Brenda Fields Powers - November 14, 1963 - March 22, 2022

Departed: 03/22/2022 (Rice)
Obituary Preview: Brenda Fields Powers, 58, of Powhatan, left this world Tuesday, March 22, 2022. It saddens us to see her go so sudden and unexpected. She is survived by her mother, Betty Neely; children, Ashley Powers, Freddie "Lee" Morrison, Jr., Donald Windsor; 9 grandchildren; fiancé, Timothy Davidson; sister, Robin Adams; brother, Michael Adams; and numerous other family members and friends. She had gifted her favorite poem to her daughter, and she wants to share it with others as well; "Footprints": One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord. After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you."
Brenda will be missed at the Sunnyside Fruit and Vegetable Stand here in Powhatan at Llewellyn's Garage and Towing, where she had worked for many years.
A Celebration of life will be held from 6 PM to 8 PM Wednesday, April 6, 2022, at Bennett and Barden Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 3215 Anderson HWY. Interment will be Thursday, April 7, 2022 at 1 PM in Trinity Memorial Gardens, 22482 Prince Edward HWY, Rice, VA.

Robin Leigh Stone - April 26, 1963 - March 07, 2022

Departed: 03/07/2022 (Rice)
Obituary Preview: Robin (Leigh) Bates Stone, age 58, joined God in paradise on March 7, 2022 at home in Michigan surrounded by her family. She was married to Matthew D. Stone Sr. for 26 years, but they spent almost 30 total years bugging the crap out of each other.
Born in Farmville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Robert Lee Bates and Doris Ann (Boyd) Bates. She graduated from Nottoway High School where, if you examine her actual records, attendance was apparently optional. She was employed at several places throughout her life, though two stand out. First on the list was being a single mom of two young boys while also working as a corrections officer at Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville, where she met and eventually married a funny medic also employed at the jail, the love of her life, Matt. The other notable workplace, and the longest joy of her life in both years and patience required, was being a stay at home mother for the two boys and the two hellions that she and that funny medic decided to create for some reason. Together, they tried, and succeeded for the most part, to raise four children, three boys and a little girl.
Robin was a member of Pathway Community Church in Brighton, Michigan. She enjoyed crocheting, saving tiny bottles to "make crafts with later", watching Hallmark movies, and repeatedly showing her favorite finger to her children and family. She will be remembered for her ability to throw anything into a pot and somehow create a five star dish Gordon Ramsy himself would praise, and the love and affection she showed to everyone around her, even if it was masked by sass and attitude.
She is survived by her mother Doris A. Bates, her sister Peggy A. Lawson, her husband (the funny medic) Matthew D. Stone Sr., her four children, Robert E. Crowder, Richard T. Crowder, Matthew D. Stone Jr.. and Caroline A. Stone, her many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, yada, yada, yada… She is additionally survived by her pets, a bossy cat named Delilah, and a pleasently stupid dog named Moose. She was preceded in death by her grandmother and her father.
There will be two separate memorials. The memorial in Michigan will be held at The Well Church (2376 Genoa Business Park Drive, Brighton, MI 48114) on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 1 pm. There will be time for visitation and fellowship following the service.
There will be a second memorial at Farmville United Methodist Church (212 High Street, Farmville, VA 23901) on Friday, April 29, 2022 at 1:30 pm with time for visitation beginning at 1 pm. Robin will be interred at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice, VA at 3 pm.
We are choosing to honor Robin's wish that no one wear black or be in formal attire at the services. She expressed the hope that attendees would wear casual clothes and happy colors to celebrate her life.

Betty Jane Weldon - April 05, 1939 - December 23, 2021

Departed: 12/23/2021 (Rice)
Obituary Preview: Betty Jane Weldon was born in Fairfield County, South Carolina on April 5, 1939. She entered into eternal rest on December 23, 2021 in Columbia, South Carolina.  She was the eleventh child born to the union of Willie and Bertha (Rabb) Weldon.
Betty Jane was educated in the public schools of Fairfield County, graduating from the newly established McCrorey-Liston High School in 1958. She received her A.B. degree from Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina in 1963 and later completed her M.S. degree in Early Education Administration from Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia.
Teaching was one of Betty Jane’s passions from an early age. She began her career as an elementary school teacher in Warrenton, Georgia before moving to Charlotte Court House, Virginia, where she accepted a position as a third-grade teacher at Drakes Branch Elementary School during its first year of integration. She later taught at Bacon District Elementary School in Saxe, Virginia and Central Elementary School in Charlotte Court House, Virginia. She also served as Projects Director, Supervisor of the Media Center, and Coordinator of the Chapter I program for Reading Instruction at the Charlotte County School Board Office before taking early retirement from the Charlotte County public schools at the age of 55.
Betty Jane fell in love with Charlotte Court House, Virginia—a southern rural town that shared much in common with the Fairfield County community she grew up in. She was a Girl Scout leader, and an active member of the Charlotte County Education Association, the NAACP, the Charlotte County Democratic Party, and the Retired Teacher’s Association. She also served as an elder and session member of the Gethsemane Presbyterian Church in Drakes Branch, Virginia, where she sang on the choir and participated in the Gethsemane Presbyterian Women’s group.
As the family historian, Betty Jane meticulously traced the roots of her family tree from the “Big House” in Jackson Creek, where her sharecropper parents first got married, to Jenkinsville, and ultimately to the Greenbrier Community where they bought the “old Walter McKintry Plantation” and built their home. Family reunions were enriched by the many pictures and heirlooms that she collected and the many stories that she shared. She was the primary caregiver for her mother, Bertha, and oldest sister, Marjorie, in their final years. And the entire family was blessed by her vibrant spirit and zest for life.
Betty Jane was preceded in death by seven sisters – Annie Lee Sancho, Bertha Weldon, Marjorie Weldon Owens, Mary Ellen Lewis, Mattie Owens, Odaris Weldon, and Oreather Brown – and three brothers – Charles Weldon, Paul Weldon, and Willie Thomas Weldon. She leaves behind one sister, Ruth Daniels, and one brother, John Henry Weldon, as well as dozens of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will all miss her dearly.
