Norma Brinegar Jones - April 15, 1929 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Statesville)
Obituary Preview: Norma Brinegar Jones, age 95, recently of Statesville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at the Gordon Hospice House on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, following a brief illness. She was born April 15, 1929 in Ashe County, North Carolina, the daughter of William Marvin Brinegar and Cleo Stuart Brinegar.
Norma spent most of her childhood living on a small farm outside of West Jefferson, NC on the banks of the New River. During her late teens, she played basketball for Healing Springs High School and spent a summer working at Shatley Springs. Shortly after this, she left West Jefferson to spend time traveling with her aunt, Stella Stuart. When their travels took them to Rock Hill, SC, Norma took a job at Celanese and decided to stay. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert D. “Bob” Jones. They were married in March of 1950 and within a year had welcomed their first child, to be followed by three more children over the next several years.
Norma was gifted in working with young children and won a special award during her year as a preschool teacher for special needs children in Rock Hill, SC. The following year the family moved to Greenville, SC where she spent many years teaching three-year-olds at the White Oak Baptist Church Preschool. A new opportunity came when she was offered a job at Pendleton Manor private assisted living facility in Greenville and discovered she was also gifted in working with senior adults. She was much loved at Pendleton Manor and was sought after as a private sitter in addition to her regular duties there. Norma and Bob enjoyed the opportunity to do some traveling during their time in Greenville and were able to take several special trips. In June of 1994, the two of them made what was to them their most special trip ever, traveling to Los Angeles, CA, where they spent some quality, fun time catching up with their eldest son and his family, including their first granddaughter.
After 44 years of marriage, Bob unexpectedly passed away in July of 1994. Several months later, Norma made the decision to move to Columbia, SC, where she would again use her gift with young children to spend time loving on her two young granddaughters there. Later she would move to Muncie, IN to spend time with two other grandchildren. Then in January of 2011, she moved to Statesville, NC to be near her daughter’s family. Norma chose Brookdale Peachtree to be her home in Statesville. She enjoyed living there and made many new friends. She was loved by all who knew her—residents, staff, and even guests who came to visit the facility.
In addition to her parents, Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Jones. She was also predeceased by five brothers, Leonard Brinegar, William Vaughn Brinegar, Carl Ray “Joe” Brinegar, Billy Dean Brinegar, G.D. “Pete” Brinegar, and one sister, Ruth Brinegar Powers. She is survived by her four children, Robert D. “Dobby” Jones, Jr. of Cape Canaveral, FL, Robin McDonald (Pat) of Statesville, NC, John Mark Jones (Leigh) of Columbia, SC, and David Andrew Jones (Betsy) of Berea, KY; seven grandchildren, Patrick McDonald, Kelley Jones-McDowall (Daryl), Catherine McDonald, Katty Jones, Kelsey Jones, Benjamin Whaley-Jones, and Julia Whaley-Jones; three great-grandchildren, Luke, Natasha, and Joseph Paton McDowall; several nieces and nephews, and one sister, Bobbie Brinegar Miller.
