Robert "Bob" Stone - April 16, 1952 - January 21, 2024

Departed: 01/21/2024 (Bloomer)
Obituary Preview: On Sunday, January 21, 2024, Robert (Bob) “Rocky” Stone, 71, of Colfax, WI, passed away peacefully at his home with his wife Connie at his side. Bob lost his battle to cancer after fighting with dignity, courage, and his trademark humor.
He was born in Benson, Minnesota on April 16, 1952, to Andrew L. and Phyllis Mae (Smith) Stone. He spent his childhood and teen years there with his parents and older brother Dan. Bob briefly attended college at Moorhead State until a bicycle accident sent him back home to Benson in a body cast to heal.
He met his wife-to-be, Connie Wall, through her brother and roommate Michael. The guys met through their shared interest in Harley motorcycles. After 3 years of dating and many motorcycle rides around Minnesota and Wisconsin, they were married on August 26, 1978, at the Wall family farm near Nelson, Wisconsin. The following year, they settled in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota where their two sons, Justin, and Nathan were raised.
Bob started a career in the trucking industry as a night shift shop hand following his bicycle accident. Over the years, he worked his way up in the company through hard work and dedication. He never compromised on his values. He ended his trucking career as a vice president working under his mentor, Jim Aronson, at Transport America in Eagan, Minnesota.
Bob enjoyed participating in his sons’ sports. He may not have been the best ball player, or know how to skate very well, but he was great at inspiring and leading kids. He enjoyed “running the door” on the bench at Nate’s hockey games, and, after watching Justin play on a few baseball teams with crummy coaches, said “I can do better than that!” The following year, with Bob as the coach, Justin’s baseball team, finishing in last place in the regular season, won the championship tournament with a cast of misfits reminiscent of the Sandlot movie. Bob never gave up on them and cared about every kid on the team. Bob was a proud and loving son, father, and grandfather. He was an avid outdoorsman, handyman, mechanic, neighbor, and the best (fish) storyteller that ever existed. He was the cribbage master. He loved playing with family and friends (or Grandpa Don) on one of the dozens of boards he owned or solo on the sunporch computer. He was rarely skunked! Many of his Benson friends will tell you he was a great Buck Euchre player. If there were cards involved, Bob found a way to win!
When their sons had grown to young adults, Bob and Connie moved to Colfax, Wisconsin where he took on the role of General Contractor to build their beautiful home on the Red Cedar River. Bob easily made friends in their new community.
After building their home, Bob worked in Menomonie as a rental property manager for several agencies where he was able to put his handyman & problem-solving skills on display.
Bob officially retired at the age of 67 and started taking on more projects around home. He finished the basement to include his man cave, but more importantly, added guest bedrooms and a bathroom to accommodate visiting family and friends. He refurbished his Ford 8N tractor, fiddled with his MG convertible, organized his shop, and put in countless hours mowing his "lawns". He took pride in keeping all the grass and trees in tip-top shape. Bob loved the Red Cedar River and all the wildlife that lived there.
He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Connie; sons, Justin (Andrea) and Nate (Cassie); his six grandchildren: Kennady, Harper, Easton, Case, Cullen, and McCoy; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew LeRoy and Phyllis Mae (Smith) Stone; and brother, Daniel LeRoy Stone.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care and compassion that they have received. Bob was a humble man who will be remembered for all the love and stories he shared with his friends and families.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the place where Bob and Connie were married. The Nelson Stone Barn - located at S685 County Road KK in Nelson, WI, 54756. Online at the www.thenelsonstonebarn.com or (715) 673-4478.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online, or in a funeral home's website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help families process their grief and provide closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing it. The writer should be someone who knew the deceased well and can provide accurate and meaningful information.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. You may also include a brief biography or anecdote to personalize the obituary.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Longer obituaries may be suitable for online publications or memorial websites.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and requirements. Some newspapers may have online forms or email addresses for submitting obituaries.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, you can write your own obituary in advance. This is often referred to as a "self-written" or "pre-written" obituary. It can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told accurately.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's difficult or impossible to make changes to an obituary once it's been published. Be sure to proofread carefully before submitting it.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to share the obituary publicly, you can choose to keep it private by sharing it only with close family and friends or through a private online memorial page.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other gestures. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased's legacy.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The timeframe varies depending on the publication's schedule and deadlines. Online platforms may publish immediately, while newspapers may take several days or weeks.
