Departed: 05/08/2024 (Conneaut)
Obituary Preview: The family of Luke Patrick Gallagher regretfully announces his passing. Born in Akron on December 15th, 1964, Luke died on Wednesday, May 8th, 2024. He was 59 years old and passed due to a medical event while driving, causing him to crash.
Raised in Talmadge, Ohio, as the youngest of five children born to Dominic and Berneda Gallagher, Luke obtained his undergraduate degree from Heidelberg University and received his law degree from the University of Toledo. He had a long and successful career in law, including serving as the assistant law director to the city of Conneaut as well as running his own practice.
Luke was a selfless friend and a dedicated host. He was well known for hosting 'lodge night' in the converted building that he ran his practice out of. His friends all have treasured memories of delicious food, creative drinks and excellent company. His generosity was extended to the rest of his community through his service to various charitable organizations and his willingness to lend a hand to others whenever he was able to.
His sharp mind was fed through his tabletop gaming hobby, of which he was a gracious host and game coordinator to the gaming community. He often ran games at conventions and at game stores nearby, or would host those interested in learning how to play at the lodge. His desire to seek out new and exciting experiences could be seen through his love for travel and backpacking, either on his own or accompanied by his children, friends and siblings, but almost always with his beloved dog, Mordecai.

Suzette Marie Picard - July 27, 1959 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (Conneaut)
Obituary Preview: Conneaut- Suzette Marie Picard, 64, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at the Ames Family Hospice House after a courageous fight with ALS.
She was born on July 27, 1959, in Conneaut, Ohio. The youngest daughter of James Albert and Barbara (Rossman) Picard, Suzy graduated from Conneaut High School and earned a degree in nursing from Kent State, Ashtabula. Her desire to care for others led her on a 20+ year career spanning various positions across home health, nursing homes, hospitals, and finally with the Lake Erie Correctional Facility. Suzy proudly practiced nursing with compassion and precision, and as a patient, expected no less.
She was an introverted reader, sensitive artist, shameless performer; nurse, wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt; a bohemian heart in the throes of domestication, hers was a soul from a place she never knew. So she hung her sketches on the walls of her family's Irwin Place cottage, composed a song on her piano after household chores on clean summer days, and lulled her children to sleep with stories from her "special book collection." There were always buttons, ribbon, and a hot glue gun on standby, just waiting for a Christmas to provoke her talents. There was never contentment.
With a bright light and a bitter bite, she told awful truths just as deftly as she would run from them. As a young woman, Suzy put herself on display. As an older woman, she stored herself on a shelf. She could accept being Loved only as she was, though she often wanted to be seen only as she wasn't.
As her faculties declined, that Love came to her. Her creativity continued to seep out in the ways that it could, fashioning her bows and her boxes. And though her fingers had grown brittle, with tinsel spinning in the wheels of her electric wheelchair and chocolate ice cream on her shirt, Suzy played her song one more time.
She leaves behind her two children, Marc (Jade Todaro) Patchen and Barbara (Nathan Finch) Patchen; siblings, Jerry (Lynn) Picard, Patty (Richard) Meeker, and Robert (Cindy Swank) Picard; her beloved niece, Gena (TJ) Colby; and Gena's children, Hailey, Jacob, Alex, and Maddix, whom Suzette Loved as her own; as well as many other dear nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her sisters, Sara Picard and Janiece (David) Bennett.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Thompson-Smith-Nesbitt Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut. Friends and family will gather from 1:00PM until the time of her service at 2:00PM. Online guestbook and condolences may be left at www.thompsonsmithnesbitt.com

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and acquaintances of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They can also help to notify people who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close friends of the deceased write the obituary. However, some funeral homes or obituary writers may offer assistance in crafting the obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include hobbies, achievements, and other personal details that highlight the person's life.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos or create a photo slideshow to accompany the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. However, some online platforms may allow for longer or shorter obituaries.

Can I include quotes or poems in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary and help to capture their spirit.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides a more detailed account of the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

You can usually submit an obituary to a newspaper through their website, by email, or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be sure to check their guidelines and deadlines beforehand.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication, word count, and any additional features such as photos or videos. Online platforms may offer free or low-cost options, while print newspapers may charge by the line or word.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or platform. Some may allow edits or corrections within a certain timeframe, while others may not. It's essential to proofread carefully before submitting the obituary.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the platform. Some online obituaries may remain available indefinitely, while others may be archived after a certain period. Be sure to check the platform's policies before submitting.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! You can specify if donations should be made in lieu of flowers or gifts. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a cause they cared about.

What is the purpose of an obituary guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and pay tribute to the deceased. It can provide comfort and support to those grieving.

Can I include funeral service details in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including funeral service details such as date, time, location, and officiant can help ensure that everyone who wants to attend is able to do so.

What is the etiquette for responding to an online condolence message?

A simple "thank you" or acknowledgement is sufficient when responding to online condolences. You can also respond privately if you prefer.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Absolutely! Sharing an obituary on social media can help spread the word quickly and reach a wider audience. Just be sure to respect any privacy settings or restrictions set by the family.
