James Daniel Bottcher - July 17, 1948 - April 16, 2022

Obituary Preview: James Daniel Bottcher, 73, passed away at his home in Altoona, FL, surrounded by his loving family, on April 16, 2022. He fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.Jim was born on July 17, 1948, to Reme and Dorothy Bottcher in Middletown, N.Y. His family moved to Boynton Beach, FL, when he was 13. He graduated from Seacrest High School in 1967 and attended Palm Beach Community College and Florida Atlantic University, where he received his Master of Education degree. It was also in Boynton where Jim met the love of his life, Joyce (Jody), and they were married in 1968 and started a family soon after. The couple moved their young family to Altoona in 1979 and made it their home for the past 43 years.Jim spent 32 years as a well-loved and respected elementary school teacher, starting his career at St. Vincent Ferrer School in Delray Beach, FL, before transitioning to the public school system. After moving to Lake County, Jim enjoyed a long teaching career at Altoona Elementary School and Spring Creek Elementary School in Paisley, FL. He also tutored at night at the Lake County Boys’ Ranch. In addition to teaching, Jim was instrumental in managing the Safety Patrol program and also the 4-H Club at both Altoona Elementary and Spring Creek Elementary. From pigs to cows, Jim was the go-to man.After retiring from teaching, Jim pursued his love of gardening and earned his Master Gardener certification. He had a green thumb like no other. He was a member of the Umatilla Garden Club and spent many hours volunteering at Altoona School. He enjoyed teaching the second-grade students all about gardening and helped them to start their own garden. Jim was known by many names – Mr. Bottcher, Big Jim, JB, Dad and Papa. And all who knew him will remember him as a big guy with an even bigger heart and gentle soul. He’ll also be remembered for his sense of humor, generosity and skillful dance moves. Jim is survived by his wife, Jody; daughter Renie and son-in-law Mark; daughter Amy; daughter Wendy and son-in-law Brandon; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Lauren, Collin, Gavin and Megan; brother Bill; brother Mike and sister-in-law Karen; brother Tom and sister-in-law Kathy; and several nieces and nephews. Jim will be especially missed by Stormy, his beloved dog who enjoyed their walks, long golf cart rides, and naps with his “dad”. Although it’s sad to say goodbye, there’s peace in knowing how many lives Jim has touched. Like his favorite song says, Jim always felt he should have been a cowboy. His family is comforted knowing he’s in Heaven riding until his heart’s content.A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 2:00 at Beyers Funeral Home, 279 South Central Avenue, Umatilla, FL. A celebration of life service will follow at the Bottcher residence.

Obituary Preview: Ralph Richmond “Rich” Bacon (84) of Altoona, FL passed away on March 30, 2022. He was born March 3, 1938 in Newton, Massachusetts to Robert Francis and Jean Richmond (Taber) Bacon. Rich is survived by his dear wife of 16 years, Diana Gail (Lupian); his children Robert Bacon and Debra Dowling (Pat). He was also blessed by his grandchildren Mary Bordenaro, Michael Bordenaro, Shannon Baker, Trey Bacon and Richard Bacon. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Patricia (Fowler) 1999.Rich was a fervent patriot serving the United States in the Army Green Berets for 9 years. He served the country in Vietnam also serving as a medic and was a Master Jumper paratrooper. After the service he worked as an insurance agent for Merrill Lynch and also worked for Watkins Trucking. Rich honored his comrade veterans in his retirement as an active member of the honor guard of the American Legion of Lady Lake, FL., the American Legion of Umatilla, FL., and the 82nd Airborne, North Central Florida Chapter. He loved reading and also found great enjoyment in gardening. Obituary Preview: William A. Kicklighter,86, of Umatilla FL passed peacefully at home Monday, March 21, 2022. He is survived by his beloved bride of almost 65 years Elizabeth “Betty” Kicklighter; his daughters: Donna K. Nelson of Eustis, Diane K. Hammon (Rusty) of Wesley Chapel who were the pride of his eye; his loving brothers: Ralph Kicklighter (Myra) of Astor and Pat Kicklighter (Louise) of Umatilla and his three treasured grandchildren: Eric Nelson, Galina Nelson and William Asa Hammon.William was born in Oceanway Jacksonville, FL May 17, 1935 and at the age of 7 moved to Umatilla where he was a lifelong resident. He graduated with the Class of 1953 from Umatilla High School. Having lost his father early in his life, William held a variety of jobs during high-school to help support his mother and siblings which honed his high work-ethic.William served in the U.S. Army, 1st Battle Group, 9th Calvary, which included a year of service in South Korea. Upon his return to Umatilla, he devoted over 40 years, in a variety of progressive positions to Umatilla State Bank which later became United Southern Bank. He started his career as a Bank Teller in 1954 and through hard work and diligence his career culminated as the President and CEO during which he led the bank through significant growth and expansion. A revered leader by the USB family, William would be the first to say any success he achieved professionally was not due to him, but instead the incredible group of employees at USB. During his extensive banking career, he served in leadership positions in various organizations relating to the banking industry including: Independent Bankers of Florida; American Institute of Banking, of which he served as President of Lake-Sumter Chapter of A.I.B; Florida Bankers Association – serving on multiple FBA committees; and was presented a distinguished service award from the Florida Bankers Insurance Trust for eleven years of service and four years as chairman. William attended Stetson University, with interest in a music degree, and was a graduate of LSU School of Banking of the South. Strong community involvement was an important personal principle to William. He was a member and President of the Umatilla Jaycees, President of the City Council of Umatilla, Director of Pine Meadows Golf and Country Club, Board member of the Electron Machine Corporation, member of the Umatilla Re-development Committee, board member of Lake County United Way, and board member of Lake County Hospice and American Heart Association of Lake County. In 1985, he was selected as Mr. Umatilla by Umatilla Chamber of Commerce and he was the recipient of the Lake Sentinel Community Service Award in 1994. William professed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and he lived his life with a grace-filled servant’s heart. He was deeply involved in the First Baptist Church of Umatilla for over 65 years serving as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and trustee, and on numerous committees pertaining to growth and finances of the church. He willingly and graciously served in any capacity which his gifts and talents could be used for the benefit of God’s Kingdom. William had a gifted tenor voice and sang in the church choir for most of his life, a few weddings and funerals. Most enjoyable and memorable were quartets with his brothers and his infamous singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ every year to family members.After retirement in 1997, William enjoyed doing the things he loved the most – being with his bride, working in the yard and creating a “slice of heaven on earth”, creating many wood working projects, spending time with family, and traveling.William was preceded in death by his father and mother, Lloyd and Mattie Webb Kicklighter; siblings J.L. Kicklighter, Herman Kicklighter, and Zedna K. Weaver. William is buried at Umatilla Annex Cemetery in Umatilla, Florida. A celebration of life will be held on April 9th at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Umatilla with Pastor Brooks Braswell officiating.

He was a skilled tennis and golf player, a capable oil paint artist and a creative story writer. He loved being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. He loved God and he walked in the Christian faith. He was one of the most sensitive, loving men that ever lived and will be sorely missed. She was born in Chicago, IL on January 10, 1927 and was married for 70 years to George Gruber who passed in 2017.Shirley and George moved to Lakeview Terrace in Altoona in 1994 from Chicago by way of Fort Myers. They enjoyed life together and George became her eyes as her vision decreased and walking became more difficult. Shirley often commented that George was still watching over her and we blamed him when a watch or clock alarm would go off in the middle of the night. She was loved for her spirit, her determination and affinity for chocolate.Shirley was predeceased by her husband, George Gruber. She is loved and missed by many friends.

Obituary Preview: Nicole M. Watson-Fassbinder, 38, of Belleview, FL died unexpectedly, on March 16th, from injuries sustained in an auto accident while traveling home with her husband Neil. This accident also claimed the life of their newborn baby girl, Niki Marie, who was born in Ocala, Fl, and passed days later, The Women and Children hospital in Orlando, Fl. Their loss was completely unexpected and the family is shocked and deeply saddened.Nicole was born on April 19th 1983 to Charlotte Mauldin and Glenn Watson in Leesburg, Fl. Nicole graduated from Umatilla High School and was passionate about caring for others. Before stepping away from work, to be a full-time mother, she worked at You and Your Health Family Care in Tavares, Fl as a Medical Assistant. Anyone who knew Nicole, knew that she was special. She was always trying to help others in any way she could. She truly, on a level most will never experience, cared for others. When she wasn’t focusing on everyone else, she loved to spend time at the beach with her family and friends. Nicole’s family and friends will miss her more than words can say.Nicole was survived by her husband Neil, her two beautiful children Cadence and Kamden, her mother Charlotte, and brother Wesley, as well as many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who will miss her. He was a life member with the Columbia Company Fire Police where he served as President for 3 years and a life member of the PA Fire Police where he served as chaplain, Vice President and 2 years as president.He was a member of the Kitchen UM Church.He spent many years farming in Millville, driving school buses for many districts, before retiring from Tom Bowman Trucking.He enjoyed traveling, has been in 49 of the 50 states. She was preceded in death by her parents. Vicki worked for Home Depot for a time. Her extreme love was for animals. Her dogs and her horses were her children. She love raising and training horses. She continued that passion with a skill in sketch artistry of the horses along with photography of them and the dogs, as well as flowers (another of her hobbies). Vicki was truly one of the sweetest, good-hearted women that will ever live. She has left many memories and will be sorely missed. She started at the entry level and moved to Head Teller and other positions within the bank. She attended the Baptist Church. She loved her pets, but one of her favorite joys was spending time with Braelyn, her granddaughter. She has left many memories and will be sorely missed. There will be a graveside service for Tammy at the Glendale Cemetery on Monday, March 7th at 10:00 AM. He was preceded in death by his parents. Larry was a truck driver for many years. Afterwards he busied himself in many activities. He enjoyed football and particularly enjoyed cheering on the Gators. He and Rece worked together combining furniture to reclaim it into something else creative and useful. He was an amazing caregiver for the family. He has left many memories and will be sorely missed.

She was a loving and hardworking woman. Diane worked until she retired at 63. She continued to work part time for several years until she was unable to do so. She loved being surrounded by her family and friends. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Jessie Raymond Taylor in 1999. She is survived by daughters Lori Zinn (Chuck) and Julie McCray(Robert) of Leesburg, Amy Taylor (Chris) of Umatilla and son Shawn Taylor (Vicky) of Lady Lake. She is also survived by all of her siblings, brothers Gene Foose, Jim Foose and Steve Foose and sister Vicky Foose , all of Missouri. Her grandchildren include Nicki, Jesse, Taylor, Austin,Samantha, Rochelle, Jamey, Shawni and Justin. She was a great grandmother to 10 children as well. He was also blessed with grandchildren Robert Duszynski, Chelsea Duzynski, Mackenzie Strickland, Morgan Tyler and Justin Garcia as well as great grandchildren Nevaeh, Maddox, RJ and Charlie. He is also survived by his sister Jane Duff along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Laverne Treadway and his brother Robert Webb and his parents. Harold was a dispatcher for the Florida Highway Patrol for 32 years. As a son of a veteran, he regularly participated with AMVETS and the VFW. He also attended the First Baptist Church of Umatilla. Harold loved fishing. But his great passion was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was “one of the most kind, gentle man that God ever put on the earth.”

Her family relocated to Naugatuck, Connecticut, in 1932 where she made her home until moving to Dunedin, Florida, in 1989 and then to Lady Lake, Florida, in 1997.Shirley was the wife of the late William G. Leuchars. Shirley and Bill were married on April 24, 1948 in Naugatuck, Connecticut. They had two children, Keith and Kim. Shirley is survived by her son Keith Leuchars and daughter-in-law Gail, of Lynn, Massachusetts; and daughter Kim Carse and son-in-law James of Cary, North Carolina. She had two grandchildren: granddaughter Lauren Reid and her husband Chase, and their daughters Sadie and Finley; and grandson Kyle Carse and his wife Leslie, and their daughter Elsie. Throughout the years Shirley worked as secretary to the former Naugatuck Mayor Joseph Raykiewicz; dental assistant for Dr. Hans H. Griesbach; and medical assistant and office manager for Dr. William E. Hill, Jr.Shirley was highly active in St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Naugatuck serving as choir mother, Sunday school teacher, and vice president of the Thursday Nighter's Women's Group.As she requested, Shirley will be cremated, and services will be private.

Willetta and Ron lived all over the country, before moving to Winter Park from California in 1969. Later, she graduated from Orange Memorial Hospital in Orlando as a registered nurse. After retirement, they enjoyed their Umatilla home for 22 years, and were active members of the Umatilla Kiwanis and Garden Club. Ron and Willetta did extensive traveling, including a round the world cruise in 2016. Willetta loved gardening, animals, reading and doing crossword puzzles. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother, generous, happy and kind.
Willetta will be buried with a graveside service at the Umatilla Annex Cemetery, Umatilla, FL on Sunday, January 2, 2022 at 1:00pm.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents Winson Mao Sparks I and Lois Merle Huey Sparks; and his brothers, Danny and William Sparks. Butch was a legendary baker for Publix Supermarkets for 46 years. His leadership and influence earned him the title of Superman, first by his wife and then filtering to his fellow workers. He loved caring for animals, especially chickens. Butch loved breeding them to find colors and qualities outside of the standard breeds. He also enjoyed gardening and tinkering around the farm. He was a good-hearted man, caring for others over himself and at his own expense. He has left many amazing memories and will be sorely missed
A funeral service is scheduled to remember Butch at the Beyers Funeral Home 279 S. Central Ave. in Umatilla, FL. A time of visitation will be on Tuesday, December 14 from 6:00- 8:00 PM. Florence would share, “He was the best break this old heart ever had…the best for always and forever.” A special thanks to the staff at Compassionate Care Hospice for making the last days of his life so much better, so he could stay in his home with all who loved him the most. Later he joined the Umatilla First Baptist Church. Throughout his life he taught Sunday School and worked with young people. Paul was also active in the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife Eleanor Rosselle; his four sons, Bob, Bill, Jim and Dan Rosselle and their spouses; His wife’s children, Mark Crutchfield, Dan Crutchfield and his spouse and Carol Sifflinger. He had a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A service will be held on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 1:00 PM at the Umatilla First Baptist Church in Umatilla, FL.

She has 17 great grandchildren. Trinity Platten, Kiara Cromer, Jaden and Jania Patel, Destiny and Lara Bullard, Michael “Bubba” Mann, Jeremy Holley-deceased. And last by not least she has 2 great great grandchildren, Taylor Kiser and Everleigh Wolan.
