Obituary Preview: Barbara Ann “Kush” Kushubar, Age 70, of Keeling, Virginia, passed away on March 30, 2024 surrounded by family and friends. She was born Aug. 13, 1953 in Stamford Conn. to the late John Kushubar Jr. and Anna Parahus Kushubar. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother John J. Kushubar.
She taught at Averett University for 36 years and was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, coach, teacher and loyal friend.
It has been said that the “two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” For Kush her “whys” were being a teacher, a mentor and being the most kind and generous friend a person could hope to have. Her list of accolades is long, but she was the proudest of her students. For more than 36 years she taught, coached, encouraged and, when necessary, pushed generations of young people who are now out making a positive difference in this world. There is no greater legacy of love to leave behind.
Whether you knew her as Kush, Barb, Golfing Buddy, Coach K or Professor Kushubar, you knew that she cared. Her wish would be that we all continue to care for each other and to bring light and joy into every corner of this world.
Left to cherish her memory are her life partner for 31 years Susan Huckstep of Keeling; sister in law Jeanne Kushubar of Williamsburg; Keith and Beth Huckstep of Scottsville, Va.; her nieces Kadee Tate and her partner Adam of Scottsville and Allison Hoover and her husband Rowdy of Woodstock, Va.; great nieces and nephews: Ruby, Colton, Huck, Kennedy and Mack; and a long list of friends who became family.
There will be a celebration of her life Sunday, April 7 at 2:00 PM at Averett University’s North Campus (707 Mt. Cross Rd.). The family will be available to greet you prior to the service.
