Linda Kay Johnson - September 12, 1957 - February 28, 2024

Departed: 02/28/2024 (Elizabethtown)
Obituary Preview: Linda Kay Chaney Johnson was born September 12, 1957 in Russellville, Arkansas to Elizabeth A. (Smith) Chaney and Vernon T. Chaney Sr. She was one of four children: Sonja, Vernon Jr, and Michael. She lived the life of an Air Force child moving around the country until her teens when her dad, Chief Master Sergeant Vernon T. Chaney, settled at his final duty station at Little Rock Air Force Base.
It was at this time, she actively participated in Future Business Leaders of America and Future Teachers of America at Jacksonville High School before graduating in 1975. Donning a bikini, she would regularly wash her car in the driveway of her parent’s house which caught the eye of a neighbor, Dana Mark Johnson, who would become the love of her life. They married February 05, 1977.
Soon after marriage, she was diagnosed with Lymphoma which she fiercely fought and overcame. Linda’s husband was employed by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) resulting in family moves more than 11 times, living in Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, California, Okinawa, Arizona, Puerto Rico and Kentucky. With each transfer, Linda ensured minimum disruption to the family with the children's needs her first priority.
Linda loved reading and could often be found reading romance novels. Every job she took, she was surrounded by books and magazines. She worked at several bookstores in Texas, California and Arizona; she also worked at the Anderson News Company in Okinawa, Arizona and Kentucky. She continued to work until she suffered a heart attack in 2014.
While Linda read, she would be found drinking Swiss Mocha, Dr. Pepper or a Mocha Frappe. She was incredibly crafty and enjoyed cross-stitching, basket weaving and creating stained glass. She embraced evolving technologies: building computers and helping her sons fix their gaming computers. Her family would honestly joke that she was more handy than her husband as she easily fixed various appliances around the house and learned to tile from her father. She loved her family and was fascinated by genealogy; she immersed herself in studying her ancestry starting in the early 2000s. She would jokingly tell people she was “seeing dead people” as she traveled across the country to visit graveyards and research and collect artifacts.
While she was known to many as Linda or Linnie, her favorite title was Mom which she became in 1984 with the birth of her son, Dreux Michael Johnson in Abilene, Texas. Two more children followed thereafter: Autumn Monet Jones in 1985 and Dustin Marc Johnson in 1988 while stationed in Lompoc, California.
Embracing motherhood, Linda did everything she could to wrap her children with love. She volunteered to help lead Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, went to every soccer, football, cheer, baseball, basketball game, and theatre production. Whether it was a Ghostbuster, Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fairy, or a clown-there wasn’t a costume for Halloween she couldn’t create for her children.
As her children grew up, she beamed when she had all of her children under one roof. She made each home they lived in like a hug- warm, comforting, and loved. She always ensured that she made their favorite meal of bulgogi and fried rice. She cherished the laughter, talks and mild heckling with her kids.
In 2013, Linda became a Nana and treasured this title as much as mom. She loved to spoil her grandkids and spend time with them. She ensured that she made it to their soccer games and performances and loved doing puzzles with them, reading with them and surprising them with a small gift or McDonald’s Happy Meals. Her grandchildren fondly recall trips with their Nana and when Nana would help them with their homework. Her greatest joy was her family and she dedicated her life to them.
Linda Johnson leaves behind broken hearts and a family who will miss her each day of their lives. She leaves behind her husband, Dana Johnson; siblings: Sonja & Joseph Davis of Ellamore, West Virginia and Michael & Dana Chaney of Carrollton, Texas; children: Dreux Johnson and his wife Yu Sun (grandson: Felix) of North Potomac, Maryland, Autumn Jones (granddaughters: Harpyr, Kinley and Carysn) of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and Dustin Johnson and his fiancé, Kesia Morrison of North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Linda Johnson is preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Chaney and Vernon T Chaney Sr. and her brother, Vernon “Tom” Chaney Jr.
Visitation will be at Trowbridge Funeral Home from 4PM-6PM on Thursday, March 7 with a memorial service immediately following.
