Departed: 04/14/2024 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Bob focused much of his life on helping others. This manifested itself with a charitable event organized by Bob and friends, celebrated annually, for the past 46 years, the June Jam. In 1978, 3 friends were electrocuted in an accident where 1 died. Bob and friends rallied to help the survivors by holding an outdoor concert. The next year they helped a family who lost everything in a fire. From these events, the annual music festival was born and became one of his greatest passions. Over the last 47 years, he led a throng of hundreds of volunteers, booking artists from across the country, setting up the venue and attending to the myriad of details to bring about such a large event. The funds raised have been donated to individuals and charities all over Delmarva. Veterans, children, cancer victims, and the homeless are just a few of those helped. Bob and June Jam played a large part in opening the “Home of the Brave” in Milford for homeless veterans and “Peachtree Acres”, a Brain Injury facility in Harbeson. Bob loved to help others and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the musicians and artists, befriending many. This musical event also produced many special moments in Bob’s life such as when singer Donnie Van Zant finished performing at the annual event, pulled Bob aside and said, “you folks may not realize it, but you have your own little slice of heaven right here”. He wanted to create that for everyone and help as many people along the way as he could.
Bob is survived by his long-time partner Brenda Carter, his niece who he loved like a daughter, Katheryn Hartley, and his 4 siblings: Mary (Tom) Stenson, Tom (Marci) Hartley, Liz (Bo) Dunn and Ann (Ken) Baker. He also very much adored his nieces Cameron Hartley, Cassidy Baker, Brittany Baker, Kaitlin Stenson, Brittany Kelly, and Holly Dunn and his nephews, Wilson Hartley, TJ Hartley, Christopher Stenson, and Chris Dunn, great nieces Kaleigh Kelly, Emma and Kate Nicholson and great nephew Colin Kelly. He also had a wealth of cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends, all of whom he was very fond of, and who will all miss him dearly.

Frances Theresa Waxman - December 24, 1940 - March 26, 2024

Departed: 03/26/2024 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: Frances ‘Franny’ Theresa Waxman (née Gagliardi), 83, of Dover, DE, went home to be with Jesus on March 26, 2024. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family.
Franny was born in Philadelphia, PA on December 24, 1940 to Attilio and Carmella ‘Mildred’ Gagliardi. She grew up in Philadelphia and attended John Bartram High School where she was a member of the Memorial Color Guard. She was known to be a stylish dresser and an amazing dancer. As a young person, she spent her weekends at the Jersey Shore. She was also a USO Hostess and would speak with great enthusiasm of her days going to various events with her sister, Marie.
Franny married John Maddy in 1962 and had three children, Theresa, John and Karen. She was a loving and gentle mother who taught her children how to be compassionate and to always think of others first. She instilled strong values and morals in her children and lived her life with grace and dignity.
Later settling in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Franny met and married Joseph Waxman. There they blended their two families together and made it a priority to spend time with their children and grandchildren. She and Joe would famously dance the jitterbug and draw onlookers because of how good they were. She loved to dance and would do so every time she heard music – and would dance with anyone who was willing. She was amazing at the craft and even had a stint on American Bandstand.
Franny worked for many years as a manager of a bridal salon. She took great pride in her work and helped many brides prepare for their special day. Franny also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and donated her time to various charities and organizations. She always opened her home and offered people a meal and a place to sleep. She was an extremely gracious person.
She never missed a birthday for any of her loved ones. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and hosted many family dinners, Easter egg hunts and birthday parties.
Christmas was always a very special time for Franny. It gave her a reason to dote on her family but it was also a time for her family to dote on her since her birthday was on Christmas Eve. Her birthdays were always celebrated with an Italian-style dinner at Olive Garden, followed by gifts, joy and laughter. She was incredibly deserving of her ‘double-treat’ on Christmas Eve.
After the passing of her husband Joe, Franny moved to Dover, Delaware where she spent the remaining years of her life. She met many new friends and was surrounded by people who loved her and enjoyed her company as much as she enjoyed theirs.
Those who knew Franny remember her as being a very vivacious woman. Her faith in God was very important to her and she would religiously pray to her favorite Saint, Saint Anthony. She was compassionate, kind, quick-witted and always had a smile for everyone. Franny had a special place in her heart for babies and puppies.
Despite her battle with dementia and other medical issues, Franny still smiled, gave hugs and kisses and made everyone she met laugh. She was an incredibly strong woman who continued to rally despite the obstacles she faced. She had a heart of gold and there are no words that could be penned here to describe how much she meant to those in her life.
She is survived by her children Theresa Bennett (Bob), John Maddy (Heather), Karen Maddy, Susan Callahan (Hershel) and Paul Waxman (Kim).
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Attilio and Carmella Gagliardi, her sisters Antoinette ‘Toni’ Bruce, Marie Krupinski and brother Carmen Gagliardi.
Other surviving family members include grandchildren Amanda Hescock (Jason), Nicolas Ganley (Ashley), Madeline Bennett, Dylan Bennett, Joseph Callahan (Tiffany), Carissa Callahan, Vincent Waxman (Jessica), Collin Campbell, Mackenzie Campbell, Mason Campbell (Alex) and great-grandchildren Juliana Byrd, Mia Waxman, Declan Callahan and Jackson Callahan – as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors who loved her dearly.
She will be missed by the many lives she touched throughout her time on earth. The family would like to sincerely thank the Nurses and Aides of Delaware Hospice as well as the entire staff at Brookdale Senior Living Facility.
Funeral services will be held at 11AM, Friday, April 5, 2024 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. A viewing will be held one hour prior. Interment will be in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.

Barbara Lenox Miller - November 10, 1928 - February 10, 2024

Departed: 02/10/2024 (Dover)
Obituary Preview: BARBARA LENOX MILLER (11/10/1928-02/10/24)
The world lost a phenomenal woman and trailblazer on February 10, 2024.
Barbara Lenox Miller was a writer of romances and mysteries, a journalist, and the first female lawyer in private practice in Kent County.
She was born in Trenton, NJ, November 10, 1928, to Samuel David Lenox and Violet Wagner Lenox. Barbara was the youngest of three children.
She attended schools in Trenton. Then, inspired by her mother, Barbara took up the trailblazing mantle and attended Bucknell University, where she first met her future husband.
After college she worked in New York City for a women’s magazine. One day, while walking in Greenwich Village, she ran into her college chum, James E. Miller, and they reacquainted. They were married in 1952. During her young married life, she wrote romance and mystery stories. She also worked undercover as Della in “Dial Della” for the Delaware State News, while her husband Jim wrote “Grist from the Miller.”
In the 1970s, Barbara decided to go to law school, following the family tradition of lawyering: her father, the prominent and very honorable Trenton lawyer Samuel D. Lenox, and her brother, NJ Superior Court Justice Samuel D. Lenox, Jr. Barbara was astounded at how many people, women especially, who said “Who do you think you are? Women can’t be lawyers”. She graduated Delaware Law School and was the 40th woman admitted to the Delaware Bar. Barbara petitioned the Supreme Court to use her tenure as a Magistrate in the Justice of the Peace court for her clerkship, because the firms would not accept her. When law firms would not accept her without a clerkship on her curriculum vitae, Barbara found work as a magistrate in the Justice of the Peace court – and petitioned the Delaware Supreme Court to use her tenure there as said clerkship.
While a magistrate, Judge Miller instituted that probable cause was a requirement for warrants. She was unpopular with the police because of it.
Later Judge Miller ruled that “No Parking” signs were in one direction forward, not both ways unless specifically stated. Barbara said that her job in JP was the best job she ever had. One never knew whom or what would walk through the door.
Barbara joined the Brown, Sheils, and Chasanov law firm, where she worked directly for Herman Brown. Former Governor David P. Buckson called her “a crackerjack lawyer” for her work in Family Court when he presided as judge there. Barbara retired from law to care for her mother and pursue her antiques business, “The Miller’s Wife.”
Barbara lived 70 years in Huntly Circle (please note: no ”e” per the original deeds) before moving to Harmony at Kent. She loved the spring in Huntly, when the exquisite landscaping she had developed over those 70 years. Many people stopped to compliment her on her beautiful gardens. Those gardens kept her vibrant as she worked them until she moved to Harmony.
Barbara loved to reminisce about old Dover before stoplights, which she abhorred. One of her favorite places was Spence’s Auction on Tuesdays and Fridays. At Spence’s, she made many friends. Jack Jacobs is a cherished friend.
She loved to get a bargain even more than getting something for free. A child of the depression, she was very frugal. Barbara was very active, caring for her one-acre homestead by herself and exercising. She enjoyed the time spent with her friend Carol Hastings on archeological digs.
Barbara is predeceased by her parents, her brother, her sister, internationally renowned playwright Jean Lenox Toddie, and her niece Virginia Ann (Annie) Toddie. Barbara lamented the loss of her two sons: Poet Richard Luther Miller and journalist and editor James Lenox (JL) Miller both deceased on February 25 of different years. She is also predeceased by her adventure pal, Orna Lee Massey.
Barbara Lenox Miller is survived by her niece Barbara (Barbie) Toddie Geraghty and her husband Joe, of West Chester, PA, both of whom Barbara treasured. She is survived by her sister-in-law Jacqueline Lenox and niece Linda Fair Lenox of East Amwell, NJ. Her daughter in-law and caregiver, Lyn B. Arnold of Wyoming, DE, widow of JL Miller survives her. In addition, an extended family of grandnephews and their children will remember her as “neat,” and “feisty.” Barbara also leaves behind dear friends from her exercise classes and Lunch Bunch, as well as from her days in the antiques business.
