Mickey Gene Lathrop - March 01, 1956 - May 13, 2021

Departed: 05/13/2021 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Mickey G. Lathrop Age 65 of Soldiers Grove passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 13, 2021 at home.  He was born on March 1, 1956 to Costello “Buck” and Clarice (Brigson) Lathrop.  He graduated from North Crawford Schools in 1974.  Mick married Lillian Bergum in 1975 and became a father to his pride and joy Erica Marie.  He started his work life driving semi-tractor for P.I.C. in Spring Green.  In 1987 he decided on a career change and attended Southwest Tech in Fennimore for 2 years.  For the rest of his life he worked for Alkar as a service technician and service manager.  Mick travelled the world in his 30 years of work at Alkar.  He saw many different ways of life and he made friends, but to Mick, there was no place like home.  His favorite job of all was being a father and grandpa.  There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do for Erica and ‘the boys.’  He took great pride in everything that Erica and the grandsons did.  He was in awe of the woman she is and the men they are growing into.  Everyone knew there was no one that who could walk the woods like Mick did and be as relentless in his search of mushrooms, walleyes, and whitetails.  He lovingly shared “most” of his knowledge of how to find them, catch them and bag them.  Mick was at his best when he was on the water or in the woods, all the family vacations involved a boat and fishing pole. Mick had a strong sense of importance of family.  He was happiest when his house was full of people he loved and there was a card game going on and a meal to share.  Mick loved to cook and had a fine taste for food that he had enjoyed on his travels and that his mom had made.  His recipes were all in his head, so variety was the spice of his life.  He was excellent at crosswords, scrabble and math and loved to read.  He didn’t want to lose any game, especially scrabble to Lillian.
Mick is survived by his wife of 45 years Lillian, daughter Erica (Gunnar) Gretebeck; grandsons Ruger, Caden and Steele Johnson; bonus grandchildren Makayla, Lars and Annaliese Gretebeck; sisters Linda (David) McKittrick and Judy (Hank) Bossenbroek; brothers Tony (Patty), Max (Diane) and John (MaryAnn)Brigson; Sister-in-laws Peggy Lathrop, Thea Johnson (Pam Witte); Brother-in-laws Harlan Bergum, and David Bergum.  17 nieces and nephews and 27 great nieces and nephews. Also, lifelong friends Bill Iverson and Dennis Brown.  He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother and best friend, Mark, his in-laws Harlan and Lee Bergum, his brother-in-law Ronnie Swiggum.
Visitation will be on Sunday May 16th from 1:30 p.m. until 3 p.m at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Soldiers Grove, with a private family and close friends service to follow with Pastor Carrie Anderson Officiating.  Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Soliders Grove.

Glenn Wyman Gardner - February 22, 1934 - April 18, 2021

Departed: 04/18/2021 (Viroqua)
Obituary Preview: Glenn W. Gardner Age 87, of Viroqua passed away on Sunday April 18th, 2021 at the Norseland Nursing Home in Westby surrounded by his loving family.  He was born February 22, 1934 at his family's home in Vernon County. He shared a birthday with George Washington and Glenn’s uncle was deeply disappointed that they didn’t name him George. In rebuttal, he called him George his entire life and Lois Martha.  Glenn attended a one room school as was the custom then. He was a quick learner and excelled in math, graduating from high school at age 16 in 1950. Following high school graduation, he joined the Viroqua unit of the Wisconsin National Guard of which he was a member for 10 years.  He made the best deal in his life when he married Lois Everson October 9, 1954 at Utica Lutheran Church. They moved into their current home in 1969 where they raised their four daughters, Sharon (Mark) Larson, Carmen Mlsna (long-time friend Carter Schnell), Ellen (Art) Thelen and Renae (Kent) Mikkelson. They were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church their entire married life.  They farmed south of Viroqua until 1967 when Glenn purchased the Surge Milking Equipment business which he operated for 5 years.  After selling the Surge store he became a real estate agent.  Even though he had no formal auctioneer training, Hall Realty partnered up with him in the auction business for several years. After retirement he and Lois were still active participants at auctions where they would buy items to resell at their own garage sales, usually involving their daughters as well. He enjoyed this pastime right up until recent medical issues.  Glenn was an avid year- round fisherman and enjoyed many kinds of hunting. He was a long- time member of the Eagles and Lions Clubs in Viroqua. In 2014 he received recognition for his many years of collecting deer hides for fundraising for the Eagle Cancer Telethon. In 2016 he received the Mr. Eagle award and also received the Distinguished Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lions Clubs International which recognizes dedicated humanitarian services.  Glenn was instrumental in fund raising efforts for the Viroqua Community Arena. Glenn always looked forward to the Vernon County Fair where he liked to watch the harness racing and work in the Lion’s food stand. His family joked about the great armchair coaching he did while watching Brewer baseball, Packer football and Wisconsin Badger football and basketball from his favorite chair.  Glenn loved to tell stories and he could entertain anyone with his tales of hunting, fishing, and auction escapades. He had a wonderful voice and sang for weddings, funerals, the church choir.  He also belonged to the Viroqua Barbershop Choir and sang in a Barbershop quartet.  His family was the heart of Glenn’s life. He loved family gatherings and enjoyed hearing the latest about his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. He was truly thankful for the rich and full life he enjoyed.  He had many medical issues in many years and when he beat Covid-19 last year he proclaimed, “I’m tougher than a boiled owl.” Perhaps that sums up his life best.
He is survived by his wife, four daughters, sisters Verna Reed and Ardith Hoff both of Viroqua, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.  Glenn was preceded in death by his parents Melvin and Clara Gardner, three sisters, Geneva Hendrickson, Burnelle Olson, and Ada Gardner and six premature grandsons.

Darell was a creative person who always had a new idea and loved inventing new things, especially fishing lures, which he would at one time, market through Bass Pro Shops. In 1984, his love of fishing would inspire Darell and Jeneane to relocate the family to Eagle River, Wi; where they opened the fishing themed family restaurant, "Phalin's Lure Inn". The Phalin's ran the restaurant until 1989.  Afterwards, Darell kept busy woodworking in his shop, and later, opened an antique shop with Jeneane, called "The Clearwater Curio". After leaving the Eagle River area, Darell and Jeneane spent most of their remaining time in Crivitz, Wi. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and sharing his hunting and fishing knowledge with them. He loved animals and loved spoiling his dogs and teaching them tricks. He loved sharing his humorous and wild stories of his many youthful adventures. His sense of humor and colorful personality will be missed.
He is survived by his sons, Damon (Teri) Phalin of Tomahawk, Dustin Phalin of Appleton, and Danyon (Nicole) Phalin of Appleton; grandchildren: Austin, Gavin, Easton, Mason, Kegan, Keylee, Evan and Quinton.  He is further survived by a brother, Gene of Arkdale, WI.  He was preceded in death by his wife Jeneane Phalin and his parents, Gerald and Genevieve Phalin.
