His family lived in the country and he attended a one-room school until the 7th grade, when they moved to town in Hillsboro, Kansas. In high school he lettered in football and baseball. After his senior baseball season, he was invited to run track and volunteered for the mile. With no time to train he placed first at both the league and region meets qualifying for the state meet where he finished in the top 10.
He continued his education at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. College was interrupted by the Korean Conflict. As a pacifist, rather than entering the military he performed alternative service in Paraguay, where he provided agricultural education. After two years in Paraguay, he took the scenic route home travelling through Europe for two months. Once back in the States, he continued his education at Goshen College in Indiana. After one year at Goshen, he returned to Bethel, meeting his future wife, Elaine, and completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts.
One week after graduation Lee and Elaine were married in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. Lee began his career in Wilson, Kansas, teaching grades 7 - 12. Two years later they moved to Shawnee Mission, Kansas, where he taught at the Junior High level. During the Shawnee Mission years three children (Vicki, Brian, and Ken) were born and he completed his Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education.
The young family then moved to West Virginia where Lee established the Industrial Arts Department at Fairmont State College. After 2 years the family moved to Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Lee concluded his thirty-year teaching career in the Robbinsdale School District.
Lee had many interests and hobbies. He was an avid fisherman and went on many trips to Oklahoma to fish with his brother Tony. There were also numerous family trips to Northern Minnesota. For years he had an extensive vegetable garden. He also enjoyed landscaping, installing an award-winning flower garden complete with water feature. Lee was very creative and skilled at designing and building projects in his woodworking shop. Travel was an important activity beginning with extensive family camping trips across the U.S. and Canada. In retirement Lee and Elaine enjoyed bus tours, international travel, and nine mission trips. He appreciated fun and fellowship when playing games with family and friends. A day was not complete unless it included a dish of ice cream.
After retiring, Lee and Elaine moved to Gramercy Senior Housing in Eagan and became involved in many aspects of community life. He continued to stay involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, supporting them in all their activities. We will all miss him, but are glad that he is no longer in pain and is now with family and friends who have gone before him.

Obituary Preview: Petroski, Dorothy S. of Eagan, died on March 23, 2024, at the age of 95. She is survived by her loving children, Mary Jean Higgins (Jim), Janet Hansen (Bill) and Alan Petroski (Jill Gray); grandchildren Jeffrey (Emily) and John (Libby Johnson) Higgins; Maureen, Kevin, Ryan and Colin Hansen; and great-grandchildren Calvin, Cameron, James and Pierce Higgins. Preceded in death by husband of 70 years, Walt. Dorothy, the oldest of four, was born on a farm near Ellendale, Minnesota, and lost her mother at the age of 10. Perhaps she became such a strong woman because of the hardships in her early life. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, and once skipped a grade because she was the only one in the grade. After graduating from New Richland High School, she moved to Minneapolis and attended secretarial college. Dorothy met Walt at a dance at a Catholic church, and they were married in 1950. Soon after, Dorothy and Walt dealt with Dorothy’s thyroid cancer, the first of three cancer bouts. They lived first in south Minneapolis, and many years in Mendota Heights, where Dorothy enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, playing bridge, the dance club, and volunteering at the Church of St. Peter in Mendota, where she was an active member. Dorothy made sure the weeds did not win in the many gardens at St. Peter’s! She was a loving and supportive wife, mother and grandmother, always very interested in family members’ lives. Dorothy and Walt moved to Gramercy Park Eagan and embraced their new community. She loved living there and was very active right up until the end. Dorothy cared for Walt through his decline during COVID. She said no one could take better care of him than she could, and she was right. There were many health crises of her own after Walt’s death, but her strong will to live enabled her to enjoy life much longer than expected. Her interest in others, humor, and hard work ethic stand out. After God made Dorothy, He threw away the mold. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with visitation at 10:00 am on Friday, April 5, 2024, at the Church of St. Peter in Mendota. Livestream of the Mass can be found at stpetersmendota.org. I know you have doubts, but I see it right now I promise it’s real, keep praying. I’ll be waiting, take your time and go write a story that you can’t wait to tell me. On the other side.” - Lauren Alaina
Special thanks to all staff at the Woodwinds Cancer Center, especially to Dr. Thaw who never gave up on her.
At Diane’s request, no public service will be held. In lieu of a funeral service and to honor Diane’s fight, we ask all those willing to make a donation to Metavivor in her name to fund research and advancements in treatment of MBC.
