Dona Jean Potter - July 03, 1933 - April 06, 2024

Departed: 04/06/2024 (Tullahoma)
Obituary Preview: 7/3/33 - 4/6/24 “Dona Jean” Potter met so many , traveled so far across the country , loved , lived , enjoyed life as much as possible. She didn’t want a funeral or anything so this will suffice even though she’d think it was too much. She had four sons from two marriages. Jack, Tommy and Gino Bell (first marriage Jack Bell) and myself (second marriage)13 years after Gino. She divorced my father when I was maybe two and has been unmarried since. Parents Fannie ( Tonti) and Gene ( Devenangio) and sister Patty ( 93 and still loving Jesus but excited to see sis she says). She loved her dogs , Harleys ( 82 Superglide and an 81 Heritage) , traveling the USA by semi truck for 35 years and averaged 300 days a year until the end. She met Jeff Koenig in 1987 when he hauled swinging meat out of Nebraska and they started team driving. They never married but Jeff is one the finest people you’ll ever meet. They were best friends, driving partners , arguing buddies and memory makers until last Saturday. Jeff never left her side during her cancer or end of life. He will forever be family. Their favorite movie was Tombstone and they both loved the west and all its history. When mom passed Jeff took one of their favorite lines from Tombstone and leaned in one last time to mom and said “ thanks for always being there Doc”. Linda Beechum was her best friend and Linda was such a good person to mom until the end and even after. I appreciate the care and time she showed sitting with mom at the end with Jeff. Mom was in Easyriders magazine in an article about women riding their own bikes rather than on back. Drove her big rig in a time when that was not a normal for women. Ran several bars and restaurants in a way that got respect from all her clients. She would go without so you could eat or dress decent.  We never had a lot but she made sure we had enough. I’ve never seen anyone work as hard as she would work and love doing it. She was basically bulletproof until maybe 15 years ago when cancer popped up the first time. She beat that and acted like it was nothing. Cancer came back in 2019 ( google Dona Potter Vanderbilt for her story) and Car- T Cell immunotherapy came calling to get her through that one. If you knew her then you knew the infectious love of life she had, heard her stories of traveling and no doubt how proud she was of her sons and grandchildren. To say she will be missed would be an unreal understatement but to make her passing other than a celebration would not be fair. She was nearly 91 and lived 99% of her life on her terms , she had a hazardous tough occupation for most of my life and I never had to get a call saying she was in horrible accident or lost to us too soon. Many have not had the opportunity I have had to talk with her through a few illnesses and say EVERYTHING a person would want and for that I’m forever grateful. The pain is real and it will fade but I’ll forever see her in so many places.  Mom you ran your race so many times and nobody will ever match your pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who may want to attend the funeral or send condolences. They can also be a valuable tool for genealogists and researchers.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also offer assistance in crafting the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral service, burial, or memorial donations.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos with my obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper by contacting their obituary department directly. They may have specific guidelines and deadlines for submission. You can also ask your funeral home for assistance.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to control how they're remembered and to spare their loved ones from having to do it during a difficult time.

What's the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Yes! Friends, caregivers, or other individuals who were close to the person can write an obituary to honor their memory and provide closure for those who knew them.

What's the cost of publishing an obituary?

Can I make corrections to an already-published obituary?

If you need to make corrections to an already-published obituary, contact the publication or online platform where it was posted. They may be able to make changes or publish a correction notice.

How long does it take for an online obituary to be published?

The timeframe for publishing an online obituary can vary depending on the platform and their review process. Some may post immediately, while others may take several hours or days.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes! Many online obituary platforms provide options for sharing on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. This can help spread the news quickly and reach a wider audience.

What's the purpose of including funeral information in an obituary?

Including funeral information in an obituary allows friends and family to attend the service and pay their respects. It also provides details on how to send flowers, donations, or condolences.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to suggest charitable donations in lieu of flowers as a way to honor their loved one's memory and support a meaningful cause.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there's sensitive information about the deceased that you're unsure about sharing, it's best to err on the side of caution and omit it or consult with other family members before publishing.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, poems, or lyrics that resonated with the deceased can add a personal touch and make the tribute more meaningful.

What's the difference between a traditional obituary and a celebration of life?

A traditional obituary tends to focus on the factual information about the deceased, while a celebration of life is a more personalized tribute that highlights their personality, accomplishments, and impact on others.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! Some online platforms allow you to create video tributes that combine photos, music, and narration to celebrate the life of your loved one.

How long are online obituaries archived for?

The archiving period for online obituaries varies depending on the platform. Some may keep them available indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.
