Obituary Preview: IN LOVING MEMORY OF EUGENE GORDON Eugene was born on December 8, 1930, at Newark City Hospital, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Robert Gordon Sr. and Leola Maddux. Through his parents, Eugene developed a love for nature and the sea. Henceforth becoming an avid hunter and fisherman. Eugene and his father once purchased a fishing boat and dubbed it, “The Gordon I.” Eugene always proudly talked about their hunting dogs (beagles)his two favorites being “Cap and Judy”. He loved the taste of a good piece of venison, rabbit or squirrel and even though he enjoyed a nice portion of flounder, his true delight would be to gift him with a porgie!

As a young boy, Eugene would always come up with new ideas to make money. He once created his own business as a shoe- shine boy to help his family at times.

An exceptional student, Eugene attended the “Charleton Street School”, Newark, New Jersey and received his diploma on January 29,1946. He soon began an occupation as a Laborer Carpentry Worker for the company Earnst Smith, Newark, New Jersey until his entry into the United States Army in October 1951. Eugene’s service in the Korean War, earned the rank of Coroporal. Upon Separation and an Honorable discharge from military service, Eugene was awarded medals of honor. “National Defense Medal”, “Korean War Service with bronze stars”, and for United Nations Service (Korea). Eugene remained in Tuckerton, New Jersey until illness and age, brought him to Long Island, New York, to live out the rest of his days surrounded by his daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Eugene had become a life-time member with VFW Post 4927- 34 Lamport Avenue, Port Jefferson Station, New York. He not only enjoyed the comradeship of his fellow veterans, but always expressed the feeling of respect, that his opinions mattered. Eugene spent the rest of his days making memories with family and friends.

On the night of April 18, 2024, Eugene Gordon peacefully passed away in his home, at the vintage age of 93 years old.

Eugene is survived by his daughter Delores Gordon (Who he affectionately called D. Sometimes Demon if it was a political debate). Yet, always told her lovingly, “I am so glad you are my girl!” Son In Law Roland L. Durham (His best buddy and fellow jokester). 13 grandchildren; Paul, Jeffrey, Lynziel, Jarrad, Skai, Addonnis, Jazzmin, Mykell, Ty’kwan, Ty’nazha, Robert, Roshawn and their spouses; 2 great grandchildren: Jayshawn James Smith Jr.(Oompah) and Julius Kash’mere King Berry-Stephens(fatman potatoe skins). A host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. A very special mention; Nephew Elike Thomas Reeves Gordon (who was raised by Eugene and Grandad). Special friends; Frankie Greene, Kim Terry, Lorraine Phillips, Iranette Garrison.

Eugene is preceded in death by his parents; Siblings John Gordon, Benjamin Gordon, Robert Gordon Jr. Niece; Dawn E. Levi, Nephew in law; Stanley L. Levi, Great Nieces; Sherri Levi, Stacie L. Levi, Candace E. Levi. ~I did not know what you meant to me It took a lot of years for me to see We went through so much together Laughter, pain, you made me feel better You held us both up and took a stand Before I knew it you held my hand You’ve taught me so much, but never goodbyes Cause now I’m left with tears in my eyes But the sun came the very next day, and as I wiped all of my tears away My heart celebrated you with joy and glee, AT LEAST I GOT YOU TO 93!

He was raised with his sister by a newly single yet strong mother. Merrill was 2 years old when he fell out of the 5th floor bathroom window. As his mother was crying about her baby, he climbed back up the fire escape and told his mother “Mommy don’t worry I fall” and on that day he was given the nickname “Kave Man.” Growing up, Kave was a book and street-smart kid with a soft speaking voice that made friends easily. Some made the mistake of taking his kindness for weakness and underestimated him. Many of those doubters tried him and experienced the “mess around and found out” that lived inside. Yes, I said it, my brother had hands. He was kind to others when kindness was needed. He was protective of others if he believed that protection was needed, and he was respectful, fearless, protective, adventurous, and helpful. Merrill always looked good! His love for fashion was unmatched. He attended PS 70 Elementary School in the Bronx, N.Y. until the young family of 3 moved to Roosevelt, New York in 1982. There he attended Washington Rose Elementary School and Roosevelt Jr./Sr. High School in Roosevelt, NY. As a young adult, Merrill was known to have the “gift of gab”. He had a beautiful smile and possessed the ability to speak to people both young and old. Kave was able to connect people with resources to help them and that is what made him stand out in a crowd. He was employed by different companies for short periods of time, but his free spirit and hustle mentality lead him down the path of entrepreneurship. He never seemed to be affected by stumbles or setbacks. Though sometimes the path was rocky and caused him to stumble, his falls were never a match against his determination and tenacity to succeed. Merrill relocated to Albany, NY to start the life he always wanted. He raised a family of 4 pit bulls (Carmela, Diva, Envi, Carmelo) that proceeded him in death and a Yorke (Bentley). Merrill also made friends that became part of his family. Merrill obtained his Class A CDL and his license for Cosmology. He proudly purchased his first home in Schenectady, N.Y.Inspired by life on the road and his unwavering love for fashion and styling, Merrill founded his company All Shades of Beauty LLC with plans to diversify his brand by adding a hair distribution company and mobile hair salon, Merrill was also an author. He wrote a book about the number 1 Hustling Diva in his life, his mother. He created a television series about all the other “divas, “ as he called them in his family, including the ones he met along the way. So if Kave called you a “Diva,” you were rated “tens across the board” as he would say. “If you weren’t living up to your known status, he would say “get it together” or “put it together.” Kave was a dreamer and creative soul & he lived he laughed he lovedand will forever be loved. He was preceded in death by his mother Deborah A Carter Bell, father Merrill, Marcia & Boe Hardy, Robert Myrant, Leola Duffy, Robin Barton Carter, and Elaine Porter. He leaves to mourn his passing his loving sister Kanise V. He was one of seven children born to Jose Erazo and Susana Cotto. He proudly served in The United States Army during the period of the Korean War. He was passionate about his Puerto Rican heritage and especially proud of Puerto Rican baseball player Roberto Clemente. He admired Roberto Clemente for his groundbreaking contributions to the sport and his philanthropy. He was a big time Yankees fan. He was peaceable, amicable, jovial, benevolent, generous, and trusting. He was also very family orientated and a flirt! He will be greatly missed by those who survive him. Obituary Preview: Neil Andre “Pockets” Service, 55, passed away unexpectedly on September 13, 2023. Born on June 23, 1968, in Kingston Jamaica to Norma Scarlett and Charles Service. Neil came to the states as a young boy and was raised in Queens. Although he resided in Long Island, he also lived and spent time in Brooklyn and Connecticut. Neil attended John Browne High School where he obtained his high school diploma in 1986. One of his passions was cooking, so he decided to attend Project Renewal for Culinary Arts, to get his license. He then gained employment as a prep cook at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for a short while, and then at International House of New York for many years after. The “Chocolate Emeril” loved to cook anything, and he would put his love in all that he made and then shared it with those he loved.

In addition to his cooking talent, Neil loved to D.J. Although not done professionally, he loved to D.J. for both friends and family at many gatherings. He also loved to drive and chauffeur clients. He was a personal driver and assistant to many high-profile clients such as Gayle King, Bow Wow, and Angela Bassett just to name a few.

MR SERVICE AT YOUR SERVICE. Neil was a very kind, jovial and charismatic person that was always willing to help his family, friends or anyone that needed it. People naturally gravitated to him with his altruistic spirit. He was a young man at heart and friends and family were the things that represented Neil the most. Neil leaves to cherish in his memory, his mother Norma Scarlett of New Jersey; father Charles Service of Jamaica WI ; his daughter, Janai Willis of Hartford, CT; son, Jonell Smith of Long Island, NY; a bonus child Jasmine Bines of Bronx NY; two granddaughters, Sumiyah Hood of Hartford CT and Ariella Smith of Long Island; sisters, Annmarie Rattigan (Ainsworth) of Queens, Sharon and Michelle Service both of Queens, Brittany Service of Kingston; brothers, Charles and Claude Service of Kingston, and Damian Service of Florida; a special Aunt Laurel Johnson of Long Island NY; Aunt Neasee Johnson of Jamaica WI; Cousins Ricardo Baxter of Long Island NY; and Latoya Nadine Williams of Jamaica WI; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who love and will miss him dearly. Donald best known as Keith, Eldee 0r EL was very funny and protective of his family and friends. He was a generous man always willing to give a helping hand. He enjoyed socializing and loved playing the lotto and numbers. He lived his life on his own terms and cherished time spent with family.

Donald worked as a Cleaner for the Board of Education for over 18 years. He retired early due to illness but remained active as caregiver for his father until his untimely death.

Donald was preceded in death by his Mother Estella, his brothers John, Anthony, Joseph and Rodney, sister Natalia.

Donald is survived by his father John, brothers Michael and David, daughter Shaleen Awong (Phil) and Grandson Kayden, Godson Sean Cameron along with a host of nephews, nieces, family members and his beloved Pink House family to mourn and cherish fond memories.

Reverend Dr. Valerie Andrews known to those who held her dear as “Valerie” or “Tamar Speaks!,” was born on March 27, 1949 in the area of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn to her late parents Arline Byrd and Gus Andrews. Valerie is the second oldest of seven children and the mother of four with her daughter Tammy Byrd preceding her in death as an infant. She was a loving grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt not only to her blood relatives, but others seeking her out for love, guidance, and encouragement. Rev. Dr. Andrews was a licensed ordained Baptist minister who dedicated her whole life to the healing of the African American community. She recieved her Doctorate of Ministry in Pastoral Care & Counseling and masters degree in Divinity from the United Theological Seminary, and a bachelors of science from Adelphi University. All of which led up to her having the knowledge and courage to create an impactful ministry- Survivors of childhood sexual abuse, as it manifests trauma in African American Women-“Tamar Speaks!”

Valerie began her calling as a social worker where she proudly served her New York City clients who suffered from drug addiction, child abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness. Rev. Dr. Andrews actively ministered tirelessly in the areas of foster care and childhood adoption. She also worked as an adjunct professor at The College of New Rochelle where she taught her students to examine the role of the Black Church and Blacks in the Bible. However, during this journey, she saw a greater need in the area of childhood sexual abuse and the trauma it causes in adult women. Thus, she birthed and became CEO of her ministry “Tamar Speaks!” This ministry was guided by her dissertation research which has its roots in the Bible. “Tamar Speaks!” Is a Holistic Healing Ministry for African American Women who are Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse is published in a research journal. The remainder of her life’s work was committed to helping others heal from the trauma of sexual abuse from their past.

Rev. Dr. Andrews research was highlighted in Essence Magazine in 1998. In addition, she was featured on community radio talk shows at Medgar Evers College and the University of the City of New York, where she discussed the impact of childhood sexual abuse. Furthermore, Rev. Dr. Andrews led a discussion on the pastoral and spiritual needs of survivors of childhood sexual abuses for Connect and was featured on Access Television, 2008. She passionately advocated for the lawmakers change policies around sexual abuse issues and was published in several newspaper articles.

Rev. Dr. Andrews eagerly sponsored workshops, conferences, and participated in panel discussions and storytelling, in both the religious and secular communities.

Her love and passion for the healing of the community led her to receive additional training and certification in psychoanalysis, traumatized children, youth, spirituality, and post-traumatic stress. Over the years, she has received several awards for her work in her ministry.

Valerie loved African Art, music, cooking, and good hearty laugh. She also loved being admired by family, friends and strangers. Valerie stood out in a crowd with her crown adorned with beautiful cowry shells and in purple regalia. Purple was her favorite color because it is a representation of royalty. She wore it proudly as she willfully served others in the community.

She will be missed and remembered by all her friends and especially her family; Aunt Jayne Moody, Uncle Timothy Moody and her siblings; Janet Byrd-Clinton, Carol Byrd, Brenda Ingram, James O. Harris, Jr., Cynthia Harris-Frederick, Sheila A. Harris; Brothers in law; Henry Louis Clinton and Bradford J. Frederick, children; Antionette Byrd, Tonya Byrd, Tammy Byrd (deceased) and Tiaheem Byrd; Grand children; Serina, Alexis, Angelique, and Jerell.

Great Grandson Alexander; Nieces; Crystal, Wakima, Yolnika, Kendrick, Mark (deceased), Jasmine, Christopher, John Paul,Elijah Wallace and a host of cousins, grand nieces and nephews.

Rev. Dr. Valerie Andrews will be remembered fondly by members of her church, ministry, and the community.
