Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure for loved ones.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also mention any notable accomplishments, military service, or charitable organizations they were involved with.

Who writes an obituary?

In most cases, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. Funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist in crafting the notice. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide accurate and meaningful information.

How long does it take to write an obituary?

The time it takes to write an obituary varies depending on the complexity and length of the notice. On average, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to gather information and craft a well-written obituary.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos to accompany the obituary. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the notice and share memories of the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an already published obituary, contact the original publisher or online platform where it was posted. They may have specific procedures for making changes.

How long does an obituary stay online?

The duration an obituary remains online varies depending on the platform or website where it was published. Some websites may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to reflect on their life and leave a lasting message for loved ones. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What is an online obituary guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and sign their name in tribute to the deceased. This provides a digital space for people to express their sympathy and support.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in storing historical records. You may also contact local libraries or genealogical societies for assistance in finding older obituaries.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share an obituary with a wider audience. You can also create a memorial page or group to collect condolences and memories.

What is the purpose of an obituary headline?

The headline serves as a title for the obituary and should accurately reflect the content of the notice. It's usually a brief phrase that includes the person's name and may highlight their profession, achievement, or personality trait.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you notice mistakes in an already published obituary, contact the publisher or online platform immediately. They will work with you to correct the errors and republish the revised notice.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes! Incorporating meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add depth and personality to an obituary. Choose something that resonates with the deceased's spirit or reflects their values.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary can serve as a catalyst for grief by providing a sense of closure and allowing loved ones to begin processing their emotions. It also gives friends and acquaintances an opportunity to offer condolences and support.

How do I decide what details to include in an obituary?

Focusing on the person's personality, accomplishments, and relationships can help guide your writing. Consider what made them unique and what they would want others to remember about them.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations or memorial funds in lieu of flowers. This allows mourners to make a meaningful contribution in honor of their loved one.

What is the significance of publishing an obituary in multiple places?

Publishing an obituary in multiple locations (e.g., local newspaper, online platform, funeral home website) increases its visibility and ensures that more people are notified of the passing.

Can I create a video obituary?

Yes! Video tributes are becoming increasingly popular as a way to celebrate someone's life through images, music, and storytelling. You can create your own video or work with a professional service.

How do I preserve an online obituary for future generations?

You can save a copy of the online obituary as a PDF or screenshot, or print it out for physical storage. Additionally, consider creating a digital archive or scrapbook with other mementos from your loved one's life.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to emotional distress?

If you're finding it difficult to write an obituary due to grief or emotional overwhelm, consider enlisting the help of a trusted friend or family member. You can also reach out to a professional writer or counselor for guidance and support.

Can I update an existing obituary with new information?

In some cases, yes. If you need to add new details or corrections to an already published obituary, contact the original publisher or online platform where it was posted. They will advise on their update policies.
