Dierdre Dian Pollard - July 28, 1964 - April 17, 2022

Departed: 04/17/2022 (Roseburg)
Obituary Preview: The world lost a beloved soul on Sunday, April 17, 2022. Dierdre (Dede) Dian Pollard, loving wife and mother of four children, passed away after a heroic fight with breast cancer. She was 57 years old.
Dede was preceded in death by her father and grandfather, Herbert and Harold; and her grandmothers, Zaidee and Agnes. She is survived by her husband Jess; her four children, Christa, Jared, Amanda, and Jessica; her mother Dianne and stepfather Rich; her brother David and stepbrother Richie; and her three grandchildren, Cohen, Aevyn, and Hadley.
Dede was born on July 28, 1964 in Aurora, CO, to Dianne and Herbert (Bud) Dixon. She grew up on the Eastern Slope in Colorado, where she developed a love of ballet and theater. Dede graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1982. She went on to study at BYU Utah, where she met the love of her life. It all started when her husband-to-be gave her roommate a church blessing, and the rest is history. On April 28, 1984, she married Jess Leland Pollard in the Salt Lake Temple. She had many occupations throughout her life, but her most important “job,” she said, was being a mother and grandmother.
Dede had an adventurous spirit; her zeal for life often pushed those around her out of their comfort zones. She loved the coast, where many family outings were spent drawing in the sand and warming up to a perfect bowl of chowder. Dede was artistically inclined and loved to draw and paint. She was encouraged during her later years by her daughter, Amanda, to continue painting, where she quickly rediscovered her passion. Dede looked forward to Sunday service, where she could worship and socialize. She especially loved attending the LDS temple, which was a special place for her as this was where she was married and sealed to her family for all eternity. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family and friends. She was known for her crass sense of humor, contagious laugh, fun-loving attitude, compassion, fortitude, and faith in the Lord. Dede’s funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 351 St. John St in Sutherlin, OR at noon. A luncheon will be held at the same location at 3pm. For those unable to attend, a showing will be provided online via Zoom at 1pm (PT). Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/98330695485
Condolences can be left at Dede’s Tribute Wall (above). Cards and letters can be made through arrangements in the care of Umpqua Valley Funeral Directors, (541) 637-8153.

George Robert Insley - April 25, 1922 - July 16, 2021

Departed: 07/16/2021 (Roseburg)
Obituary Preview: Longtime Roseburg resident, George Robert Insley, died peacefully Friday at the age of 99 years. George was a WWII veteran who piloted B-24s over Europe. This life transforming experience, a passion for assisting others and a love of Jesus combined in his work with Wycliffe Bible Translators as a bush pilot in Peru and Brazil from 1950 to 1985.
George heard the announcement about Pearl Harbor and volunteered for the US Army Air Corps, where he learned to fly at the age of 19. After his training, he flew two tours of duty in the Army 8th Air Corps in Shipdham England, flying 52 missions in B-24 bombers in the 44th Bomb Group. He quickly advanced to captain and became Command Pilot leading the formations.
His third mission was deep into Germany against heavily defended Berlin. The crews of the 8th Air Force were taking heavy losses on each mission and he knew his chances of seeing the end of the war were slim. In the dark of the morning while preparing for this mission, he revisited the faith his mother had taught him and he asked Jesus to become his Savior. After that he was at peace with the constant danger.
As a formation leader, George experimented with subtle tactics to outwit the anti-aircraft guns and fighters. Prior to entering the bomb run where they had to fly perfectly straight, he would have the bombardier spot the flash from the gun batteries ahead and report the altitude of the explosions. He would then make small altitude adjustments to the formation to confuse the gunners. During fighter attacks he would make similar height adjustments within the formation to confuse their split-second timing.
Aware of the high loss rate of airplanes experienced during missions, George always carried a pair of Oregon cork logging boots to improve his chances of escape in the event of surviving being shot down. Despite being a primary target as a lead plane, his aircraft was never hit by fighters and had only minor shrapnel damage from “flak”. When the 29 missions required for the first tour were done, the war was over for George and his crew. They had beaten the odds and survived. They would be returned to the United States to train new crews. George felt he could better use his experience in England, and signed up for a second tour. His entire crew then signed up to return with him, even though the odds of survival were low. Perhaps it was better to be together as a crew with the known dangers along with George and his “lucky” cork boots, than the possible uncertain future should the Air Corps change its mind and start sending experienced crews back into combat with inexperienced pilots.
The Air Corp awarded George with three Distinguished Flying Cross medals and the Air Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters. The entire 44th Bomb Group also received two unit citations. Many years later the French consul general presented him with the French Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur (the Legion of Honor) award for his leadership and efforts in freeing France.  He completed his service in 1949.
George stayed in the Air Corps under the Strategic Air Command until shortly before the Korean War. At that point, he discovered his true calling and volunteered in 1950 to fly for Wycliffe Bible Translators in in Peru and Brazil. He found that he could be of service to God by flying linguists into remote locations where they could learn unwritten languages. He felt that hearing and reading God’s words in your own language spoke much more strongly to you than hearing it in a secondary language learned for trade. He spent the next 40 years flying people and equipment in small planes into unimproved airstrips hacked from the jungle, narrow rocky mountain streams, jungle lakes or rivers. On one occasion he lost a cylinder head on a Norseman float plane as he was crossing over deep swampy jungle. He nursed the plane to the next river where he floated downstream to the next town. On another occasion he calmly coached a fellow pilot into keeping a failing engine running long enough that he could locate him and follow him towards a narrow river where they made an emergency landing.
Always a calm, relaxed and an unflappable pilot, George had precision and a delicate touch in the unexpected situations he often encountered in the jungle and on the rough field airstrips. He always attributed these to the skills needed in landing heavy bombers during WWII.
George never met a stranger without welcoming them. He always had time to help others by doing thoughtful things. He had a big smile and friendship for everyone. This smile was what attracted Jeanne when she first traveled to work in Peru. Eventually they began to date. Her coworkers were puzzled at how often George seemed to be the only pilot who flew to the remote location where she was stationed. They later were married in Peru and moved to Brazil to raise their family.
After leaving Brazil in in 1985, George returned to the family home in Roseburg. He operated a small farm and Insley’s Greenhouse until 2005. George was also active in the 44th Bomb Group Veterans Association. He attended most of the reunions and was always approachable and friendly. He made a point of helping family members of veterans understand what their father or grandfather went through during WW-II.
George Robert Insley was born April 25, 1922 and died July 16, 2021 in the same Roseburg farm house he was born in. He lived 99 years. He is survived by his wife Jeanne “Forrer” Insley to whom he was married for 63 years and three children. Jim (spouse Toni) Insley, Johanna (spouse Joe) Hubbard, and Tina (spouse Gary) Price. His four siblings, Stanley, Lewis, Theodore, and Wyllys have all passed. He has nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
His grandchildren are Seth, Matthew, Katie, and Jonathan Insley; Douglas, Hans (spouse Amber), and Clarissa Hubbard; James and Ted Green. His great-grandchildren are Landyn, Addison, and Emma Hubbard; and Ezra and Ezekiel Findlay.
A graveside service will be performed July 27, 2021, at 11AM at the VA’s new addition of the Roseburg National Cemetery, Roseburg, Oregon.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 9, 2021, at 2PM at Wellspring Bible Fellowship, 2245 NW Kline St, Roseburg, Oregon.

Adrianne Eva Willard - January 08, 1950 - February 05, 2021

Departed: 02/05/2021 (Roseburg)
Obituary Preview: In loving memory of our beloved mother and grandmother, Adrianne Eva Willard, has gone to be with our Lord and her husband Leonard, February 5, 2021.  Mom was born January 8, 1950 to her parents’ Robert and Sylvia Mackey in Turlock, CA.  Mom was known as Adrianne Mackey prior to her marriage to Leonard 25 years ago.  Mom was blessed with three children and six grandchildren.  Mom is survived by daughter, Jennifer Peters, her daughter/son-in-law Shirley and Joseph Valdivia, her sister Roberta Robin, and her brother Mark Mackey; she is also survived by six grandchildren: Aaron Valdivia, Evan Valdivia, Bryce Valdivia, Fallon Peters, Carson Peters, and Mariah Pletcher.
Mom and Leonard lived many years in Bakersfield, CA before moving to Crescent City, CA around 2015.  Mom retired as a hospice nurse in Bakersfield, CA, a job she took a lot of pride in doing.  Anywhere I went with my mother, you could here her say, “…you know, I’m a retired nurse.”  Even as a RN, her and Leonard found plenty of time to spend camping with their grandkids.  My mom was a fighter, even after surviving two open heart surgeries, a complete spinal adjustment surgery (including pins up and down her back), Mom still managed to find time to make her awesome fudge and rocky road at Christmas.  Even though she will be truly missed, I am in comfort knowing she is united with her husband who passed just nine months ago and she is no longer in paid.  Love you Mom.

Departed: 09/28/2020 (Roseburg)
Obituary Preview: Charles Leslie Vigue, "Grandpa Chuck", 81, passed away very peacefully on September 28, 2020.  He was born August 11, 1939 in Lenore, Idaho to Frank and Naomi (née Mintz) Vigue, but was raised mostly near Hunter's Creek on the Southern Oregon Coast.
He was an amazing individual who rose above his beginnings, supporting himself from the age of 12 on, with natural ability and inherent wisdom that transcended any classical education.  He held many diverse jobs in his long life, many of them in the logging industry.
On June 27, 1964, he married the love of his life, Colleen (née Breedlove), and their ongoing love for each other has shone through and brightened every aspect of their lives, as well as the lives of the children and grandchildren they had together. Although he was a very humble person, Chuck was very proud of his beautiful wife, children, and grandchildren.
Chuck had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed working outdoors, playing with his dog, and watching old westerns, musicals, and Shakespeare, as well as studying the Bible, of which he had vast knowledge.  For many years, he enjoyed the privilege and blessing of serving as an elder in the Garden Valley Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.  He enjoyed sharing his deep faith, and was never happier than when seeing others, and especially his family members, express a love and appeciation for spiritual things as well.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Vigue; his mother, Naomi Hanson; brothers, Glen Vigue, Dave Vigue, and Gordon Vigue; sisters,  Faye Smith, Lee Barg, Margie Browning, and Nancy Schaeffer.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Colleen Vigue; his children, Charlie Vigue and his wife Regine, Frank Vigue and his wife Tammi, Beverly Rodriguez and her husband Peter, and Ronald Vigue; his grandchildren, Ylektra Rodriguez, Persephanie Rodriguez, Gladys Vigue, and Larry Vigue; and his sister, Frances Trahan; as well as too many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends to name.
Chuck was truly the kindest and gentlest of men, and the best husband, father, grandpa, friend, and spiritual shepherd imaginable.  As Chuck did, we look forward to the day when God's Kingdom will "wipe out every tear from our eyes" (Rev. 21:3,4) and we will see our loved ones again (John 5:28,29).
Due to the current gathering restrictions, a memorial service and slideshow presentation are being planned utilizing the Zoom platform.  Any friends or family members who are not members of his congregation may contact one of Chuck's family members for an invite.  Please join us in honoring his life -- he was so loved.

Martha’s favorite place, that always gave her peace and the air that she craved, was on the coast at Port Orford. She spent as much time there as she could but especially on her birthdays with her husband just enjoying the sound of the waves and breathing the air. Edna Mary Yocom - July 07, 1923 - September 30, 2019

Departed: 09/30/2019 (Roseburg)
Obituary Preview: Edna Mary Yocom, wife of the late Taylor B. Yocom of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 30th at Thanksgiving House Residential Care Facility in St Helens, Oregon surrounded by family. Edna was born July 7, 1923, in Wausau, Wisconsin to Jake and Minnie Naef. She joined the Naef family as number 9 of the eventual 12 children. She spent her childhood growing, playing, and learning about life on the farm, with her immediate family and 10 cousins on the adjoining 80 acre farm. She often joked that each family could field their own baseball team (a favorite pastime for all after the chores were done), and they spent many happy hours working the farm together. After her childhood and school years she moved to Neenah, Wisconsin, and spent her young adult life working for Kimberly Clark Corporation. A while later, she and her sister Aideline made the decision to move across the country to join their siblings Ida Warnkee, Ethel Hoover, and Viola Naef in Oregon. Edna left Wisconsin carrying a single small suitcase that encased her entire worldly belongings. Upon arrival in Portland, she went to work in manufacturing for Jantzen Woolen Mills. After some time in Portland, she met her future husband Taylor Yocom. They were later married at her sister Ida’s home. Edna spent her married life as an excellent homemaker. She loved to cook for family and friends, and was always worried that her guests didn’t get enough to eat. She always served meals on china plates decorated with flowers and berries, which reflected her other passion – gardening. Edna was a talented gardener, and every summer had a garden bursting with ripe vegetables and flowers. The front yard boasted perfectly manicured flowerbeds filled with primroses, and a lawn that perpetually looked as though a landscaping team had just left. It was all the result of her and Taylor’s hard work and attention – even into her late eighties, she mowed the lawn herself. Later in life she started taking painting lessons and became a privately accomplished oil painter. Although she never believed she had any talent, her family’s homes are filled with her artwork, which ranged from oceanscapes to woodland critters. Although Edna was an avid gardener and talented cook, her deepest love was her faith. Edna’s lifelong faith started when she was 14, when she committed her life to following the teachings of Jesus Christ. She had the privilege of growing up in a godly home after her parents, Jake and Minnie, found the teachings of Jesus and decided to follow the Gospel. Through lifelong trials and hardship, Edna’s faith never wavered. She prayed for friends and family daily, quietly, at her bedside, never complaining of her own hardships. Edna’s first marital home was a wall tent in the mountains of Oregon. In 1964 she endured the tragic loss of her two young sons, and was later preceded in death by many of her siblings. However, even in hardship, Taylor and Edna served as faithful, loving members of their community, filling a great need in their hometown. She also knew a few great joys in life. Her smile when she recently heard of her next great grandchild to be, said it all. Edna was preceded in death by her husband Taylor (2009), two sons; Richard and Robert (1964), and 10 siblings: Ida Warnkee, Gertrude Hopland-Wiskow, Ethel Hoover, Adolf Naef, Lillian Kersten, George Naef, Viola Naef, Reuben Naef, Aideline Criswell, and Conrad Naef. Edna is survived by her two daughters; Beverly and her husband Mel Holcomb and Barbara and her husband Bob Williams, fiv granddaughters; Debra and her husband Lee Buchanan, Stacy and her husband David Wood, Michel and her husband Daniel Thornsteinson, Jessica and her husband Drew Crosby and Kylie and her husband Jordan Coker; and five great-grandchildren; Paige Buchanan, Meghan Buchanan, Taylor Wood, Amanda Wood, Connor Wood, and one brother; Norman Naef and his wife Audrey.
