Neil Martin Schafer - May 25, 1959 - March 24, 2022

Departed: 03/24/2022 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Neil Martin Schafer born on May 25, 1959, passed away on March 24, 2022, at the age of 62 doing three things he loved, driving his car; out in the countryside; after a great workout at the gym. He passed unexpectedly and even though he went too soon he lived a full life.
Neil's love of cars started at the age of 2 when he received his first kid-sized version for his birthday, and he never looked back. He became a collector of toy cars and then, and as a teenager, the real ones; everything from Blazers and trucks to Corvettes and Camaros. He got a firsthand knowledge of this by working at his father's service station from a young boy to a young man. This gave him the opportunity to create his strong work ethic that he carried on throughout his life. These early experiences encouraged his love for buying, fixing and selling anything from vehicles to large motorhomes, to real estate and more.
Neil was a savvy businessman that re-invented himself many times in his life. He tried his hand at an 8-5 job with Pac Bell just out of High School and soon realized he had bigger dreams. In his mid-twenties passed his real estate agent & broker exam and began buying and selling real estate for clients and himself. As an entrepreneur he started several businesses including a frozen yogurt shop in Yountville, RV Dealership in Napa and with his son Keith, M3 General Engineering in Napa. He dabbled in other ventures such as a stockbroker creating much success in his life, but his favorite and most recent passion was to develop and build out properties with his closest friends by his side.
Born and raised in Napa Neil developed a great love of the outdoors. He spent the summers growing up at both Lake Berryessa and Lake Tahoe with his family, boating, fishing, skiing, swimming, camping and hunting. He loved sports and played competitive softball throughout his adult life. He cherished his hunting trips with his best friends.
When Neil started his own family, he carried on his love for all these things and shared them with his children, Keith and Nichole and then later with Brandyn, Justin and Desirae. Neil had multiple families, those with his parents & siblings, his first and second marriages, his friends and his famous "lunch crew." He was a genuine animal lover especially his dogs Zeus, Zina and Zoey.
Neil was a "get it done" kind of guy and if it wasn't perfect the first time, he' d do it again until it was. Neil went after what he wanted. He was a calculated risk-taker and determined force to reckon with. His determination was matched only to his loyalty to his closest friends and family. To be in his circle was gift. If you knew him, you knew how kind, thoughtful and responsible he was to those he cared for.
Neil is survived by his sister, Paula Dunn of Napa, Lisa Blackwood of Napa, D'Nyse Chisholm of Napa, his children, Keith Murdock, Nichole Murdock, Brandyn Duncan, Justin Duncan & Desirae Luna. His nephews, Donny Schafer, Jared Dunn, Kenny Schafer, Joel Dunn. His grandchildren, Keira, Kennedy, Maverick Neil Murdock and Olivia Miller. He was Papa Neil to Sophia, Kadence and Olivia Duncan. He was predeceased by his parents, Marvin and Dorothy Schafer, his brother, Wayne Schafer, nephew Jason Dunn and close friend Dave Hulbert.
There will be a Viewing at Tulocay Cemetery on Friday, April 8, 2022, between 12 pm and 5 pm. His Celebration of Life Memorial date and time will be posted on social media.

John Dunlap - September 11, 1922 - March 07, 2022

Departed: 03/07/2022 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Former Sen. John Dunlap, a champion of progressive causes, died on Monday, March 7 with his loving wife Mary Lu and his children by his side. He was 99 years old. John's life spanned 100 years in the history of the Napa Valley and the State of California. The roots of his family extend back to the founding of the town of Napa, wrapping John in a web of family and community history celebrated with gatherings for all occasions. He initiated or joined in family picnics, Lion's Club breakfasts, trips to the mountains, and, of course, fourth of July picnics at the Fitches' with flag football and homemade peach ice cream.
He was the youngest of the four sons of Amy Coombs and Harry Dunlap, raised on the family's prune ranch in Yountville. He graduated from Napa High School in 1940, enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley, and after four years in the Army during World War II, graduated from the UC in 1946, going on to Law School.
He would meet a girl from Pennsylvania, Janet Jack, traveling by train when returning to his Southern California Army base after a weekend visit with his parents in Napa. He offered her the window seat. They would talk through the night, and before they parted ways, he asked for her phone number.
After a Pennsylvania wedding, the couple briefly lived in San Francisco before settling in Napa where John joined the family law firm, Coombs and Dunlap. Over the late 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s John and Janet raised children and Cain together.
John was an energetic and fun father, friend, and community leader. Once the Viet Nam war drew his attention, though, his serious moral bearing rose to the top as he (to give one example) spoke out against the war at a public rally. His public speaking was part of his service work as he represented North Bay counties in the state Assembly from 1967 to 1974 and in the state Senate from 1974 to 1978. His service in the legislature was in keeping with family tradition, though he was a Democrat, while his great- grandfather, grandfather and uncle were all Republican lawmakers.
In the state Legislature, Dunlap led the fight to protect the California coastline. He authored the bill that created the California Agricultural Labor Relation Board. He carried legislation to ban the use of aerosols that were blamed for the depletion of ozone layer in the atmosphere. And he was a prime mover in the campaign to compel state government to stop investing in companies with business ties to South Africa, where the then-apartheid government denied rights to the black majority.
While John led with his politics, his deep interest in people enabled him to build relations of significance. Janet steered him in both through her love of psychology. After many years of marriage Janet died in 2007.
John met Mary Lu Kennelly in a bereavement class they joined after the deaths of their spouses in 2007. They were married in 2016. "I didn't know it could be this wonderful twice," John would later say.
Since John and Mary Lu shared a passion for progressive politics, it was only fitting that their honeymoon included a tour of the Obama White House. The honeymooners were honored at a family dinner and sat courtside at a Washington Mystics basketball game. Mary Lu's nephew coaches the WNBA team in Washington.
They also traveled to Holland, Belgium, Cuba, Alaska, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, New York, Boston, Quebec and Montreal, as well as to the annual Shakespeare festival in Ashland, Oregon. And, when home, they like to read aloud to one another. Dunlap was an avid bocce player. He and Mary Lu were active members of the Napa Valley Unitarian Universalists. Mary Lu was grateful to have spent the last 14 years with John. In an op-ed in his hometown newspaper, Dunlap - then age 97 - remembered high school friends and the contributions they made to their state and to their town. He also spoke to the Napa Historical Society about his family's place in the history of the county.
In addition to his wife, Mary Lu, John is survived by four children, Jane Dunlap of St. Paul, Minn., Peter Dunlap of Petaluma, David Dunlap of Napa and Jill Dunlap Golis of Santa Rosa. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law Margaret Dunlap of Petaluma and his son-in-law Pete Golis of Santa Rosa; by five grandchildren - Lauren Dunlap of Santa Monica and Trask Dunlap of Berkeley, Christopher Golis of San Francisco, Andrew Golis of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Leslie Truex of Charlottesville, Va. - and by five great-grandchildren.

Departed: 02/20/2022 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Vera Mae Marsh Hanson was born March 11, 1931 in Michigan. She was a vibrant person always in forward motion, eternally optimistic, and she loved to laugh. From her experiences of being raised during the Great Depression, Vera Mae embraced a life of service in helping others. She loved to tell stories of her childhood and preserved these stories in a book she wrote for her children and grandchildren which are cherished by her family. A lifelong Seventh-day Adventist she often expressed her love of keeping the Sabbath.
A good student, Vera Mae achieved both a bachelors and masters degree and became a dietician, graduating from Andrews University.
She then completed her dietetics residency via Loma Linda University at the White Memorial Hospital in Southern California. During Vera Mae's time there, she met the man she' d marry, Grayson Hanson, while ice skating with a church group. He spotted her from across the ice and the rest was history. To every date he brought a single rose which captured her heart. They married in 1957.
Family was Vera Mae's desire and focus and she and Grayson had 4 children. She loved being a mother. The family moved to the Napa Valley in 1971 and she and Grayson settled on acreage in the Oak Knoll appellation where they fulfilled the desire for their children to have a rural upbringing. She, Grayson, and their children built their own home on the property and a side business, the Berry Patch, growing/selling red raspberries and boysenberries locally.
Vera Mae had a successful career as a corporate dietician first managing the food service division for a chain of nursing homes. The last ten years of her working life she managed the school food service for the Santa Rosa School District. She received an award from the Department of Agriculture for her prescient work. A passionate volunteer, she also received awards both locally by the Napa Chamber of Commerce and nationally via President George Bush Senior's Daily Points of Light Program for: "her dedication to helping others." She and Grayson also went on many mission trips to build schools and churches with Maranatha Volunteers International.
Vera Mae was a devoted Grandma, she and her grandchildren have many shared memories of baking Christmas cookies and sweet rolls, and traveling together both outside and in the U.S.
Always active, Vera Mae notably climbed Mt. Whitney twice, ran/walked the Bay to Breakers several times, took countless exercise and dance classes, and was an avid walker trekking 2 to 3 miles a day until she was in her late eighties.
Her life and retirement were filled with music - playing the violin and piano and singing in choirs in her youth as well as later in life playing in the Napa Seventh-day Adventist Church orchestra and singing in the choir. Always desiring to learn she took courses in language, tole and doll painting, and quilting. Her quilting works of art will always be treasured by her family.
Vera Mae is survived by her husband Grayson, 4 children: sons Dean and David and their wives Debbie and Jill, her son Donald, daughter Susan and her husband Leif Kirschenbaum, her nephew Dennis Hunt and his wife Heller, and grandchildren Eli, Eva, Tess, Eric, Grayson, James, Olivia, and was predeceased by granddaughter Echo.
Vera Mae will be missed by her beloved family, friends, church family, and Napa community. A private family graveside service was held March 4, 2022 and a life celebration/memorial service is being planned for a later date at the Napa Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Sarah Dunlap Galbraith - February 20, 1941 - February 17, 2022

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Sarah Dunlap Galbraith, a homemaker with a brilliant analytical mind and deep love for her family, died peacefully of biliary tract cancer at her home in St. Helena, CA on February 17, 2022.
Born in 1941 to David Coombs Dunlap and Elizabeth Farrell Dunlap, Sarah grew up in the Bay Area.  She loved reading and excelled at school, even after a serious case of polio that left her with a permanently weakened back.  During part of World War II, she and her sisters lived in the Napa Valley, home to many of her Dunlap and Coombs relatives, and spent many holidays there afterwards.  Her family also took trips to the Sierra, which led Sarah to a lifelong love of the California mountains.
Sarah graduated from Berkeley High School in 1958.  After winning a National Merit Scholarship, she attended Radcliffe College in Cambridge, MA, graduating in 1962.  During her summers, she returned West to work as a cook for Sierra Club High Trips.  After college, she attended Harvard Law School, where she volunteered for the legal aid organization and was one of the few women in the class of 1965.
From 1965 to 1969, Sarah served as a law clerk for Justice Mathew Tobriner of the California Supreme Court.  In 1967, she started playing bridge with another young law clerk working for the Court, Alan Galbraith.  They married in 1969, and Sarah joined Alan in Washington DC, returning to California every year to visit and go camping in the Sierra with family and friends.
In Washington, Sarah raised her three children, tended to her eccentric border collie Socks, looked after her extended family, and built a community of friends.  She did not practice law, but her children grew up listening to her and Alan argue joyfully over all kinds of legal issues.  She taught her children to have integrity, to love books, to delight in mountains, to bake delicious cookies, and to express love through humor.  She was an expert puzzle-doer, writing early computer programs for fun on her Apple II Plus and filling in the New York Times crossword puzzle in a set order to keep it from being too easy.
In 2008, Sarah and Alan moved back to California, settling in St. Helena after Alan retired from the practice of law.  Sarah read countless books, did endless puzzles, and tried her best - unsuccessfully - to keep Alan from becoming too deeply mired in local government, even as they developed a strong network of friends in the Valley.  Together, they played bridge and cribbage, watched sporting events, enjoyed meals on the back porch, and delighted in each other’s surface foibles and deep affection.
Sarah made many trips during her retirement to visit her children and grandchildren and took them on several hiking adventures in her beloved Sierra.  She had a special gift for understanding children and made each grandchild feel special.  During the pandemic, she kept little Alan well-stocked with Legos; played online bridge every week with Ben and little Sarah; listened with delight to the preschool exploits of Ken; taught Bryce the names of all the counties of California; and read books over FaceTime every day to Kate and Noor until just two weeks before her death.  She was brave and uncomplaining in the year following her cancer diagnosis, passing away just days before her eighty-first birthday.
Sarah is survived by her husband Alan; her three children David, Katie, and Jean and their spouses Alyce, Adam, and Jeremy; her seven grandchildren Ben, Sarah, Kate, Alan, Noor, Ken, and Bryce; and her sister Louise.

JessieAnne Goldberg - October 07, 1951 - February 12, 2022

Departed: 02/12/2022 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: JessieAnne Goldberg passed away on the morning of February 12th in the loving arms of her three children and husband, Ron. She fought a courageous battle with cancer for a year and a half. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Agnes Kuhnen, and her brother Bill, and is survived by Ron, daughters Samantha (Tom) and Lyndsey (Jimmy), son Paul (Lia), sisters Suzie, Judy, Janie, Jill, Jean, and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Jessie was born and raised in Orland, California. After graduating from Orland High School she enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College. It was there that Ron spotted this beautiful girl when they shared the same geology class. When it was time to pair up for the once a week lab, Ron made his move. They became not only lab partners but, after long-distance dating for two years (Jessie had transferred to Chico State and Ron had transferred to Long Beach State), partners in life when they married on January 28, 1972. No doubt because their relationship formed in a geology class, their love rocked for the next 50 years.
Jessie and Ron lived in Long Beach for two years while Ron completed college and then made their home in Napa for the next 48. Jessie worked in various secretarial and administrative roles over the years, at the Napa Chamber of Commerce, the Napa Town and Country Fair, and the Napa Valley Unified School District. But the most important role to her was as mother, having taken time off work after each of her children were born, and being devoted to their care and well being for the rest of her life.
Jessie relished in simple moments: reading in the sun on her front porch, watching her favorite TV shows, walking the Alta Heights neighborhood with Ron, traveling by train across the country to visit with her daughters, meeting with her friends, and swimming with her grandchildren. Her greatest joy of all was spending time with Ron and her children and grandchildren (Kate, Julia, Jack, Jane, Lina, Marie, and John) at their Jonesville cabin in Lassen National Forest. Jessie created a family of love, generosity, and gratefulness. She was one true and gracious woman, and she will be missed. Indeed!
A celebration of Jessie's life is being planned for the spring. For information, email celebratejessieanne@gmail.com Donations in Jessie's name can be made to the Historic Jonesville Hotel Restoration and Preservation Fund, c/o Jonesville Cabin Owners Inc. PO Box 1950 Chico, CA 95927
