechanical skills were remarkable but so was his fierce sensibility, practicality and integrity. His legacy lives on in David (aka, mini-Tom), who shares Tom’s love for anything with an engine and activities on the water.  Barb shares her father’s affinity for business, investing and numbers.  Sue’s passion for design/construction grew from an environment where learning how things worked was commonplace.  His legacy will endure through his beloved seven grandchildren for whom he had immense pride, joy and never-ending sense of responsibility to provide for.  He commanded big hugs, funny jokes and taught practical skills on how to navigate life.
As Tom docks at his final heavenly port, his family will celebrate a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Tom is untethered now and will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 23rd, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 7973 WI-57 Bailey’s Harbor, Wisconsin 54202, from 11:00am – 2:00pm, service to follow at 2:00pm.
If you’d like to honor Tom’s spirit of helping others, please consider making a donation to: Bargins Unlimited, PO Box 1037, Sister Bay, WI 54234 (in Memory of Tom Fox).

Herman Cyril Griesbach - September 09, 1957 - March 13, 2022

Departed: 03/13/2022 (Appleton)
Obituary Preview: Herman Cyril Griesbach, age 64, of Appleton, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, March 13, 2022. He was born on September 9, 1957, to the late Merlin and Willa (Hudson) Griesbach. He married his best friend, Patty (Derks) Griesbach on August 11, 1979, and for over 42 years they created a life in the country surrounded by the love of family and lifelong friends. Herman was one of the most talented automotive technicians in town! He was born with a wrench in his hand; crawling under cars at a young age, learning from his Dad how to fix anything that was broken. His work never ended – he always had a project – whether remodeling a house, building a garage from the ground up, or tearing apart a car. He taught anyone who was interested, especially his grandchildren, how to put humpty back together again. He also enjoyed splitting wood and spending time at his cottage up north. For over 20 years he worked at Bergstrom Automotive as a Certified Master Technician. While he thought cars were cool, fire trucks were even cooler to him, so he began working at Pierce Manufacturing in 2008 until he retired in 2020. If you ever needed help, he was there without question or judgment. He would give you the shirt off his back, unless he was wearing the one that said, “I do what I want.” He was the life of the party and if you were standing next to him at a bonfire you might hear him say, “Prost!” Herman loved Taco Tuesdays so he could enjoy his jalapenos! He was everybody’s hero and jokester!
He is lovingly survived by his wife Patty; daughters Jamie Griesbach (Michael Kaul) and her children Brayden, Jaksen, and Madysen Diedrich; Ann Griesbach (Tim Driscoll) and her children David, Rebekah, and Nataleigh Malueg; son and daughter-in-law SFC Jeremy and Kari Griesbach and their children Austin, Matthew, and Alayna. His sisters Lois Baldwin and Patty (John) Jacobson; sister-in-law Kathy (Jack) Balke and brothers-in-law Rick (Julie) Derks and Erv (Sue) Fischer. He is further survived by his father-in-law Bob Derks and mother-in-law Jan Wolfinger, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, many close friends, and his fur Grandbabies Storm, Scarlett, Marley, Koda, Eve, Lucy, Lucky, and Chelsea.
He is preceded in death by his parents Merlin and Willa Griesbach; sister Barb Pamperin; sisters-in-law Cheryl Fischer and Barb Derks; brother-in-law Tim Hanig; and step-father-in-law Carl Wolfinger, along with many other friends and family members.

The Art of Crafting Obituaries

Writing obituaries is a delicate art which requires empathy, compassion, and eloquence. It involves summarising someone's life, recognising their accomplishments, and acknowledging the vacuum their absence will create. The tone needs to be respectful and professional, yet warm and personal.

Benefits of a Well-Written Obituary

  • It aids in the grieving process: crafting an obituary can bring an intense amount of comfort to those left behind, allowing room for closure and acceptance.
  • It recognises the dead: a well-crafted obituary is a testament of a life lived, a way to acknowledge their existence and remember their influence.
  • It becomes a record of lineage: obituaries often serve as historical documents, helping generations to trace their roots and heritage.
