Obituary Preview: Paula K. Bailey, age 87, of Gladstone, Illinois passed away at 5:03 PM on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at Great River Hospice House in Burlington, Iowa. She was born on June 19, 1921 in Gladstone, Illinois, the daughter of Paul Melvin and Dorothy Alice (Kessinger) Rhoades. She attended school in the Gladstone Community and graduated from Gladstone High School. On October 6, 1951, Paula married Raymond L. "Pete" Bailey and he preceded her in death on May 28, 2016. Paula was employed as a cook at Union High School, at I.R.C. Electronics, Midwest Biscuit, and Antennacraft in West Burlington, Iowa, from which she retired in 1996. After retirement, she enjoyed serving meals to seniors with the Henderson County Health Department. Paula enjoyed mushrooming, reading, visiting, and helping her friends around Gladstone. Most of all, Paula loved her family and her grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Gladstone where she taught Sunday School for years. Paula is survived by one daughter, Luann Walker of Gladstone, Illinois, three sons; Bob (Barb) Bailey of Gladstone, Illinois, Mike (Debra) Bailey of Oquawka, Illinois, and Jay (Sherry) Bailey, also of Oquawka, thirteen grandchildren, and twenty-five great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Pauline Russell of West Burlington, Iowa and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband "Pete", one sister, Sherry Reed, and one son, Jerry Bailey.

Patty was employed for 15 years at Hy-Vee in Burlington, Iowa in the delicatessen. She attended Faith Bible Church in Oquawka, Illinois. Patty is survived by her husband Bill of Oquawka, Illinois, two daughters, Crystal (Bill) Bercaw of Springfield, Illinois, and Cindy (John) Erdman of Willow City, North Dakota, two sons, Jim (Dianna) Blakley of Anchorage, Alaska and Darren (Leann) Blakley in rural Gladstone, Illinois, and five grandchildren. Also surviving are four sisters, Shirley (Dave) Herbert of St. Joseph, Missouri; Carole Helle of Seattle, Washington; Sheri (Ron) Sisk of Gravois Mills, Missouri; and Margaret (Don) Miller of McFall, Missouri, one brother, Ted (Deb) Turner of Springdale, Arkansas. She worked at Hamilton Grocery in Oquawka, LaMont Limited in Burlington, and also at Lowe's in Burlington. Brenda was a fan of Elvis Presley, and she loved to play games and posting on Facebook. She very much loved her dogs and "Goldie". Brenda is survived by two sisters; Patricia "Pat" (Gary) Andrews of Atkinson, Illinois and Connie (John) Spiker of Oquawka, Illinois, two brothers; Gerald (Gayle) Whitmore of Galesburg, Illinois and Michael Whitmore of New London, Iowa. There are eight nieces and nephews, six great nieces and nephews, and one great-great nephew also surviving. She is preceded in death by her parents.

She was born on December 25, 1943 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Junior Cornell and Helen Maxine (Craig) Coover. She attended Oquawka Grade School, G&O High School, and graduated from Union High School. On August 10, 1963, Carole married Ray W. "Fuzz" McIntire in Upland, California and he preceded her in death on May 24, 2018. For a time, she worked at a retirement home in Longbeach, California. After moving back in the area, Carole worked for many years as a Secretary for the Oquawka School District and the West Central School District. She lastly worked at the Phillips 66 Station in Oquawka, Illinois. Carole enjoyed reading, crocheting, cats and birds, and soap operas. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing volleyball and dancing with her husband Ray. Mostly, Carole loved spending time with her grandchildren. Carole is survived by two sons; Ray Jr. (Amy) McIntire of Oquawka, IL and Craig (Tammy) McIntire of Oak Grove, MO, one sister; Victoria Oaks of New London, IA, two brothers, Dennis Coover and David Coover, both of Oquawka, IL, grandchildren; Hannah, Megan, Matt, Travis, and Tori (Jeff), and three great-grandchildren Vernon, Ivan and Jameson. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ray, and one son, Joseph McIntire.

Roy was born on April 25, 1941 in Rogersville, Tennessee, the son of Alex LeRoy and Beuna Leona (Dean) Howe. Roy attended Ketron school in Kingsport, Tennessee. On June 22, 1991, he married JoAnn McAllister in Burlington, Iowa and she survives. Roy began work at the Battery Works and later at National Licorice Company, both in the Quad Cities. After that, he was employed by J I Case of the Quad Cities in the hydraulic cylinder department for twenty-five years, the last five working at the plant in Burlington, Iowa. Roy worked a year at GE in Burlington, IA and then worked another nine years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa, from which he retired. Roy was a faithful member of the Rozetta Baptist Church. Roy loved to go fishing and loved to play his guitar, and was most attached to his dog "Heidi". He is survived by his wife, JoAnn C. Howe of Oquawka, IL; step sons, Terry Royer (Debbie) Cedarburg, Wisconsin, Robert A. "Bob" Royer (Patty Hohmbraker) of Salem, IA. and his step daughter, Brenda Mennen (Keven Mehaffy) of Burlington, IA. There are two daughters, Polly Anna Bender (Kenneth) of DeWitt, IA, and Marcella DeWulf (Mike) Carman, IL as well as Roy's half sister, Jean Leachman of Fairmont, GA and half brother, Kyle Dyer (Martha) of White Pine, TN. He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and a great grandchild. He is preceded in his death by his parents and one half sister, Ann.

On December 23, 1957, she married Raymond "Clyde" Seitz in Keithsburg, Illinois and he preceded her in death on July 14, 2015. Gladys previously was married to Otice Hawn and he preceded her in 1956. Gladys began work at Cannon Bronze in Keithsburg. She later worked at Formfit in Monmouth, Illinois, I.A.A.P. in Middletown, Iowa, and Chittenden and Easton in Burlington, Iowa. Lasltly, she worked at the Village Hub, Crazy Mary's, and the Twist and Shout in Oquawka, Illinois. For a time, Gladys offered Reflexology. She enjoyed her garden, Martin Birds and Birdhouses, Reading, Sewing, and was a longtime member of the Oquawka Senior Citizens Center. Most of all, Gladys loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed their events. Gladys is survived by two daughters, Louann (Bryan) Rice of Galesburg, Illinois and Christie (Jake) Stewart of Oquawka, Illinois, two sisters, Joann (Chuck) Welch of Monmouth, Illinois and Lena May (Jerry) Saunders of Des Moines, Iowa, two brothers, Louis (Maxine) Freeman of Keithsburg, Illinois and Jerry Freeman of Galesburg, Illinois, grandchildren; Amber Taeger, Justin Stewart, Matthew Rice, and Shannon Rice, and great-grandchildren; Jack Taeger, Jadyn Taeger, James Rice, Alliyah Rice, and two yet to be born. Also surviving Gladys are her nephew Melvin Seitz and many other nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husbands.

Jinx was born on June 3, 1944 in Gladstone, Illinois and is the son of Lloyd Dale and Almeda Matilda Dobson Huss. He was raised in Gladstone, Illinois where he attended local schools. Lloyd was first married to Marilyn Warren, and later to Ruth Bigger, and lastly married Betty Cheely. Jinx first worked in the melon field for Addie Step and later was employed in Burlington for Witte's Paint Factory. He later worked at Selby's Turkey Factory and then as an electrician maintenance man at Kline Manufacturing in Burlington, Iowa. Lloyd was lastly employed at Admiral Corporation in Galesburg, Illinois until his retirement. Jinx loved country music and played the drums for the Gay and Country Boys Band, locally for a number of years. He is survived by two daughters, Dottie Huss and Carol Huss, both of Burlington, Iowa and two sons, Lloyd D. Huss III of Carman, IL and Cecil H. Huss of Burlington, Iowa. There are nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren surviving. Two sisters survive, Judy Krabby (Fred) of Kansas City, MO. and Lela Worley (Larry) of Carman, IL., two brothers, Raymond Huss (Carol) and Richard Huss (Mary), both of Dallas City, IL. He is preceded in his death by his parents, one brother, his step mother, and one son.

Peg was born on April 29, 1935 in Chanute, Kansas and is the daughter of M. Clem and Edna Alice Endsley Keller. She was raised in Chanute until the family moved to California during World War II where she was until the eighth grade. In 1946 the family moved to Illinois and she graduated from Monmouth High School with the class of 1953. During her senior year, Peg stayed in Monmouth and lived with the Del Koke Family. Peggy married John F. Eckley on June 6, 1954 in Allen County in Kansas. Peg was employed, acting as a secretary for her husband, John, for seventeen years while he worked for Science Research Associates. She is a loving mother and homemaker to her husband and children and is an avid Cubs baseball fan. She very much enjoyed going out on the river. She is survived by her husband, John of Oquawka, Illinois and four sons, John D Eckley (Toni) of Bloomington, IL; George K. Eckley (Tina) of Cordova Alaska; Stephen T. Eckley (Debbie) of Oquawka, IL; and Robert R. Eckley (Deb) of Cordova, Alaska; and one daughter, Patricia A. Cook (Terry) of Monmouth, Illinois. There are nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in her death by her parents and one brother Tommy Keller.

She retired from there after 35 years with the company. Helen was a member of the Faith Bible Church in Oquawka where she assisted with the AWANA program, the Children's Nursery, and the E-Mail prayer chain. She very much enjoyed her Shih Tzu dogs. Helen is survived by her husband, Wayne of Oquawka, Illinois, one daughter, Tina Wesley of Oquawka, Illinois, one step-daughter, Debra Chenoweth of Burlington, Iowa, three sons, Mike (Barbara) Woodyard of Holly Springs, Mississippi, Terry (Lisa) Woodyard of Oakville, Iowa, and Sean (David) Woodyard of Chicago, Illinois. There are many grandchildren and great-grandchildren surviving. Also surviving are three sisters, Carman (Larry) Hartman of Oquawka, Illinois, Carolyn Norder, Texas, and Delene Wilson of Oquawka, Illinois, and one brother, Paul (Donna) Loper of Galesburg, Illinois. Obituary Preview: Junior Willie Bielser, age 82, of Gladstone, Illinois; passed away at 2:57 pm on Monday, December 31, 2018 at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, Iowa. Junior was born on February 20, 1936 in Gladstone, Illinois and is the son of Willie E and Vivian M. Boughton Bielser. He was raised in Gladstone and attended local schools, then graduated from G & O High School. After his schooling, Willie honorably served his country joining the United States Army and was stationed in Ft. Leonard Wood and later was sent to Iceland as a corporal. After his service Junior married Evelyn M. Connolly on June 14, 1957 in Gladstone, Illinois. Willie has been an Iron Worker and been employed by Local Union 577 in Burlington, Iowa. He has been involved with the construction of bridges on I-80, 280, the Centennial Bridge in Davenport, IA, the Keokuk and Burlington Bridges and has been an iron worker for some fifty years. He is an avid Chicago White Sox Fan and Chicago Bears Fan. Starting in 1948 Junior played minor league baseball for the Gladstone Clippers and was asked to try out for the Detroit Tigers, but refused. He played and coached Men's Fast pitch Softball for many years, coached boys baseball-peewee, little league, pony league teams for many years and winning many Championships. Junior was adamant about the rules of baseball and the safety of his players. He also enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, coon hunting, and most of all watching his children and grandchildren play all sports. Willie was honored by the Henderson County Senior Center for his work as a driver; logging over 10,000 miles in all types of weather. He volunteers with the attitude "let me know what I can do and when I can do it." He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Gladstone, IL; and daughter, Debra (Paul) Anderson of Stronghurst, Illinois, three sons, Darrel (Tracey) Bielser of Gladstone, IL; Terry (DeDe) Bielser of Stronghurst, IL; and Stephen (Margaret) Bielser of Oquawka, IL. There are eleven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren surviving. Junior's sisters survive, Dixie (Rusty) Lox of Oquawka, IL and Jane (Steve) Mueske of Pine Island, Minnesota and two brothers, Danny (Donna) Bielser of Biggsville, IL; and John (Nancy) Bielser of Mountain Home, AR. A number of other relatives also are surviving. Junior is preceded in his death by his parents, one sister, and one brother.

Obituary Preview: Patrick J. "Pat" Peck, age 71, of Oquawka, Illinois passed away at 4:13 am at Heartland Health Care Center in Galesburg on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Pat was born on December 25, 1946 in Galesburg, Illinois and is the son of Maurice LaVerne and Joan Elizabeth Kohler Peck. He attended the Galesburg schools and the Galesburg High School during which time he was employed by the Continental Clothier in Galesburg. He graduated from Galesburg High School in 1965. Patrick married Barbara Jean Huss on July 31, 1993 in Oquawka, Illinois and she is surviving. Pat first worked at Farmall in the Quad Cities for a number of years and later was in Quality Assurance at Gale Products in Galesburg. Pat then worked for thirty years in Quality Control at Maytag corporation from which he retired after they closed. Pat enjoyed going to breakfast club in Galesburg, and was a true people person. After retirement, Pat worked another four years at Reynolds Manufacturing in Milan, Illinois. Pat owned several show cars and enjoyed very much going to car shows and showing his three cars. He often went to the car shows in Oquawka and Monmouth, and liked to go to the Bagnell Dam Car Show in the Ozarks. More recently he loved to fish and go on the river fishing with his friends. Pat is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Peck of Oquawka, Illinois and his mother, Joan Peck of Galesburg, Illinois. He has two sons, Michael Peck of Round Rock, Texas; and Robert Hill (Katie) of Burlington, IA. and four daughters, Gina Lucero (Orlee) of Galesburg, IL; Laura Oestreicher (Chris) of Galesburg, IL; Betty Jo Spiker (Chad) of Oquawka, IL; and Shelly Ragsdale (Michael) of Clarksville, AR Pat has a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren surviving and a half sister Bonnie Westbay (Bud) of Knoxville, IL. He is preceded in his death by his father.

Lastly Lloyd worked part-time in maintenance at J. C. Penny in Burlington, Iowa. Lloyd retired in 1993. He enjoyed fishing, camping, bowling, traveling, and was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan. Lloyd also enjoyed living with people of other cultures and fathered four exchange students and eight Vietnamese foster children. Lloyd is survived by his wife Mary, two daughters, Judy (Jim) Mooney of Gladstone, IL and Debbie (Wayne) Crawley of Burlington, IA, one son, Russell (Dixie) Keever of Ft. Wayne, IN,. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren are also surviving. One sister, Ruby Gaddis (Jim) of Muskogee, OK, two brothers, Albert and Milton Keever of Oquawka, IL, Eight foster children, four exchange students, and many nieces and nephews. His early life was in Macomb and the family moved to Oquawka where he attended the Oquawka grade school, Tri-Valley Middle School, and then graduated from Union High School in the class of 1978. Steven began work with the Mark Twain restaurant in Burlington where he was a cook. He later was employed at Heartland Cardboard Box Company in Burlington, and then was employed 17 1/2 years at Walmart where he was a warehouseman in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Steven loved to go to garage sales and flea markets. He loved to go mushrooming and loved his Mountain Dew. Surviving him is his mother, Wanda L. Ruth married Donald Paul Remick on January 30, 1954 in Gladstone, Illinois and he preceded her in death on April 27, 1994. For many years Ruth was a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. She also was employed for a number of years at the Dimestore. She later worked for Lehigh Leopold Company in Burlington for a time and then was employed at Maytag in Galesburg, Illinois until her retirement in 1993. Ruth was known for and loved crafting and making craft items. She is a member of the Oquawka United Methodist Church in Oquawka, and it's United Methodist Womens. She loved working in her garden and tending to the yard. She liked going to play Bingo in Burlington, Iowa and going to the Casino. Her greatest love was of her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Rhonda Olson (Paul), Karen Slater (Bill), and her son, Rodney Remick all of Oquawka, Illinois. She has numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren also surviving. After that she was an Avon Lady selling Avon products locally for forty years. She also achieved the Avon Honor Society. Ada and her friend Janet Keever loved and would go to Bingo together. Ada and Janet were best friends whenever a new baby arrived. Ada was always there to help take care of others and with her sister, Carol, loved to go mushrooming together. They also shared many car rides-most every day. She is survived by her six sisters, Betty Brown of Monmouth, Illinois; Mary Dowell of Monmouth, Illinois, Dorothy Day of Erie, Illinois; Maida Johnson (Clifford) of Biggsville, Illinois; Catherine Anderson (Gene) of Burlington, Iowa; and Sandra Cox (Cecil) of LaHarpe, Illinois. David enjoyed going to the casino and watching football with a cold Keystone. David is survived by his wife Linda N. Obituary Preview: Faye Louise Christian Perry, age 95, of King's Daughters and Sons Retirement Home, Burlington, formerly of Oquawka, Illinois, passed away at 4:50 A.M. on Tuesday, October 31, 2018 at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. She was born on may 24, 1923 in Oquawka, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Henry and Daisy Alice (Olson) Ruberg.
Faye attended school in Oquawka, graduating High School in 1941. In 1957, at age 38, she graduated from Quincy College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. In 1961 she received her Master of Education degree from the University of Illinois, and later attended Western Illinois University for her Supervisory Certificate. She also attended many writing workshops in the Elder Hostel programs at various Universities throughout the Midwest.
In 1942 Faye married Lemuel E. Christian who was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium during World War II. In 1954 she married Richard K. Perry who preceded her in death in 1978.
Faye taught 3rd Grade for the Quincy Public Schools for 13 years. She was also an accomplished writer, publishing two books about growing up on the Mississippi River during the depression. The books, "River Rat, What's That" and "Barefoot by the River" were published when she was 90 and 93 years old.
Faye enjoyed nature and bird watching, reading, traveling, Scrabble, and crossword and word search puzzles. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center in Oquawka, helping others in the community, and was a 4H Leader. She was a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the Goldstar Wives of American and of the Dependents of theVerterans of the Battle of the Bulge. During WWII She was a plane spotter with the Civil Air Patrol, identifying planes to protect the Ordinance Plant.
Fay is survived by one daughter, Karen (James) Nichols of Camp Point, IL, two granddaughters; Su (Stan) Keith and Sarah (Enzo) Cullotta, and one great-grandson, Mason James Cullotta, nieces and nephews; David (Susie) Ruberg, Michael (Young) Ruberg, Tim (Teresa) Ruberg, James (Becky) Ruberg, Charles A. (Mary Anne) Buettner, Sharon Anders, Lori (Rick) Bohnenkamp, and Patricia Lidell. She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and six siblings; Mary R. Buettner, Thomas R. Ruberg, Ruth E. Mayo Coover, Walter F. Ruberg, Ruby J. Ruberg, and Eugene D. Ruberg, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Douglas; siblings; Juanita Schmidt, Clyde Simpson, William Simpson, Lon Simpson, Unice Simpson, and Delano Simpson.
Survivors include one son; Orin (Irene) Rockhold of Milan, IL, grandchildren; Kerri (Shaun) Druckmiller of Oak Park, IL, Aaron (Kym) Rockhold of Nashville, IN, and Tim Rockhold of Rockford, IL, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. On December 27, 1958, Julia married Lawrence L. Talbott in Oquawka, Illinois and he preceded her in death on January 15, 2001. Julia began work at Western Stoneware in Monmouth as a forklift operator. After obtaining her degree, she worked at Applegate Inn in Monmouth for a number of years as a LPN. Julia then worked Aledo Healthcare and then for the Grand View Terrace in Davenport, and the O.A. Armstrong Retirement Home. She last worked for Heartland Hospice in Davenport. Julia has been a past president and long-time member of the Milan Lions Club. After retirement Julia was the Lunch Lady at the Rock Island/Milan School district for a number of years and most recently care for the elderly in their final days. Julia is survived by two daughters, Marlene Stumphy (Dennis) of Aledo, IL and Cindy Renwick (Jim) of Monmouth, IL; seven sons, Larry W. Talbott (Carolyn) of Silvis, IL, James L Talbott of Milan, IL, Brad D. Talbott and Fiance' Cathy of Monmouth, IL, Steve D. Talbott of Sulphur, LA, Rodney C. Dick has repaired golf clubs and also has constructed various clubs for individuals. He loved to play golf locally and also enjoyed woodworking and riding Harley Davidson motorcycles. Dick was known for mowing many yards for people in the town of Biggsville, at no charge. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of Biggsville, Illinois and two daughters, Trina Adams (Tony) of Monmouth, Illinois and Judy Sweet (Bill) of Oquawka, Illinois. There are two grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren surviving.
