Joe H. Keim - November 19, 1935 - January 29, 2021

Departed: 01/29/2021 (Davenport)
Obituary Preview: Joe Keim will be remembered as someone who never slowed down in his later years -- partly because he never went anywhere very fast. He always had a destination and he always had one more thing he had to get done. But his destinations and his chores never got in the way of taking time for anyone: family, neighbors, and friends. And, for Joe Keim, a stranger was simply a friend he didn’t know yet.
Joe Keim passed away on January. 29th, 2021 on his farm near Davenport, Nebraska at the age of 85. He had spent the morning having coffee with friends, getting a haircut, and driving a friend home from the hospital. His final moments were on his tractor -- where he always felt most at home.
Joe Keim was born at home on another farm near Davenport, Nebraska to John Keim and Mildred (Marshall) Keim on November 19, 1935. When his grandfather Henry Keim died in 1941, his parents moved the family to the farm just west of Davenport on Highway 4. Joe was five, and the house and farm would be his home for the next 80 years.
Joe attended a one-room schoolhouse, the Ranch Country School until seventh grade when it closed. This meant he didn’t have to take the 8th-grade exams in Nelson like his older sister. Instead, he started eighth grade at Davenport Community School in 1947 and graduated from Davenport High School in 1953.
During the winter months, when farm work was slower, he attended the Lincoln School of Commerce in Lincoln, NE. However, his father’s failing health meant that he found himself spending more time taking care of the farm.
Joe met Georgia Lou Bice of Carelton, Nebraska, while in high school. He said she was “Really a good looking gal.” She stole his heart and they married on November 25th, 1956, moving into his parents’ home on the farm as they moved into a place in town.
Their four children, David, Kathy, James, and Patricia were the focus of many of his activities when he wasn’t farming. His children fondly remember nights lit up by combines and grain trucks, sandwiches on a pickup tailgate, and the smell of harvest corn and coffee from a Thermos. They say the land remembers. If it does, the land remembers a man who loved his work as much as his wife, was blessed to share that work with both his father and his oldest son, grew his crops in rows that were as straight and honest as the man himself, and stayed as close to that land as he could for the whole of his life.
His commitments included serving as a member and a few years as President of the Davenport School Board. He was also a member of the Davenport Lions Club and an active member of the Davenport United Methodist Church. Joe described himself as man who “never did much.” But family, neighbors, and friends will remember him as someone who did almost everything -- if there was anything or anyone who needed help.
His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and children of nieces, nephews, and neighbors that he loved like grandchildren.
Perhaps his only regret was not having more time to see them all grow into the kind and caring adults he knows they will be. Joe is survived by his son, David Keim, wife, Janice (Nunnenkamp) Keim, granddaughter Dona Keim, and great-granddaughter, Briella Keim of Sutton, NE; his daughter, Kathy Keim of Bartlesville, OK; his son, James Keim, wife, Christi (Ehresman) Keim, and grandchildren Mason and Ava Keim of Lincoln, NE; his daughter, Trish (Keim) Thorell, husband, Mike Thorell, and twin granddaughters, Elin and Olivia Thorell of Omaha, NE; his sisters Margaret Keim of Lincoln and Betty Keim of Yonkers, New York, his sister-in-law Helen Garrels and husband Dennis Garrels, of Grand Island, NE.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Keim, his parents John and Mildred (Marshall) Keim; and his sister Nancy (Keim) Sanburg and Ron Sanburg of Kansas City; and sister-in-law, Wanda Tegtmeier and brother-in-law, Oscar Tegtmeier of Davenport.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 5, 2021 at 1:30 PM at the Davenport United Methodist Church. The service will be recorded and possibilities for a livestream are being explored. Out of respect for Joe’s wishes, the family requests family and close friends who attend to observe social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Extended viewing times will be available on Thursday from 1:00-8:00 at the funeral home in Davenport and again on Friday morning before the funeral for those who wish to avoid contact at the funeral.
Memorial gifts will be designated later in honor of Joe and Georgia Keim by the family to benefit the Davenport community as Joe and Georgia had a long list of things they enjoyed supporting.

Obituary Preview: Donald Gene Vorce was born June 13, 1931 in Tobias, Nebraska to Clarence Marion Vorce and Maude Amy (Eastman) Vorce.  He attended Tobias Public Schools, played basketball for the Tobias High School Tigers, and graduated high school (at age 16) with the class of 1948.  Following graduation, Don spent time working on the railroad before enlisting in the United States Navy in January 1951.  His Korean War experiences in the Pacific theater with the Navy’s 7th Fleet included assignments aboard the USS New Jersey, USS Wisconsin and USS Iowa battleships.  Portions of his Navy service were spent in San Diego, Japan, and the Marshall Islands, where he was a witness to history on March 1, 1954, when the first Hydrogen explosive device was detonated at the Bikini-Eniwetok Atomic testing area.  Radio communication was Don’s specialty. Having received training in Morse Code, a portion of his job was decoding encrypted radio messages for routing to the appropriate Naval officers.  Don was honorably discharged in December 1954 as a Radioman Petty Officer 2nd Class.  He returned to Nebraska, settling in the Davenport area and began his farming career. Don was confirmed and baptized at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Davenport, on February 14, 1956.  He served on numerous boards and was a member of the church’s Voter’s Assembly. In November 1965, he was introduced to Arlene Wiechman.  Realizing that God had made them for each other, on April 10, 1966, Don and Arlene were married in Barnes, Kansas.  Their union was blessed with two children. Don farmed until 1991, when he and Arlene moved into town.  He continued to help other farmers during planting and harvest seasons. Don’s love of Morse Code led to an amateur radio hobby which allowed him to make contacts with other enthusiasts in all 50 states and around the world, using his locally famous “N0NEN” call sign.  He loved to play the button accordion, and brought joy to many with his musical performances at senior centers, nursing homes and Czech festivals. He served Davenport VFW Post 10579 as its Commander for many years, and also Davenport American Legion Post 335 as Adjutant. Don’s kindness, sense of humor, service to others, honesty and integrity all combined to leave a legacy that touched more lives then he could have ever realized.

Georgia L Keim - May 11, 1938 - February 08, 2016

Departed: 02/08/2016 (Davenport)
Obituary Preview: Georgia Keim will be remembered as a woman of faith, family, friends, and fellowship. She felt a gratitude and obligation to family, neighbors, church, and community and therefore held a deep conviction that one should always "be present" for others. Georgia Keim passed away on Feb. 8, 2016 at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, Nebraska at the age of 77 years. Her husband was by her side, as he has been for their nearly 60 years of marriage -- supporting, comforting, and cherishing her. Georgia Lou Keim was born in Hebron, NE to Harold and Wilma (Bailey) Bice on May 11, 1938. She attended school in Carleton, NE where she grew up with her sisters Wanda (Bice) Tegtmeier and Helen (Bice) Garrels. Before her senior year, Carleton's school closed. She graduated from Bruning Public School in May 1956. While she worked for the hospital in Hebron the summer after graduation, she always knew she was "destined for the farm." While in high school, she met Joe Keim from Davenport, NE who thought she was "really a good looking gal." She stole his heart. They were married on November 25, 1956 at the First Methodist Church in Carleton. She was 18 1/2 years old when she arrived at her new home in Davenport and was immediately tasked with cooking for all the men who were helping her husband shell corn. Their first child was born less than a year later. Their four children, David, Kathy, James, and Patricia were the focus of many of her activities. She was a cub scout den mother, a softball coach, a 4-H leader, and a volunteer/chaperon for the many speech, drama, music, and sports activities of her children. She embraced the mantle of "homemaker" which included discing, cutting stalks, butchering chickens, gathering and selling eggs, separating and selling cream, cooking for everyone her husband invited home, and caring for her family. She was an active member of her community, serving United Methodist Women, the American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, the Nuckolls County Extension Club, and the Davenport Library Board. Her commitments also included serving as President of the Carleton Alumni Association and more than ten years as Co-President of the Davenport Women's Club. After her children were grown, she worked outside the home. She helped start “Country Catering,” that was part of many celebrations and memorials between 1989 and 1994. Later, she cooked for the Davenport Senior Center and oversaw the expansion of its food service from Davenport to all of Thayer County. For many years she also served the community by opening her bed and breakfast in Davenport to anyone who needed a few more rooms for guests. Perhaps her greatest joy, though, was spending time with her grandchildren, her great-granddaughter and the children of nieces, nephews, and neighbors that she loved like grandchildren. Her only regret was not having more time to see them all grow into the wonderful adults she knows they will be. Georgia is survived by her husband, Joe Keim, of Davenport, NE; her son, David Keim, wife, Janice (Nunnenkamp) Keim, granddaughter Dona Keim, and great-granddaughter, Briella Keim of Sutton, NE; her daughter, Kathy Keim of Bartlesville, OK; her son, James Keim, wife, Christi (Ehresman) Keim, and grandchildren Mason and Ava Keim of Lincoln, NE; her daughter, Trish (Keim) Thorell, husband, Mike Thorell, and twin granddaughters, Elin and Olivia Thorell of Omaha, NE; her sister Helen Garrels and husband Dennis Garrels, of Grand Island, NE; and her sisters-in-law Margaret Keim of Lincoln, NE and Betty Keim of New York. Georgia was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Wilma (Bailey) Bice; her sister Wanda Tegtmeier and Oscar Tegtmeier of Davenport; and her sister-in-law Nancy (Keim) Sanburg and Ron Sanburg of Kansas City. Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016 at 10:30 AM at the Davenport United Methodist Church.
The family requests that memorial gifts be made in Georgia's honor to the Davenport First United Methodist Church or the Davenport Community Center.

Dale Pfeifer - February 10, 1935 - December 05, 2015

Departed: 12/05/2015 (Davenport)
Obituary Preview: Russell Dale Pfeifer was born February 10, 1935 in Galion, Ohio to Ruth (Minor) and Russell A Pfeifer.  He died December 5, 2015, at 80 years of age, at home.
As a boy he grew up in Galion, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. Then the family moved to Vermillion, South Dakota where his father started a new career.  As ministers do move around, four years later they moved to Helvey, Nebraska.  There he met a farm girl.  After 2 years of college, Dale decided he did not want to follow his dad's career, so he ran off to join the US Navy.
Two years later he was the preacher's son who married the farmer's daughter, on June 16, 1954.  Sallie Shane and Dale were married for 58 years, and four children were born to this union.  After 2 years of military life, the couple settled down to farming, and raising cattle and hogs, near Daykin, Nebraska.  Then on to a dairy farm near Alexandria, Nebraska, also doing custom hay work. The family moved to the village of Alexandria, where he owned and operated Dale's Service, Gas & Tires.  He was also rural mail carrier and clerk in the post office, and Postmaster in Belvidere, Nebraska.  In 1980, Dale and family moved to Davenport, Nebraska, where he was Postmaster for 20 years.
Dale loved making things work, automotive or electronic.  Then, once he made something work, he took it apart and changed it.  His first love was cars, and in 1964 he bought his first Nomad.  From then on, the Nomad was king.  Life at the Pfeifer home was trips to the salvage yard for parts. Then Nomad Club activities, all over the USA, Nova Scotia, and Canada.  Oh what fun he did have.
Then came retirement, and plans for restoration projects in his dream garage.  But a year later plans changed and a different direction was in store.  A slowly progressing muscle disease was a life changing diagnosis.  Dale fought the deteriorating episodes and a new focus began.  Computers and photography became new hobbies.  Dale could make his computer do things no one designed it to do.  He could add people to photos even when they hadn't been there.  He rigged a remote for his camera to use when his fingers no longer would bend.
His power chair took him lots & lots of places--but he couldn't run away from home, because he couldn't cross the railroad tracks.  He got stuck in the sand in California, and stuck in the mud in Nevada.  He rolled down Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco.  He did surprise folks in Silver Dollar City when he took a corner around a tree on  2 wheels.  But he had the most fun spinning circles on the main floor of Pershing Auditorium at an Eastern Star fancy do.  He and his chair danced with his granddaughters at their weddings.
He enjoyed his new tv/computer room on the back porch.  He listened to blue-grass gospel music and watched netflix daily.
The day before he died he went for a ride.  He drove his chair out the back door, down the ramp, across the back yard, and went 2 yards over to check out the garage project at Littrell's.  Sallie wouldn't let him drive in the front door on the carpet, so he came in the back door, was lifted and settled in his big chair.  Then Sallie could hose off the mud, pine needles, leaves, and chunks of grass gathered on his adventure.  The fact that he was wearing only a silk night shirt, no socks, and didn't fasten his seatbelt, never bothered him in the least.  He just said he wanted to check out the project, and enjoyed the ride.  Sallie was scared he'd fall out of his chair going through the mud.
Dale served on many boards in the Davenport community, including Lion's Club, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, United Methodist Church treasurer, and was Web Master for the Chevrolet Nomad Association.
Dale always said you teach your children by setting a good example, and he always did.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his much loved grandson, James Cannon.  He is survived by his wife Sallie, daughters Laurie and her husband Gary Johnson, Carol Cannon, Darla Pfeifer, son Darrin and wife Kelly Pfeifer, 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, many cousins, a community of friends, and 500 members of the Nomad world in the USA, Canada, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.
