Obituary Preview: Jerry Lee Cotton, aged 88, of Chickasha, Oklahoma, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
Jerry was born on January 04, 1936, in Bradley, Oklahoma, to Bessie and Raymond "Dillard" Cotton. He was raised alongside his siblings Raymond, Ronnie, Lois, Virgil, and Gilbert. Jerry attended a one-room country school house in Alex, Oklahoma. After his father passing from cancer following his return from WWII, Jerry and his brothers worked various jobs from a very young age.
Jerry was adventurous from childhood and was known to hop trains from town to town. He was always ornery, but a hard worker. He was handsome, charismatic, adventurous, funny, and the best brother to his siblings.
He met Wilma Horn in high school, and the two married as teenagers in 1952. From that union, he was blessed with one daughter, Doris June. Jerry began his career in the oil field in the late 1950s, with it becoming a passion. He chased the oil patches across the country for over 30 years. Jerry met Mildred Nanney in 1958 while working in California, and from that relationship, he was blessed with his daughter Alice Jerri. Working and being on the road were when he was happiest. Many heard him say, "you don't tell this racehorse whoa!"
While working in Butte, Montana, Jerry married Barbara Keene in 1968. From that union, he was blessed with his daughter Annette Lee and sons Jerry Lee and infant son Ronald Ray. He also instantly became a father to Barbara’s eldest daughter Peggy Jean. They traveled the country with his brother Ronnie and his family following the oilfield company they worked for at the time. They made wonderful memories across many states together. A quest for adventure, means for survival at a young age, and few precarious decisions along the way led him to spend time in prison. He shared how his time served impacted his spiritual life. He leaned into and built his faith while working in the prison ministry. Jerry developed his ability to paint and was known for creating countless beautiful canvases in what he called "the school of hard knocks."
Following this time, he was off to Newcastle, Wyoming, to work the crown, down and all around. During this time he married Clara Schulze in 1974. From that union, he was blessed with his son Everett Charles. Jerry loved gardening, woodworking, and teaching his children and grandchildren how to drive.
Jerry was happiest in the mountains of Colorado. He loved hiking, riding horseback, ATV-ing, and hunting for gold. He met Deborah Wagner in Parkersburg, West Virginia in 1983. The two were married for over thirty years and blessed with two daughters, Courtney Nicole and Carrie Louise. They enjoyed many decades of Rocky Mountain camping trips. This became a Cotton family tradition in which the entire family was blessed with many memories.
Jerry went to work at Turner Welding where he was known as "Hot Shot Cotton" for over twenty years. He started working side by side with founder Dale Turner. As the company grew, he began making deliveries all over the country. You couldn't name a destination that he didn't say, "I know right where that's at kid." Jerry also worked for Mudhopper Oilfield Services for ten years, driving all over the country for them as well.
Many people in the community referred to him as the father or grandfather figure they never had. He never met a stranger, was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, and always wanted to help anyone get to a better place in life. In his last years, he had the opportunity to live with his daughter Carrie and her family. Kaitlin, Audrey, "PeeWee", and Hunter enjoyed having this special time with him playing checkers, learning to drive, playing dominoes, and a game of poker.
Jerry is survived by his daughter Doris Stegall; daughter Alice Burruss and husband Sherman; daughter Annette Morrison; son Jerry Morrison and wife Barbara; son Everett Schulze and wife Cheri; daughter Carrie Ditmore and husband Joshua, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren who lovingly called him Papa, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to count.

He was part of a big extended family that enjoyed time together in Texas on the family ranch, playing with all his cousins and causing his grandparents great anxiety. This is where he started his motto of "Its easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission". He was a curious boy with a huge heart. The young Kirk family moved quite often, but Oklahoma City is where Steve called home. He graduated from Moore High School class of 1979. Steve and his loyal "posse of friends" would drive the streets of Moore, spend hours in boats at Lake Eufaula, and find every path, trail, and pond to learn life lessons on how to become men. This is when he learned the trade of Tile Setter from his dad along with his brothers. He was an adventurous teenager with a huge heart. Steve's hobbies were rich and varied like his friendships. He was a golfer, hunter, self-taught musician, and artist. His biggest hobby was collecting friends and "kids" that would call him Dad. He was close with his parents and brothers and spoke with them daily. He had a contagious smile, never met a stranger and was always first to make someone feel comfortable and important. His happy place was Lake Eufaula with his family. He would choose a sunrise or sunset on the boat with those he loved over a fancy vacation. He loved his family fiercely and unconditionally and would always answer his phone to visit or be called to duty to rescue someone from a flat tire, or from eating alone at lunch, or to just sitting with someone who was hurting. He was an active man with a huge heart. In 1989 Steve married his wife, Jennifer Smith, in a ceremony in Stockton, Missouri. They made a commitment to each other and never wavered from that. They dreamed of a tight knit loving family with a place their kids would always call home. Together they raised 3 children, Megan (Brian) Thomas, Taylor (Caleb) Neal, Tanner Kirk (Lindsey Yeager). Charles Harold Spiva - August 20, 1934 - January 14, 2024

Departed: 01/14/2024 (Tuttle)
Obituary Preview: Charles Harold Spiva, age 89, of Jet, Oklahoma, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Baptist Village in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Charles was born August 20, 1934 in Jet, Oklahoma, on the family farm, beloved son of Edith and Clyde Spiva. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M beginning his lifetime support cheering on his Cowboys.
Charles met the love of his life, Mary Ann, through an introduction by a former girlfriend. Mary Ann stated she knew he was the one from the very first moment she saw him. Charles has said that he doesn't remember much about that particular date but he does remember that she was wearing gold shoes. This was the start of a 55-year marriage that truly represented what it meant to live “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.” As they have grown older, they enjoyed reading together and sitting and watching the farm operation, especially the cattle that lived on their land. But they had quite a few grand adventures in traveling after their children were grown. They took cruises to Alaska, Panama and the Caribbean and traveled by train to California, as well as other varied trips. But their absolute favorite places to go were anywhere their children and grandchildren were.
Charles and Mary Ann had two children, Kathy Jo and Chad Douglas. Charles was a good man and a great dad. He was present for his family. He was involved in so many different organizations throughout his whole life but never seemed to be absent from extracurricular activities or evenings at home. He had an incredible ability to both play hard and work hard. He taught his children about life by living out his example on the farm. Simple every day chores such as how to milk cows, make butter, raise and butcher chickens, load and unload hay bales, locate and care for baby animals of all kinds were a constant lesson in the value of labor, the cycles of living and dying, and the complexity of God’s creation. Watching crops like wheat and alfalfa grow in the sometimes-desperate conditions of NW Oklahoma taught the desperate need for faith. Someone larger than the simple farmer working the soil was the one ultimately in charge of the rain and the sun. Charles absolutely loved being a grandpa and great-grandpa. He adored every single one of his grandchildren and tried to attend every event he possibly could. Even in his final days he was daily wearing apparel from his grandchildren’s universities. It was the only time he would agree to wear OU. The walker he was using before his stroke was Arkansas red and there was a WestMoore sticker waiting to be put on it. He and Elyse could just sit and smile at each other for the longest time. There’s just some kind of special connection between the very old and very young.
Charles was a man of God. Following Jesus’ example, he was able to be a strong leader and yet have a servant heart. He didn’t preach about his faith. He chose to demonstrate it in all that he did – loving his wife, parenting his children, farming on his own and for others. He was on countless school, church and community/area organizations providing strong leadership as needed but always shied away from receiving any attention. One of his greatest passions was Kairos Prison Ministry. Rain or shine, he was always excited to get to go and worship with the men in Helena. They were his friends and he was as concerned about their lives and faith as anyone else in his life. Even after he was well past retirement age, he continued to serve others by delivering prescription medications to the homebound and then delivered meals to the elderly and homebound after his second (or third) retirement.
Charles is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Ann; daughter, Kathy Purintun and husband, Darin; son, Chad Spiva and wife, Jennifer; grandchildren, Benjamin, Nicholas, Payne, Bryson and Meghan; one great-granddaughter, Elyse; niece, Linda Potter Edwards and her son, Dustin; and innumerable extended family members and friends he considered family. Charles is preceded in death by his parents, Edith and Clyde Spiva; sister Betty Jean Potter and husband J.D
Celebration of Life for Charles Spiva is Saturday, January 27, at 11:00 am at Jet Community Church. All are invited and we would encourage everyone to send or bring notes or cards with special memories of our dad/grandpa/husband. We want to remember and honor him for years to come. Please send cards or special notes to: PO Box 956/Tuttle OK 73089 Memorials may be made to: Jet Community Church or Kairos Prison Ministry of Oklahoma P O Box 54383 Oklahoma City OK 73154
