Chad L. Henderson - November 06, 1971 - May 21, 2024

Departed: 05/21/2024 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Chad L. Henderson, age 52, of Prairie du Chien, WI, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. He was born the son of Larry and Sharlene (Sanborn) Henderson on November 6, 1971 in Burlington, WI. Chad lost his dad at a young age and underwent many struggles throughout his life, which he overcame in his own way. He enjoyed living simply and took pleasure in little things such as playing cards and Oscar Mayer Bologna. Much of Chad’s time revolved around his vehicles, especially his Ford trucks. Whether it was going on a drive with his son, Aaron, to talk as men or just sitting in his parked truck listening to music, Chad always gravitated to trucks. Monster trucks held a special place in his heart, with his favorite being Grave Digger, and Chad was excited beyond words to meet Dennis Anderson on a family trip for his 40th birthday. Although he was a dignified person, Chad never let his pride get in the way of thinking of others first or helping anyone in need; he lived a humble life of good humor and was always grateful.
Chad is survived by his son, Aaron (Michaela Bergmann) Henderson; his mother, Sharlene Henderson; sister, Julie (Richard Carvalho) Henderson-Carvalho; many relatives; and his partner, Wanda Scott.
Chad was preceded in death by his father, Larry Henderson.
A service celebrating Chad’s life will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Freeman Lutheran Church, rural Ferryville. Private family burial will be in the Liberty Pole Cemetery, rural Viroqua. Visitation will be on Saturday, June 29, 2024 from 10: a.m. until the time of service at the church. Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua is entrusted with his services.

Chris H. Hendrickson - June 27, 1951 - May 02, 2024

Departed: 05/02/2024 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Chris Henry Hendrickson was loved by many and will be missed by even more. Countless hearts were broken and forever changed when he left this earth. Chris was born June 27, 1951, and died in his sleep on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Chris had an adventurous spirit playing the hand he was dealt with little stopping him. A kind man whose smile and warmth lit up the room, he seldom had a cross word to say of anyone.
Chris grew up in Viroqua, Wisconsin, the heart of God’s country. He was active in sports to stay fit for his real passion, ski jumping. Starting at age 10, Chris could be found at the local ski jump in Viroqua. Chris pursued the sport and competed in junior nordic jumping championship tournaments throughout the Midwest. On January 7, 1968, Chris sustained a tragic jumping accident leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. After many months in rehab in Rochester, Minnesota, Chris was able to go home and returned to Viroqua High School for his senior year graduating with his class in 1969.
Chris ventured far from home to attend the University of Missouri. He made many lifetime friends in college. With a degree in political science, he returned to Viroqua and the area he loved. His early jobs included working at a nursing home and spinning records at the local radio station. Chris became the Vernon County Unified Board Director in 1976. It was here that Chris’ passion for advocating for people with fewer resources and various challenges blossomed. In his early days as a new Unified Board Director, Fred Hebert was his mentor and became a life-long friend.
Chris moved to Madison in the early 80s and held various positions within state government. As the Director of Community Mental Health in Wisconsin, Chris worked tirelessly to build the mental health consumer movement. He was fervent on involving people with mental health issues in designing the service system. The countless policy planning meetings included people with mental illness sitting side by side with state bureaucrats along with parents with children experiencing mental health challenges. Chris also influenced national policy serving as the elected Midwest representative with the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors.
Chris was passionate about social justice and was a staunch liberal. Rachel Madow and Thom Hartmann were his heroes. Regardless of someone’s political leanings, Chris was able to connect with everyone. Chris ran for Vernon County Clerk and found delight in canvassing the neighborhoods in the community.
As a kid, Chris spent countless hours on the Mississippi River. Several Viroqua families, fondly called the Leaky Fleet, spent weekends picnicking, fishing, and boating. The family cabin in Ferryville hosted many catfish fries and political fundraisers. Chris and his long-term partner, Therese, bought the family cabin in 2008. They said goodbye to the old cabin (if only those walls could talk) and built a new home, moving to Ferryville full-time in 2015. Chris quickly contributed to the community and served as the treasurer of the Ferryville Vision and Promotion Board for five years. He also was an active volunteer for Friends of Pool 9. He will be missed by the Taco Tuesday crowd at the Swing and the Lansing River Rats who were more than happy to go out on a boat ride. Chris was always a survivor finding sobriety in 1993. He resonated with the AA values of recovery, unity, and service. He practiced acceptance, gratitude, and forgiveness. The Monona Serenity House was a place of refuge. The support of the Saturday meetings was priceless. Special thanks to George, a stable force in Chris’ life offering hope, guidance, and love over the years
Chris was raised by Henry (Hank) and Elaine, who preceded him in death. Chris is survived by his sister Karla Fuller (Dan) of Appleton, brother John Hendrickson (Marisa) of Mequon, and Mary Loeffler of Sun Prairie. Nieces and nephews include Erin Gleason (Chris) and their children Emma and Miles, Andrea Fuller (Nate) and their children Iska and Odin, David Fuller (Ashley) and their children Bentley, Stella and Charlie, Jack Hendrickson (Marjani), and their children Zora and Zadie, Kate (Brimm) and their children Jane and WiIl, and Pete Hendrickson (Jenna) and their children Ben and Ellie, Noah Hendrickson, Isabela Keller Hendrickson, Tessa Loeffler (Jared) and Colin Loeffler.
Ron Garrett is also left with a hole in his heart. Chris referred to Ron as “the man” and the two shared many Culver’s lunches and trips to La Crosse. Also left with great sadness is Therese, his partner for over 20 years who is grateful for the time they spent together. The two traveled the United States and loved the beaches in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Great pleasure was enjoyed staying at home, playing cards, sitting by the fire pit, and watching the River go south.

Special thanks to everyone at Bethel Oaks and St. Croix Hospice for their special care. I AM ALWAYS WITH YOU
To those I love and those who love me.
When I am gone, release me, let me go.
I have so many things to see and do.
You mustn't tie yourself to me with tears.
Be thankful for our many beautiful years. I gave to you my love, you can only guess,
How much you gave to me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown,
But now it's time I travel on alone. So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It's only for a time that we must part.
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won't be far away, call and I will come. Though you can't see or touch me, I'll be near,
And if you listen with your heart, you'll hear.
All my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone, I'll greet you with a smile, and "Welcome home."

Sharon Kaye Yttri - August 03, 1951 - February 11, 2024

Departed: 02/11/2024 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Sharon Kaye (Johnson) Yttri, age 72, of Retreat (De Soto), WI, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2024, following a lifetime of sharing love and kindness. As a strong believer in the Golden Rule, Sharon’s compassion for others was inspiring as she lived her life believing the best way to make good friends was by being one. She was born on August 3, 1951 the daughter of Henry and Mildred “Jerry” (Hammond) Johnson. As a child, there wasn’t really a time when Sharon didn’t know Jerry W. Yttri; they met when she was three months old and grew up together. When they were little, Jerry said he was going to marry Sharon and they fulfilled that promise at their wedding on October 23, 1971. Her family was a constant source of joy in her life, and throughout their years together, Sharon and Jerry raised a family and spent many a happy time in their band, The Tailfeathers, with other family members, where she sang and played guitar. Sharon lived in several places throughout her life, but always called the De Soto area home. Over the years she often said, you’re never fully dressed without a smile, and it was Sharon’s positive attitude that helped her face life’s trials and tribulations with graceful patience. She was quick to count her blessings and determined to make her smile an umbrella in whatever storm came her way. As she told people, if it weren’t for the rain in our lives we wouldn’t appreciate the sunshine, and every now and then there’s a rainbow. Sharon was passionate about helping people and followed the JOY rule: “Jesus first, others second, yourself last.” Whether it was volunteering, attending rummage sales, thrift shopping, or bringing music to nursing homes, Sharon devoted herself to the service of others as a way to pay it forward for the blessings she enjoyed. Sharon helped others whenever she could, living a life of purpose and always trying to do right. She taught her family, and those like family, to be honest and dependable by saying “your word is your honor – if you can’t keep your word, tell a person why by calling or writing them.” One of those greatest blessings of her life was her family, and she never missed a chance to tell them, “I’ve loved you all of your days: all of your yesterdays, todays, and tomorrows.” Blessed be her memory.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jerry W. Yttri; three children: Valynne (Mike Liek) Yttri, Kiley Yttri, and Jayson Yttri; nine grandchildren: Ben, Jakob, Emma, Noah, Elijah, Chandler, Juniper, Alder, and Brianna; three cherished great-grandchildren: Avion, Bentley, and Stevie Jane; four siblings: Bob Johnson, Rick (Kay) Johnson, Bill (Vicky) Johnson, and Valerie Springborn; and many nieces, nephews, and friends who were like family to her.
In addition to her parents, Sharon was preceded in death by her siblings: Laurel Diane (Johnson) Coleman, Eloda Marie (Johnson) Frisby, and Thomas James Johnson; a brother-in-law, Roger Springborn Sr.; a niece, Sandy Coleman; and a great-niece, Amanda Hickok.
In keeping with her wishes, there will not be any formal funeral services at this time. A celebration of Sharon’s life will be at a future date. Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua is entrusted with her care.

Geraldine A. Buchanan - June 05, 1929 - January 30, 2024

Departed: 01/30/2024 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Geraldine Audrey Buchanan, age 94, of Westminster, CA, formerly of Viroqua, WI, passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2024.
In loving memory, we honor our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Geraldine “Gerry” Audrey (Fredrick) Buchanan, as she now rests in eternal peace with our father and grandfather, Gordon Buchanan.
Geraldine was born in La Crosse, WI on June 5, 1929, to Louis and Alma (Schoennagle) Fredrick. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Chaseburg, WI. The family farmed in the Chaseburg and Avalanche areas before settling in Viroqua, WI. She graduated from Viroqua High School in 1946. She married Gordon Buchanan in 1951 in Viroqua, and they later moved to California in 1953. Gordon passed away in 1999.
Geraldine was forever grateful to her parents for their excellent guidance, learning how to be resourceful, hardworking, and humble while finding humor in everyday life. She believed she learned everything there is to know about life from them and from growing up on the farm. She witnessed the virtue of unconditional love from her parents Louis and Alma and adopted it as her legacy to her own family.
As parents, Gerry and Gordy worked diligently to instill lifelong values in their four children. Even though Gerry held several bookkeeping, finance and administrative positions at businesses, schools and churches while raising her family, she managed to wash and iron forty-seven button-down dress shirts each week for her husband and three sons and made many dresses for her daughter. It was important to her that they look “respectable” at work and school every day.
She served on the Board of Finance at her church. She was also an integral part of a group who helped to establish the Orange Lutheran High School.
Hosting family gatherings – planned or impromptu - were as important to Gerry as keeping family traditions. She could whip up a meal on short notice or prepare a bedroom for guests with a smile. She maintained and prepared favorite family recipes from all sides of the family. One of her favorite traditions was attending the annual Scottish Festival in Orange County, CA, as one way to honor the Buchanan heritage.
Gerry and Gordy often made the cross-country trip from CA to WI to stay connected with friends and relatives, and to attend class reunions in Viroqua. They often took their family camping to explore areas in California. In later years, they traveled to many locations with Gordy’s choir, to Elder Hostels, and to visit friends and family, along the West Coast and to Hawaii. Gordy passed away in 1999, and Gerry remained in the family home in Westminster. He lived on vividly in her heart and mind for all the years after he had passed.
Staying connected with family and friends was especially important to Gerry. Living her mantra “Blest be the Tie that Binds,” she is fondly remembered for sending thoughtful letters, cards, and care packages filled with love and encouragement to inspire her extended family and friends.
Often saying that she was “good at patching up things that were torn apart”, sewing and quilting was a life-long hobby and labor of love for Gerry. She made thousands of baby quilts for Project Linus, a non-profit organization providing new handmade blankets to children in need. In addition, she made many “Quilts of Valor” to honor those who served in the military. Some quilts took over three months to make. Well-read, feisty, opinionated yet non-judgmental, the life of the party, kind, compassionate, funny, and humble are just a few ways to describe Gerry. A quote she often used to express the value of keeping an open mind about the views of others: “Whenever two people share the same opinion, one of them is unnecessary.”
She also lived by an expression shared by her father Louis Fredrick: “Plant your feet (firmly on the ground).” Meaning, become resolute and reject intimidation.
Despite some physical health challenges, Gerry maintained her mental acuity to the very end. She believed that living in the “perfect climate,” staying rooted in her faith, and “not sweating the small stuff” all contributed to her longevity.
We are all better people having known and loved her. Blessed be her memory.
Geraldine is survived by her four children: Paul (Robin) Buchanan of Claremont, CA; Gregg (Rebecca) Buchanan of Brooklyn, NY; Jon (Simone) Buchanan of Long Beach, CA; and Mary Sue Horton of Tehachapi, CA. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Andy Buchanan, Christina Buchanan, Peter Buchanan, Ruth Gerges, Henry Buchanan, Rose Buchanan, Susan Lokey, Jon Horton, and Jennifer Buchanan. She is further survived by five great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom she loved and adored.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gordon, her parents, her sister Lucine Grafft, and other relatives, including her beloved cousin Eddie Gene Fredrick.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at Reformation Lutheran Church in Westminster, CA. Friends and family may also gather at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua, WI. Rev. Charles W. "Chuck" Miller - March 13, 1954 - January 16, 2024

Departed: 01/16/2024 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Rev. Charles ‘Chuck’ William Miller, age 69, of La Crosse, WI, passed away at home on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Ever the proud father, it was Chuck’s wish that his beloved daughters write his obituary. Our Dad, Charles William Miller, aka Chuck, was born on March 13, 1954, in Wausau, WI, to Lyle and Esther (Grosskopf) Miller. He was the youngest of four children, and Dad’s three sisters had their work cut out for them, keeping their baby brother in line. Dad graduated from Wausau West High School in 1972 and attended UW-La Crosse, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in education to become a history teacher. During that time, Dad became active in the Lutheran Campus Ministry, felt the fire of the gospel in his soul, and heard his call to ministry. After graduating from UW-La Crosse in 1977, as a promise to his father, our Dad postponed starting seminary. History teaching jobs weren’t in great demand, so our father took a chaplain position at Bethany Lutheran Nursing Home in La Crosse, WI, where he met an angel in a nursing uniform named April Kay Rasmussen. He eventually won her over, and they were married on September 6, 1980. Dad attended Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, IA, and was ordained a minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in the summer of 1983. As their adventure in ministry started, they welcomed Alysha Marie into this world, and our Dad accepted his first call at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Winterset, IA. Then, in 1985, the couple added another daughter, Bethany Nicole, to their family. In 1988, Dad accepted a call at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Postville, IA, and they completed their family with the birth of Chelsea Anne. In January 1996, the Miller family moved to Fennimore, WI, to be part of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Our Dad’s last pastoral call was at Kickapoo United Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove, WI, and Peace Lutheran Church in Readstown, WI. Our parents chose La Crosse, WI, to start their retirement in June 2022.
Our Dad loved our mom and was grateful to have enjoyed this life’s adventure with her. While providing us with advice as we navigate marriage, parenthood, and professional roles, Dad often reminded us how proud he was of his girls. He baptized all of his grandchildren, and although his time with them was short, now, with perfect eyes, he can see them grow up from a seat in heaven. Dad was generous with his laughter, support, and compassion. If he knew there was a need, Dad, would offer his time, prayers, and financial support regardless of whether he knew the person. Music was a fixture in Dad’s life, and when he wasn’t listening to melodies to rejuvenate his soul, he used his self-learned guitar skills to help people build relationships through music with God and each other. Next to music, reading was where our Dad sought refuge, dared to dream, and ponder. Even when his sight went dim, he turned his ears to listen to books and always had a recommendation for our next best read. He spent time perfecting his sauerkraut-making process and loved teaching anyone willing to put up with the time-consuming task and smell. Our Dad was a loyal Wisconsin sports fan, and we joked that his sermons seemed shorter when the Green Bay Packers had a noon game. When there was a chance for some free time, he enjoyed fishing, tinkering with electronics, and dreaming up projects to complete with the people he loved.
Our Dad is survived by his wife of 43 years, April (Rasmussen) Miller; his three daughters: Alysha (Reid) Hamann of Brookings, SD, Bethany (Josh) Baumgartner of Fennimore, WI, and Chelsea (Ryan) McManman of White House, TN; five grandchildren: Noah, Meredith, Caleb, Lylla and Brogan; three sisters: Andrea (John) McCarrier, Jackie (Ken) Hastreiter, and Marcy (Tom) Rau; nine in-laws: Diane (Gunther) Nothnagel, Dixie Fields, Larry Rasmusen, John (April) Rasmussen, Cindy (Scott) Yaun, Ed Rasmussen, Mary (Scott) Fleck, Boyd (Julz) Rasmussen, and Alan Rasmussen; two puppies: Blu and Bray and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Esther; in-laws, Jane and James Johnson; Nels and Rita Rasmussen; and his brother-in-law, Don Fields.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 22, 2024 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Burial will be in the Walnut Mound Cemetery, Retreat, WI. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 21, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua, and on Monday, January 22, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, please consider doing a random act of kindness in our Dad’s memory or giving to the emergency help fund at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in La Crosse, WI. Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services is entrusted with his services.
A special thank you to Pastor Joanne for your many visits when Dad was home in hospice care and for providing our parents with a welcoming church to call home. We are also grateful for the care and compassion Dad received from St. Croix Hospice staff.

Rev. Dr. Steven A. Fossum - August 24, 1941 - November 29, 2023

Departed: 11/29/2023 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Rev. Dr. Steven A. Fossum, age 82, of Viroqua, WI, was united with his Lord and Savior into eternal life on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. As a man who exemplified the immortal values of faith, hope, and love, Pastor Steve devoted his life to the power of love. He was a lover of all he knew – his family, friends and colleagues, and above all God. Steve’s love endured throughout his life and even as he experienced the ravages of Alzheimer’s, Pastor Steve demonstrated how God’s love can touch us from heaven in both this life and eternity. Steve was born on August 24, 1941 in La Crosse, WI, the son of John Bernard and Gladys Leone (Henschel) Fossum. He attended La Crosse Logan High School, where he excelled playing the saxophone in the Top Hats Dixieland Band – appearing on the Ted Max Amateur Show, graduating in 1959. Steve furthered his education at La Crosse State College (now UW-La Crosse) attaining an economics degree in 1964. That same year, he married Jenny (Latterell) McBain, and two children were born to this union. Steve went on to follow his heart in service to the Lord by attending Mount Airy Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, and was ordained May 25, 1969. Pastor Steve’s life of ministry led him to the dual parish of Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace, MI, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort, MI, for four years. He was then called to serve at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Jefferson, WI, for sixteen years, and received his Doctorate of Theology Degree from Chicago Seminary. The Lord then brought Pastor Steve to Viroqua, as minister at Immanuel Lutheran Church for fifteen years. During his retirement he served a number of area churches as a supply pastor and was chaplain at Bethel Home and Services for nine years. Pastor Steve believed strongly in the power of presence and enjoyed visiting with people in their homes as a vital part of his ministry. Beyond participating in baptisms, confirmations, and the like, Steve also loved being actively engaged with community events as well. Whether it was participating in one of the many community or state-wide events he was a part of, or just attending a ball game at the Park Bowl, Pastor Steve took part with great joy. He was a founding member of the Viroqua Partners with his friend, Fred Nelson, and they had great fun during their weekly meeting of the minds calling each other “Dim and Dimmer”. Jokes aside, their leadership brought many community projects to fruition, greatly benefiting all those in Viroqua and the surrounding areas. Sports and music were two of Steve’s passions that often intertwined with his community involvement. He could play soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone, along with some clarinet and flute, and frequently performed around town. Watching the Brewers, Badgers, and the Packers, led to good times, and playing tennis, basketball, softball, golf, and running cross country delighted him. Pastor Steve also took satisfaction being a gentleman farmer: maintaining his John Deere farm equipment, clearing new or repairing existing fencing, raising his own chicken and turkey, or just appreciating all God’s creations. Being in nature allowed him to meditate on God’s glorious world and to appreciate life’s blessings: among these, the love story between he and his soulmate, Tami (DeMars) Mastin, whom he married in 2001. He will long be remembered for his unwavering devotion to the Lord and his selfless dedication to His service – Blessed be his memory.
Pastor Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Tami; his children: Christine (Bill) Kleckner and Scott (Dani) Fossum; four step-children: Brianna, Collin, Greg, and Kim; three grandchildren: Sophie, Story, and Ruby; brother, Dave (Joy) Fossum; and countless friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Burial will follow in the Viroqua Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Viroqua; and on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials in Pastor Steve's name may be given to The Alzheimer's Association; The American Cancer Society; The Bethel Home and Services Foundation; Peace Lutheran Church, Readstown; Immanuel Lutheran Church, Viroqua; or another charity of choice.  Thorson-Popp Funeral and Cremation Services in Viroqua is entrusted with his services.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the person's passing, share details about their life and accomplishments, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

Who writes an obituary?
