Obituary Preview: Dennis Richard Dickinson, 69, passed away at home in Sterling, CT after a hard fought fight with COPD. Born in Providence, RI he was the only son of the late Richard and Flora Dickinson, (formerly of Lincoln, RI).
Dennis was the beloved husband of thirty-eight years to Rebecca (Larson) Dickinson, may they rest in eternal peace and love together. Many of their years were spent raising their family in the home he built for them by hand.
Dennis was a devoted and loving father to all three of his children and their spouses; first-born son Scott Dickinson from a previous marriage, and his wife Wendy (Field) Dickinson of Lincoln, RI; Richard Dickinson and wife Nina (Smith) Dickinson of Mystic, CT; and daughter Magalie (Dickinson) Porretto and husband Thomas of York Town Heights, NY.
He was a proud grandfather to Lindsey Dickinson, Dominick and Genevieve Porretto, and was excited to hear he was going to be a grandfather again, with a fourth grandchild due in January.
Both of Dennis’ parents had been orphaned at an early age and lived through the Great Depression. They taught him wonderful survival skills and a strong work ethic that served him well throughout life, and that he ensured he passed along to his children.
Dennis was drafted during Vietnam but decided to join the Army on his own accord, serving as an off- road training and tactics specialist before finishing out his time in the reserves. He followed his passion for working on cars and transitioned to becoming a mechanic, with the skills of a real-life MacGyver, able to fix anything. His passion for automobiles helped him launch a business which organized and ran truck pulls and mud bogging shows all over New England. This passion became a family past time for many years.
An avid outdoorsman, Dennis loved to hunt and fish and share his catch via mystery meals. Both land and sea brought a smile to Dennis’ face. As a social butterfly, he made fast friends with everyone he met and was always there to lend a hand. He also loved to share his vast knowledge and was not afraid to put anyone to work when he needed help getting something done. Dennis leaves behind many cherished neighbors and friends and will forever be missed by anyone that has met him.
