Richard A. DiCapua - May 05, 1936 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Danielson)
Obituary Preview: Richard A. DiCapua, aged 87, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 24, 2024. He leaves behind his beautiful wife of 41 years, Kathleen Brainerd, and his adoring children, Nancy Walsh, Norine and husband Michael Durkin, Karen and husband Clay Farnsworth, Kenneth DiCapua, and his bonus children Kelly Peasley and Kent Madden, who helped create his much loved blended family. Nothing made Dick prouder than being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will never be forgotten by his grandchildren Gavin and wife Andrea Walsh, Evan Walsh, Emily, Chris and Jaclyn Durkin, Olivia, Chris and Connor Peasley, and Justin Madden and wife Chloe, along with great grandchildren Noelle, Lucas, Carter and Freyja. He was predeceased by his parents Helen and Anthony DiCapua, his beloved son Richard W. DiCapua, and his sons-in-law Keith Walsh and Robert Peasley.
Dick proudly served as a Professor of Immunology, in the School of Pharmacy, at the University of Connecticut for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He got his pilot’s license and eventually became a Certified Flight Instructor, helping dozens of students fulfill their dreams of piloting an aircraft.
To Dick’s family he was the jack of all trades! His many skills included building additions, home renovations, and fixing cars… if you needed help, you called Grandpa! Lesser known interests of Dick’s included art and music. His children fondly remember him playing the piano as they danced around the room, and singing loudly, with his five children joining in, as he drove cross country in their Volkswagen Camper Bus. He was in his glory at any outside concert, and talked fondly of his opportunity to see James Taylor and Carly Simon’s last concert together on Martha’s Vineyard. His love of sports crossed many fields including being a Super Fan of UConn Basketball, The New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox. He coached his kids in both soccer and baseball, and was always in the stands for early morning swim meets. Later in life nothing made him prouder than watching his grandkids excel at whichever activity they enjoyed. Whether it was chorus, plays, or sports, his presence was felt as he cheered them all on. His adventurous nature drove his love of travel, as he and Kathy visited many countries. He loved learning and trying new things, such as cooking classes in Italy, or the infamous zip line ride he took in Costa Rica when he was already in his 80’s. Dick loved to be near the water, whether boating, fishing, or clamming, he was in his element, so it was no surprise that after living in Mansfield, Dick and Kathy chose to live on Martha’s Vineyard, in Naples and Boca Grande, Florida, and on Lake Bungee in Woodstock, CT, where for many years he honorably piloted the lead vessel at the annual July 4, boat parade, with his joyous, raucous family members in tow.
His optimism, zest for life, and love for his family will resonate in the hearts of those who will love him forever and ever.
Dick’s family and friends will gather in his honor, at the Tillinghast Funeral Home, 433 Main St, Danielson, CT, on Thursday, March 28, 2024. His family will receive visitors starting at 11AM followed by a remembrance service at noon.
