Departed: 10/13/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Theodore Andrew Brandlin 1929 - 2019
Theodore Andrew Brandlin played out his 9th inning and hit his final home run into Heaven on October 13, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. Theodore was born on January 5, 1929 to Theodore and Dorothy Brandlin in Napa, remaining living here all his 90 years. Ted attended elementary, junior high school, and graduated from Napa High School in 1947.
Ted started work as a young boy working at Tulocay Cemetery opening the gates in the morning before school and closing them at night. He only lived one block from Tulocay so it was easy for him to ride his bike to do his job. He also worked for Modern Milk Dairy delivering milk and for Berglund Tractor.
On May 3, 1948 Ted went to work for PG&E at 19 years old. He worked in the gas department as a pipefitter. He was a hard working, honest, loyal employee for 42 years, retiring from PG&E on May 3, 1990. Ted was well liked by his co-workers, maintaining many friendships throughout his life. He was still in touch with his co-worker and best friend, Al Lang.
As a young boy Ted was always playing baseball with his friends, leading him to play fastpitch softball at Napa High where he was team captain. He was well known around Napa for being a talented and scrappy 3rd basemannot many balls getting past him! In 1946, when Ted was 17 years old he played for Odd Fellows, then moving on to play for Rothchild Jewelry, American Legion, Napa Merchants, Rough Riders, Kaiser Steel, Sheriffs, and Stornettas Dairy.
During all these years of Ted traveling to play softball he played in three Fastpitch Softball World Series and multiple state and city tournaments. Ted won many trophies, MVP awards, and has many years of newspaper articles in scrapbooks about his teams. Throughout the years, he was always a team player, encouraging his teammates and being a good sport. He loved baseball and would watch every game he could on t.v. He would support his son Dennis, who still plays hardball, and went to his games for years. Hes even in some of Dennis team pictures! Ted could be seen watching Dennis playing ball, as he would have his small portable radio to his ear catching a baseball game.
"Teddy" as many of his friends called him, was a life-long Dodger fan. Always wearing his LA Dodgers hat, friends and family would lovingly tease him about his loyalty to a non-local team. He would just smile. Ted passed away wearing his blue Dodger T-shirt.
Ted also played basketball, was on a bowling league, and was a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West for over 50 years.
Ted met Shirley Anderson in 1953 when Shirley would go to watch him play softball at the Napa Fairgrounds. They were married on February 20, 1954. Together they raised their son and daughter. Family camping, Disneyland, lots of family parties filled his life with happiness.
After he retired, Ted and Shirley traveled to 42 states, the Caribbean Islands, Panama Canal, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and Canada. They took several paddle wheel cruises along the Mississippi River.
Ted, lovingly call "Pa" by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, said how blessed and happy he was to have his family around him all the time. He spent many years camping with family, creating lasting memories, love, and laughter. Pa was a humble, genuine, kind, honest, loyal, and loving husband, dad, grandpa, great grandpa, and friend.
Ted is survived by his loving son Dennis (Melody), daughter Valerie (Mark), grandchildren: Jamie (Jill), Phillip (Melissa), Benjamin (Stephanie), Amy (Rey), great grandchildren: Kaden, Wyatt, Avery, and Emma. Ted was predeceased by his parents, loving wife Shirley, and granddaughter Colleen. Phyllis Jean Gittings - October 27, 1927 - September 14, 2019

Departed: 09/14/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Phyllis Jean Gittings passed away at her home surrounded by family on Saturday morning, 14 September 2019, 6 weeks short of her 92nd birthday, from liver and lung cancer that was diagnosed on 8 August 2019. After her diagnose, she entered Collabria Hospice care in her Napa home. She had a fulfilling life as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandma. Phyllis was born on 27 October 1927, in Seattle, Washington to Ted and Wana Moody. She graduated from West Seattle High in 1945. She had one sister, Gayle Gardner, who was 5 years younger and passed in 2010
She then entered Washington State University in Pullman, Washington. Phyllis had a fun 2 years there and enjoyed all aspects of college life. Her weekends were filled with different dates, parties, football games, and studies.
At a college street dance in March 1947, she met a young man, Cyrus Brooks Gittings, who came running after her. Cyrus had to wait a few weeks before he could see her again, as her dating calendar was so full. When asked, Phyllis said that what most attracted her to Cyrus was that he was so cute and handsome. Cyrus would never leave her alone and followed her all around campus, but she liked how persistence he was. Obviously, she let him catch up and to get to know him better, because 5 months later they were married on 29 August 1947 in Seattle. From 1947 to 1951, they lived in Seattle and Chicago. In 1952, Cyrus joined the Air Force and they were assigned at duty stations all over the world, including Norton AFB in San Bernardino, Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama, Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi, Portland, Oregon, Okinawa, Japan, and the last 11 years (1959 to 1970) of his Air Force career at Amarillo AFB, Texas. Phyllis was always a loving supportive Air Force wife and mother in all those many Air Force moves. Son Larry was born in 1952 in Seattle and daughter Pam was born in 1957 in Okinawa. Soon after he retired as a Major, they moved to their present home in Napa, California. Phyllis was preceded in death, by her husband Cyrus in 2005 and will be deeply missed by her two children, son Larry and wife Jeannette Gittings of Vacaville and daughter Pamela Gittings and her partner of 20 years, Richard Mejia of Napa. Four grandchildren, Katherine Markes, Larry Scott Gittings, Junior, Margo Teter and her husband, Shawn, last of all, Hailey Van Vorhis and her husband, Jake. She was also blessed with 5 great grandchildren, Kassandra Allen and her husband, Trace, Jayla, Rosie, Jaxon, and Wynter
The things most valued in her life revolved around her family, friends, and her beloved Napa Methodist Church. She has been a member of that church since the early 1970's. In fact, she worked in the Napa Methodist Nursery for over 30 years, from the 70's to 2004. She actually babysitted kids of kids she had watched years before. Wendy, a young mom around 1998, remembers bringing in her new 2 week old baby and Phyllis held her the whole hour of church and when Wendy came back, Phyllis was still holding her.
She also sang in the church choir and the senior center choir for over 30 years. She took exercise classes at the senior center for many many years. After her husband died in 2005, after 58 years of marriage, she and friends went on many cruises and trips to different countries around the world, even to the holy land in Israel, when she was almost 90. In 2009, at age 82, she climbed Diamond Head in Hawaii with her son, Larry.
She had a wonderful 90th birthday celebration at the Napa Methodist Church that was attended by over 66 family and friends. Friends from the church, the senior center, and ALON attended.
Soon after her 90th birthday, she fractured 2 back vertebrae and her health deteriorated after that, till her passing. Her mind was sharp till the end. She had a lifelong passion in doing crossword puzzles and even was completing those crossword puzzles day before she passed.
Phyllis will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and those in the Napa Methodist congregation.
The family wishes to thank Collabria Hospice and the Napa Methodist Church for their compassion and care during this time.
Friends, family, and the congregation of the Napa Methodist Church are all invited to attend a celebration of life memorial at 3 PM on Sunday, 20 October 2019 at Napa's First United Methodist Church . The Pastor Marylee Sheffer will officiate.

Esther was born in a small stone house in Jordan Valley, Oregon to Harold and Edith Skinner. The old stone house still stands and is now a popular coffee shop on the road from Winnemucca to Boise. She enjoyed several cross country trips with the family, camping and visiting national parks along the way. She loved cooking and entertaining guests. Martha Dora Stutzman - November 08, 1921 - August 12, 2019

Departed: 08/12/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Martha Stutzman passed away peacefully at the age of 97 on this beautiful summer day of August 12, 2019.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband John Henry Stutzman on August 6th 2009. Martha was born in Vallejo in 1921 to Claud M Ellis and Bessie Wolf Ellis. Her relatives were pioneers settling in Vallejo as early as 1886. She had fond memories growing up in Vallejo and enjoyed visiting her fathers, Ellis Dairy and Creamery, which was located near the school and frequented by her friends where they enjoyed delicious milk shakes after school. One of her very exciting days was a trip piloted by her Dad in his BiPlane at age 8. (Her mom found out after the flight) oops! This may have incited a degree of exploration, travel and adventure, which would follow her throughout her life.
Perhaps her most favorite memory of growing up in Vallejo was meeting our father in the high school marching band, where she played the piccolo and our father played the clarinet and tenor sax. They had a lifelong appreciation of music and enjoyed singing in the church choir under the direction of Norman Skeels and Travis Rogers. Support for the Napa Valley Symphony and Chamber Music of Napa was important to them as they promoted and helped to sell season tickets. They also enjoyed attending Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco for a series of classical concerts, which became for them a way to experience the music, which plays an enriching part in all of our lives.
On June 29th 1941, our parents married at Vallejo First Baptist Church and remained married for 68 years. In 1950 they moved to Napa and built their first Photography Studio which they operated alone for the first couple of years. Martha did bookkeeping, printing, photography, and managed the business. On many weekends during the summer, they would photograph weddings. They enjoyed working and being a part of many celebrations of joy. The Photography Center specialized in portrait, wedding, baby, commercial, aerial and landscape photography. They were proud to have the first one-hour color processor in Napa. All of their children worked in their business and Joan Wayne continued until they sold the business in 1998.
They designed and had their home built in 1960 on a foothill in west Napa with views to the east of Napa. Our family enjoyed hosting summer gatherings around the pool. The familys main sport was boating and waterskiing. On Wednesdays during the summer, we took a day off and headed up to Lake Berryessa for a day of skiing, swimming, and picnicking. Waterski days always included my moms famous potato salad and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. We learned to ski from a young age, this included friends, cousins, and anyone else willing to give it a try. We spent a week or two in the summer at Trinity, Shasta, Donner or Sly Park with friends and family for a memorable camping and skiing vacation.
Our mom was a member of the Eastern Star Gateway Chapter #3 for 79 years. Our parents were also members of the Napa Biographical and Genealogical Societies.
From a young age Martha was raised in a loving home that believed faith in God is important and that our lives should be a reflection of his love and glory. The American Baptist Missionaries serve in over 20 countries showing love to millions by providing, healthcare, food and education to some of the most under served parts of the world. This opportunity to give to missions and the mandate to go into all of the world to share Gods love was promoted by our mom on a local, as well as a regional level.
Martha was predeceased by her brother Robert William Ellis in 1926 and her sister Edna Claudine Ellis in 2003. She is survived by her sister Helen Ellis Freeland of Loomis and Dr. Harlan Ellis of Visalia. Also her 2 sons Jack and Dave Stutzman and her 3 daughters and sons in law, Joan and Bill Wayne, Laura and Doug Smith, Jean and Steve Hebenstreit, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Martha was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all of her family and friends. The family wishes to express their appreciation of care from Dr. Heather Paciotti from Kaiser, Nancy Trego PA Kaiser, Kaiser Hospice, The Meadows staff of dedicated, hard working, and caring nurses and all auxiliary care givers. Memorial gifts in Marthas honor may be made to Missions c/o Crosswalk Church of Napa 2590 First Street, Napa, CA 94558. A service to celebrate her life will be held here at Crosswalk Church on Saturday, September 28th, 2019 at 11:00 am. Funeral Home: Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel 2383 Napa-Vallejo Highway Napa, CA

John D. Newbold - May 15, 1952 - June 03, 2019

Departed: 06/03/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: John made the celestial transition June 3 and sent a temblor through legions of his friends that must have made its mark on the Richter Scale.
A dear friend Kelly says it best…"Yes, its true.... John was snatched off the planet from us. Unfair, unexpected and unbelievable. He had a fatal heart attack, something we joked about often... now, not funny. His presence in our lives will be sorely missed but somehow I think well still feel his vibe (irritating and frustrating as ever!) A truer, loyal, loving friend is hard to come by. I will stop crying at some point, just not yet.... I think he would be pleased by that. You all that truly knew him know what I mean. SAD". JoAnn Busenbark - April 19, 1938 - May 20, 2019

Departed: 05/20/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: JoAnn Busenbark, who lived a life of public service, died Monday at Queen of the Valley Medical Center after a battle with cardiovascular disease, her friends reported. She was 81.
She was a strong advocate for seniors, those with disabilities, veterans and those who are poor.
Busenbarks remarkable career included more than 30 years developing and administering programs and services for disabled students at Napa Valley College, nine years on the city of Napas Planning Commission, two terms as a Napa council member, and more recent advocacy for senior citizens.
She had served on the Napa-Solano Agency on Aging, the Napa County Para-transit Coordinating Council, the city of Napas Senior Center Advocacy Commission and the Napa County Commission on Aging.
"She was a champion for those of us who are underrepresented or perhaps forgotten," said Heather Stanton, a friend and fellow Commission on Aging member.
Dr. Ronald Kraft, superintendent/president of Napa Valley College, announced Busenbarks death in a letter sent Tuesday to the college community. "She was gentle and tough, kind and generous, and passionate with a capital P. JoAnn had a positive impact on Napa from the day she arrived here in 1967 until the very end, fighting for all issues related to the disabled population of the Napa Valley, as well as the elderly and the poor."
She served from 2004 to 2016 on the colleges Board of Trustees. After she chose not to run for re-election, she was granted Trustee Emerita status.
Busenbark was known for her bluntness, Stanton said. "Throughout her life, she said what she thought she needed to say, with no filters."
"She never thought she was in a popularity contest. She reminded me of the Frank Sinatra song, I do it my way," Stanton said.
Former Napa Mayor Ed Henderson remembers Busenbark as someone who took "strong positions" and "stood up to Harry Martin," who published the Napa Sentinel newspaper.
"Martin backed off. He had respect for her," Henderson said.
Napa Mayor Jill Techel called Busenbark a "mentor and role model." Busenbark was on the council in 1996 that appointed her to fill a vacancy, she recalled.
"She would make a motion I think just to get the conversation started, but never was positional about her motion and was willing to accept changes," Techel said.
During her time on the council, she advocated for economic development, defending the citys general plan and Rural Limit Line and encouraged the construction of workforce housing.
Busenbark served two terms on the City Council before her defeat in the March 2003 election.
"I admired that she stayed so active in the community and shared her experience on the College Board. If she saw a need she jumped in to help find solutions and her latest work on senior issues was a great example of this," Techel said.
Stanton said Busenbark was raised on a farm in Roseburg, Oregon with sisters. "Her father decided she was the boy. She grew up driving a tractor," she said.
She attended Oregon State University, where she played field hockey, and earned a bachelor of science degree. She first taught physical education and health at K-12 schools in Oregon, then was a teacher, coach and dean of girls for a school district in upstate New York. Afterward, she moved to Salem, Ore. and taught at Hillcrest School for Girls, a court school for juvenile delinquents, before moving to Napa.
Busenbark raised four "god-children": Falina, Peter, Daniel and Nathan, said Sandy Fagan, a friend.
She was cremated and her ashes were sent to Oregon, Stanton said. Her friends will be planning a memorial event. Funeral Home: Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel 2383 Napa-Vallejo Highway Napa, CA

Oswaldo Badilla - September 13, 1971 - April 22, 2019

Departed: 04/22/2019 (Napa)
Obituary Preview: Oswaldo "Baldo" Badilla, 47, of Napa, California, passed away at Kaiser Hospital on Monday, April 22, 2019 after a short battle with cancer.
Born September 13, 1971 in Mexicali, Baja, Mxico. He was son of the late Enrique Badilla and Raquel Badilla, of Napa. He immigrated to the United States where he attended Napa schools, graduating from Napa High School.
He married the love of his life, Marisa Gonzalez, on March 1, 1997.
Oswaldo is survived by his wife of 22 years, and his three sons, Oswaldo, Elias and Isaias.
He is also survived by his mom, Raquel Badilla, and his two sisters, Teresa Badilla and Ana LaVoy, both of Napa. Plus brothers Saul Carrillo, Enrique, Francisco, Jorge (deceased), Gerardo, Rafael, and Carlos Badilla.
Oswaldo was a long time resident of Napa, CA where he worked 25 years as a gas repair technician for PG&E in Napa. He and his wife, Marisa, enjoyed living and raising their children here in Napa, CA.
Oswaldo and Marisa frequently traveled to Mexico with their boys to see the sights and visit Marisas family in Jalisco. Often times, they would all drive to Mexicali to visit his brothers. Overall, Oswaldo enjoyed his travels, be it by plane, or by car, but most of all, he enjoyed the quality time spent with family and friends alike. One of his greatest joys was seeing everyone happy and enjoying themselves.
Oswaldo frequently talked about the Word of God and shared it with others, even people he did not know. Oswaldo knew what he was doing by following Gods orders and by preaching his gospel.
Whether it was bad or good, Oswaldo never questioned what happened in his life. He trusted Gods path and took his family along that path. Oswaldo was a man of God and his inner strength came from his faith and beliefs in Jesus Christ. He and his family regularly attended Casa de Oracion Church in San Francisco.
Oswaldos interest in sports consisted of football, soccer and basketball. He supported local professional teams like the 49ers and the Golden State Warriors but for soccer, he supported the Mexico national team. Oswaldo would participate in pick-up soccer games at Fuller Park when his family had birthday parties or barbecues. Oswaldo enjoyed spending his time off from work with his close family at home watching redbox movies and eating massive bowls of delicious popcorn that Marisa would make from scratch. Oswaldo was very open when it came to food. Being picky with food was something that did not exist within him because he showed his family that they had to value anything that was placed on their plate because God provided the proper and necessary foods. Not only did he value just food, he valued everything he had to the absolute fullest, he let nothing go to waste.
All who knew Oswaldo admired him dearly for his personal drive, his determination, his caring for others and his wonderful warm smile and sense of humor. If someone was in need, Oswaldo would be right there to help.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the Vallejo Kaiser Hospital for their wonderful care for Oswaldo during this most difficult time; the PG&E family which made Oswaldos day when they came to visit; and the members of Casa de Oracion Church from San Francisco who provided much need spiritual and personal support for Oswaldo, Marisa and the family.
A visitation service will be held in the chapel of Napa Valley Memorial Park (2383 Napa Vallejo Highway) Wednesday May 1, 2019, at 4:30 pm. The memorial service will be held there on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 11:00 am. Funeral Home: Treadway & Wigger Funeral Chapel 2383 Napa-Vallejo Highway Napa, CA
