Leslie Earl Porter - August 29, 1937 - April 23, 2024

Departed: 04/23/2024 (Boonville)
Obituary Preview: Remsen - Leslie Earl Porter died peacefully at the Masonic Home in Utica, New York on April 23, 2024. Les was born on August 29, 1937 to Alton Joel Porter and Ruby Pearl Leslie in Ogdensburg, NY.
A 1956 graduate of Ogdensburg Free Academy, Les served as senior class president, quarterback of the varsity football team and played basketball, competing throughout the “North Country.” He grew up near the Saint Lawrence River and loved fishing, ice fishing, duck hunting and boating. After graduating from high school, Les took a job with the New York Telephone Company where he advanced from climbing poles to senior management over his more than 30-year career. The job brought him to Oneida County where he made his home first in Rome, then in Grant, and finally and most fondly in “Remsen City, USA.” Remsen, is where he devoted much time and energy to serving the community, first joining the Remsen Volunteer Fire Department in 1968. He was a member of the Remsen Central School Board of Education for 15 years, serving as board president from 1974 until 1976. From 1982 until 1989 he served as Remsen Town Supervisor. In 2017 he ended a 26-year run as Oneida County Legislator representing District 6. There he chaired the Ways and Means Committee and maintained close ties to the towns and villages he served. A favorite expression was “people helping people.”
In the early 1970s Les helped bring national country music acts to the Remsen Firemen’s Field Days and later often served as Master of Ceremonies at the Boonville Fair. An auctioneer since his youth, he donated his services to several charity auctions annually. Les was a Mason and a member of the Twitchell Creek Hunting Club.
Penny, his beloved wife of 52 years was always by his side. They met while working for New York Tel and married in 1972 in Whitesboro, NY. Together they operated a part-time auctioneering business for decades. He was most proud of his seven children—three daughters with Penny and his four eldest with former wife, Patricia Boak (neé Mullady); 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Les loved Christmas and kept the model train on the tracks under the tree for many years. He pitched tents and later towed a camper through the Adirondacks and along
the Saint Lawrence Seaway. He pulled toboggan loads of kids behind his “vintage” snowmobiles and hitched up his horse, Fire, for winter sleigh rides. He put a lot of worms on a lot of hooks for a lot of kids and grandkids and, occasionally, caught one himself. He hunted and fished and kept his boat running, his pack basket ready and a roll of black electrical tape handy. Les enjoyed a tall tale, a good laugh and a beer—or two.
In the late 70s Les’s work for the phone company took him to Lake Placid, NY to coordinate communication systems for the 1980 Winter Olympics. Twenty-five years later he was back in Lake Placid to watch his granddaughter, Erin Hamlin win a World Championship in Luge on her way to four consecutive winter Olympics. He had much to be proud of.
Les was predeceased by his parents, Alton and Ruby, his sister Geraldine and brother, Gerald and a sister Jean who died in childhood.
Leslie—“Les” “Lester” “Porter” “Dad” “Grampy”—leaves behind many to cherish their memories of him—his wife, Penny (née Shirley); children, Colleen (Bill) Kiefer, Eilleen (Ron) Hamlin, Scott (Christine) Porter, Doug (Suzanne) Porter, Amy (Scott) Jones, Becky (Dave) Ozog, Cortney (Shannon) Meeker; grandchildren, Patrick (Elenni) Kiefer, Hannah (John) Harwood, Ryan Hamlin, Erin (Jon) Hamlin Hodge, Sean (Ashley) Hamlin, Quinn and Elise Porter, Jessica, Jared (Delores) and Jake Porter, Adam and Andrew Jones, Matthew and Michael (Erin) Sypolt, Kade Ozog, Regan, Joshua and Luke Meeker, seven great grandchildren and three nephews. Departed: 03/11/2024 (Boonville)
Obituary Preview: Constableville, New York...Beverly Jean Kohler, 84, a lifetime resident of the Lewis County area, left us to be with Jesus at 7:04 a.m. on Monday March 11th, 2024, peacefully going to heaven at one of her homes on Edgewood Drive, Lyons Falls NY.
Beverly was born June 25th, 1939, daughter of the late Adeline Tuttle and Edward Kohler. She was the loving mother of 7 children, 4 sons & 3 daughters from her marriage to Duane C. Stanford Sr., which ended in divorce in 1991.
Beverly worked for many years for the ARC of Lewis County and retiring in 2004 as transportation coordinator.
Our mother taught us many things as young kids that are still with us today:” good manners, respect and sound moral values. These values have made us who we are, and we thank her very much. As proud as mom was of us, she always liked to leave room for us to make her a little prouder, which was her way of pushing us to achieve. Our lasting memories of Mama are simple: a hard-working, passionate figure of strength who never wavered in her support or love of her family, and who soldiered on even when times were tough.
Beverly inspired all who knew and loved her by the strength and perseverance that she maintained during bouts of cancer and many major surgeries in her later years.
She is survived by a son Duane Stanford Jr & Michelle Baker, Port Leyden NY, a daughter Susan Houppert & son in law Greg Houppert, Black River NY, a son Thomas Stanford and daughter in law, Tina Stanford, Lyons Falls NY, a daughter Dawn Widrick, Adams NY, a son Eugene Stanford, Port Leyden NY, a son Michael Stanford and daughter in law Kristin Stanford, Port Leyden NY and a daughter Melody Stanford and Jay Thoden, Port Leyden NY, as well as 19 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
Beverly has quoted that: "Leaving behind, while she awaits him at heaven's gate, with much love, is the love of her life, Leonard Charles Wilder" of Constableville, NY. Leonard, born May 16, 1945, was originally from Jonesville, Va. Beverly and Leonard have been blessed to be together since May 1986.
Survived by Beverly is 1 brother, William Tuttle and 2 sisters Marjorie Hancock & Iva Hellinger. Predeceasing Beverly were 5 brothers, Ed Kohler, Bob Kohler, Roy Kohler, Richard Tuttle, Charles (Cork) Tuttle, Beatrice (Bea) Price Kenealy, Chester Price and Kenneth Price. Beverly will be greatly missed by many as she awaits the arrival of all her loved ones in heaven. In writing this eulogy for our Mama, our hearts remember all she has taught us and the times she stood by us when we needed her. We are inspired by the strength and strong will she has always shown all of her children, and pray that we can use that, not only in our lives, but that we can also instill it into our children's lives as our Mama did in our lives. Thank you, Mama!
God Bless You in heaven our beloved Mama, Life Partner, Grandma, Sister, & Friend. One day we will all meet again beyond the Golden Gates of Glory.
In keeping with Beverley’s wishes, her family will gather at a later date for a celebration of life luncheon. There will be no calling hours. Cremation will take place, with a private interment of her cremains in Wildwood Cemetery, Lyons Falls. Her arrangements are entrusted to Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
